Chapter 8__Legends of Today
I had been practicing with my powers, trying to do better and be better than I had before, because there's someone out there who was better and stronger than I was, and I needed to be ready.
Barry was trying to go faster than he had ever gone before so he could be ready for the other threat.
In STAR Labs, Barry was zooming on the treadmill in the training room.
Caitlin, Harrison and I were watching from behind the glass.
"He just hit 1,375," Caitlin told us.
"The fastest that Barry has ever ran, and the fastest I have ever flown, was a little over Mach two, when we went back in time," I told them.
"That's not good," Harrison told us. He spoke through the mic to talk to Barry. "That's good, Barry." He looked at Caitlin and me. "We have our work cut out for us."
Caitlin nodded.
Barry walked toward us. "I'm not getting faster, am I?"
"Well..." Caitlin trailed off.
"No, you're not," Harrison answered.
"All right, well, let's fix this, right?" Barry asked. "I mean, I can't beat Zoom at this speed. It felt like I was standing still next to him."
"That's because you practically were," Harrison told him. "Zoom is at least three, four times faster than you at this point."
"And, uh, I could fight against Phoenix, but the fire that came from her..." I trailed off. "It was strong and hot enough to make me go blind. She shot fire out of her eyes. How are they so much stronger than Barry and I are and Jay and Quinn were?"
"Physiology, form, could be a number of things," Harrison told us. "Attitude, diet."
"Okay, all right, well, there's got to be something we can do about it, so let's just figure it out, fast, okay?" Barry asked.
Barry and I walked out, leaving.
~
A guy had tried to kill Cisco and his girlfriend Kendra at Jitters, but Barry had saved them, and the guy had disappeared.
Cisco had said Barry's name even though Barry had been in the Flash suit, outing his identity.
Everyone was in the Cortex at STAR Labs.
Kendra looked from the Flash and Pyra suits to Barry and me. "I can't believe that you're the Flash and Pyra." She looked at Cisco. "And that you work with them."
I chuckled. "Yeah, let's keep that on the down low."
Barry had a knife from the fight on the table--an Egyptian knife. "This is the same knife that was used to kill the men at the docks. Residue is a perfect match."
"So it is the same guy," Joe told us.
"Definitely," Barry answered. "But the thing is, these blades are old. Centuries old."
Iris looked at Kendra. "Do you have any idea why this guy would be after you?"
"No," Kendra answered. "I've never seen him before in my life."
"Well, he was certainly acting like he knew you," Cisco told her. "He kept calling her Priestess Chay-Ara."
"That's Coptic," Harrison told us.
"You mean Egyptian?" Caitlin asked.
"That's right," Harrison answered.
"Well, I grew up in Wisconsin, and I've never even left the States, so..." Kendra trailed off.
"This guy, he's clearly incredibly dangerous, so we need you to at least let us try to protect you," I told her.
"I can put a detail on her," Joe told us.
"You didn't see this guy, Joe," Cisco told him. "No offense, but I don't think a cop is going to be able to protect her."
"No, but we do have a few friends who could lend a hand," Barry told us. "But we're going to need to leave Central City."
"And go where?" Kendra asked.
I already knew the answer.
~
Barry and I walked down the corridor toward the foyer of STAR Labs.
"You really want to go to Star City?" I asked. "You think we need Team Arrow's help?"
"Yeah, I think we do, Vera," Barry answered.
"Barry, we've fought metahumans with abilities a lot worse than knife-throwing," I told him.
We stopped walking.
"I don't think this guy's a metahuman," Barry told me. "There's something different about him, something, uh, mystical."
"Mystical?" I repeated. "Really?"
"We stop metahumans because we're scientists," Barry told me. "We can figure out what their weaknesses are, but we don't have any experience when it comes to guys like this, with magic. They do."
I nodded. "Mm, this wouldn't have anything to do with Zoom or Phoenix, would it?"
Barry shook his head. "No. I'm just trying to keep Kendra safe. This is the best way to do that."
I nodded. "Right. Okay, I'm with you. But how do we even know Oliver and them even have time to help us?"
"How busy can they be?" Barry asked.
