Chapter 18__World's Finest

Barry and I were still training, trying to get better in any way that we could to defeat Zoom and Phoenix, Jay and Natalia.

We broke through a barrier of some kind, suited up as Pyra and the Flash, in the middle of tbe street.

I saw a girl falling from a skyscraper, using fire to fly closer, catching her, flying away.

Barry followed.

We made it to a field.

The girl's shirt was on fire from accidental contact with the fire that I had used to fly.

Barry stopped next to us. "You're on fire." He looked at me. "You set her on fire."

I winced in regret. "I didn't mean to."

I drew the fire back into my hands, absorbing it.

"You don't seem that bothered by the fact that you were on fire," Barry told her.

"I didn't  need you to save me," the girl  told us.

I chuckled. "You just fell from a skyscraper. So if we hadn't been there, you would have gone splat."

"I have to get back to the city," the girl told us.

"Okay," I told her.

The girl started to fly away. Her everyday clothes fell off to reveal a blue and red superhero suit with a cape.

Barry and I were in shock, confused.

"What the..." Barry trailed off. "What... that's a new one. I thought we were the impossible."

I tilted my head, shrugging, using fire to fly away. Barry followed at zooming speed.

The girl looked back at us, confused, flying toward us, making us stop.

The girl and I both landed on the ground.

I let the fire fade. "How did you do that?"

"I'm Supergirl," the girl answered.

"You're who now?" I asked.

"Sorry, I was just a little disoriented from the scream," Supergirl told me. "How did you save me?"

"Well, I..." I trailed off in confusion. "You fell out of a window, and I caught you and flew you all the way out here. Which I did not mean to do."

"Yes, I know, but I..." Supergirl trailed off in confusion. "What is with the fire? Who are you two?"

"I'm the Flash," Barry answered. "This is Pyra."

"The who now?" Supergirl asked.

"Wait, do you not know who we are?" I asked.

"Should I?" Supergirl asked.

"What about the Green Arrow?" Barry  asked. Supergirl shook her head. "Black Canary? Firestorm? Atom? Zoom? Phoenix?"

"Sorry," Supergirl told us.

I realized what was happening, sighing. "Oh, boy. Not as sorry as I am." I looked at Barry. "We broke through a barrier, a breech, into another world. Another Earth."

Barry sighed, taking off his mask. "Oh, man."

I gave him a look. "Hey."

"What?" Barry asked. I nodded to Supergirl, giving Barry a look for taking off his mask. "Vera, if we're on the wrong Earth, we're gonna need help to get back, and she seems very capable of helping us, but first, there's got to be trust." I sighed, looking down. Barry looked at Supergirl. "Hey. I'm Barry Allen. I'm the fastest man alive. This is Vera Mitchell. She is literally fire. And if she's right, we're  gonna need your help to get back to our world."

~

Supergirl, Kara Danvers, took us to her apartment where we could change into normal clothes. "So, what do you mean, you're from another Earth? How many other Earths are there? Other than this one? You  know, we're Earth."

I sat at the computer, searching the Internet. "I don't understand. What... you guys have Central City, but you don't have STAR Labs, no Cisco Ramon, no Caitlin Snow, no Harrison Wells. Nobody who's gonna be able to help us get back home."

I stood, walking toward Barry.

Two men walked inside.

Man 1 looked at Kara. "Hey. Are you all right?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," Kara answered. "What happened  to Siobhan?"

"Oh, well, after she went all Mariah Carey on you, she just split," Man 1 answered.

"Oh, so we all have Mariah Carey," Barry told us. "That's something."

"Who are you two?" Man 2 asked.

"Oh, sorry," Barry told them. "I'm Barry Allen. This is Vera Mitchell."

"James Olsen," Man 2 told us.

"And this is Winn," Kara told us, pointing to Man 1. "Uh, you guys... I'm  not quite sure how to tell you this. Well, I do know how to tell you, I just..."

James cleared his throat. "Kara?"

"Yeah, right, sorry," Kara told them. "Uh, Barry and Vera are from another universe."

