Poisoned Tea and Kindness
Skylar's POV
We got new clothes and mine looks nicer then the guys. Right now, I'm meditating quiet peacefully while Iroh examines a plant. Zuko went to find food. "I didn't find anything to eat! I can't live like this! I wasn't meant to be a fugitive. This is impossible!" Zuko shouts as he appears. I sigh in annoyance opening my eyes to see him looking at Iroh. "Uncle, what are you doing?" he asks him.
"You're looking at the rare white dragon bush. Its leaves make a tea so delicious, it's heartbreaking. That, or it's the white jade, which is poisonous" Iroh states.
"We need food, not tea" Zuko tells him.
"He's right, come on Zuko I'll show you how to fish water tribe style" I tell him.
"Don't touch that plant uncle" Zuko tells him before following me towards the river. I grab two hand made spears.
"The key to fishing is patients and slow steady movements. So as not to spoke the fish" I tell him. I hand him a spear and hop onto a rock in the middle of the river. I focus on the water and spot a decent sized fish. I wait and then throw my spear impaling it. Then pull the spear from the water to show Zuko. "See simple, you try" I tell him smiling.
Zuko tries and misses several times. He starts to get angry. "Violence won't solve the problem" I tell him. "Let me help" I say getting behind him. I place my hands on his and show him how to hold the spear. "Hold it like this and focus, patients" I instruct.
We spot a fish and I have him wait. Then help him through the spear. It impales the fish, but it was smaller then mine. "I did it" he says happily.
"With practice, you'll be a fine fisher" I tell him. "Lets return to camp and I'll show you some safe fruits to eat" I add. We got some apples which I carry while he carries the spears with fish. We enter the camp to see Iroh facing away from us.
"Zuko, Skylar remember that plant I thought might be tea?" Iroh asks us.
"You didn't" I groan.
"I did and it wasn't" he states. He turns to face us and we drop the food in alarm. At seeing the rashes covering his arms, face and legs. "When the rash spreads to my throat, I will stop breathing. But look what I found. These are bacui berries, known to cure the poison of the white jade. That, or maka'ole berries that cause blindness" he explains. Zuko snatches the berries from him.
"We're not taking any more chances with these plants!" Zuko exclaims.
"We need help" I state.
"But where are we going to go? We're enemies of the Earth Kingdom and fugitives from the Fire Nation" Iroh states.
"Correction, you're enemies of the Earth Kingdom. Not me" I remind him.
"Doesn't change the fact, if the Earth Kingdom discovers us. They'll have us killed" Zuko tells me.
"But if the Fire Nation discovers us, we'll be turned over to Azula" Iroh states.
"And I'll be turned over to the Fire Lord" I add.
"Earth Kingdom it is" Zuko announces. We then all go to search for help. We soon arrive at a village and find a doctor to help Iroh. A girl name Song is putting ointment on his rashes.
"You three must not be from around here. We know better than to touch the White Jade, much less make it into tea and drink it" she states.
"We told him not to, before we went to fish" I tell her.
"So where are you traveling from?" she asks us.
"Yes, we're travelers" Zuko says and I elbow him. Can he be a worse lair. Song asks us what our names are. "Names? Of course we have names. I'm, uh ... Lee and this is my Uncle, uh ... Mushi" he tells her.
Iroh shots him an angry look. "Yes, my nephew was named after his father, so we just call him Junior" he tells Song smiling. "Oh this is his fiance Yuki" he adds and I blush madly with Zuko.
"Oh how lovely, that explains the betrothal necklace. I thought that was a water tribe tradition" Song says confused.
"My grandparents are from the southern water tribe" I tell her.
"You three look like you could use a good meal. Why don't you stay for dinner?" she suggests. She slaps Iroh's hand away as he goes to scratch his rashes.
"Sorry, but we need to be moving on" Zuko tells her.
"That's too bad. My mom always makes too much roast duck" Song states.
"Where do you live exactly?" Iroh asks her and I glare at him. Seriously he's worse then Sokka when it comes to food. We all followed Song to her house where her mother allows us to stay for dinner. I stick to the salad while Zuko and Iroh happily dig into the roast duck.
"My daughter tells me you're refugees. We were once refugees ourselves" Song's mother states.
"When I was a little girl, the Fire Nation raided our farming village. All the men were taken away. That was the last time I saw my father" Song states.
"I was recently reunited with my father, but he had to go back to the war" I tell her.
"I haven't seen my father in many years" Zuko states.
"Is he fighting in the war too?" Song asks him.
"Yeah" he says hesitantly before leaving the table.
"Song tells me you're engaged to Lee, is he ok?" Song's mother asks me.
"He's fine, his father is just a sore subject" I tell her. "I should go check on him" I say and leave. Though we're not really together, we have to act like we are because of Iroh. It'd be suspicious if I didn't check on him. "Can I join you?" I ask and he nods his head.
"I'm sorry about my uncle putting us in this position" he tells me.
"It's ok, besides it's not like we have to actually marry. It's just a cover story" I assure him. "Did I tell you I was engaged to a stranger from the North Pole?" I ask him.
"No" he says shocked.
"He's name was Kyle and he was a complete gentleman. He was a strong warrior, but I knew I could never love him. So we fought and I defeated him in a fight. He annulled the arranged marriage, now I'm free to find love. Honestly I don't think I'll ever find him" I explain quietly.
"Why not? A guy would be crazy not to fall for you" he states. Then we both blush looking away from each other. "I just meant, you're strong, smart and easy on the eyes" he mumbles.
"Thank you Zuko and you're not so bad yourself" I tell him smiling gently.
"But my..." he says raising his hand to his scared face. I grab his hand and pull it away. Replacing it with my own hand.
"You're scar does not define you or who you are deep down. It shows you're a fighter, that no matter what you face. You will survive it" I tell him smiling.
"I never thought about it that way" he says quietly. We go back inside for dessert. Then go to leave as Iroh and I thank Song's mother for the food.
"Lee, where are your manners? You need to thank these nice people" I tell him smiling.
He turns and bows saying "thank you". The three of us start to leave when we see two ostrich-horses tied up. Zuko goes and unties them, handing one to Iroh.
"What are you doing?" I ask him confused as he mounts his ostrich-horse. "These people have shown us nothing but kindness" I tell him.
"They're about to show us a little more kindness" he tells me. Iroh sighs mounting his ostrich-horse. Zuko looks at me with a raised eyebrow and asks "well?"
"This doesn't feel right" I tell him. He groans in annoyance and pulls me onto his lap. Making me squeak in alarm and grab a hold of his shirt. I glare at him as we ride away from Snog's house.