I tilted my head at him.
~
Team Arrow was actually really busy.
Barry and I found Black Canary, Speedy and Arrow, AKA Laurel Lance, Thea and Oliver Queen, along with John Diggle, fighting Army men at a base, with a man that had a hand on Oliver's chest and seemed to be using magic to start to kill him slowly. We were both suited up as the Flash and Pyra.
I grabbed Laurel and Thea, using fire to fly away, to an alley many blocks away, letting the fire fade and backing away from them. "Hi. It's nice to work with girl superheroes now and again."
"Tell me about it," Laurel told me.
Barry zoomed closer with Oliver and John.
John vomited on the ground, looking at Barry. "Damn it. Every time."
"It's the Flash and Pyra," Thea told us. "Did I know we knew them? We know them. Okay. I didn't know that."
"Thank you," Oliver told us. "But I don't think you came all the way here to protect us."
"No, not to protect you," Barry answered. "We need to protect a friend." Barry and I exchanged a look, looking at them. "And we need your help."
~
Everyone walked into Team Arrow's new hideout, which was a lot better than it was last time.
Cisco looked around. "Wow. Nice new digs."
I looked at Oliver. "Also, I just noticed, no sleeves. Don't you get cold?"
Oliver shook his head. "I spent the better part of five years on an island in the North China Sea. I don't get cold, Vera."
Oliver walked away.
I looked at Barry. "Well, I didn't know that."
Barry smiled, chuckling.
Felicity walked toward us. "It's so good to see you."
Barry and Felicity hugged, pulling away.
Barry smiled. "Felicity."
Felicity and I hugged.
"Good to see you, Felicity," I told her.
We pulled away.
Felicity hit both Barry and me. "How come you didn't tell me Zoom broke Barry's back and Phoenix shot fire into Vera's eyes and made her go blind?"
"I..." I trailed off. "Who told you that?"
"Caitlin," Felicity answered. "Oh, I'm so glad you're both okay."
Barry looked toward Oliver. "So this is what it's like dating her?"
"More bruises from her than from Deathstroke," Oliver told us.
I smiled.
Felicity looked at Barry and me. "Speaking of dating, you two... I mean, the last time I saw you two in Central City, I set you guys up on the triple date, because the feelings were there, I saw them, but you didn't wanna do anything about it because the Reverse-Flash, but now, with Zoom and Phoenix... Are you two..." Barry smiled, taking my hand, holding them up for them to see. Felicity smiled excitedly. "Ooh, finally! I knew I saw it. Even Oliver saw it coming." She looked at Oliver. "Tell them, honey."
Oliver seemed amused, but still expressionless, looking at Barry and me. "I saw it coming."
Barry and I smiled in amusement.
Cisco and Kendra were checking out the rest of the lab.
"Okay, STAR Labs is impressive, but this is..." Kendra trailed off.
Cisco looked around the computer setup. "This is completely wrong. Did you guys even look at the specs I sent over? This is a tragedy. I'm mourning the death of engineering. Copper wiring to handle the processing speed from the Palmer Satellite, or else your system is gonna overload."
"Yeah, but that hasn't happened," Felicity told us. "I mean, it hasn't happened since last week. I mean, it didn't--It happened yesterday."
Kendra smiled. "Hi."
"I'm Felicity," Felicity told her.
"I'm Kendra Saunders," Kendra told her. "I'm Cisco's..."
Kendra didn't know how to finish, turning to look at Cisco.
"She's, uh, my, uh, new beautiful friend who kisses me occasionally," Cisco told us.
Oliver smiled in amusement.
"Right," Thea told us. "Um, I'm Thea. This is John Diggle, Laurel Lance, and my brother."
"Oliver Queen," Kendra told him. "Yeah, I know."
"Hi," Oliver told her.
"Wow," Kendra told us. "Okay, first to meet the Flash and Pyra, and now the Green Arrow and Speedy and Black Canary." She looked at Cisco. "Do you have any other surprises for me?"
Cisco chuckled nervously. "Please no more surprises."
Oliver looked at Kendra. "Barry and Vera said that you need our help. Somebody very dangerous is after you."