Winn smiled. "Cool." He laughed. "Whoa. So the--the theory of the multiverse, that's true?"

I nodded. "It is true."

"Oh, yeah," Barry agreed. "Big time."

"Yeah, I still can't believe it," Kara told us. "And I'm from another planet."

"What?" I asked.

"Oh, yeah, she's an alien," Winn told us.

"You're  an alien?" I asked.

"Yeah," Kara answered.

"So, do you have, like, other  aliens on this Earth?" I asked.

"What do you mean by 'this Earth'?" James asked.

"Uh, hold on," Barry told us. He walked toward the white board, drawing the same thing that Professor Stein has drawn for us on our Earth to get us to understand. "All right, so imagine there are multiple versions of Earth. Um, one where the Nazis won World War II. One where Kennedy was never assassinated."

"Oh, yeah, one where we're all evil," Winn told us.

"Been there," I told them. "It sucks."

"So, all of these Earths occupy the same place in space, but they vibrate at a different frequency so they can't see one another," Barry told us.

"Yeah, but if you can go fast enough, then it's  possible to open a breach and travel between worlds," I told them. "That's  what we were doing. We were testing how fast we could go with our speed combined. Last time we combined our speed, we time traveled."

"But how can you do any of that?" James asked.

Barry chuckled. "Uh, well, um..."

Barry zoomed out of the apartment, coming back with ice cream for all of us.

Kara smiled. "Yes!"

I showed them fire flickering from my fingers. "Yeah, so, um... Barry  was struck by lightning the same night a particle accelerator exploded, during which time I was burning alive. Which gave Barry the speed of lightning and me the ability to turn into fire, and manipulate it."

James stammered a bit. "So you're both superheroes, too?"

"Mm-hmm," Barry answered.

"That's cool, I guess," James told us.

Winn raised his hand. "Okay, so you can just, like, just bop back and forth between universes?"

"Uh, no actually," Barry answered. "This happened by accident. We have traveled through time by accident."

"That's cool," Winn told us.

"But we've never jumped parallel dimensions without meaning to," I told them. "So, until we figure this out, we're stuck here."

"Well, don't worry," Kara told us. "Don't worry at all, because we're gonna help you."

Winn put a hand on my shoulder, taking it off in surprise. "Jeez, you're hot." Kara and James gave him a look. "No, I mean that literally." Barry and I exchanged a knowing, amused look. "Like, her skin is like fire."

I nodded. "Yeah. First things first, food. I have to consume about 10,000 calories a day, because my system burns through it all so fast, and if I don't, I start passing out."

James pointed at Kara. "Oh, yeah. You've definitely met the right girl."

Kara smiled. "Do you like donuts?"

"Who doesn't like donuts?" I asked.

"I know a place," Kara told me.

"All right," I told her. I looked at Barry. "I'll be with Kara. You get to hang out with the boys."

"All right," Barry told me.

We smiled, parting ways.

~

Kara and I walked through her reporter office.

"There's just one more thing I got to get," Kara told me.

A woman called to her from her office. "Kara, you're  alive."

"Ms. Grant, don't worry, I was rescued," Kara told her.

"Stop stating the obvious," Grant told her. "You're  in the middle of breaking news, and I want you to act like it. And yes, yes, another one if my ex-ployees went all revengy. But..." She turned her computer to face us. Winn, James and Barry walked in from behind us. We looked at the picture of me, as Pyra, catching Kara from  fall, and Barry, as Flash, zooming closer. "There's two new superheroes in in National City. This is huge. Direct competition for Supergirl."

"They don't have to be competition," Kara told her.

"Would you prefer sidekicks?" Grant asked.

"No, not sidekicks," Barry told her. "More like equals. Or allies. Partners, maybe." Grant looked from Barry to me. I gave Barry a look. Barry nodded. "Speaking was the wrong choice. I see that now."

"All five of you standing there, doing nothing, you look like the attractive yet non-threatening racially diverse cast of a CW show," Grant told us. "Who are you?"

"My cousins," Winn, James and Kara all told her at the same time.

