Chapter 6: Thunder and Lightning
Miles pushes open the door to the infirmary and a small little bell above the brown door rings, signaling our arrival. The infirmary itself is a warmly colored room with wooden floors and white beds lined up with curtains separating them, as well as a room for operating and a locked cabinet with files inside it and a medicine cabinet. We spot Drusilla, Eva, and Dexter in one of the areas to the left, the rest of the infirmary empty except for a blonde woman who's sorting files in the cabinet.
Drusilla's covered up under the covers of her hospital bed as Dexter's sitting on the edge of the right side of the bed in a pair of light grey joggers and a light orange t-shirt, his caramel hair all ruffled and his hazel eyes worried as he sits there watching over Drusilla, who's currently asleep, her long blonde hair splayed across the sheets and her brown-grey eyes shut. Eva stands beside the left side of the bed and scribbles down information on a chart before she turns and sees us, her lips curving up in a small smile and her grey-blue eyes peering at us from beneath her black glasses.
Eva turns and walks passed us, the room lights shining down on her dirty blonde hair as she places a hand on Miles's shoulder and squeezes it gently before she keeps walking. Dexter glances over at us and smiles sadly as we stand near the entrance to the little makeshift room.
"How is she?" Miles asks quietly.
"Eva said she'll be okay," Dexter answers, glancing back over at Drusilla, "she said she'll probably be in shock for a little while and may be far from her usual self, but she'll be okay in time. She's been asleep since her surgery finished. Eva said she should be awake in a few more hours."
"That's good," I breathe out in relief.
"Yeah..." Dexter trails off before he glances down at his lap and clenches his hands before he looks back up at his, his gaze hardened, "I want you to catch whoever did this and I want you to give them hell. It's...it's not right...not to her..."
"We will," Miles nods reassuringly and Dexter's expression slightly softens as he nods.
"I'll continue looking out for Drusilla," Dexter says and smiles sadly as he looks back at her, "and I'm never going to leave her side."
"Keep us updated, okay?" I smile sadly and Dexter nods.
"Of course," he says with a forced smile before he turns his attention back to Drusilla, brushing a stray hair out of her face.
"Come on," I breathe out, placing my hand on Miles's shoulder, "let's go..."
Miles nods and we quietly leave the infirmary, Eva and her coworker both waving us goodbye on the way out.
Just then, our comms bling and we exchange a glance upon recognizing the familiar noise that tells us we're wanted for a quest. Miles and I quickly run back to the arena where we grab our gear and get changed before we head to the guild area. We find Skye waiting there with Valerian and Veddrian, who both watch us silently as we run up to the counter.
"What is it?" I ask, wondering what would be happening right at dusk.
"The four of you need to travel to the rain forest," Skye says, her eyes flickering between all of us, "there's a lightning leviathan on the loose in the waters nearby. Rank S, hunt to kill, reward of fifty thousand. Be careful, a thunder leviathan is also nearby in the area and the two make a lethal team. Any questions?"
Upon our silence, Skye nods and marks us down for the quest, waving and wishing us luck as we head to the jump zone. My eyes flicker to the team board and I notice that teams teal and purple are still in the field on their quest to find any information on who attacked Drusilla. I find myself worrying, but deep down I know that they'll be okay. Meanwhile, Drusilla has been temporarily removed from the pink team, leaving just Dexter and an empty space in pink's slot. I sigh and shake my head, not liking the sight of that, but I press on and join the others at the jump zone.
"Here's how we'll do this," Valerian starts, his eyes flickering between me and Miles, "I'll go with Celes and Veddrian will go with Miles. That way we have a skill-set from each team together at all times and we'll also learn how to work together more fluidly. Good? Good."
Miles goes to interrupt, but Valerian and Veddrian already jump off the deck and Miles sighs in defeat.
"Well," he says as his eyes meet mine, "good luck."
"You too," I nod, wondering how he'll take not being the leader for once-- not that he's bad at following orders, it's just that he's a good leader and it'll be frustrating if he knows he could've done something better.
The two of us jump off together and follow after Valerian and Veddrian, teleporting to the rain forest as soon as we get close enough to the ground. Veddrian and Miles end up in the south end of the rain forest while we're in the north, and somehow I end up landing and stumbling into Valerian. I tumble into his chest and place a hand on him to steady myself, scowling up at him as he raises a brow. I forcefully push him away from me and begin stopping through the rain forest, which is wide open with a large body of water off to the right, lots of dirt and mud, large leafy colorful plants, and tall canopy trees.
