Chapter 6__Enter Enemies
I stood in the pipeline, suited up as Pyra, talking to Dr. Light in her cell.
"So, which one was it that sent you here to kill me and Barry?" I asked. "Phoenix... or Zoom?"
"Phoenix," Dr. Light answered. "But she's always working with Zoom. And I didn't want to kill either of you."
"But you were fine with killing Linda Park," I told her.
"It was the best bad idea I could come up with," Dr. Light told me. "Leave her body for Zoom or for Phoenix to find, they'd think I was dead, and I'd be free."
"How were they supposed to know where to find her body?" I asked.
"Just let me go," Dr. Light told me. "Let me disappear."
"You would spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder, never knowing when they would be coming," I told her.
"Okay," Dr. Light told me. "And what's your great idea?"
"How were you supposed to contact them after you killed us?" I asked.
"I was supposed to get something," Dr. Light answered. "Something I could only get if both of you were dead. And then throw it through the breach as proof."
"And then what?" I asked.
"Then they'd come for me," Dr. Light answered. "Confirm the kills and bring me home. Why do you want to know?"
"Because I want to find them," I answered.
"You really don't," Dr. Light told me.
"They're gonna keep coming for us," I told her. "They're gonna keep kidnapping people like you, forcing them to do what they want. We have to stop them before more people die."
Dr. Light shook her head. "You can't stop them."
"Yes, we can," I told her. "We will, but we need your help."
Dr. Light nodded.
~
Dressed normally, I stood up in the Cortex with the others.
"They want Dr. Light to send them your and Barry's new emblems?" Caitlin asked.
"Yes," I answered. "We need it for bait. If we can get Dr. Light to take the emblems, throw it through the breach, then they will come to collect our bodies, and we can trap them."
"You know it took a lot of work to make those emblems, right?" Cisco asked.
"This is the woman who was willing to kill Linda in order to escape," Caitlin told us. "But now she's willing to help us catch Zoom and Phoenix?"
"She knows it's the only way," I told them.
"Then you better hope that they come one at time instead of together," Cisco told us.
Harrison walked closer. "Before I left Earth 2, I worked on a serum to dampen Zoom's speed and to... put Phoenix's fire out, so to speak. All we would need is for Ramon to develop weapons to deliver them."
"Oh, great," Caitlin told us sarcastically. "Those could be this year's cold and heat guns. Maybe other criminals can get them, and then we'd have Sergeant Slow and Extinguisher."
"I would never let that happen," Cisco told us. "Those are terrible names."
"Are we forgetting how much more powerful than Barry and Vera Zoom and Phoenix seem to be?" Caitlin asked. "I mean, if Barry can catch bullets, what's to say Zoom can't catch whatever you shoot at him? And if Quinn said that Phoenix's fire is a lot stronger and a lot bigger than hers, and therefore, more powerful than Vera."
"Surprise," Harrison told us. "The element of surprise. All we would do is rig a projectile to fire as they cross into the breach. They can't stop what they can't see coming. If we get them taken care of before they even make it out of the breach, there will be no reason for a fight."
"That's great," Barry told him.
"Thanks," Harrison told us.
"Joe, voice of reason here?" Caitlin asked.
"We need a plan," Joe told us. "That's as good as any." He nodded to Harrison. "As long as he can deliver."
"Don't underestimate me, Detective," Harrison told him.
Joe's phone buzzed. He looked from the text to Barry. "Oh, Patty needs us back at the station."
Harrison walked out, leaving.
I sighed, walking toward Barry, Joe, Cisco and Caitlin.
"Are you just forgetting everything Jay and Quinn told us, and supporting Wells now?" Caitlin asked.
"Oh, no, I don't trust Wells at all," Joe told us. "I just want to see what he's up to. I figure we give him some rope, he'll hang himself."
"Yeah, I'm totally with you," Barry told him. "I think he's hiding something."