"Yeah, and I have no idea why," Kendra told us.
"What does this guy even look like?" Laurel asked.
"Hold on," Barry told us, walking toward a pad of paper on the table, using zooming speed to draw out what the man looked like, holding it up for us to see. "Okay, this is him."
"Yeah, see, that's something I would never think of," John told us.
Barry smiled.
"Hey, kind of rocking that Dothraki look-hot," Felicity told us, taking the pad of paper from Barry, walking toward the computer setup. "Let's see if facial recognition can find a match."
Felicity sat down, uploading the sketch of the man through the scanner, running facial recognition.
A picture of a man popped up.
"That's him," Kendra told us.
"Yeah, strange," Felicity told us. "This picture's from 1975."
"Which would make him about 80 years old right now," I told them.
"Okay, what else can you tell us?" Oliver asked.
"He said we've known each other for ages, but I've never met the man before," Kendra told us.
"There has to be some kind of connection," Oliver told us.
Kendra shook her head. "Not one I can think of. I just moved to Central City six months ago."
"Why'd you move there?" Oliver asked.
"I felt drawn to the city, I guess," Kendra answered.
"Kendra, there is a reason this guy's after you," Oliver told her. "Think."
"Look, man, we just came out here to hide out for a bit until we figure things out, so you can just take it down..." Cisco trailed off.
"You came here because you need our help," Oliver told us. "This is what my help looks like."
"Oliver, we just saved you guys from whatever the hell Flock of Seagulls was about to do," Barry told him. "The least you can do is--"
"Barry, none of us have superpowers," Oliver told him. "You brought Kendra into our world without knowing who she is or what this dude that is after her is looking for. You made all of us unsafe. So maybe you ask the questions."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa," Felicity told him. "We're all friends here, right?"
Oliver nodded. "Mm-hmm."
"Why don't we go back to our place and have some drinks, and we can talk?" Felicity asked.
I nodded. "Cool."
~
Everyone was in Oliver and Felicity's apartment loft, drinking and mingling next to the huge wall of windows.
Thea chuckled. "I am not changing my nickname. I like Speedy."
"Are you familiar with my body of work?" Cisco asked. "If you are, then you know I can come up with something so much better than Speedy."
"Why don't you get a haircut?" Thea asked. "And then maybe we can talk about it."
We all smiled.
"I think you're just mad because my conditioner game is on point," Cisco told her.
Felicity and I were talking by the wall of windows.
"So, the CEO of Palmer Technologies is living with Oliver Queen," I told her. "It's insane how much life can change in six months, huh?"
"Which you would know better than anyone, considering that there's another Pyra, another Flash, another Dr. Wells, from another... Earth, and you are finally with Barry, after so long," Felicity told me.
I smiled. "Yeah. No, it's been trippy lately."
"I wonder what Oliver's doppelganger would look like," Felicity told me. "Bald, pot-bellied."
I smiled in amusement. "Uh-huh."
Felicity tilted her head. "Agreeable."
We laughed, looking toward where Oliver and Barry were talking by the fireplace.
"Hey, Ollie, um..." Barry trailed off. "Look, I'm sorry that I laid all of this on you. I know that it wasn't fair."
Oliver sighed. "It's okay. I'm sorry if earlier I was a little..."
"Snippy?" Barry suggested.
"I have been called worse," Oliver told him. Barry chuckled. "No, but I'm glad that you're here. I'm glad you reached out. It shows a real maturity, and I would know that, because I've never been that mature." Barry laughed. Oliver smiled a small smile. "I'm always here for you."
"Thank you," Barry told him. "I got to say, this isn't the same Arrow Team I'm used to seeing, or the same Oliver Queen. You seem really..."
"Happy?" Oliver finished.
"Happy, yeah," Barry answered.
Oliver nodded. "I am happy. I finally have everything that I've ever wanted. Being with Felicity has given me a real sense of peace, something that I haven't had in a long time. But then you would know that, wouldn't you? You're seeing Vera, and you seem even more happy, than you usually are."
Barry smiled. "Yeah. Yeah, it's amazing."
Oliver and Barry looked toward Felicity and me.
