Chapter 7

We trudged through several miles of forest once night had fallen to get to the meeting place. It was a grueling trek, as my body was still recovering from the beating I endured the other night. Every movement had pain shooting through me.

King Leon only brought 10 guards, myself, and Amber. I would be surprised at the small amount of people if I hadn't heard stories that the King was equivalent to 100 men in battle. So, I had a suspicion that the guards were more for show than anything. Leon never wanted anyone to know what he truly was and wasn't capable of.

I tried to get close to the crate they were carrying Amber in, but King Leon was insistent that I walk in the front with him. He even went so far as to grab my hand once I started trying to fall back. The King's large hand encompassing mine made me feel ill. He was absolutely revolting, and yet I would do exactly what he wanted.

We stopped when we got to the base of a rocky hill. The King finally let go of my hand and when he turned away I wiped it on my thin dress. King Leon walked towards the rocks and seemed to be contemplating something. I didn't feel well equipped to climb up all these boulders if that's what we were about to do. To my shock when King Leon placed his hand on one of the larger rocks his hand went through it. He turned and smirked at us before stepping into the rock. The guards and I stood dumbfounded for a moment before they gathered their bearings and started shuffling towards the magic entrance.

One of them grabbed me by the arm and dragged me through with them. We stepped into a well lit passageway, and I felt a little disoriented from the magic. I was pulled along, and tried to keep my jaw from dropping as torches lit when we passed them and then went out when no one was near.

The tunnel was narrow, and damp. Stone surrounded us, and my heart pounded as my mind conjured thoughts of the walls caving in. Soon there was deep voices, and a warm light ahead of us.

I tried to keep walking into the new room, but was stopped by a guard. He grabbed my face harshly and spit at me, "Stay here." I yanked my head away from him, and watched the ground as boots shuffled past me.

Amber was set next to me and I scrambled over to her. My hands quickly found the metal bars, and I peered in. A gasp escaped my lips before I had a chance to stop it. Amber was in the fetal position at the bottom of the small cage. The stench that was coming from her, and the way her legs looked bloody, and twisted caused a small cry to rise up from within me.

"Amber, what have they done to you? I'm so so sorry," I sobbed into the metal.

"Mom?" She asked hoarsely.

"No, it's Maya. Remember?" I begged.

"Momma, I knew you would come for me. N-nobody believed me..." she trailed off and fell silent. I covered my mouth with my hand but it didn't stop the bile from rising up. I shifted to the side and dry heaved because there was nothing in my stomach.

I wiped the spit away from my mouth and turned back to Amber. I could barely touch her through the bars, so I stroked her hair to try and bring her some comfort.

Muffled voices found their way to me, and I strained to make out what they were saying. "...that you've brought us here?" A timid male voice asked. That was probably the human King, Edwin. I could only imagine how he felt compared to the other two king's.

King Leon's deep voice rang out, "I was getting to that, if you would have let me finish. Peasant."

"I somehow forgot how insufferable you are, Leon," retorted another male. His voice was low and authoritative, but smooth like honey. That had to be the werewolf King. I couldn't imagine anyone else speaking to King Leon like that and getting away with it.

King Leon stated dryly, "And yet I didn't forget how vexing you are Damion. Now, if I could continue without any interruptions, that would be ideal." They were either whispering, or his words were met with silence. Either way I couldn't make out anything being said.

"As High King, you know that it takes great humility for me to come before the two of you today-" Leon started.

King Damion interrupted, "You are no fucking high king. Not off to a good start, Leon."

"I've decided that I should have an upgrade in title as I have the largest Kingdom. Need I remind you that I won this last war we had?" King Leon asked.

"Get to the damn point before I can't stand to hear you speak for another second," King Damion stated gruffly. I couldn't believe that he was speaking to King Leon like this without the King doing anything to punish him.

There was a loud sigh, and then King Leon continued, "As I was saying, I wouldn't be standing here before you today without good reason. The moon goddess long ago cursed me with visions when I gained the throne. Some are what is going to happen, and some are branches of possibilities. As of late, I have been having dreams of a sickness sweeping over our lands leaving death in it's path. There are no survivors of this plague. The second half of the vision there is a woman with glowing white hair. She tries to speak to me, but I am always pulled out of the vision before I can hear what she says. I think she is the key to our salvation."

The silence from the other room was palpable. The words sunk in, and I realized that he was likely talking about me at the end.

"Who's to say anything you are saying is accurate?" King Damion pressed.

King Leon replied, "There's a reason I was always one step ahead of you on the battlefield, Damion. I have guarded this secret of mine for hundreds of years. I am not telling you all of this as an elaborate joke."

"If what you are saying is true, we need to find the woman you have been seeing," interjected King Edwin.

King Damion scoffed, "That's a big if."

"Once again, I'm one step ahead of you. Guards, bring out them out."