"Look, my hunch after interrogating suspects all these years, something's not right with this dude," Joe told us.
I looked at Cisco. "Can you vibe with him?"
Cisco nodded. "I can try."
"We'll see you guys later," Barry told us.
Joe and Barry walked out, leaving.
~
Cisco called up from the pipeline. "Dr. Light's gone invisible. Lock the doors. Shut the doors!"
Caitlin typed away at the computer. "The doors aren't responding. None of the security protocols are responding."
"She's hacked the system," Harrison told us.
I ran out toward the exit, seeing a blast in the door from starlight, running outside. I couldn't see her anywhere, looking around, knowing she had gotten away, sighing.
~
Everyone stood in the Cortex again.
"Dr. Light managed to hack into the lights in her cell," Cisco explained. "The whole building runs on fiber optics that operate on pulses of light, so she turned off the dampeners and used her powers."
"I told you how dangerous she was," Harrison told us. "You should have listened to me and sedated her."
"I thought I had convinced her that helping us was the only way she'd free herself," I told them.
"Well, you thought wrong," Harrison told me.
I nodded sarcastically. "Yeah, thanks."
"Okay, look, Dr. Light is gone, so instead of assigning blame, let's try to figure out what we're gonna do next," Joe told us.
"Do you think she's gonna try and take Linda again?" Caitlin asked.
"I had Iris bring Linda to the house, just in case, to keep an eye on her," Barry explained. "How are we doing with the serums?"
"I think we isolated the composites," Caitlin answered.
"And we're modifying the darts the Arrow used to take down Wells," Cisco explained.
"He's not Wells," Harrison told us. "I'm Wells."
"Whatever, Harry," Cisco told him.
"But we don't even really know if this thing works," Joe told us.
"Until we try it, no," Harrison agreed. "This will be a field test, so can we end this scintillating staff meeting and get back to work?"
"Or how about I say what everybody's thinking?" Joe asked. "Maybe it's a good thing that Dr. Light is gone." Caitlin held a hand toward Joe as if this proved her point. "Maybe it's the universe stopping us from doing something really stupid."
"No," Barry told us. "No. Keep going. I'm gonna figure out another way to get Zoom and Phoenix."
Barry walked out into the corridor, leaving.
Joe followed him.
I listened from the doorway.
"Hey, slow your roll," Joe told him. "I want to talk to you."
"Joe, look, I know what I'm doing," Barry told him.
"Okay, I don't, so why don't you clue me in?" Joe asked.
"I'm trying to stop the bad guys," Barry told him. "I thought you were on board with that."
"I'm keeping my options open," Joe told him.
"I don't understand why you think we have a choice," Barry told him. "Zoom and Phoenix want me and Vera dead. The metahumans that they're sending from Earth 2? They don't care how many innocent people get in the way. They're just collateral damage in their war. The next time, that could be you, or Iris, or Cisco, or Caitlin."
"I'm just wondering if going after them now is premature," Joe told him. "I mean, we barely know anything about their abilities."
"Wells does," Barry told him.
"You're putting a whole lot of faith in the man wearing the face of your mother's killer," Joe told him. "I think we should find Jay and Quinn, get them to help us on this."
"Yeah, they made it pretty clear that they don't want to help get me or Vera killed, and we can't just sit around and wait for Phoenix or Zoom to make their next move anymore," Barry told him. "We can't. Aren't you the one who told me life isn't about playing defense, sometimes, the only way to succeed is by working the offense?"
"I think at the time, we were talking about your high school football tryouts," Joe told him.
"You said you'd never bring that up again," Barry told him, walking away.
Joe sighed, walking back toward me. "You think you could talk to him? Maybe figure out where his head's at?"
"What?" I asked. "Why me?"
Joe gave me a look. "Vera."
I sighed. "We're not very subtle, are we?"
"No, you are not," Joe answered. "It's the kind of... ask but don't tell, but it's obvious to a cop. So, if you would please..."