"No, my name's Barry Allen," Barry told her. "This is my girlfriend, Vera Mitchell. We're not actually anybody's cousins." He looked at me in confusion, curious. "You don't  have a cousin, do you?"

"No, I don't," I answered. "Uh, we're just such good friends."

"Yeah, it feels like we're family sometimes," Kara told her.

Grant gave us an unconvinced look. "Uh-huh. Well, I need a clear picture of this speedster and blaze. James, that's on you. And, Kara, there are a lot of people  who want to know what happened. Speak to no one. You're mine. I will let you know when you should reveal this exclusive information. Now, I have to name these heroes. For the speedster, I was thinking about 'The Whoosh' or 'The Red Streak' or 'The Blur'. For the blaze, I was thinking 'Blaze' or 'Inferno' or 'The Flame'."

"What about the Flash and Pyra?" Barry asked. "You know, Pyra is close to pyro, and you change the o to an a for the girl." I gave him a look."I'm just saying, they're pretty cool superhero names, right?"

"The Flash and Pyra?" Grant asked. "Sounds like someone whose only superpowers are jumping out of an alley in a trench coat. No. I want mystery, I want intrigue. I want the Blur and the Blaze. Now, be gone."

We nodded, walking out, leaving.

I used the back of my hand to hit Barry on the chest, making him cringe. "We seriously need to work on your secret-keeping skills."

"I know," Barry told me sheepishly.

Winn and Kara smiled, while James smirked, in amusement.

~

Barry, James, Winn and I were in Kara's apartment while she was still at work.

Kara walked in. "I need your help."

"Anything you need," James told her.

"Yeah, of course," Winn told her.

"I was actually talking to Barry and Vera," Kara told them.

Barry and I stood.

"Yeah," Barry told her.

"Yeah, what can we do?" I asked.

"Well, I have this villain," Kara told us. "Her name is Livewire. And she's basically, like, living electricity."

"Cool," Barry told us. "We have a rogue like that. We call him Blackout. Doesn't feel relevant all of a sudden."

"Right, so she just broke out of this prison, and all she wants out of life is to kill Ms. Grant," Kara told us. "And with Siobhan still out there, I don't think I can protect her by myself."

"Okay," I told her.

"National City needs the Flash and Pyra," Kara told us.

"Actually, if you want an easier and faster way to say that, just say Flyra," Barry told them. "People back home call us that all the time."

I sighed. "Oh, Barry, come on."

Barry chuckled.

"And once they're both back in custody, I promise we will do everything in our power to get you back home," Kara told us. "What do you say, Flyra? Partners?"

Barry and I smiled small smiles, shaking Kara's hands. "Partners."

~

Barry was suited up as the Flash. I was suited up as Pyra. Kara was suited up as Supergirl.

We walked into a base of operations.

"Yo, this place is amazing, all right?" Barry asked.

Kara and Winn laughed.

"Is this a spaceship?" I asked.

"That's actually my spaceship," Kara answered.

"I love this Earth," Barry told us. "Hey, Winn, can I get a picture with this bad boy?"

"Oh, yeah, sure," Winn answered.

"Awesome," Barry told us, making  a pose by the ship.

"Winn," Kara told him. "Winn."

Winn pulled out his phone, sighing. "That's probably not a good idea, dude. All right?"

A group of people  walked toward us.

"Agreed," a woman told us. The men around her aimed guns at Barry and me. "Who are these two? Aliens?"

"Metahumans," I answered.

"Well, we have protocol for visitors at the DEO, Supergirl," the woman told her.

"Guys, it's fine," Kara told them. "They're here to help us find Livewire."

"We do need all the help we can get," the woman told us. The men lowered their guns. "So, what do I call you? Speedy? Flame?"

Barry took off his mask. "Barry Allen."

I sighed, taking off my mask. "Vera Mitchell."

"Lucy Lane," the woman told us. "I hope you're bringing more to the table than just quick reflexes and foreworks."

"As it just so happens, catching criminals is both our night and day jobs," I told them. "Barry's a CSI. I'm a fire department fire expert."