Felicity and I looked away, pretending we weren't listening.
Oliver and Barry smiled.
Barry looked at Oliver. "Didn't you tell me that guys like us don't get the girl?"
"Yep," Oliver answered. "I was wrong." Barry laughed. We all gathered. "I would like to propose a toast. I wish it wasn't just the dark times bringing us together."
Barry zoomed over to stand between Oliver and me, taking Oliver's wine away to propose a toast, holding it toward Oliver. "But it is friends like you that make those dark times worth having."
I smiled.
Oliver chuckled, taking the wine from Barry. "What a guy. Steals my drinks, steals my words. As I was saying, it's good to see everyone."
I nodded. "Yes. Cheers."
Everyone raised their glass. "Cheers."
We all took a drink.
~
Barry, Cisco and I were talking over to the side.
"Look, don't worry, all right?" I asked. "We're gonna keep her safe. I promise."
"Yeah, I know," Cisco told us. "Look, there's something I never told you. The first time I kissed Kendra, I got a vibe." Barry raised his eyebrows. "No, not like that kind of vibe. Like, I vibed vibed."
Barry nodded. "Oh."
"Remember the man with wings?" Cisco asked. "It wasn't a man. It was Kendra. She was, like, a bird."
"You think that she's a metahuman?" Barry asked.
Cisco shrugged, shaking his head. "Mm."
"Wait," I told him. "Why didn't you say anything about this sooner?"
"Well, I didn't think it was related," Cisco answered. "But I guess now it has to be. Look, I don't want her to know about my powers. I have this great thing going with her. She laughs at my jokes, and she loves movies, and... I just... I've never felt like this before, and I don't want to sabotage it."
Kendra looked out of the windows, gasping, standing. "Look!"
We all followed her gaze.
The man that was after Kendra crashed through a window, landing on his feet, looking at Kendra. "I will always find you, Chay-Ara."
Barry zoomed around, giving the bows to Thea and Oliver.
Oliver aimed his bow and arrow at the man. "Don't move."
"Then how will I kill you all?" the man asked, throwing knives toward all of us.
I held my hands forward, shooting fire out through my fingertips, using the fire to curl around each blade at stop them just before they impaled us.
Barry had caught the knife thrown at him on his own with zooming speed.
I used the fire to throw the knives aside, away from the man.
Oliver shot arrows toward the man twice.
The man was able to catch them.
Oliver swung his bow toward the man. The man ducked,
Felicity, Kendra and Cisco walked toward a shelf, hiding behind it for cover.
Oliver tried to punch the man. The man backed away to make him miss, trying to stab Oliver with the arrows in his hands. Oliver ducked both times. The man tried to stab him again. Oliver raised his bow as a shield. The man kicked him in both knees, making him fall, spinning to try to kick him again. Oliver stood, backing away to make him miss.
The man threw a knife toward Barry.
Barry caught it before it could impale him. "Yeah, I can do that, too."
Oliver aimed his bow and arrow at the man, trying to shoot him. The man used a deck of knives as a shield for each one of the arrows that Oliver shot toward him.
Thea shot the man in the shoulder.
Oliver shot the man in the other shoulder.
The man backed away toward the shattered window.
Thea shot the man in the chest.
"Thea, no!" Oliver told her. The man fell over the railing on the balcony, toward the ground below. "What did you do?"
Thea turned to face us. "I ended it."
Felicity, Cisco and Kendra stood, walking toward us.
"This is why we ask questions," Oliver told us.
We walked out onto the balcony, looking toward the ground where the man should have fallen to his death.
The man wasn't there.
"Wait," I told them. "W--where did he go?"
"Oh, boy," Oliver and Barry said at the same time.
We exchanged a look.
I sighed, looking away.
~
We were back in the Arrow Lab.
Felicity was at the computer.
Oliver was on the phone. "Okay. Thanks." He hung up. "All right, Lance is gonna call if he gets any information on..." He gestured to the picture of the man on the computer. "Whoever that is."
"I know where we can get some info," Barry told us.
Barry and I looked at Cisco.
Cisco hesitantly nodded. "Kendra, I have powers. I get these vibes from people. They're visions of metahumans, and I had one of you."