"Barry's always the one that gives me the talks," I told him. "I think I can handle this one."
Joe nodded. "All right."
~
Iris and Barry came up with the idea that Linda would wear the Dr. Light suit and try to fool Zoom and Phoenix into coming here.
Iris led Linda into STAR Labs.
"I still don't understand why we're here," Linda told her. "I thought your dad said not to leave the house."
Barry and I were suited up as Flash and Pyra, walking closer.
"Ms. Park, we need your help," Barry told her.
Linda was in shock. "Whoa."
~
We were in the basement of the Labs.
There were cardboard figures of Joe, Cisco, Caitlin, Flash and Pyra set up all over as testing subjects.
Joe looked at the cardboard figure of himself, chuckling, looking up at Cisco. "Hey, this dude. How long you been sitting on this?"
"It's important to have hobbies," Cisco told him.
Joe and Cisco laughed.
Linda walked closer in the Dr. Light suit. "This is ridiculous."
"No, it's not," I told her. "You look just like Dr. Light."
Caitlin held gloves toward Linda. "And with these gloves that Cisco rigged up, you'll be able to do what she does."
"Don't worry," Iris told her. "They are totally safe."
"Ish," Harrison told us.
"Ish?" Iris repeated.
"Well, come on, it's gotta be believable, so they really do shoot light," Cisco told us. He looked at Barry and me, both of us still suited up. "And you two are going to have to let her hit you with those blasts when she gets the hang of it."
"Who exactly came up with this terrible idea?" Joe asked.
"Okay, it's not a terrible idea," Cisco told us. "Okay, Pyra obviously can absorb the blasts. Light is a lot like fire, BTW. And when I remodeled Flash's suit to protect him from fire, it will also protect him from the blasts."
"For how long?" Joe asked.
"If this was real, and if she was really trying to kill them, or just for the makebelieve part?" Cisco asked.
"What does a terrible idea look like to you, Cisco?" Joe asked.
"Okay, you know what?" Cisco asked. "I like to think I can see the bright side of things, okay? Positivity, people. All right, all right, all right."
Barry looked at Linda, making his vocal cords shake so she wouldn't recognize his voice. "So, just hit the ones of Pyra and me, okay?"
"Got it," Linda told us.
I nodded. "Great."
Linda walked forward toward the cardboard versions of us. "Dr. Light."
Linda shot carelessly at the cardboard versions of us, not able to control it yet, gasping, nearly falling back.
I helped her stand.
"Uh, you know what?" Cisco asked. "I'm just gonna adjust those a little. Screwdriver. Coming. Coming." He walked closer, adjusting the settings on the gloves, chuckling. "Just..."
I looked at Linda. "Okay, so, um, do the opposite of that, and we'll have it."
A cardboard version of Cisco flipped down.
Linda exhaled, but didn't shoot.
A cardboard version of Caitlin flipped out.
Linda breathed heavily, anxious yet exhilarated.
A cardboard version of Pyra flipped out.
Linda tried to shoot light at the version of me, but the gloves malfunctioned. "It's on fire."
I touched the flames on the gloves, absorbing them with the contact.
Linda gasped, awed that the fire was gone.
Cisco raised his hand. "My bad."
Cisco adjusted the gloves again.
Linda walked along.
A cardboard version of Caitlin flipped out.
A cardboard version of Cisco flipped down.
Linda looked around nervously.
A cardboard version of the Flash flipped up.
Linda shot light at the version of Flash, setting it aflame.
A cardboard version of Pyra flipped down, fire coming from her as if she was using fire to fly.
Linda shot light at the version of Pyra, setting it aflame. She gasped, laughing happily. "I did it! Did you see that?"
Barry smiled. "Yeah."
Linda went to give Barry and me a high five, shooting light behind us toward the platform.
"You all good?" I asked. "You okay?"
Linda winced. "Sorry."
~
We walked into the Cortex.
