2. Glumshanks

"So," began Flynn, "whatcha been up to Hugo?" Hugo, still content in his obsession with tinkering with the portal, ignored Flynn's current existence entirely; the portal was his only current interest. That being said, he did long to wander through the vast library which once sat under Eon's Citadel, especially considering that there may have been something, anything to find Master Eon. Maybe a book on spirits that his eyes had never stumbled upon. If only he'd looked more deeply... He breathed in and reminded himself that he had to keep working. It was the only way to keep his mind off of it. In a last resort attempt, Hugo stood up.

Flynn stared to the small mabu. While he was somewhat fond of Hugo, he wasn't quite sure of how to get Hugo out of the destructive path he was leading himself to. "The weather is nice today, eh Hugo?" He asked in an attempt to do something. Hugo, surprisingly, spoke.

"Uh, I'm sure it is." He replied, not making eye contact and scurrying away from the portal. Nothing had worked so far, so he needed to go bigger. "Interesting as the weather is, Flynn, I have much more, um, interesting work." And before Flynn could put a second word in, Hugo was gone.

Flynn sighed and returned to the courtyard and took a look at the shrinking crowd that stood around him. That's when he noticed someone in the crowd, sheepishly looking around. "HEY!" Flynn called as he darted in the direction of the troll, someone who he considered an enemy. Indeed, it was Glumshanks himself, servant of Lord Kaos. Upon hearing Flynn's call, he turned to Flynn and bowed his head in shame, not even bothering to run away, though he did consider it. However, as Flynn made his way over to the figure, the attention on Glumshanks was also picked up by another figure who had hidden themselves away in the crowd.

"Unhand that troll!" Ordered Buzz as he hopped his way to the scene. Flynn, now holding Glumshanks by the arm, did as asked upon a few seconds of consideration. "Need I remind you that Glumshanks was freed 3 months ago?" He reminded an oblivious Flynn.

"He was-?" Flynn began in disbelief, before correcting his error with a lie. "Oh, Glumshanks?" He asked, looking the troll up and down, "I thought this was, uh, Glumtanks!" He lied, patting Glumshanks down. "Sorry, ol' pal, I didn't recognise you." He chuckled, proud of his very flawless cover-up of his incompitance.

"I see what you mean..." Buzz said, looking again at Glumshanks (who was not quite used to the attention), "Good spot, Flynn, we wouldn't want Glumtanks on the lose, now would we?" He responded, patting Flynn hard on the back.

"And, uh, why was Glumshanks, here, freed?" Flynn wondered out loud, "Y'know, for Glummy's benefit."

"Well," Buzz began, scratching his head, "he did save the Academy a couple of years ago when Kaos built the Sky Eater and tried to kill us all. Of course, we saved him, but his good intentions are clear."

"Ah, yes." Flynn agreed, looking back on the terrifying experience of Kaos' rule of Skylands. He still had nightmares to date, though he cared not to admit. "So, Glumshanks," he continued, placing his arm around Glumshanks and squeezing him close to him, "what brings you to Skylanders Academy?"

"W-Well, um," the troll stuttered, trying to figure out the words, "I'd quite like - if you don't mind me requesting - to, um-"

"Spit out out, lad!" Buzz encouraged aggressively.

"I'd like to be a Skylander." He finalised, placing his hands on his hips in a heroic stance. After a few moments of silence, Flynn began to laugh. Well, I suppose laughing could be a small chuckle, but certainly this laugh was not small. He must've laughed for about a minute, just comparing Glumshanks to the Skylanders in his head. Buzz shot him a look, though he was sharing the same doubts.

"Oh, you're serious?" Flynn asked, when he looked up and saw the misery that Glumshanks seemed to be experiencing from his response. "Well, maybe if you got a little more meat on your arms-"

"Skylanders Academy would be lucky to have you!" Buzz chanted, pushing Flynn to the side. "Though I must say that not all Skylander Cadets make their way through the ranks, we can arrange a meeting in - let's say - three days?" Buzz decided, cheering Glumshanks up considerably.

"T-Thank you, sir." Glumshanks smiled before he awkwardly ran away. Buzz then turned to Flynn.

"I don't like the guy, but we still gotta give 'im a shot." Buzz explained, walking back towards the Academy with Flynn at his side. "In order to find the finest Skylanders, you have to take risks." Flynn nodded. "When I was told to train a robot, who you'll know as 'Jawbreaker', I was not fond of him." He remembered. "After all, it was my jaw that he broke!" He chuckled, much to Flynn's doubt. "Anyway, I took the risks to train him that took him to the extremes he is at today!" Buzz smiled weakly. He stopped and turned to Flynn. "It's your turn now." Patting him on the shoulder gently, Buzz walked away.

Flynn frowned as he saw Buzz wander away. Buzz turned to face Flynn as he got on a transport ship. It was at this moment that Flynn knew that he wasn't coming back.