"Look, there's a pathway," I say as I start heading straight, pushing aside some leaves to giant plants as I head up a dirt hill that has a stream of water running down it that branches into multiple smaller streams.
"Right," Valerian nods and follows after me, his red and black handled longsword with a silver blade drawn.
We march up the hill and swat away a few bugs here and there, a few animals rustling in the plant life around us. At the top of the hill, there are three deeper streams that lead to a large roaring waterfall and there's a small island of plants in the middle of the three streams, trees surrounding the entire muddy area. I raise a hand above my eyes as I stand at the top and scan the mountain ranges in the distance, noticing multiple other waterfalls around us and some rainbow colored mist. The sky itself is slightly cloudy with thin wispy clouds here and there, a crescent moon lighting the dark blue sky and making the clouds luminescent.
"Hey, Celes," Valerian starts and I turn to look at him over my shoulder.
"Hmm?" I hum.
"I don't know if it's just me, but you seem to have some sort of problem with me," Valerian says, crossing his arms against his chest.
"What ever gave you that impression?" I smile sweetly and turn back around, starting to march through the area again and towards the waterfall.
"Look, if we're going to work together--" Valerian starts.
"It's not just about working together," I snap as I turn on my heel sharply to face him, my hands on my hips, "it's not about just getting the job done or being the strongest on the team. It's about genuine connection, it's about caring for the safety of your teammates, it's about so much more than what you can possibly perceive."
"I do care--" Valerian starts, stepping forwards, and I cut him off once more.
"Don't even," I laugh and raise a hand, shaking my head, "you don't even know me. You may care about not getting me killed, but you don't actually care about me. I don't want to hear that from you. You think you're stone cold, Valerian Redden? You're not. You're not at all. You're so damn see-through that it's funny to me."
"Then tell me," Valerian says and walks up to me, staring into my eyes intently, "if you think you know me so well, then tell me."
"You like to act like you're all that, you like to show off in an elegant but subtle manner, and you're good and you know it," I say with a sigh, crossing my arms, "and your arrogance isn't arrogance at all, your arrogance is knowing just how good you are, but I doubt you'd make a bet you know you can't win or keep, a check that you can't cash. And it's something you hide behind, because you think if everyone knows just how powerful you are, they'll leave you alone. And they do, but it's not because of your talents, it's because of your front that you put up of being such a hardass. And I don't dislike you for any of that, the reason I dislike you is because you feel the need to be so cold all the time and that, because of that, you never genuinely care because you never let yourself care. That, Valerian, is why I don't like you."
"That's not--" Valerian starts, his eyes swimming with confliction.
Suddenly, a giant thud crashes against the side of the mountain and my eyes widen as I stumble backwards over the waterfall, a gasp bubbling passed my lips. As I'm falling, I see Valerian's eyes widen.
"Shit!" Valerian shouts and throws off his jacket and finger-less gloves, as well as discarding his longsword, before he runs after me.
As I'm almost near the bottom of the waterfall, I see Valerian leap off of the edge of the waterfall head first, his arms in front of him. I end up sinking beneath the waves with a crash, the water engulfing around me. My eyes widen as I attempt to swim upwards, but my armor keeps me from going very far. I struggle to remove my heavy skirt, which would leave me in a pair of black cotton shorts that I wear as an extra layer in case my skirt flies up, and I find myself sinking deeper, bubbles occasionally forming in front of me as my breath fills the water. I thrash around and give up on my skirt, managing to take off my scythe instead, which floats beside me in the water. I then go to work on my boots and greaves, but an eerie feeling fills me and a chill runs down my spine in the process.
I then hear an electric humming noise coming from my right and I let out a muffled scream, multiple bubbles filling the air as I notice the large dark blue leviathan swimming directly for me, electricity sparking around its back and tail. The leviathan rushes passed me quickly, smacking me aside from the speed of it and making me roll through the water, my scythe spinning multiple feet away from me. Due to my lack of breath from my startled state, I find the darkness closing in on me and I continue falling slowly, my arms and legs raising above me as my eyes start to flutter shut. Before I black out, a crash fills the waves above me and I see a dark shadow swimming towards me hurriedly, and then the world is gone.
