Quests,Dragons, and Guards
Disclaimer:I don't own Bethesda Studios,therefore I don't own Skyrim...I do WISH I owned Cicero though...who doesn't love that little mad jester? :D
--Fredas, 23 of Morning Star--
"Every wife should get a greeting from the man they love."
"He owes me one."
'What was he trying to say? Certainly he didn't mean the kiss to the cheek in 'that' way. ' My thoughts were traveling from one thing to the next as we, Cicero, Shadowmere, and I were traveling towards Winterhold. The scenery around us was covered of snow. The huge mountains were snow capped, the ground of Skyrim was covered of the pure white substance as were walking over it; dirtying the once fair snow.
No...he wouldn't. He's only a friend-a comrade. It would not have even mattered, I'm a married woman and every faction has their laws as well. Even the questionable old law filled Dark Brotherhood has their laws, something I knew but did not know at the same time in the past.
"Oh, Listener~" I glanced down at Cicero's squeaky high-pitched call from Shadowmere's back. Shadowmere is a horse- more like demon horse- with obsidian fur, silky mane and with red piercing eyes. I received him when I just started in the Brotherhood. He was a gift from someone...a friend. I made a hum of acknowledgement and waited for his response to know what he wanted, not distracted anymore from my previous thoughts.
"We are nearing Winterhold, dear Listener."
I looked back at what was in front of me, there, still quite a few meters away I saw the top of the College of Winterhold. The jaw-dropping slightly snow covered building towered over the small city; a city that used to be huge even rivaling Solitude before The Great Collapse*. As we were getting nearer, we were beginning to see the high walls that gives protection to the tall stone made building. The bridge was coming in to sight as well.
"So it seems, thank you Cicero" I coolly replied back to him as he stared at me. He looked like he wanted to say more but thought better of it. He spoke again nonetheless.
"Listener, may I enlighten you with a question~?" His question was polite, but his tone was teasing. Basically what he always sounds like, yet this time with a touch of anxiousness. As though I would say no.
I smirked at the thought.
After all the time we've spent together and went through, he still needs to be polite. Or perhaps it was the loyal Keeper side of him asking this question. Either way, I don't think I can ever get used to this. Him praising me more than a priest or priestess of Talos** and just basically yelling it to the whole world of my achievements. Whether it be my killings, my master stealth, or how I eat a sweet roll. But especially when I do my killings.
I nodded towards him as response as I was lost in my thoughts.
"Why did you accept that request for that court wizard? But not just that Listener, but all those other requests you accept from strangers or just acquaintances. You accept them with no hesitation." His voice suddenly turned serious and his face was blank. With the exception with his brows slightly furrowed. It's rare when he turns serious...
I kept silent as he went on, and then I started to seewhere this was going.
"I understand that the Listener is the Listener and I, as the Keeper, should not question you and your kind actions. But why? Why waste time on those non-believers? And those who you don't even have a contract with?" His questions and reasoning makes sense, even though he said the last two questions with distaste. Like he wouldn't waste time on those people.
I was about to answer but then-
"We are here."
We both stopped in front of the The Frozen Hearth inn. The building looked the same as any other in Skyrim, with hay being used as a sort of roof with horizontal wooden beams supporting under it. And the entrance to the door was a sort of altar made out of that hay and wood and was lead up by a small staircase. I got off from Shadowmere's back to go inside and get what was requested of me. I walked towards the little staircase, when I was stopped by a voice.
"By order of the Jarl, stop right there!" I turned around and face the guy who stopped me. A guard. A Winterhold guard. 'Great. Now what the heck happened?'
"You have committed crimes against Skyrim and her people. What say you in your defense?" 'Uhhhhhh... What?'
In my confusion, I didn't see Cicero-who was in my right and not on the steps- tensing as if being prepared for battle.
A tornado of thoughts and questions overcame me. What the heck did I even do?! I don't even remember! I think Winterhold is just out to get me in general, this is like sixth time that this has happened to me. What the heck do I say?!
'Oh, here's my money. I hope you can forgive me for whatever bloody Void I did.'
'Smart woman.'
1,000 septims?! Heck no!
'Ummmmm... I'm Thane?'
'Oh,sorry Thane. Move along.'
IM NOT THANE HERE! THIS JARL DOESNT DO ANYTHING BUT SIT IN HIS THRONE AND LOOK PITIFUL!
Grrrrrrrr...
'I submit take me to jail.'
'Ha, enjoy the chill.'
No. No! I will not enjoy the chill,I've been there too many times already. Oh,and my pride will be torn to shreds! The only times I've been in that jail is back then when I rebelled against the guards and I was too weak to fight everybody. Or, I just wanted to escape their jail. What? Jail breaking from the Winterhold jail is fun. And challenging. And fun. As I continued to look blankly at the guard and trying to figure out what the heck I'm going to say, the guard quickly took his sword out and attempted a swing at me.
"Oh, shit!" I exclaimed loudly and quickly backed up towards the door and took my weapons out. He tried to swing at me again but I went around him so we could fight on solid ground.
I noticed two more guards coming at us as well to the left. But I was too confused and angry about what happened. Besides, it seems that Shadowmere and Cicero are taking care of them.