"So, A, you're saying you're a metahuman, and, B, she's a metahuman?" Felicity asked.
"I don't know," Cisco told us. He looked at Kendra. "In these visions, you could fly. It was like you were a bird of some sort."
"A bird?" Kendra repeated.
"Yeah," Cisco answered.
Kendra shook her head, overwhelmed. "What else did you see?"
"That's it," Cisco answered. "Just you with wings."
"Oh, I did not see that one coming," Felicity told us.
The lights turned off. When they turned on a man in a black suit appeared in front of a group of men in black suits. "Oh, I think there's a lot you didn't see coming."
"Great," I told them sarcastically. "More surprises. Who the hell is this?"
"It's my dad," Thea answered. "Malcolm Merlyn."
~
Malcolm looked over all of us. "The man you're looking for is Vandal Savage."
"Vandal Savage?" John repeated. "Never heard of him."
"Well, who is he?" Barry asked.
"Some say he was the most trusted adviser to Genghis Khan," Malcolm told us. "Others say he guided Julius Caesar through the Gallic Wars. But one thing the League knows for sure? He was there for all of it."
"So what are you saying?" Cisco asked. "He's like a vampire or something?"
"Not a vampire, an immortal," Malcolm answered.
"Okay, we've officially stepped into crazy town," Kendra told us. "Immortality?"
"Wait," Thea told us. "No, no, no, this makes sense. This explains why he looks the same as he did in 1975."
"This can't be possible," Kendra told us.
"There's nothing you can do to save her now," Malcolm told us.
"Kendra, do not listen to him," I told her.
"I--I just need some air," Kendra told us, walking out, leaving.
Cisco looked around us, following Kendra, leaving.
I looked at Malcolm. "Hey, we're gonna do whatever we have to to keep Kendra safe, whether you think we can or not."
~
A birdman had taken Kendra.
Barry was suited up as the Flash, zooming through the streets of Starling City.
I was suited up as Pyra, using fire to fly across the skies to look for her.
Oliver was suited up at the Green Arrow, riding his motorcycle through the streets.
We could hear Felicity and Cisco back at the Arrow Lab through the suits.
"Guys, did you find anything?" I asked.
"I'm on it," Felicity and Cisco told us.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, this is my house," Felicity told him. "Don't worry. We're going to find her."
~
I was still using fire to fly, seeing Kendra and the man in the bird suit on a building rooftop. "I got them. 57th Street tower."
"I'm right near there," Oliver told us.
"She beat me to it," Felicity told us. "No one ever beats me to it. Now I feel cheated."
"Still, always a pleasure watching you work, Smoak," Cisco told her.
"Yeah," Felicity told him. "Ow."
"That was pitiful," Cisco told her.
The man in the bird suit sensed me coming, turning toward me, growing his wings, flying high in the sky.
"I got eyes on him," I told them, shooting fire toward the man as I flew closer.
The man flew higher up in the sky to make the fire shoot past him into the sky.
I flew higher, shooting the man with fire, making him fall toward the ground, flying toward him, catching him before he made impact with the ground, tossing him aside, letting the fire fade, landing on the ground.
The man suit.
"Give me the girl," I told him.
"Not gonna do that, fire girl," the man told me.
"You're making a big mistake," I told him.
"I'll take my chances," the man told me, punching toward me.
I pivoted back to make him miss, spinning to punch the man in the face.
"Barry, Oliver, change of venue," Cisco told them. "Birdman and Vera are at 54th and Motor now. Hurry."
"On my way," Barry told us.
I tried to punch the man. The man ducked, punching toward me. I turned into fire, making him punch fire instead, burning his hand. The man pulled his hand out of me, holding it in pain, groaning. I returned to human form, grabbing his shoulders, kneeing him in the stomach, kicking him back to the ground behind him.
Barry zoomed toward us.
Oliver rode closer on his bike.
The man stood, flying toward Barry, picking him up, flying him into the sky, dropping him.
Oliver shot a cord and arrow into a building nearby.
Barry caught the cord, sliding toward the ground below.
"Vera, you need to go after him and take him down," Oliver told me.
