Chapter 13

I woke to see a hazy, foggy world. I made my way to the tail and sat down in the rear gunner's seat. The plexiglass was covered in small drops of dew. I was still tired, so I closed my eyes and daydreamed.

I imagined coming home, a hero of the war. All the other kids who made of us would respect us, us remaining friends for decades. We would have children, grandchildren, who we could tell our stories of the war. Museums displaying our ships, restored after all of the years, in perfect working order.

Then, I went back to the other kids from my school. Where were they? Were they alive? We had been the only ones drafted, but there were many more drafts after us. What world would we come back to? What if the war never ended? Would we continue fighting until the years hit 2000? Was that even possible?

I opened my eyes and stretched. Time to get on with the day. I sat back and closed my eyes again. My job was just to sit around. I wanted to do stuff! I took the block of wood from my pocket, as well as my knife. I saw a twig on the ground, perfectly straight. I picked it up and cut it to about two inches. I carved a hole in the wood about the same diameter. I then rounded the edges.

What I had was a rough model of a KV-2 turret. I set it down on a ledge. Not bad. I had a ton of time on my hands, and a few pieces of wood in the plane. As I reached for a larger piece, Aaron ran into camp and started yelling.

"You guys won't believe what I saw! It's incredible!"

I leaned towards the door, trying to hear what he found.

"There's an old British tank from World War One! In the forest!"

Everyone left to check it out. I had to stay back. I looked at the field ahead of me. Some planes flew high overhead. Then I saw it. An armored truck driving across the field. At least fifty troops marching with it. I quickly snatched up the two belts of ammo hanging from the ceiling. I loaded the two 50-Caliber guns. I was careful not to move the gun or make any noise.

I glanced over and saw they were coming closer. My fingers wrapped around the trigger. If they went around my rotation, they could board me from behind. They were getting closer. I pulled the trigger and aimed at everything that moved. I focused on the truck, and it exploded in a fireball. Some bullets hit the metal skin around me.

When there was no movement, I stopped firing. Thousands of bullet casings laid around me. My friends ran back, guns primed.

"What happened?" Joey yelled.

"German troops. They were marching through the field and they saw the plane. I had to!" I replied.

"Well, we need to extinguish the fire before planes spot the smoke." Michael said.

After the fire was put out, night began to fall. I decided to try to walk around. I looked in a bag carried by a soldier. There was a map. It had a circle drawn in the mountains a few dozen miles from our approximate location. Could it be the massive floating island? The main HQ for the Axis? I rolled up the map and put it by the near two dozen wood carvings on the shelf. When I went back out, I saw the piece of wood I had been searching for!

I picked it up and went back inside. It was a fairly large piece. I carved the sloping armor for the front first. Next, the treads. When I finished, I had a hull for a tank twice the size of the KV-2. I put the KV turret on, and I had a scary tank. I called it a KV-2X2. "Fearmaker". I would need to ask someone if it could be made into a real tank.
