Chapter Twenty-Two: This is Just the Way Things Have to Be

~from Kaneki's POV 2nd person~
You grabbed your twin sister's hand as you stood up, and for just a second, the wind stopped blowing and the air was calm. Her hair fell back around her face, revealing her expressionless eyes, and the night was completely silent.
But you weren't the only two people on the roof. "What?" Touka yelled, taking a step closer. "You, too, Kaneki?" she asked, sounding betrayed. "You can't tell me that you mean to join Aogiri, right?"
She laughed nervously, but you didn't meet her eyes.
"You're not serious, right?" she asked, and you finally looked at her.
"My place is beside (y/n), wherever she may choose to be," you said, your gaze unwavering.
Touka took a step back. "And if she chose to go to Aogiri...?"
"Then I'd follow her until she plotted a new direction." You looked back at (y/n), staring into her eyes, hoping to see a glimpse of...something, anything...but her eyes were as dead as her emotions were. "Goodbye, Touka. And thank you." You nodded at your sister, and she leapt, taking you with her, out of sight, leaving Touka alone on the roof.

~from Hide's POV 2nd person~
You stopped pedaling your bike on the middle of a bridge, putting your feet down on either side to stay balanced, and looked toward where the CCG was conducting a raid on a ghoul organization's headquarters. Without a doubt, you felt that (y/n) was there somewhere, but with the way you were right now, you weren't strong enough to be anything but a burden to her. One day, you promised, I'll be worthy to stand beside her. I'll be able to protect her. Until I reach that point, I'm going to work harder and harder so I can eventually be of use to her. Touching the brim of your hat, you sent a final glance towards the building before putting your hands back on the handle bars and continuing on your way. Be safe, my love that I could never confess.

~from Touka's POV 2nd person~
After (y/n) and Kaneki left, you crumbled to you knees, utterly confused and messed up. "But...why? How could she go to Aogiri? I thought that we were friends. Did I neglect her in some way? Does she blame me for what happened? Or is she just insane? Both of them, in fact." You paused, looking up at the moon and searching the night sky for answers that didn't exist. "At least if she had Stockholm syndrome, I wouldn't feel so confused and betrayed. At least there would be a reason." As tears slid down your cheek, you wiped them away. "Kaneki, you idiot."

~from Mr. Yoshimura's POV 2nd person~
You watched Aogiri crumbling around you, but you knew that they were far from over. Still, while the powerful members were escaping, your fellow Anteiku members were still inside, most likely trying to avoid the CCG. I need to buy them some time. You walked, slowly but surely, towards the building. I didn't want to do this, but now it seems it's my time to join in the fight.

~from Ayato's POV 2nd person~
You watched Kaneki and scary chick leave Touka on the roof from your hiding spot. I don't know how much longer I can do this, Sister. Making you hate me is best for both of us...but it hurts me so much. I just wish you'd understand...From your nook, you spotted an Aogiri ghoul climbing up the wall towards the roof just a few feet away from where you were hidden. Without blinking, you silently released your kagune and slit his throat, not even bothering to come out of the shadows as you murdered him. As you watched his body fall and impact with the ground far below, you looked back towards Touka, your eyes pained but your purpose clear. It's okay, Sister. As long as I'm here, I won't let anyone hurt you. I just wish that you didn't have to hate me in order for me to keep you safe, but I knew what I was getting into when I signed up for this. You may hate me until I die, however soon that may be, but I'll love you forever. It pains me that you'll never realize this...

~from Juuzou's POV 2nd person~
You swung the scythe, reveling in the way it sliced through ghouls with ease. You laughed, hacking away skin and bone, until all of your attackers - or rather, victims - were deceased. "It's no fun if you break so easily," you whispered to the nearest head, which was a good ten feet from its respective body. "Play a little longer, why don't you?" Laughing, you stood up from your crouched position and moved into the next room. "Who else would like to play with me?"

~from Reader's POV 2nd person~
You knew what you had to do to protect Anteiku. You weren't sure whether or not you wanted Kaneki to come with because you were sure that he wouldn't survive in Aogiri the way he was now, but he'd made his choice and you would respect it. While you already missed Touka and the others in some part deep inside your soul, you couldn't regret the path you'd chosen. It's the only way to protect them.
There was only one regret you had in mind. Hide...can you see me right now? What I've become? Are you disgusted? Scared? Angry? Do you hate me? Pity me? Sympathize with me? Or can you see past all of this back to the person I used to be? Maybe that's the wrong question. She's gone now. In a different world, the two of us could be drinking coffee at Anteiku right now, just the two of us, and we wouldn't be waiting for Kaneki, because we didn't meet up for him but rather to simply spend time together. I wish that were true, but it's not. It can't be.
Hide, can you see me right now?
Hide, can you still love me?
Because as awful as it is to say, despite what I am, I just might still love you...
And as awful as it is to say, I just might wish that you felt the same way...