Barry and I were dressed normally, and Iris and Linda weren't here anymore.
"Okay, no offense to Linda, but there is no way she can pull this off," Caitlin told us.
"Well, maybe if she didn't scream every time she fired," Harrison told us.
"Yep, Linda had a rocky start, but she can pull this off," Barry told us. "I know she can. All right, did you find someplace near a breach where we don't have to worry about civilians getting in the way?"
"Yeah," Cisco answered. "There's a place by the docks that's usually deserted at night."
"Awesome," Barry told us. "How are we doing with the serums?"
"My tests indicate that they should work," Caitlin told us.
"I'll tune up Ramon's gloves, make sure they work better," Harrison told us.
"Okay, great," Barry told us.
"Hey, we're actually gonna go through with this?" I asked.
"Yeah, we're doing this," Barry answered. "I'm gonna have Iris get Linda ready."
Barry walked out into the corridor.
Joe gave me a look.
I remembered our earlier conversation. "Yeah, I'll go talk to him." I walked out into the corridor. "Barry, hey."
Barry turned to me. "Hey, what?"
"You saw what happened in there," I told him. "Linda's not ready."
Barry nodded. "She's ready." I tilted my head. Barry sighed. "She's ready enough. I know that I'm pushing this, but... I want to get them."
I sighed, nodding. "And we will. I'm just... trying to figure out where your head's at."
Barry chuckled. "God knows that's all I've been trying to do since the day I met you."
I smiled a small smile, letting it fade. "It's just... I'm starting to feel like we're still chasing the Reverse Flash."
Barry frowned. "Reverse Flash is dead."
"Yeah, but after all he did to us, we weren't the ones that stopped him," I told him. "We all worked together, but Eddie got him in the end. I mean, it just feels like... history repeating itself, even though this is so different. I just thought... this was supposed to be over." Barry nodded barely in agreement. "Look, all I'm saying is... we're asking Linda to risk her life. We better be sure of exactly why they're doing it."
~
Linda, Barry and I were out by the docks, by the breach, suited up as Dr. Light, Flash and Pyra.
"I'm here to kill Flash and Pyra, and no one can stop me," Linda told us. She whispered into her headset. "How's that?"
"Uh, it's a little too much," Cisco answered. "Uh, stop messing with the earpiece."
"Yeah, you don't want to dislodge it," Caitlin told her.
"Right, you--you told me that," Linda told them ."I'm sorry."
"No, no, you're doing great, Linda," Iris told her.
Barry zoomed closer. "All right, Dr. Light, here we are." I used fire to lower myself to the ground, letting the fire fade. "But we're gonna skip the part where you say you're gonna kill us and go right to the part where we don't let you."
"I'm here to kill you," Linda told us.
I whispered. "Wait, what are you doing?"
Linda whispered. "We're skipping that?"
I whispered. "Yes."
"Uh, I am loyal to Phoenix, and she is loyal to Zoom," Linda told us. "So get ready to fry."
Linda aimed the lights toward us.
"Next time we're doing this, I'm writing better dialogue," Cisco told us.
Caitlin and Iris spoke together. "Next time?"
Linda shot behind Barry.
Barry hesitated, not sure what to do.
I gave him a look.
"Uh..." Barry trailed off, groaning in pain, falling to the ground.
Linda smirked. "Gotcha."
"Yeah, you did," Barry told her.
"Real good," Linda told him.
"Don't think you can get me," I told her. "Let's see if you can catch me. Bring it on." Linda tried to hit me with the light blast. I used fire to fly above it, making her miss. Barry stood, zooming toward Linda, letting himself get hit by a few light blasts, falling to one knee. Linda hit him in the back with another light blast, making him fall to the ground. I pretended to be horrified. "Flash!"
Linda shot another light blast toward me. "Told you." I used fire to backflip through the air to make her miss, ending the flip facing her in time to let myself be hit in the chest and head with another light blast, falling to the ground, making the fall seem more damaging than it really had been. "Zoom and Phoenix always win."