"I already did that once, and I'm pretty sure I can do it again," I told them.
"Now you're listening to me?" Oliver asked.
"It's your city, Oliver," I told him.
"All right," Barry told us.
I used fire to fly toward the man in the sky. "I can do this all night."
"Likewise," the man replied.
I shot fire toward the man repeatedly. The man flew out of the way each time to make me miss, flying away, above Barry and Oliver's heads. I flew closer, faster than before, tackling the man from the sky, toward the ground, making us both roll across the pavement, landing a few feet away from each other.
I sat up, turning to face the man.
The man started to get up.
I shot fire into his wings, burning them, but not permanently damaging them, making him fall.
Oliver and Barry walked closer, helping me stand.
I looked at them. "Told you I got this."
Barry smiled.
~
We took the man back to Arrow Lab, having him chained up.
The man struggled against the chains. "Where is she?"
"What's your name?" I asked.
"You're putting her in danger, and I'm the only one capable of saving her," the man told us.
"You have a very interesting perspective on what the word 'saving' means," Thea told him.
"She's the love of my lifetime, sweetheart," the man told her. "I was not gonna hurt her. You need to let me go." Kendra walked in. "Chay-Ara."
"My name is Kendra Saunders," Kendra told him.
"In this life," the man told her. "And I am, was Carter Hall, but that is not who we are."
"What does that mean?" Kendra asked.
"You're Priestess Chay-Ara," Carter told her. "I'm Prince Khufu. And we're lovers. Soulmates. We've been partners for 4,000 years. We're drawn to each other in each life, and after we die, we reincarnate to find each other again and again and again. And now that I've found you, we should really get out of here."
"Okay, Romeo, why don't you pump the brakes?" Cisco asked.
Carter ignored him, looking at Kendra. "These people cannot protect you from Savage any longer."
"Do you know who Vandal Savage is?" Oliver asked.
Carter sighed. "In every lifetime, he hunts us down and kills us. He's done it 206 times, and I'm not planning to make it 207."
"Why does he kill you?" John asked.
"His life force is tethered to ours," Carter answered. "Every time he kills us, he becomes more powerful. You do the math."
"You're 0 for 206, and you still think you're her best bet, hmm?" Cisco asked.
"Okay, so what we need to do is just find Savage and get rid of him," I told them.
Oliver nodded.
"Well, you can't get rid of him, my friends," Carter told us.
"Oh, yeah?" I asked. "Watch us."
Malcolm walked in with his team of other men in suits. "It might be harder than you think."
"Is that the only way this guy knows how to enter a room?" Barry asked.
Oliver sighed.
"My associates tell me Savage left Star City a few hours ago," Malcolm told us.
"For where?" John asked.
"We're not quite sure," Malcolm told us. "But I assume after his run-in with you, he realized he needed something more powerful to complete his mission. We think he's trying to locate the Staff of Horus."
"Sorry, what is that?" Thea asked.
"It's a relic from our past," Carter answered. "An ancient and powerful weapon. If Savage gets his hands on it, it's going to be nearly impossible to stop him."
"Since when did our lives suddenly become an 'Indiana Jones' movie?" Cisco asked.
"Felicity?" Oliver asked.
"Yeah?" Felicity asked.
"Think you can find it?" Oliver asked.
"Yeah," Felicity answered. "It's probably at some museum somewhere. I'll, uh, work my magic, see what I can find."
Felicity walked toward the computer setup
"We're running out of time," Carter told us. He looked at Kendra. "You need to emerge now. Come on. What is it gonna take for you to believe me? You saw my wings. I know you know this is true. Please, just let me show you how."
Kendra didn't answer.
~
Oliver, Barry, Cisco, Carter, Kendra and I were all standing on a building rooftop, none of us wearing our suits.
Kendra looked at Carter. "So, you just want me to jump?"
"Fall, jump, swan dive, whatever suits you," Carter answered. "Just, uh, do it."
"Okay, this isn't the X Games," Cisco told us.
"And this is how she emerges?" Oliver asked. "She just falls towards her death?"
"Yep," Carter answered. "4,000 years of experience says that's exactly how. Just watch and learn."