"By the way, do you guys have a crime lab here?" Barry asked.

"Yeah," Kara answered. "My sister's lab is right over here."

"Wait, you have a sister?" I asked. "Where is she?"

"I wish I knew," Kara told us.

We walked toward her sister Alex's lab.

~

We were in Alex's lab with Winn, researching, talking about Leslie Willis, AKA Livewire, and Siobhan Smythe, the girl that had tried to kill Kara with a scream that propelled her out of the window that I had caught her falling out of.

I saw Kara looking outside the nearby window, following her gaze to James. They looked at each other before lookimy away. I knew that they liked each other because that was the way that Barry and I had used to react around each other before we actually got together. I smirked knowingly, looking away. "We found Livewire."

Lucy and James walked in.

"That's great news," James told us.

"Actually, it was Flyra here," Winn told them.

"Of course it was," James told us.

"Livewire's ability to absorb electrical energy in the air surrounding her is a lot like my ability to absorb the fire around me," I told them. "So, it gave me an idea. I wrote an algorithm to monitor variations in meter usage around the city, and it all leads to that warehouse."

"I see bad guys love their abandoned warehouses on your Earth, too, huh?" Barry asked.

"I'll authorize a drop team," Lucy told us.

"No, no, no," Kara told her. "She's too dangerous." She looked at Barry and me. "Let's go."

"All right, yeah," Barry told us. "What's the plan?"

"Catch the bad girl, bring her back here so she can't hurt anyone," Kara told us. "85% chance of punching."

"Okay, that I get," Barry told us. "But like, what's the plan? Maybe we can overload her somehow."

"Yeah, what about the Industrial Capacitor you were gonna trap her in last time?" Winn asked.

"No, no, it went busto," Kara told us.

"Well, Dynamic Duo will buold you a new one," Winn told her, holding his hand toward Barry.

Barry high fived him.

"No, if we wait, we lose her," Kara told us. "If we lose her,  God knows what kind of damage she could do, or who she could hurt. I defeated her once before. I can do it again. With your help."

I looked at Barry and Winn. "I'll go with Supergirl. You two stay here and work on the Industrial Capacitor thing."

Barry nodded. "See? Delegating. I feel better."

I  smiled a small smile, shaking my head.

Kara and I walked out, leaving.

~

Kara and I were flying through the sky. I was, of course, using fire to fly.

We got to the warehouse.

"For the record, I got here first," Kara told me.

"Yeah, for the record, I went around the block to check the perimeter," I told her. "So, technically, I let you get here first."

Kara chuckled. "You sure this is the right place?"

"Hope so," I told her.

Electricity started to form out of the lights, forming into Leslie Willis/Livewire. "Long time, cape and skirt. Didn't think you could fight me solo, so you brought a partner? How sweet."

I threw fire into Livewire.

Livewire threw electricity into me, dangling me over the ground.

Kara watched worriedly. "Pyra!"

I threw fire into Livewire to make her stop, making her fall to the floor, lowering myself to the floor. Electricity was still buzzing around the flames that surrounded me.

Kara saw a water sprinkler from above, about to use heat vision against it to douse us all in water.

That was when we heard a scream so piercing and painful that we had to hold our hands to our ears.

Livewire stood. "I brought a friend, too." I looked at the blood on my fingers from the scream. "Meet Silver Banshee."

Silver Banshee was Siobhan, walking closer. "All my life, I thought I was cursed. But now I see I'm cursed for the better."

Siobhan jumped down in front of us.

"You don't have to do this," Kara told her. "I wanna help you."

"Funny, she said the same thing to me once," Livewire told her.

"Here's what I say to that," Siobhan told us, using her scream to propel Kara into a wall, making her fall. "Once you two are dead, I can finally give that little blonde moppet, Kara Danvers, the death she deserves."

"Maybe Kara Danvers is tougher than you think," Kara told them.

I threw fire into both Siobhan and Livewire, making them fall. "We're not gonna win this today."

Siobhan used her scream to push Kara back.

Livewire shot electricity into me to make me stop using fire against them.