Linda pulled the emblem off of Barry's suit, walking closer, using light to hit me again, making it seem like I was dead. She knelt next to me, taking off the emblem, whispering. "You okay?"
I left my eyes closed, whispering. "I had to make it look good."
Linda stood, walking toward the breach. "Here it is, Phoenix. I did what you wanted. Now you or Zoom can bring me home."
Linda threw the emblems into the breach.
Joe and Harrison were hiding up above with two guns with the serums, one for the speed dampener for Zoom, and the other the serum that would extinguish Phoenix's fire/flames/powers even for just a little bit.
~
We waited and waited, with me and Barry still 'dead on the ground'.
Harrison was whispering through the headsets. "Come on. Come on, come on, come on. This is everything they want, right? Come on, guys."
Barry stretched out his leg.
"Hey, stop fidgeting," Linda told him.
"Sorry," Barry told us. "It's been an hour."
"They're probably just waiting to see if you're really dead," Cisco told us. "Any minute now, they're gonna strike."
I shook my head, sitting up. "No. They would've come by now if they were."
"Sorry, I probably screwed up somehow," Linda told us.
Barry and I stood.
"No, Linda, you did great," Iris told her.
Joe and Harrison walked toward us.
Harrison knocked over a lot of things on the way over with his gun, walking away angrily.
Joe and Linda followed Harrison.
Barry and I followed more slowly.
"So, Wells ain't taking this well," Barry told me.
I shook my head. "Mm-mm."
"What about you?" Barry asked. "You landed in a ridiculous position."
"I'm good," I answered. "You?"
"Yeah, it just sucks, you know?" Barry asked. "You were right a little bit about this not being just about Zoom, about it being about the Reverse Flash."
I nodded. "Okay."
"You remember what Wells said in that video before he confessed to my mom's murder," Barry told me. "He said that even if he was dead, that he still won, because we weren't happy, and that we'd never really be happy."
I nodded barely, looking down. "I think he was right. Ever since I went back to that night, and I couldn't save them... I couldn't save my family... I just.... there's just been this void in me. You know, I just felt like that was always gonna be there."
"You felt like it was?" Barry repeated.
I nodded. "Yep."
Barry nodded. "All right. Because I also figured out... He said what he said to mess with us, to get in our heads one last time. If we listen to him, we let him win."
"I know," I told him. "That's why I said was. Because I don't want that. I want to forget about Wells. And I've just been thinking about what makes me happy, and what makes me happy..." I looked at him, smiling a small smile. "Is being with you."
Barry thought about that for a moment, and as we were passing a hidden alcove, he pulled me underneath so he could pull off his hood and take off my mask, kissing me for a long moment, pulling away. "Likewise."
I smiled a small smile. "And I guess an admission like that instantly deserves something like... that, hmm?"
Barry nodded. "Maybe more."
"I don't know," I told him, placing his hands on my waist. "The memory's getting a little foggy." I wrapped my arms around his neck. "I might need a reminder."
We smiled, continuing to kiss, hidden under the alcove.
~
Back at STAR Labs in the Cortex, the suits were in the display cases.
Cisco put new emblems on them. "There you go." He looked at Barry and me, giving us a look. "It's like you think these things just grow on trees or something. And we threw away your last ones for nothing."
Caitlin looked at Harrison. "You've been going over this footage dozens of times. Everything went exactly according to plan."
"If it had, they would have shown up," Harrison told us.
"Maybe Light was wrong," I told them. "Maybe they can't see through the breaches."
"Or maybe they finally decided to give up," Barry told us. His phone vibrated. He answered the call. "Hey. Iris, slow down. I can't understand you." Harrison's metahuman watch beeped. Barry hung up. "Phoenix has Linda."
Cisco looked at the computer. "She's outside."
~
Suited up as Pyra, I stood outside STAR Labs.
