----------------------------------------------------------
Back in secondary, Natasha always kept her head down and studied to the best of her ability. She always tried her hardest to stay on top of her work, keep her head down and stay out of trouble. She and her few friends had that in common. Obviously, they weren't huge nerds and had lives outside of school but grades really mattered to them and they hated getting involved in drama. (who does lol)
Apart from one massive mishap where she lost a friend who lowkey started bullying her, the duration of her school life was pretty unproblematic. Or least until a bet was placed.
"So you say you can get any girl you want?" a boy taller than Minho sat across from him with a challenging look in his eye. Ah, the bad boy and the pretty looking boy. Forever enemies for some stupid reason.
"Yes, Hwang. I bet she'd choose me over you, any day." Minho rolled his eyes, bored.
"You bet?"
"Yep. Choose a girl, any girl you want. If I can make her choose me over you, you have to transfer out." Minho challenged Hyunjin, suddenly interested in the conversation.
"And if she picks me, you have to transfer out?"
"Sure."
Hyunjin thought for a second, thinking carefully about who he would choose. It would be hard to turn any of Minho's fangirls against him, so it would be easier to choose one of the girls he knew was obsessed with him.
"Let's do it on Dara."
"No freaking way. How is that fair? She literally stares at you all day. Choose someone who doesn't like either of us in that way."
Hyunjin thought back to the girls in his classes... and his mind landed on the girl he sits next to in science. She was pretty and smart, and he always heard her talking with her friends about how much she hated Lee Minho. Not only that, but they were on good terms. Close to becoming friends.
"Alright then, what about Natasha?"
"Natasha? That's the girl with dutch braids, right?"
"Yeah."
"Okay. Game on."
Minho reluctantly shook Hyunjin's hand and sauntered off. He'd be lying if he said he hadn't noticed her before. There was one incident where he accidentally bumped into her - truly an accident - resulting in all of his food being spilt on her uniform. She was carrying some books at the time so he knelt down to pick them up for her. It was the least he could do, after all. When he looked up to hand her two of her books, he was a bit taken aback by her beauty. He snapped out of his trance when he heard her muttering "Arrogant bastard, watch where you're going next time," immediately evoking a frown on his face. "Hey, you ruined my lunch. You're not the only one annoyed." He just received an icy glare from her as she walked off. If it weren't for her harsh words, he would've asked her out on the spot. "This should be interesting." he thought to himself as he walked to where her friends were currently sat.
"Hi ladies, could I borrow Natasha for a few minutes?"
Silence.
What? Really? Where all the sounds of whoops and cheers he was used to hearing?
Swallowing under the pressure of 5 girls giving him death stares, he re-worded his question.
"Okay, you can all come then." He said before turning to Natasha. "I need tutoring if I'm going to pass maths. You're top of the class. It'd hurt my image to do it out here where everyone can see, but if you feel uncomfortable, all your friends can come."
"Tutoring. Uh-huh." A girl on the table sarcastically nodded, not believing him for a second.
"If it'd hurt your image, why would you ask someone you know doesn't like you? How do you know I won't go around telling everyone?" Natasha asked sceptically. Minho had no reason to approach her. Their circles didn't mix, and she definitely wasn't his type. And tutoring? That would make sense, but he could literally just hire a tutor. Or ask a guy. Why her?
"Cause I trust you," Minho replied, tilting his head slightly and smiling.
"A bad decision, really." She responded nonchalantly. "You don't even know me."
"Yeah, I do. Remember that one time we bumped into each other?"
Wrong move.
"Oh, so you remember that?" Natasha's face lights up. "So you must remember what I called you too, right?"
"An... arrogant... bastard," Minho said, quietly.
"Not quite, sweetie. Arrogant son of a bitch. Now, why would you trust someone who calls you that?"
"Look, I trust you cause you seem like a nice person. You don't get involved in drama and you refuse to gossip about anyone -"
"With the exception of you."
"What?"
"Sorry, Minho, but I'm not falling for it. Find someone else to 'tutor' you."
"But why-"
"Why are you even asking me? Everyone knows I hate you with a passion."
"Why? What did I do?"
Natasha looked at one of the girls sitting on the table before rolling her eyes. She did look kind of familiar to Minho.
"I'll pay you."
That caught her attention. She did need to find a part-time job to pay for a concert she wanted to attend at the end of the year.
"Wow, in it for the money, huh?"
"Have I told you how much I hate you?"
"Yes. Like seconds ago. I still need a tutor."
"How much are you paying?"
