Chapter 15__Escape From Earth-2
Barry and I were still trapped in the glass cages, next to each other, wearing our suits without our masks on.
The man in the metallic mask was still tapping against the glass wall of his cell.
I looked at the girl in the cage nearby. "Jessie? I'm Vera. This is Barry. We're here with your dad. We're gonna get you out of here. I promise."
Barry was trying to feel his way out of his cell. I was trying to burn my way out of my cell, but the glass repelled the flame.
"You're wasting your time," Jessie told us. "I used to think I could escape, too, when I first got here. But there's no way out."
I looked at the man in the metallic mask. "Who is that?"
"I don't know," Jessie told us. "He's been here since Zoom and Phoenix brought me to this place." The man knocked on his cell. "Look, stop, okay? Just please stop."
"I think he might be trying to help us," Barry told us.
"Nothing is going to help us," Jessie told us.
"That's not true," Barry told her. "We're gonna get out of here. Your dad's gonna find us. I promise."
"You sure have a lot of faith in a man who only cares about himself," Jessie told us.
I chuckled barely. "You know, I actually thought that at first, too. But it's not true. Every decision that he's made, every action he's taken since we've met, it's been to save you."
"Your dad hasn't given up on you, Jessie," Barry told her. "Don't give up on him."
Phoenix used fire to fly inside, scaring Jessie, making her gasp. "Believe what you want, but the only reason that you're still alive is so I can kill you in front of your father. Zoom is out there, looking for him right now."
"Why do you need us, then, huh?" I asked. "You took Jay and Quinn's power by burning them. You used fire to siphon their power out of them. Why haven't you done that to us?"
Phoenix walked closer. "Because I want Quinn Tate to watch as I burn her friends alive."
"Why?" Barry asked. "Why do you hate Quinn so much?"
"No concern for dead heroes walking," Phoenix told us, walking away.
Barry and I watched her go, glaring after her.
~
We were all sitting down.
The masked man was tapping again.
"That's not Morse code," Barry told us. "I know he's trying to tell us something. We just have to find the pattern."
"There's no pattern," Jessie told us.
"You know, your dad, who I'm pretty sure is one of the smartest people to live on either of our Earths, told us the only person smarter than him, was you," Barry told her.
"He said that?" Jessie asked.
I nodded.
"If that's true, we work together, I know we can figure this out," Barry told us.
"Worth a shot," I told them. We listened to the tapping. "He never goes past five."
"What?" Jessie asked.
I stood. "He never goes past five knocks without pausing, right? Listen."
Barry stood. "Yeah, you're right."
"I think I know what this is," I told them. "It's a five-by-five tap code used by POWs."
"That would only get us to 25 letters, and there's 26 in the alphabet," Jessie told us.
"No, not if you combine C and K," Barry told us. "They sound the same. Let's try it out."
"Worth a shot," Jessie told us.
I chuckled. "All right."
The masked man continued to knock.
~
The masked man continued to tap.
"Two down, five across," Barry told us.
"It's J," I told them.
"J?" Jessie repeated.
The masked man nodded.
"That's what you're tapping?" Barry asked. "The letter J?" The masked man nodded. "All right, what's next?"
The masked man tapped twice.
"A," I told them. The masked man nodded. "All right."
The masked man continued to tap.
"Five down, four across," Jessie told us.
"Y," I told them.
"J-A-Y?" Barry asked. "You're spelling 'Jay'. As in Jay Garrick?" The masked man nodded. "He's alive, but he's on our Earth, with Quinn Tate."
The masked man seemed frustrated, shaking his head, hitting his head against his glass cell wall.
"Hey, hey," I told him. "Stop. Stop. Look, I'm sorry. I don't know what you mean. Jay and Quinn didn't come with us."
"Look, just keep tapping, please," Jessie told him. "We don't understand."
"Please," Barry told him.
Phoenix walked in, standing in front of the masked man's cell, placing her burning hands on the glass. "Don't talk to them again." She sent the fire from her hands through the glass to burn the masked man, making him scream in pain. "You can understand that perfectly, can't you?"
I slammed my hands against the glass wall of my cell angrily. "Stop. Stop it!"
Phoenix stopped torturing the masked man, turning to face me in my cell. "Quite the heroine, aren't you, Pyra?"
Phoenix sent her fire through the glass wall of my cell to surround me.
I formed fire on my arms to use it as a shield.
The flames from Phoenix burned through my fire shield, wrapping around me, burning me.
Like before, the flames from Phoenix could actually hurt me to the point of agony. I could feel the flames siphoning my power excruciatingly, screaming in pain.
Barry slammed his hands against the glass wall of his cell worriedly. "Enough! I'm gonna get out of here. And I'm going to destroy you."