Phoenix was using fire to fly, but the fire was thriving around her, like it was alive. It was thick and strong. She was holding Linda in front of her, dangling her from the sky.
"Put her down," I told her.
"You like to fish with bait?" Phoenix asked. "I do, too."
Phoenix dropped Linda.
I used fire to fly higher, catching Linda, putting her down on the ground, but never landed. "You need to get out of here, okay?"
"No, you can't fight them," Linda told me.
"Just go," I told her.
Linda ran away, leaving.
I turned to face Phoenix.
Zoom zoomed closer, looking as if he was a demon.
Barry zoomed between me and Zoom, as Flash.
Barry and I looked from each other to Phoenix and Zoom.
~
We could hear Caitlin, Cisco and Harrison in the Cortex.
"Zoom cannot be human," Caitlin told us.
"He is," Harrison told us. "Or was."
"And the fire around Phoenix... it's like it's got a mind of its own," Cisco told us. "How the hell are they supposed to defeat them?"
I glared up at Phoenix, using fire to fly further up into the air, throwing fire toward her. Phoenix used fire to absorb the blast, making the fire surrounding her even bigger.
"Jay and Quinn were right," Caitlin told us. "You cannot do this alone."
"They're not alone," Harrison told them.
"Run, guys," Caitlin told us.
"No," Barry told us. "We need to see if Wells' serums work." He pulled out the speed-dampening serum out of his pocket, looking at Zoom and Phoenix. "What do you want from us?"
"Everything," Phoenix answered.
"You want to be us?" Barry asked. "Is that it? You want to be heroes?"
Phoenix chuckled. "Heroes die."
I pulled out the extinguishing serum from my boot. "Only if you can beat them." Barry zoomed up the side of the building. Zoom followed. Phoenix used fire to fly closer to me. I flipped up out of her way, behind her, turning to face her, trying to get close enough to inject her with the serum. Phoenix turned to face me, backing away. Barry and Zoom zoomed around the parking lot. Phoenix tried to punch me with fire. I backflipped through the air, spinning to backhand punch her with a fist of fire. Phoenix made fire explode toward me, sending me back flipping through the air, but the fire didn't do any harm to me. I struggled to gain control of flight. Harrison walked out of the building. Zoom caught Barry, slamming him onto the ground, punching him repeatedly. He hit him in the back, breaking the bones, making him fall to the ground. Harrison lined up his shot. Zoom raised his hand to phase into Barry's chest to kill him. "No!"
I flew closer from behind Zoom, shooting fire at him, throwing him away from Barry to the ground several feet away.
Zoom started to stand.
Harrison shot toward Zoom.
Zoom caught the syringe before it hit him. "Never forget, I am the fastest man alive."
Phoenix wrapped fire around me, using it to restrain me, pulling me away from Barry and Zoom.
Zoom stabbed Barry in the stomach with the serum.
"He's killing him," Caitlin told us.
I struggled within the flames. "Barry!"
"Don't worry," Phoenix told me. "You're next."
Zoom took Barry's unconscious body, zooming off, leaving.
I started to get angrier and angrier until rage was the only thing I could feel, melting into fire, slipping out of Phoenix's fiery hold, turning toward her, returning to human form while shooting more fire than I had shot before toward her, making her fall toward the ground. Phoenix turned into fire before she made impact, slipping along the concrete, growing stronger and bigger until she could explode with fire, making me fall back against a car windshield, making it shatter.
I could hear Zoom's voice through Barry's suit. "Look at the Flash. This man is no god. Pyra is no goddess. They are nothing! Their days of protecting this city are over."
I heard Joe's voice. "No, hold your fire. Put him down."
"Now, what will you do without your precious heroes?" Zoom asked.
"Shoot that thing, now," Singh told them.
I heard gunfire.
"Nice try," Zoom told them.
I pushed myself up, looking up at Phoenix, setting my arms on fire.