"20 - no - £35 an hour and I'll increase it to £50 every week you keep it a secret."
HOLY SHIT - £50?! Natasha's eyes widened.
"Okay, I'll take the hint. I know when I'm not wanted." Minho stood up to leave but was stopped by a hand grabbing his wrist. Huh, sparks. That was new.
"£50? I'll do it." Still facing away from Natasha, a victorious smirk made its way to his face.
"Your first tutoring session is today, straight after school." His smirk dropped as he turned around with a scowl.
"I have plans. Let's do tomorrow."
"I have plans then. Show up today or fail maths, I don't care." Natasha walked away before he could retort.
Gosh, this would be hard. Minho wouldn't ever admit it, but something about her intrigued him. Suddenly, he found himself anticipating the end of school, curious to see what would happen.
Natasha, on the other hand, was absolutely dreading it. Out of every guy in the school, she just had to tutor the one she despised the most. £50 though. I'd be a fool to pass that up. With a sigh, she sat down next to Hyunjin as her science class began,
"Are you okay?" He asked with a concerned look on his face.
"I'm perfectly fine." She fixed a smile on her face as she turned to look at him. Wow. He's really handsome.
Aware of her staring, Hyunjin stared back with a small smile on her face, waiting for her to notice. Minho doesn't stand a chance. When she still didn't notice that she was staring after a while, he decided to speak up.
"Are you sure? You seem a little spacey. Come on, you can tell me what's wrong."
Snapping out of her trance, she blinked a bit before responding.
"Uh, sorry about that. I wasn't staring, I just zoned out." She responded, quite embarrassed.
Hyunjin smiled at her and shook his head at her. Cute.
"Well, you're welcome to zone out and stare at my face any time you like. I don't mind. But seriously, what's wrong?"
What the hell?! What did he just say? Relax, he probably didn't even mean it in the way I think.
"I agreed to tutor Minho."
"What? Why would you do that? You hate him."
"Because I'm an idiot who needs the money."
"Don't tutor him."
"I can't just not show up. I already agreed."
"Natasha, please. I'll tutor him for you. You know what he's like."
"Thanks, but I can handle myself. Oh! He said he'd pay me extra if I kept it a secret. Please don't tell him. I'll be screwed otherwise."
"Anything for you." Hyunjin reluctantly agreed. Minho already found a way to dig his claws in. He had to make his move somehow before the lesson was over. Lucky for him, Natasha was feeling quite sleepy. She dozed off and wasn't paying attention.
Hyunjin noticed and started listening and taking notes diligently. Their teacher always gave them an extra 15 minutes at the end of the lesson to solidify the information they had just taken in. During those 15 minutes, he gently grabbed her book and started making notes for her. At the end of the lesson, she was still asleep so he quickly left and bought her iced tea.
He quietly walked back into the classroom and crouched down beside her. He gently tapped her shoulder to wake her up. When that didn't work, he tucked some stray strands of hair behind her ear and gently stroked her head.
"Natasha? Class is over."
"Ngh - 5 more minutes." she sleepily murmured.
Chuckling quietly, he leaned in closer and whispered "No can do, princess. You have to go tutor an idiot, remember?"
Feeling chills down her spine, she immediately woke up and sat up straight.
"Hi. How was your trip to dreamland?" He asked with a smile.
"Oh my gosh, did I sleep the entire lesson?"
"Afraid so, beautiful. But it's okay. I copied out my notes for you. You're smart so you'll catch up in no time."
At the mention of the word 'beautiful', a smile made its way to Natasha's face.
"Here's some tea to wake you up and give you strength to tutor Minho. Lord knows he'll be a handful."
It was such a simple gesture and yet it made her heart flutter. That, combined with 'princess' and 'beautiful' was enough to make her blush.
"Thank you. Really. You didn't have to do all this."
"I wanted to. I promise I had no ulterior motive... but I wouldn't mind it if you came with me to try this new restaurant that opened on the high street. Y-You can say no."
Could that be considered a date? Wait... did she want it to be a date?
"I would love to."
"Great! Are you free tomorrow?"
"Yep! Tomorrow works great."
"Amazing. I'm looking forward to it. See you tomorrow, princess."
She watched him walk off before unleashing a wide smile on her face. My first date. She then reluctantly walked off to tutor Minho and found him standing bored in front of the library.
"Took you long enough."
"Sorry, I fell asleep."
"You what? Aren't you supposed to be a total nerd?"
Natasha gave Minho a look and raised her eyebrow. "I'm book-smart. I don't really like school."
"Could have fooled me."
