19. Shattered Island

The shattered islands, on first inspection, seemed like a shattered mess. This was clear enough. It begged the question of why they were visiting in the first place. Yet, as they drew closer, they realised this was simply a façade; the 'shattered islands' were long since shattered. A great set of sturdy islands, filled with a flurry of excitement sat in the centre of what was otherwise the splintered remains of a seven-year-old disaster. A disaster which left a clear scar, though one which seemed to help with publicity. Indeed, the every sign pointing in the direction of shattered island was capitalising a great deal on the twister that engulfed their small kingdom; the deadly vortex was the backdrop of the bold text 'SHATTERED ISLAND', making Cali wonder how much the twister actually destroyed their livelihoods.

This thought took a backseat as bricks landed on deck, souvenirs of a disastrous time. Each of them was eroded by a great power, large chunks bitten straight out as if by a monster. Yet, Cali knew precisely what had happened here, indeed. She wasn't present, but she had heard the stories. A great tornado ripped through the land and would have been set to destroy not only the village but its people too. Had it not been for the miraculous return of the Skylanders, many would have been lost. Hence, she thought it quite unjust for the event to be used to promote their services. It was conceited and plain wrong. Yet, she kept her thoughts to herself as they landed in the docks. There was no denying the success they had achieved as a result of their frank advertising, for Shattered Island was now much grander than anything it had been before. Once a village, now a great city with a grand castle on one side of the island. Grand as the castle of King Flavius, even.

It was not long after jumping down onto the docks that the scale of things were yet clearer. There was room for five-or-so great ships and even more room for balloons, a vessel which had always been preferred on Shattered Island. It was a changed place; though, of course it was. There was nary a piece of the old island within the new. Afterall, those pieces still remained orbiting the main island. Luci and Chill followed Cali.

"Why, this is quite a splendid city, don't you think?" Luci concluded, doing a little twirl before scanning the horizon for activity.

"It's..." Chill began, kneeling down to examine the wooden docks before turning to her feet, "It's fine. I never had the opportunity to visit Shattered Island before its ironic downfall. I never imagined it to fell so, well... superficial." Cali nodded, feeling as if the words had been taken from her mouth. However, she proceeded forward, leading the groups into the city. A great wall made of red bricks had been erected around the city, providing an aesthetically pleasing border which would give no real defensive advantage. A break in the wall let them in, but they were surprised by what they found.

"It's a ghost town," Chill commented, looking to Cali for an explanation. Had she really been brought all the way out here for some pointless errand?

"A great festival was being held, however," Luci pointed out, "I remember observing from above. I believe it was within the castle's borders... a courtyard, perha-" Luci was cut off as the earth beneath them began to shake. A loud screeching emanated from the castle itself, a crack appearing lengthways through it, visible even with the group's distance. "Am I to take it this is bad?"

"Bad? Oh, yeah: this is very bad," she confirmed as she began to rush towards the castle. It would take a good few minutes to rush over, but she had no intention of allowing the shattered island to shatter again. They all pulled their weight, ignoring any eagerness to rest; lives were at stake. Alas, things took a turn for the worse still. The castle continued to fracture, more and more crumbling away with every inch the group neared. By the time they reached the castle's gate, a great tearing noise echoed across the island. The uppermost half of the castle began to elevate. Up and up it went, seemingly of its own accord, until – at last – the source of this incident was clear at once.

It was a familiar sight, yet different all the same. A colourful orb, perfectly rounded and pretty. It glowed like a rainbow trapped within a marble, a kaleidoscope for the world to see. However, the power it possessed was seemingly endless as it continued to edge the castle further into the sky, leaving its lowermost floor exposed and unroofed. Screams could be heard from within its walls, so Cali leaped without hesitation onto the side of the wall and began to pull herself up. Chill followed suit, whilst Luci remained to observe the strange anomaly.

There were hundreds of mabu, terrified for their lives, all standing, sitting or lying at the edge of the castle's walls, keeping as far away from the centre as possible. Why? This is precisely what Cali wondered until she noticed the portal which lay prominent in the courtyard's display. A portal; of course! The Shattered Island had remained prominent due to its link to the Skylanders. Would the king really feel safe without a portal? Ironic, perhaps, seeing the peril it now placed him in. Chill ran to Cali.

"I fear there are still some in the skyward castle," Chill notified, "specifically the king." Cali suspected this, of course, but the revelation was daunting. She dug into her bag and quickly allowed a SEAL to fill her hand.

"If we can get this onto the rift, we've got it trapped. But what then? The castle falls? The king dies??" Cali asked, resting her other hand on her head as she rapidly tried to think. Chill looked aside and jumped atop the portal, hoping dearly that it was deactivated. She whistled loudly, evoking the attention of all.

"Listen up! We're going to get all of you out of here, you just need to stay calm," she commanded. She could sense the eyes watching her but did not flinch. She pointed to Cali, "Cali is going to get the gate open to start with, so we can evacuate you all to a safer location. Do you know where that might be?"

A mabu stepped forward, "Hello, I am !" he said, his voice much calmer than those of hissurrounding people, "There is an emergency shelter in the centre of the islandin case of another happening such as this; I advise we refuge there for thetime being." As he spoke, Cali managed to kick down the gate and a flood ofmabu began swarming out at once, though Orville stayed behind. "Thank you,Skylander," he greeted before waddling on after the rest.