"What the heck was that?! I didn't even answer you yet!" I yelled out loudly.
The two guards were having trouble with Cicero using his ebony dagger slashing and stabbing while yelling out-
"Stab you, stab you, stab you!"
And Shadowmere was stomping on another while neighing loudly.
...
I wonder what will happen if Lucien*** the unfriendly assassin ghost comes. I summoned him and he immediately went to work, which is to help Shadowmere since he was the closest. Good, he didn't say that ridiculous thing he always says when I summon him.
"All hail the savior of the Dark Brotherhood! All hail the Listener!" Lucien bellowed loudly as he successfully slashed the guard and killed him as a result.
'It seems that I spoke too soon as always',I thought with a sweatdrop.
Hm? I heard a sound of clinking septims inside my journal. I quickly took it out to check how much the bounty got raised.
'Another 1,000?!' I thought with horror and despair evidently on my face.
Besides being able to fast travel to your destined location, the Dragonborn is also aware when a bounty is placed and if a bounty rose. It notifies you inside the Dragonborn's journal, where they keep track on their ongoing quests and of their completed quests. It also tells the Dragonborn's history, which includes how many things they have stolen, how high a bounty they have ever gotten, how many times they have slept on a bed, and how many times they transformed into either a werewolf or vampire. There are a bunch of other information that is inside the journal about the Dragonborn and the things they have done in their time in Skyrim. It is quite a useful tool, and is only available to the Dragonborn. Because it will not work for any other civilian in Skyrim and that it is an item that is impossible to steal. Even Riftens finest theives from the infamous Thieves Guild aren't able to obtain it.
'The prison of Winterhold is not a place I want to be in.' I thought again as I put my journal back where it belonged while despair was still coursing through me. 1000 septims may seem a lot to some people,as well as me, but I can actually afford that. I have way more money than I think even the nobles of Solitude have. It's just that I save a lot in my home and I travel with little. And 'little' right now is 15,000. I'm just a cheap person and I don't like wasting money which I've earned...
Well, a few earned.
I looked at the continuing battle with the two guards against Cicero, Shadowmere, and Lucien. With Cicero still yelling loudly and slashing, Shadowmere stomping, and Lucien slashing as well. Not sure how they are still not defeated yet, I thought halfheartedly, still upset with the raise of 1,000 septims on my bounty. As I continued to look, I saw Shadowmere defeat an interesting opponent.
Did...Shadowmere just stomp a chicken to death? I thought shocked at the action, and just continued to stare at the still chicken in the bushes by the continuing battle only a few feet in front of me.
I heard another septims clinking sound from my journal and so I checked it again.
...
Are you freaking kidding me?! Another?! For a chicken?!
Another 1,000 septims were added to my bounty for Winterhold. I suddenly remember another instance in my early adventures of Skyrim when I was in Riverwood*** and I was playing around with my bow and arrow. I was aiming at a chicken while I was playing around but when I wanted to put the bow down, it released the arrow on accident and killed the chicken. The whole town of Riverwood started attacking out of nowhere. The two guards, the civilians, even the old lady Hilde. I had to run away from that madness, not wanting to kill anybody. Later of course, I had to pay the bounty even though it was ridiculous.
What is up with Skyrim's people and their chickens ?! I thought angrily.
Roooooooaarrrr
Great, a dragon! Oh how the divines love me!
...
* The Great Collapse was a geological event that devastated Winterhold. In 4E 122, a seemingly never ending series of storms attacked at the northern coast of Skyrim, eventually causing the city to erode alarmingly fast and washed away into the Sea of Ghosts. The event crippled the city but miraculously left The College of Winterhold largely unharmed.
** Talos is one of the Nine Divines, which was as a result of the Dragonborn winning the Civil War between the Imperials and Nords. He was the greatest hero-god of Mankind and is worshipped as the protector and patron of just ruler ship and civil society.
*** Lucien Lachance was a past member of the Dark Brotherhood as the Speaker. He can be summoned by the Dragonborn by using Spectral Assassin. He often comments his days as a Speaker, on the Dragonborn's decisions during the Dark Brotherhood quest-line, and that he and they(the Dragonborn) are connected through the Void.
A/N : Honestly today, I got worked up from the lack of good fanfics right now. And so I decided to update.
And for those who are wondering, all of this, the trip to Winterhold, the stupid guard, the stupid guard attacking me because I didn't pick what to say yet, the chicken, the past chicken incident, and the dragon coming out of nowhere actually happened to me in the game.
-__-
Yeah, I have the worst luck. :/
And about the past chicken incident, I actually DID kill everybody the first time. Except for the kids of course, since you just can't. But then I realized that I go to Whiterun a lot aaaaaaand I think I killed Delphine too sooooooo... Yeah, I kinda needed her to move on with the storyline. And the town seemed depressing with dead bodies everywhere.
And NOW, I'm going to work on the next chapter. Until I have a fanfic distract me from that task
...
What am I doing with my life?
I will say this again, I have no excuse then saying I have a procrastination problem.
But I DID manage to make this chapter a little longer. By 300 words, which isn't as much as I wanted but... MOVING ON!
AND SORRY FOR THE LONG A/N!!DX
IM A RAMBLER!!