Kara and I flew out, leaving.

~

Kara and I went to her work building, wearing normal clothes, standing on a balcony.

"Hey," I told her. "How are you doing?"

"Well, aside from my eardrums ringing like church bells, I'm fine," Kara told me.

"You sure?" I asked. "You don't seem okay."

"I'm sorry I made you rush in on Livewire without a plan," Kara told me. "I didn't know she was gonna have a cohort."

"That's the thing about being a superhero," I told her. "You have to somehow be prepared for the unexpected."

"Something happened to me a few weeks ago," Kara told me. "I was exposed to this substance that made me crazy. I did a lot of horrible things."

"That's rough," I told her.

"And when I was helping people as Supergirl, I was... I was so happy," Kara told me. "And now that the people don't want me to help them, I feel lost. And I'm in such a hurry to prove myself again, I'm making stupid mistakes. Like today."

"You need to slow down," I told her. "Just keep doing your good work. Don't worry about the rest. The public will forgive you, I promise."

"How can you be so sure?" Kara asked.

"'Cause the same thing happened to Barry," I answered. "A speedster pretended to be him to terrorize the public, and everyone was convinced that he did it."

"Really?" Kara asked.

"Mm-hmm," I answered. "And the public thought that an evil blaze named Phoenix was me, so, yeah, it happened to me, too."

"What finally fixed things?" Kara asked.

"Time," I answered. Kara sighed. "When you're used to fixing things with brute strength, or in my case, fire powers, it's hard to accept that there are things out of our control. It's humbling, right?"

"Yep," Kara answered.

"And believe me, when you stop trying to force a solution, it'll happen on its own," I told her.

"I'm really sorry you're locked out of your world," Kara told me. "But I'm really glad that you're here."

I nodded. "Me, too. And I was thinking, maybe Barry and I can repeat what we did to get here to get back home."

"Can you do that?" Kara asked.

"The steps, yeah," I answered. "Getting the speed and everything just right is a little more tricky."

Kara nodded in understanding.

~

Kara, Barry and I were at the DEO, suited up.

"So, back on our Earth, we fought a villain who used sound waves as a weapon, and he called himself Pied Piper," Barry explained.

"That's a cool name," Kara told us.

"Yeah," Barry agreed. "So, I whipped up these bad boys." He picked up three sets of ear buds. "Sorry I keep saying, 'bad boys'."

I smiled. "They're earbuds."

"Yeah," Barry agreed. "It'll protect us from Silver Banshee's yelly voice."

Lucy walked toward us. "James just called. Livewire and Silver Banshee just kidnapped Cat Grant."

Livewire appeared over the TV screens. "Hello, red and blue, orange and black. Come to National City Park now if you don't want Cat's blood all over your hands. Or all over the street."

Livewire laughed maniacally.

Kara looked at Barry and me. "You don't have to do this. This is my fight."

"One for all and all for..." Barry trailed off. "You guys have The Three Musketeers here, right?"

"All for one," I told them.

Barry nodded.

Barry and I put on our masks.

Barry zoomed out. Kara flew out. I used fire to fly out. We all kept up with each other on the way there.

~

People in the park were running.

We got to where Livewire and Siobhan had Cat Grant sitting on a bench.

"Hey, Sparky," Barry told her. "Shrieky." They looked at us. Barry waved. "Hi. What do we say, we step away from the nice lady? Settle this like women." I looked at Barry curiously. "What? There's  more of you guys than there are of me."

I smirked in amusement, shaking my head, rolling my eyes.

Livewire looked at Siobhan. "Kill them all."

Siobhan walked closer, screaming.

The earbuds that Barry had made for us worked in protecting us, though there was still a little pain at the screech.

Everyone in the park had to cover their ears in pain.

"Told you it'd work," Barry told us.

I looked at Siobhan. "What, did you lose your voice?"

Siobhan looked at Livewire. "What are you waiting for?"

"Watch who you yell at," Livewire told her, shooting electricity toward Barry, Kara and me.

I used fire as a shield to protect the three of us, pushing the fire forward against Livewire and Siobhan, making them fall to the ground.