They entered the library and went to the very back, finding an empty table. Natasha put her bag down before she left to go find a maths textbook.
"Okay, what do you find the hardest or the most boring? We should probably start with it."
"Algebra," Minho admitted.
"All of algebra?"
"Well yeah - how the heck do numbers turn into letters and how am I supposed to understand that?"
Natasha sighed. This would be a nightmare.
"Okay, let's start with the basics. If I tell you x = 7, what would x + 1 be?"
"A headache."
She rolled her eyes and smacked him on the head with the textbook.
"Are you even trying?!" She whisper-shouted. Pinching the bridge of her nose, she sighed. "Alright, that was my mistake for not writing it down." She pulled out her planner whiteboard.
"Okay. X = 7. X + 1, wha-"
"You're hot."
Natasha dropped her pen immediately and slowly turned her head to give Minho a death stare. "Well, obviously, but seeing as I have to teach you the whole of algebra, I'd prefer it if you didn't flirt. In fact, let's set some boundaries. I already don't want to be here so you're only going to talk if you have a question or if you answer a question I ask you. And don't bother flirting with me. You won't get anywhere."
"But that's not fun." He pouted and rested a hand on her upper thigh.
"It's not supposed to be fun. Touch me one more time and I swear I'll kick you in the balls so hard, you'll be needing surgery." Natasha warned icily and she pushed his hand off. Minho just looked straight ahead, quite scared from the comment she had just made.
"Okay, sorry. I'll stop being a douche."
Surprisingly, the lesson went by quickly with no interruptions from Minho, and he actually began to understand some of the algebra. Linear equations became a breeze and although quadratics were a bit mind-boggling, he understood how to solve them.
As the lesson ended, Minho packed up his stuff and sheepishly scratched the back of his neck. "I wasn't expecting a lesson today so I don't have any money on me. I'll bring cash tomorrow. But I still want to take you out... you actually helped me understand some of algebra. Thank you. Wanna go get some takeaway?"
"With what money? Cause I would rather eat at home than pay for 2 meals."
"I have my card."
"Sorry, it's still a no. I don't want to spend time with you."
"Wow... most girls would've jumped at the chance," Minho spoke his thoughts. It really looked like he was going to be the one to transfer.
"And most guys would have taken the hint and left me alone by now."
"I guess we both don't follow the crowd... I say that's a match made in heaven."
She rolled her eyes and left, putting in her headphones. Music always managed to calm her down and make her feel like she's having a great day. Lost in her own world, she didn't realise someone following her until she got pulled into a MacDonald.
'"What the - you? Did you follow me all the way here?"
"Yes and no. I wanted to go to MacDonald's and then I saw you and I started following you. I called your name a couple of times but you seemed too observed with the music. Anyways, you're here now so might as well order something."
She rolled her eyes at Minho. She'd be lying if she said she didn't crave a quarter-pounder and chips. She went to order and was about to hand the cashier her money, but Minho tapped his card on the reader before she could. Natasha looked at him, holding her gaze for longer than necessary.
"Take a picture, it'll last longer." Minho said with a smirk.
"I told you I didn't want to eat with you. You shouldn't have payed for me."
"No, you told me that you didn't want to spend time with me. That's different. And it's a MacDonald's. Your order is like £5 max. Paying for that is nothing anyway."
Just then, their order number was called and she went to collect it and immediately pushed past him to go walk alone. Unfortunately, this proved pointless as Minho was still following her around like a lost puppy.
"Look, can you stop stalking me? It's getting kind of creepy."
"You have my food. I've been trying to catch up but you walk so fucking fast - "
Ah. Not everything's about you, Natasha. Where did all this pride come from, anyway?
"Sorry." she sat down on a bench and handed him the bag. They ate in silence before Minho finally worked up the courage to ask her what's been on his mind this whole time.
"Why do you hate me so much?"
Startled, Natasha looked at him confused. "That came out of nowhere."
"I mean, I tried being nice, I tried being flirty and you obviously don't like bad guys so you must really hate me if you react the same cold way each time I try something different."
"What does it matter to you?"
Minho sighed. This whole escapade was massively bruising his ego. "I just want to be friends."
"Why?"
"Well, it'd make the tutor sessions more fun, for starters."
"Okay fine. You really want to know?" Natasha turned and looked him dead in the eye.
"Yes. And don't tell me it's because you believe those god-awful rumours about me being a manwhore."
Natasha let out a dry chuckle. "I started those rumours." She held his gaze. "I bet you really want to kill me, right?"