"No, I'm sorry," Barry told us. "What are we doing here? Why are we listening to this guy? Come on, Oliver, you're supposed to be the one who asks questions."
"Okay, but after what we saw, after what Cisco said, I cannot believe I'm going to say this, but it... kind of makes sense," Oliver told us.
I looked away, sighing.
Carter shrugged.
Kendra climbed up onto the ledge.
"Hey, hey, hey," Barry told her.
"I need to try," Kendra told us.
"Are you serious?" Barry asked.
"Yes, she is," Carter told us, pushing Kendra off the ledge.
Kendra screamed.
"Vera!" Cisco told me.
I used fire to fly down toward Kendra, seeing that she wasn't going to emerge, catching her before she fell to her death, flying up to the building again, putting her down, landing, letting the fire fade.
I looked at Carter incredulously. "What the hell was that?"
"Saving her life," Carter told us. He looked at Kendra. "You should have emerged. Something is blocking you. Well, we should just try again and see what's--"
"No!" Cisco told him.
"Yeah, no, no, no, no," Barry told him. "We're not doing that again. Kendra, you don't have to do this."
"Barry--" Oliver started.
"Oliver, we can stop Savage, okay?" I asked.
"Vera," Oliver told me.
"What?" I asked.
Oliver looked from Barry to me. "Talk to you for a second?"
Barry looked at Cisco, gesturing to Carter. "Keep an eye on him."
Oliver led Barry and me to the side to talk alone. "What is going on with you?"
"We're trying to keep her alive," I told him.
"Then I think we let her jump," Oliver told us.
"Are you kidding?" Barry asked.
"I get that you're desperate to help and you want to be the heroes and you want to save her, but I think she has to have a part in it, too," Oliver told us.
I scoffed, shaking my head, looking down. "It's just--the rules keep changing. One day, we have to go through time, the next we're fighting a telepathic gorilla, and now we're what? We're chasing down an immortal madman on a rampage against a reincarnated warrior priestess?"
Barry sighed. "I just never thought I'd have superpowers and feel more powerless than I have in my entire life."
I nodded, looking down.
"That part I understand," Oliver told us. "But you have already helped Kendra. You have kept her alive. So now let's help her get her wings, and then you can get back to Central City." He thought for a moment. "Central City."
"What?" I asked.
Oliver walked past us.
~
We walked into the Arrow Lab.
Oliver looked at Felicity. "You need to check Central City for the staff. Kendra, you said you were drawn there."
"Yeah," Kendra answered.
"I think you're drawn to things that destroy you the same way you two are drawn to each other," Oliver told them.
"That's why it wasn't in any museum or private collection, because it was consecrated eight months ago at St. Mark's in Central City," Felicity told us.
"We've got to get it before Savage does," I told them.
"Carter, stay here," Oliver told him.
Carter looked at Kendra. "I'm not going anywhere."
Oliver looked at Felicity. "Call Thea and Dig, and we'll have then hold down the fort in case Savage shows up."
"Kendra, last year, I lost my powers," Barry told her. "The only way I could get them back is if I just forgot about everything happening around me and focused on who I was. Just believe in yourself, and your true self will emerge."
"Thanks," Kendra told him.
Felicity looked at Oliver. "Hey, are you sure that you want to do this? If this guy's immortal and Merlyn's right about how powerful this staff is..."
"We'll be fine," I told her. I looked at Oliver, nodding to Felicity. "Kiss her."
Oliver looked at Felicity, nodding. "We'll be fine."
Oliver and Felicity kissed, pulling away.
"Careful," Felicity told us.
Oliver turned to Barry and me. "Let's go."
Oliver, Barry and I walked toward the display cases that held the Green Arrow, the Flash and Pyra's suits, exchanging a look, looking at our suits.

Back in Central City, suited up, Barry, Oliver and I walked into St. Mark's Church.
Barry sighed, looking down.
"What's going on?" Oliver asked.
"Nothing," Barry answered. "I just like to speed into rooms, usually."
"You gotta change for your audience, Barry," I told him.
"Where do you think we find this thing?" Oliver asked. "I haven't been in one of these places in a while."
