6. Journey Beginnings

"...and that is how you successfully sow an oak tree." Explained Stump Smash to his class. Glancing away from the pot, he noticed the bored looks on the faces of all six of the students who signed up to his botany lessons. All, that is, except for one. Known simply as Edward, the small mabu child was by far the most interested in his classes. Whilst Picky the greeble and Meredith the living pepper were both vaguely interested about plants, Edward seemed to love nothing more than Stump Smash's lessons. Stump didn't mind all that much, though, for he was happy his hobby was of interest to a young mind like his. In fact, he'd been taking extra lessons to solidify his knowledge. In this particular lesson, he had been beaming throughout, mainly because his favourite teacher and Skylander had successfully bested everyone and become a legendary.

"SIR!" He shouted out for the sixth time, "HAVE YOU GOT YOUR LEGENDARY ARMOUR YET?" Stump Smash needed no reminder of his success. Though he had tried to supress the pride, he could make no impact upon it. It kept flooding into his mind, making him feel like he could potentially be one of the greatest Skylanders out there. After all, is that not what the legendary status alluded to? He wanted to frown to Edward, but his smile had already smothered his facial features.

"Not yet, Edward." He replied, fully aware that he would be leaving to receive it as soon as the bell rang. "Now, class," he continued as if nothing had happened, "I wanted to give you a surprise for this lesson." A scan of the room suggested that he had drawn attention to himself.

"A surprise?" Asked Meredith, her eyes widening. "What kind of surprise?" Stump was glad she asked.

"Are any of you familiar with the Popcorn Volcano?" Stump inquired, taking a close look at everyone's faces. Even Ritchie – the least interested of his class – could be seen glancing up towards him, only partially distracted. In particular, he noticed that Picky had his hand raised. "Yes?"

"Popcorn Volcano – also known as Mount Tastesgood – is where Hot Dog comes from, isn't it, sir?" He clarified, knowing very well that he had his facts right. Stump Smash nodded.

"But what causes the Popcorn Volcano to erupt, my boy?"

"The corn, sir." Picky replied. "Which comes from the..." His face was priceless as he worked out what the surprise was.

"Indeed," said Stump, "I shall be giving each of you a seed from the corntrees which reside on the Popcorn Volcano." He explained, beginning to hand out the six seeds, each with a piece of card which held instructions. Edward and Picky examined the palm-sized seed methodically, looking for anything which could make them any more excited than they already were. Not only were they thrilled about the prospect of planting such a seed and watching it grow, but they also knew how difficult it was to obtain these seeds, as Picky pointed out.

"These trees only grow on the Popcorn Volcano!" He enthused, continuing to stare at nothing but his glorious prize. "They're worth hundreds of gold each! How did you get these?" Their teacher smiled.

"A gift from a friend." He replied, estimating that the bell should go off shortly. And, indeed it did, making the end of the last lesson of term, a few days after the one previous. Officially speaking, term had already ended, but Stump and his class had one final lesson, the lesson which had just passed. "Class dismissed." He announced, but they didn't need to be told; six students vanished instantly from the room. Another good lesson, Stump thought to himself as he slumped into his chair for a few moments. He liked teaching; it was true. However, he reminded himself as he began to rush out like the children, there was a prize he had to redeem...

"Hallo there!" Said Chill, striking her unmistakable legendary colours. "Are you ready for the walk?" He glanced at her, a noble warrior, and nodded. Chill was the kind of person he had always admired but feared. She was brave, daring, skilled and didn't dare refuse a challenge. And whilst many would put those characteristics to all Skylanders, nobody fitted the mould better than Chill. That being said, he sometimes doubted her moral compass. She wished to fight the fight, but he was never confident that she knew the side she was on. He knew his concerns were not grounded in any evidence, but he was sure that she had many dark secrets that she would never have let Eon know about. With a simple nod, Stump agreed.

The walk, ah yes. He had been fully briefed about this previously. Essentially, a small team would portal to the Great Ancient Cliffs and hike to the clifftop where they would find a stunning sight: the Lake of Legends. "The tradition is ancient." Cali had told him, "All you must do is take a sip of the water and then you will be a legend." Could it really be that simple? Stump understood the power of water, but could it really be what gives legendary armour? However, he kept his doubts to himself.

"It's a good day to return to the lake." Chill shared, "I would have it no other way." Stump nodded again, causing her to turn to him. "Nervous?"

"No." Stump Smash replied. "Stump Smash does not get nervous."

"Then I am not the one you would have chosen to accompany you?" She inquired. Stump Smash had looked through those who could have accompanied him, and it was possible that Chill would have been his last pick. He admired her battle, but he felt like she'd stop at no lengths to get where she needed to be. He had envisaged been accompanied by Bouncer or, perhaps, Jet-Vac. But he didn't really care all that much. If it was Chill, it was Chill.

"I don't mind." He countered. She simply did not believe him but decided to leave it there. The two stood in silence until Cali arrived, dressed in a red hiking outfit.

"You guys ready for some hiking?" She chuckled, throwing the two a hat each. Chill examined the hat and frowned.

"Must we wear these stupid things?" She complained, staring down at the cactus she was supposed to place on her head. Stump was sharing similar feeling, staring at the crown of frost that he had no intention of wearing.

"I know you two are Skylanders," Cali answered, "but I'm not taking any risks." Stump wanted to groan, but he also wanted to look professional in front of the ever-scarier Chill. So, instead, he revealed the crown to the icy warrior.

"Perhaps you'd like to trade?" Stump suggested, noting the trendy hat she had in her possession.

"Knock yourself out." Chill agreed, grabbing the crown from his hand and allowing the cactus hat to drift into Stump's possession. He proudly placed he headwear on, knowing that he almost certainly looked amazing.

"Let's get a move on, guys!" Cali instructed, "hop onto the portal and let's get hiiiiiking!" Chill quickly made her way onto the portal of power, shortly followed by Stump Smash. "Off we go!" She called enthusiastically as the portal bloomed into life and produced a flash of light before they were gone.