"All I need from you is your power, Vera," Phoenix told me. "And you only need to be barely alive for me to get it."
Phoenix continued to burn me.
"Stop!" Barry told her. I tried to fight back with fire, but my flames couldn't breach through the glass. I was growing weaker because Phoenix was still using her fire to take my power. "Stop!" Phoenix stopped burning me, letting the fire flicker across her body. She turned completely into a literal flying flame, soaring out of the lair. I fell to the floor, breathing heavily in agony. Barry looked at me worriedly. "Vera? Vera, are you okay?"
I nodded weakly, unconvincingly. "Yeah. I'm okay."
Barry knelt on the other side of the glass wall from me to sit next to me, but divided, looking at me worriedly. "I'm gonna get us out of here. I promise."
I leaned against the wall weakly for support, nodding, breathing heavily, placing my hand on the glass.
Barry placed his hand over the glass on the other side next to mine.
~
Barry was trying to phase his way out of his cage. He kept slamming into the glass wall instead. "God!"
"Look, are you sure you want to keep doing that?" Jessie asked. "You know, if they catch you, they're gonna hurt you like they hurt Vera."
"I don't understand why I can't phase through this," Barry admitted.
"Well, your body would need to have the same resonance as the glass walls," Jessie told him.
"I should be going more than fast enough," Barry told us. "It's something else."
"Maybe you're resonating at a different frequency?" Jessie suggested.
"Yeah, your Earth vibrates at a different frequency than ours," Barry told her.
"Same reasons Cisco can't vibe," I told them weakly.
"Is there any way to make up the difference?" Jessie asked.
"Only if I can go faster," Barry told us, backing away from the wall to try again.
I watched him weakly from where I was still healing.
~
Barry was sitting on the other side of the glass wall as me again.
Cisco, Harrison, Iris 2 and Barry 2 walked in.
"Barry?" Cisco asked. "Vera."
Barry stood. "Hey, Cisco."
"Guys, we made it," Cisco told us.
"How did you find this place?" I asked.
"Had some help," Cisco answered. Killer Frost walked in. Cisco gestured to Barry 2. "Don't even get me started on this guy." He looked at my burns worriedly. "What happened to you?"
"Phoenix," I answered. "She literally siphoned some of my power away. But I still got my powers."
Cisco sighed in relief. "Oh. Good."
Harrison walked toward Jessie. They looked at each other in relief through the bars of her cell.
"Stand back," Harrison told her, opening her cage. They embraced in relief, crying silently. Cisco, Barry and I looked at each other, smiling small smiles. "I'm here. I'm here." They pulled away. "Come on. Let's get you out of here. Okay." Harrison noticed a chain attached to Jessie's arm from the wall. "Frost?"
"A little help?" Cisco asked.
"Not part of the deal," Killer Frost told us.
"Frost!" Harrison told her angrily.
"Hey, hey, hey," Cisco told her. "Bringing us up here wasn't part of the deal, either, but here you are. Something tells me you're not as cold as I thought you were."
Killer Frost walked closer. "Maybe. Maybe not."
Killer Frost grabbed Jessie's chain in both hands, freezing it, breaking it into pieces. She walked up to our cells, putting her hands on the glass, trying to break it by freezing it, but it didn't work.
"What's going on?" Iris 2 asked. "Why isn't it working?"
"I don't know," Killer Frost told us. "I've never had this problem before."
"Dr. Wells?" I asked.
"Carbine," Harrison told us. "It's some form of carbine. These cells are made of some form of carbine. You'll never be able to freeze or burn your way through them."
"Barry, you can't phase out of there?" Cisco asked.
Barry shook his head.
"Just go, all right?" I asked. "Before Zoom and Phoenix get back."
"We're not leaving you here," Cisco told us.
"We can't get out of these cells," Barry told them. "We've tried. A lot. I'm not fast enough to phase through this. You got... Just leave, all right? Just leave."
Barry 2 stepped closer. "Do you know what we did to get here? We convinced her, Killer Frost, to show us the way. Then we climbed some insanely steep cliffs outside on footholds made of ice. Ice. And all of us risked our lives, knowing Zoom and Phoenix were after us, to rescue Jesse, Vera, and you. Now, I don't know you and you don't know me, but I can tell you today, I did things that I never thought possible because I needed to prove to my best friend and to myself that I could. And now if I can do the impossible today, so can you. I'm just Barry Allen. But you are the Flash. And Pyra... Vera needs your help, Barry. She needs you." Barry looked at me worriedly. I looked at him weakly, still in pain. "If you tell yourself you can phase out of there, you'll do it."
Barry took several deep breaths, phasing through the cell wall to get into my cage. We both smiled small smiles.
Cisco chuckled in relief.