We looked at a cross sword up on the alter.
"We're too late," I told them.
Savage walked toward us, holding the staff. "Something you're not too used to saying, I'd imagine." Oliver aimed his bow and arrow at Savage. "You tried those arrows once before, remember? They didn't quite finish the job, now, did they?"
"I'm not gonna make that mistake again," Oliver told him.
"You're gonna leave Kendra alone," I told him.
"I can't do that," Savage told us. "While my destiny is to live forever, Chay-Ara's is to die, as is yours now."
The staff started to glow with blue energy.
Barry grabbed Oliver, zooming him away into hiding behind the pews.
Savage shot the blue energy toward me repeatedly.
I backed away with each time he did it, using fire as a shield for every burst. I used both hands to try to shoot Savage.
Savage used the blue energy as a shield.
I backed away enough to see Barry and Oliver behind the pews on either side of me.
"Any ideas?" Oliver asked.
"Oh, now you'll listen to us?" I asked.
"It's your city," Oliver told us.
Savage tried to shoot me with the blue energy from the staff.
I used fire as a shield. "All right, just try to get the staff. I'll distract him."
"All right," Barry told us.
I shot fire toward Savage. Savage used the blue energy as a shield.
Oliver stood, walking closer to Savage, shooting arrows toward him.
Savage used the blue energy as a shield.
Barry zoomed closer to Savage.
The blue energy pushed Barry back onto the pews.
Savage tried to shoot Barry and Oliver with the blue energy.
I shot streams of fire toward Barry and Oliver, in front of them to use it as a shield against the blue energy, saving them.
Savage shot the blue energy toward me while I was saving them.
I turned to fire so it wouldn't make impact, the blue energy searing through me. The pain made me return to human form, falling to my knees, gasping in pain.
~
Oliver shot arrows toward Savage repeatedly.
Savage used the blue energy as a shield, pushing Oliver back to the floor. He started to speak in Egyptian Arabic. "In my countless years, I've never encountered anybody with your capabilities." Barry and Oliver stood on either side of me. I stood. "Astonishing." The blue energy soared and circled around the staff. It started to levitate above the floor, out of his hands. "Chay-Ara." Savage grabbed the staff. "I used to enjoy slow deaths. Now I just find them boring."
Savage slammed the staff on the floor, starting an explosion of fire and blue energy.
Blue energy and the explosion soared toward us.
Barry grabbed Oliver and me, zooming us outside of the church.
The explosions made us fall to the ground.
I pushed Barry and Oliver further away, turning into fire and making a wide arc with the fiery form as a shield to protect them from the explosion of fire and blue energy, the explosions pelting against me but unable to move me while in this form.
Once the explosions settled down, I returned to human form, kneeling on the ground, facing Barry and Oliver, breathing heavily in pain and relief.
"Thanks," Oliver told us.
Barry nodded. "Yeah." We stood, turning to face the burning church. "Any chance he blew himself up in there?"
"Not likely," Oliver answered.
"So, that's, like, a tie, right?" Barry asked.
"I guess," Oliver answered.
"I will take it," I told them.
Barry nodded.
~
We learned that Kendra had emerged, and that Cisco started calling her Hawkgirl.
Everyone over there was coming out here so that we could finish Savage once and for all.
The next day, Oliver, Barry and I were in Jitters.
Oliver looked at a menu that was advertising a coffee named 'The Flash' and super hot flavored chips called 'Pyra'. "Since when are those a thing?"
"About eight months," Barry answered. "Maybe if you save Star City, you might get one, too."
We smiled.
"By the way, we still need to get Savage," I told them.
"We'll get him," Oliver told us. A little boy bumped his way through us, dropping two action figures to the floor. "Watch yourself, buddy." The two action figures on the floor were The Flash and Pyra. Barry and I exchanged a surprised look, smiling. Oliver picked up the action figures, handing them to the little boy. "You don't want to lose these two."
"Thanks, Mister," the boy told him.
"Yeah," Oliver told him.
The boy walked away toward a woman by the door.
Oliver seemed to recognize the woman, looking from her to the boy expressionlessly.
