24. The Lost Ally

"And there it is," revealed Cali, leaning across the side of the Astronave, "Mystic Mill." Mystic was one word for it, for sure, but Chill was not so sure it was worthy of it. While, yes, she understood its management had been disputed over the last few. Two disputing parties: Dr Krankcase was of course quick to point out that the mill had been his. Yet, technically the territory had been only claimed by nefarious means and thus was claimed by the original owner, a mabu who went by the name of Blobbers. Chill remembered the Mabu Monthly's front cover upon the discovery: titled 'Good luck at last for the luckless!' Chill liked to challenge this idea of 'good luck.' Sure, he fell onto a fortune, but its value lay in his accessibility to it. The property market, especially in Skylands of all places, was a troublesome thing and Chill would have hated to dabble in it, but even she knew that all of the value in the property was tied to its condition. This place was destitute at best.

The cobbled buildings were tired and crumbling. The wood was rotting (despite being enchanted, Chill scoffed to herself) and there was no signs of civilization whatsoever. Chill exited the ship with a skilful jump, followed by some of the other spirito souls, including Luna. Chill, alike Stump Smash before her, had become drawn to the child. She was well disciplined, silent and – if the account of Thumpback was accurate – deadly. It reminded her of somebody, but she couldn't quite put her finger upon it. The mission was simple: find anything that would be useful. Although caught between a rock and a hard place, it could still have some staff? Chill found it unlikely, but Cali seemed hopeful. So, willing to at least give the place a shot, she proceeded.

She thought of Stump Smash and Thumpback and their journey with Shroom Boom. What were they thinking taking the word of that troublemaker? Nothing suggested by that fungi had ever been successful. Not while she was around, anyway. A grudge? No. This was not a grudge. This was experience. She knew teamwork was imperative to her role as a Skylander and she was fine with that. Being part of a crew was what she thrived on. But Shroom Boom? He was a troublesome one. He was out there for fun. He had nothing to lose, no dignity to protect. He was a weakness and not one she intended to stick around with. Everyone else would soon see that when their mission proved to be unsuccessful. They'd see.

No, if it was a grudge, he'd be restrained in the cargo deck with the other creep they'd picked up. At the end of the day, Shroom Boom was a Skylander and she had to believe in Eon's judgement. Could he really- No, this was Shroom Boom they were talking about. She knew what he did. A Skylander, really? The position had been taken from so few, but she thought that what he did should constitute it, surely? Alas, she wished to resign herself from the thought. He was immature and reckless, with or without the incident. Her annoyance was founded either way. But still, she disregarded the thought for now.

Why was it she got on so well with that freak in the cargo, then? They'd scuffled once or twice before. He'd never been too much of a challenge, but she enjoyed the action. There had been so many eager pirates trying to invade avalanche ships, that she had become quite accustomed to their style. She'd been ruthless, in fact. Within Chill's rise within the empire had seen such pirate intolerance that a fortress, known to its inhabitants as the Ice Block, was erected to hold thousands of pirates. They'd beg mercy, but the Snow Queen was clear: "Pirates show no mercy, so why should we show mercy to pirates?" Still, that didn't stop Chill from defecting after the empire's fall. Everyone grieves in one way or another, she supposed, and her method was to go do something that went against her principles. And you know what, her principles did change. She once hated pirates, but she now held some kind of, well, lenience. They were fun in their own way. Usually stupidly greedy and treacherous and always out for revenge, but fun all the same.

That Squidbeard, though... He wasn't as stupid as they usually come. Of all of the generations of pirates, he was one of the top 50 who had ever lived. A legend, yes, but also a relic of the past. Those Arkeyans and their methods. Too weak to contain ol' Frightbeard, but smart enough to keep a relic like him lively as ever while the ages pressed on. He had the temper of Kaos, though, there was no denying that. Still, it amused her. Why? She enjoyed manipulating him. She already had a shortlist of one hundred islands Rustbeard could be, and she knew he had a fleet. The best part, of course, was that Squidbeard thought he had the upper hand. Never did someone have an upper hand to Chill, she thought to herself, looking amused.

"NOT ONE MORE STEP, SKYLANDER!!" A screechy voice yelled out from above. Chill defaulted into the defensive at once, scouting the perimeter. "Oh, Chill, do you not remember me??" That voice... it was familiar. She'd been so caught up in her head that she'd wandered far into the mill without even really considering her goals. She couldn't source the noise.

"Show yourself!" She called out.

"As you wish." With a puff of smoke, a red figure appeared before her. Two long, pointy ears, a shining helmet and, in the creature's hands, two smooth, metal instruments. Chill recognised the figure at once.

"I never thought the day would come where I'd see you again," she greeted, letting her guard down at once. She approached. "It's been a long ti-" The figure batted her aside with one of his metal rods, transforming into a mace.

"Thetime for greeting me with open arms has ended, Chill," he said as he circledher, "You were right about one thing, though..." He stopped and paused in frontof her, "It has been a long time." With a final whack, her consciousness lefther.
