Chapter Sixteen- The Picnic's Hidden Sight
"Wow. Luna sure wasn't kidding when she said that the restaurant always has a lot of customers." Lina was holding some plates with her hands.
Her hair was tied up in a single braid so that her long hair wouldn't get in the way while she is working as a waitress. "This place sure is packed." she walked to serve the dinner plates at a customer's table. "Here is your food. Thank you for waiting." she told the couple that was sitting at the table.
"Lina." said Luna.
"Yes?" Lina turned to hear her sister calling her name.
"My boss told me that you are doing a good job. And that right now, is time for your break."
"Oh really? Thanks for letting me know about that." said Lina. "Thank gosh, I feel so exhausted from walking around so much. Even though, I'm in flats." she sighed. "I'll go on my break now."
"I will be taking over now. So go ahead and sit down." Luna told Lina.
"Sure. I will." Lina went to a back room to go sit down in a chair. "I wonder, how Gourry is doing with the job hunting? I hope he's doing fine without me."
"Wow. You really know your stuff, lad." a guy said to Gourry, watching him fix something wooden.
"Sure, I do. I learned this stuff from my dad, back at home." said Gourry. "It's no big deal."
Hours had passed. Gourry and Lina had both finished with their shifts at work. They had both arrived back at the Inverse household. Luna Inverse, aka Lina's big sister.. was the only one that was still working, she was doing a late night shift at the restaurant that Lina was new to working at.
Lina entered her old home. "Mom. Dad. I'm back from waitressing at the restaurant. But Luna is doing a late night shift there, today."
"Oh okay, sweetie." said Lina's mom. "Thanks for telling us that."
Gourry was sitting in a chair in the living room. "Lina!" his happy eyes showed that he was happy to see Lina was back. He got up from his chair and put his arms around her, embracing her in a hug. "You're back! I missed you, while you were at work. Also, I like the way you look in your work uniform."
"Gourry." Lina was embarrassed that Gourry was hugging her while her parents were watching them.
"I got a job to fix things at some sort of mechanic shop." Gourry said, while he stopped hugging Lina.
"Oh. That's great. And I had no idea that you can fix things?" said Lina, being impressed with Gourry's skill.
"I learned it from my dad. He taught me a lot of things back at my old home." Gourry said.
"That's uh..." said Lina. "Good to know. Meanwhile, I'm a waitress. I work with Luna at a restaurant."
Lina finished changing back into her normal clothes as she took off her waitress uniform from earlier. She went with Gourry on a walk outside. "Hey, Mom. Dad. I'll be back. I'm going with Gourry on a walk outside."
"Okay. Stay safe out there, kids." said Mr. Inverse, to Gourry and Lina.
------------------------------------------------------
"Gourry. We need to start looking around for houses." Lina was wearing a short dress while her hair was still in a single braid. "Why don't we walk around?"
"Yeah, sure." said Gourry, walking by her side. "Man, I sure am hungry. I really wouldn't mind getting a single bite of food. Even if it was just a piece."
"Here." Lina was holding a small brown-wooden basket that was covered with a white tablecloth. "Gourry." she took out a small red apple out of it, giving it to him. "You can eat this apple in the meanwhile, while I start setting up our picnic." she pointed to the woods with a grass field that was near a large lake of water.
She walked down the dirt pathway that lead near there.
"Thanks." Gourry bit into the red apple. "Wait. Picnic? You mean, you brought us food!?" he followed right after her instantly.
Lina set the brown basket down on the grass. She took out a folded cloth and placed it on top of the grass. "Oh geez, I love picnics!" Gourry said, watching in amazement as Lina took out food from the basket.
"Woah! This sure looks really neat." Gourry sat down on top of the picnic blanket. "Can we eat now?"
"Yes. We can. I'm done setting this up, Gourry." Lina placed the last plate of food down at the center. "There. Now we can both dig in."
Gourry began eating two chicken drumsticks in both of his hands. He physically bit off the chicken rapidly. "Mmm. Yum!"
"Gourry! Don't forget to save some for me! After all, I brought the food here. And there wouldn't be a picnic without it." Lina took a small bite out of the small bread roll that she was holding.
"Sorry. It's just that I really like meat." Gourry said with his mouth full. "I'll save some for you."
Devouring off the last bites to the remainder of their steaks (which was the last food from the picnic standing), Gourry and Lina both finished it off by wiping off their lips with a handkerchief. "Ah. That was a nice meal." said Gourry. "And I would be willing to have another picnic with you, some other time."
"Yeah." said Lina, getting up. "What can I say?" she put the plates and kitchen utensils back in the basket. "A walk out in nature, sure isn't complete without having a single thing to eat. You know?" she closed the basket.
"Yeah, it just doesn't feel the same." said Gourry, he got up and took off the picnic blanket. "To not enjoy nature, while you're eating some grub. It hits different in a way." he folded the cloth and gave it back to her, so that she can put it away in the wooden basket.
"Hey. Look." said Lina, glancing back at a bunch of plants that were covering some sort of large structure. "What do you think is over there? Behind those trees?"
"I don't know, Lina." said Gourry. "But as your guardian and husband," he stood in front of her in a defensive position. "I won't let you go out there alone. I want to be by your side. So, I'll go there with you." he took his sword out quickly.
"Okay. Mr. Hotshot. I'm already perfectly capable of defending myself." said Lina, not being amazed. "Fine. Let's find out what's over there." she followed Gourry to the spooky-looking building that was covered in plants.