Barry helped me stand, phasing us both out of my cell to join the others.
"Okay, let's go," Cisco told us.
"Go," Harrison told us.
I pointed at the masked man. "Hey, wait, wait, wait. I'm not leaving him here."
"Vera, there's no time," Harrison told me.
Phoenix flew inside. "He's not going anywhere, and neither are any of you."
Zoom rushed inside, looking at Killer Frost. "Thank you for bringing them to us."
"You double-crossed us?" Cisco asked. "They killed Ronnie."
"Guess my heart is as cold as you thought after all," Killer Frost told him.
"I can't believe you," Cisco told her. "Just so you know, you would be very disappointed in you right now."
"Zoom, Phoenix, let them go," I told them. "All you need is me and Barry."
"You're right," Phoenix told me. "We may not be able to kill you yet, but we can kill them."
Phoenix flew toward Jessie, grabbing her with a fist of fire.
Jessie started to cry. "No, no."
"I told you I would kill you in front of your father," Phoenix told her.
"No," Harrison told her. "No!"
I used fire to push Phoenix away from Jessie.
Zoom zoomed toward me.
Killer Frost sent a stream of ice into Zoom to stop him. "Get out of here."
Killer Frost continued to freeze Phoenix and Zoom.
Cisco looked at her in surprise. "Caitlin."
"You were right," Killer Frost told him. "They killed Ronnie."
"Thank you," Cisco told her.
The others started to run.
I stopped next to the masked man's cage, looking at Barry. "We can't leave without him."
"Vera, there's no time," Harrison told me. "There's no time, Barry."
"I can't hold them forever," Killer Frost told us.
Barry looked at the masked man. "All right, we're coming back for you when this is all over, all right?"
"Go!" Killer Frost told us.
"We're coming back," Barry told him.
Barry and I left with the others while Killer Frost continued to freeze Phoenix and Zoom.
~
We got back to STAR Labs.
Iris 2 looked at Barry 2. "You okay?"
"I'm fine," Barry 2 answered. "I'm just a mess."
"You guys need to get out of Central City, all right?" Barry asked. "Any place you think you'll be safe from Phoenix and Zoom?"
"Yeah," Iris 2 answered. "I have some family in Atlantis that can help us."
"Yeah, okay, good," I told them.
Barry looked at Barry 2. "You may not have been struck by lightning over here like I was, but today, you risked your life to save people you didn't even know. That's a hero, Barry. Thank you, both."
They nodded.
"Is my father still alive in your earth?" Iris 2 asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, he is."
"Give him a hug for me, will you?" Iris 2 asked.
Barry nodded. "I will."
Iris 2 nodded.
I grabbed the shackle that was still on Jessie's wrist, using fire to burn it away without hurting her.
Jessie and Harrison hugged.
"Hey, you guys need to get someplace safe, too," I told them. They pulled away. "Where are you going?"
Harrison sighed. "The only place we can."
They walked into Harrison's office to talk and pack up.
"Dad, we can't just leave," Jessie told him.
"We have to, honey," Harrison told her.
"What, you want me to leave everything I have here?" Jessie asked. "My friends, my family? I mean, my life?"
"You don't have a life here anymore," Harrison told her. "Neither do I. Zoom and Phoenix are too powerful. I can't stop them. And as long as they are here, they are gonna hunt us down. Until we're dead."
An alarm started to blare.
"Wells, if you're coming with us, we have to go," I told him. "Come on."
"Come on," Barry told us.
We walked up to the speed canon so that we could travel through the breach back to our earth.
Barry and I took Jessie and Cisco over first, going back for Harrison.
Zoom was holding Harrison by the back of his shirt. "Forgetting someone?"
"Let him go," I told him.
"Close the breach," Harrison told us. Barry shook his head. "Tell Jessie I love her."
"Tell her yourself," Barry told him.
I shot fire into Zoom's chest, making him let go of Harrison and fall to the floor.
Barry zoomed to grab Harrison and travel through the breach to our world.
I held Zoom off with fire, using fire to fly through the breach to get back to Earth 1. I lost the strength to fly anymore once I got there, falling. Barry caught me before I fell to the floor.
I looked at Jay. "Close it. Close it now!"
Jay threw the device into the breach to close it.
Caitlin looked at us in relief. "You did it. You made it."
Joe smiled. "Barry."
Joe and Barry hugged.
I sighed in relief.
Quinn helped me sit down, looking at the burns on my skin that were still healing. "Phoenix?"
I nodded. "Yeah."
Jay was standing in front of the breach, looking at us, smiling.
Zoom phased his hand through his back into his chest, shredding his heart, pulling him into the breach.
Quinn screamed in horrified denial. "No!"
The breach closed forever, leaving us horrified.