Phoenix smirked. "You should know... It does no good to fight me in anger. My anger outweighs yours." The writhing fire surrounding Phoenix grew even more stronger, bigger and more powerful. Her eyes started to glow with red, everything exploding toward me, burning through me, making me fall to the ground and flip back until I finally stopped. Phoenix lowered herself to the ground, the fire still going, walking closer, her eyes still glowing with fire. She took my head, lifting it up to look me in the eye, shooting the fire coming from her eyes into mine, making me scream. I heard a gun fire, felt Phoenix turn into fire in front of me before she returned to normal. "Harrison Wells, you thought you could get your win with this?"
"I made a mistake," Harrison told her.
I heard approaching, running footsteps.
I could barely see. My eyes felt like they were literally still on fire. I knew my skin would be black around them.
"Yes, a costly one," Phoenix agreed.
I heard someone zooming closer, knowing that it had to be Zoom. "Goodbye, Flash. You, too, weren't fast enough."
I heard another dart gun fire.
"Vera, I got Zoom," Cisco told me. "She has the serum."
I sensed Phoenix trying to stab me with the serum, unable to see, but able to catch her wrist, turning it on herself to stab her.
I heard the fire surrounding Phoenix finally fade into nothing. I heard her scream in pain and fall to her knees.
I heard someone zooming away, feeling my way in front of me, noticing that Phoenix was gone, knowing that Zoom and Phoenix were gone.
Harrison sounded very angry. "No. No!"
I could hear Cisco right in front of me. "Oh, my God. Vera?"
I could hear Caitlin. "Stay with me. Stay with me, Barry."
~
We were inside, in the infirmary lab.
Barry was lying on one of the beds, unconscious.
I sat on the other bed, feeling my eyes, knowing they were still burned, but unable to see anything.
Cisco was applying something to my eyes.
Joe was here, very angry with Harrison. "This is all you! If Barry dies, you die."
"Joe, Barry's vitals have stabilized," Caitlin told him. "Let's let him go."
"No, Caitlin," Joe told her.
"Why?" Caitlin asked. "What good does that do for Barry or Vera?"
"It's gonna help me," Joe told us.
"Joe, stop," Cisco told him. "Who's Jesse?"
"How do--" Harrison started. "Jesse's my daughter. Zoom and Phoenix have her. You've--you did vibe me."
"Yes," Cisco answered.
"What did you see?" Harrison asked.
"I saw your daughter," Cisco answered. "She was with Phoenix."
"But she's alive?" Harrison asked.
"Yeah," Cisco answered.
Harrison sighed.
"Zoom sent you here like the others?" Joe asked. "You kill the Flash and Pyra, and you get your daughter back?"
"The only way I get my daughter back is I capture the ones who have her," Harrison told him. "Do you understand? You love Barry. You've looked out for Vera. I love my daughter. And none of these children are safe as long as Phoenix and Zoom are here. I tried on my Earth to capture them. I failed. Vera, I thought I could bring them down here with your and Barry's help. I was wrong."
I heard someone walk away, leaving.
I lowered my head in pain, shamed.
~
The next morning, I was sitting at Barry's bedside, holding his hand, still unable to see, feeling him start to stir. "Barry. Barry? Can you hear me?"
"Hey," Barry told me.
I chuckled. "You scared the hell out of me. You were gone for a long time."
"Oh, my God," Barry told me. "Your eyes."
"It's not that bad," I told him. I hesitated. "Okay, it's bad. For both of us. If we didn't heal so quickly, you'd be dead, and I'd be blind. I can't see anything, Barry. But I know that I'll heal enough to be able to see soon."
"What about..." Barry trailed off.
"Let--let's worry about them when we're healed, okay" I asked. "Neither of us are in fighting shape right now. Barry?"
"Vera, I can't feel my legs," Barry told me. "I can't feel my legs."
I sighed worriedly, not knowing what to do.