Livewire turned into electricity, going through a power pole and through a building.

Barry zoomed up the building after her.

Kara walked toward Grant.

"What took you so long?" Grant asked.

"Are you kidding?" Kara asked, using her super strength to break the handcuffs chaining Grant to the bench.

I punched Siobhan in tbe face, making her fall.

Up on the rooftop, Barry zoomed toward Livewire, when she turned into electricity to make him pass through her, turning to face him, shooting electricity toward him, making him fall unconscious, smirking. "Zap."

Siobhan sent a screaming sound wave toward me, and though it didn't hurt me like it did before, the sound waves through me to the ground. She walked closer.

Kara punched into the ground to pick up a piece of cement, throwing it toward Siobhan.

Siobhan screamed loudly, decimating the block of cement before it could touch her.

Livewire traveled through the power lines to stand next to Siobhan.

I stood, backing away toward Kara.

A helicopter flew above us.

"I hat helicopters," Livewire told us, shooting electricity toward the helicopter.

Kara flew in the way of the helicopter, receiving the electricity in the chest.

Everyone in the park was watching.

I shot fire into Livewire to make her stop using electricity, making her fall.

Kara fell to the ground.

Livewire shot electricity at me, making me fall to the ground. I used fire as a shield against her so she didn't use electricity against me anymore.

Siobhan walked toward Kara.

The crowd walked closer, standing in the way.

"She saved that helicopter," a woman told us.

"She saved us," a man told us. "She saved us all."

A woman looked at Siobhan. "Leave her alone."

"Yesterday, you people were ready to string her up," Siobhan told them. "Now you're willing to die for her?"

"She was willing to die for us," the woman told us.

"What do you say we thin the herd?" Livewire asked.

I used fire to shoot Livewire down, making her fall.

Siobhan walked toward the crowd, preparing to scream.

I used fire to shoot Siobhan, making her fall.

The crowd cheered and applauded.

I walked toward Kara worriedly. "Supergirl."

Kara took my offered hand, letting me help her up.

Barry had woke up from being knocked unconscious by Livewire, zooming down toward us. "What did I miss?"

I chuckled.

~

Kara came to see me and Barry in the field where we had arrived to this Earth, to see us off.

"You really think this is gonna work?" Kara asked.

"Well, it did before to get us here," Barry answered. "We joined forces. Literally. We combined Vera's speed with my speed. She used fire to throw me ahead, and then I pulled her with me. If we do that again at our fastest, at a constant, same speed as each other, then we just might break the dimensional barrier and get back home."

"What?" Kara asked. "What do you mean? Like a race?"

"Yeah, we were racing," I answered. "Uh, training would be the more accurate word." Kara laughed. "What, Girl of Steel not up to training?"

"Oh, you have no idea, Flyra," Kara told us.

We laughed.

"All right," Barry told us.

"I'm gonna miss you, Barry Allen and Vera Mitchell," Kara told us.

"We're really gonna miss you, too, Kara Danvers," I told her. "Or Kara Zor-el, which is your alien name, because you're an alien. Which we both think is very cool."

Barry laughed. "Yeah."

"I think James Olsen thinks so, too," I told her.

"What makes you say that?" Kara asked.

"You remember before when I told you to take things slow?" I asked. "That's good advice for being a superhero. Lousy advice for two people who really like each other."

"Yeah, we would know," Barry told her.

I smiled. "Yeah." Barry and I looked at each other, smiling. Kara smiled. I looked at Kara. "Maybe it's time to speed things up."

Kara nodded. "Maybe." She smiled, spreading her arms. "Come here."

Kara hugged both me and Barry. We pulled away.

"All right," Barry told me. "Let's do this."

Barry and I pulled on our masks.

Kara stood in front of us like a race girl. "On your marks... get set... go!"

Barry and I went off. Barry zoomed forward at the same speed that I used fire to fly forward. I was right behind him, a little bit above, using fire to push us forward even faster. Barry pulled me with him through a breakthrough in the dimensional barrier.

We were going home.
