Chapter Twenty-Seven

"No fucking way!"

Winter had sat across from the two boys that exchanged conversation. North had dragged Ezra all the way to her room, out of all the places in the bunker. Not that she minded of course. Winter couldn't help but admire the boy who's perched onto China's mattress, his long legs stretched out before him. The boy is pretty handsome, no doubt.

Hopefully I'll see what China claims that she's been seeing, Winter had thought to herself as her eyes meet with Ezra's.

"You have a nice room, I like the decorations." Ezra pointed out. Winter blinked, taken aback by his forwardness. She shoots him an awkward smile and leaned back on her bed. "Yeah, it is." She admitted.

"But my sister was the one who decorated the room." She added, giving China credit.

"Speaking of which, where is that oddball?" North asked sluggishly, leaning upward to face Winter.

Winter shrugged in response, "No clue. China doesn't tell me everything."

"And..." Winter added, glancing at the bruise amongst North's cheek. "Shouldn't you be tending to that bruise...instead of eating brownies?"

North used his thumb to wipe the remaining crumbs off the corners of his mouth. The plastic bag containing the sweets had slipped out of his pocket and onto the bed. Ezra glanced down and back at North suspiciously.

"Don't tell me..." Ezra mumbled lowly. North smirked, grabbing the bag with his thumb and index finger and holding it out towards his new companion.

"Yep, it's good to wake and bake...and get blazed by the afternoon." North remarked hazily. He leaned foward, extending the bag toward Winter, who shook her hand dismissively.

She glanced at Ezra for a split second then back at North, "I'm not about to have Faith scream at me like last time." She declined.

North shrugged while he opened up the bag, "What she don't know won't hurt her." He mumbled carelessly.

Winter shook her head and leaned forward on her mattress, hands cupping around her face. "I wouldn't recommend getting high with North ever so often, he's the troublemaker of the group."

Ezra laughed good-naturedly as North shot Winter a glare.

"That's because Faith is so damn blind to the other obvious trouble makers!" North complained and held his arm out dramatically. "Tyrese and Nikki literally hump like bunnies, Jay often hides a pack beer underneath his cot, and not to mention, China was caught sneaking out on the surface this morning!"

Winter pressed a finger to her lips, shushing him as she gestured her head toward the door. "Must you be so loud?"

North smiled in response. "Ignore her Michael, Faith may be a little scary but you get used to her after a while."

Ezra narrowed his eyes at Winter, "About the surface...what's wrong with going up there?" He asked, raising a blonde eyebrow.

North suddenly coughed, using his hand to cover his mouth as he slumped over in the bed, "You're asking for a long story mate." He grunted, propping his hands behind his head as he laid on China's pillow.

Winter adjusted  the collar of her long-sleeved turtleneck black shirt. "I haven't been on the surface ever since I set foot here, but my sister has, and from what everyone else says, it's pretty dangerous."

North gazed up at Ezra, who was still awaiting some sort of answer. "The outsiders still roam this place, any sights of a warm blooded animal and..." North used his thumb and moved it across his neck, sticking his tongue out theatrically to finish his sentence.

"That's how we found you." North added, "You were in the gas station, wearing nothing but a pair of Johnnies."

Ezra ran a hand through his hair, his eyes clenched shut as a grimace forms on his face. Winter took notice of this but she doesn't say anything. It was as if he was trying to remember that all happening.

"North, you really don't know how to keep your damn mouth shut when you're blazed." Winter mumbled lowly, North raised his eyebrows and threw both of his hands up surrenderedly, giving Winter the 'what did I do this time?' look.

"Well this is a pretty nice welcoming committee." Ezra stated, even though he was talking, he still seemed pretty tactiturn, at least to Winter.

"It would've been nicer if China actually made face." Winter added with a giggle. "Have you seen her around North?"

"Knowing China, she's being a fatass and stuffing her face with energy bars in the kitchen." North remarked lazily as Winter shot him a glare.

"Fatass?" Winter exasperated, "You're the one stuffing your face with pot brownies!" She pointed out.

As if on que, the door opened in such a speed that North was scrambling to sit up straight, Ezra craned his head upwards and Winter winced.

Winter turned to the door, her lecture already prepared to for her sister, "China-" Her eyes quickly widened as she realized that it was Faith instead.

A shrill wave of silence carried out throughout the room. Faith rolled her eyes at the teens, "I need to have a word with Michael."

North, already sitting upright, was staring at the floor, hoping that Faith didn't catch a glimpse of his bloodshot eyes, the bag of brownies nowhere to be found on the bed. Ezra raised his eyebrows at Faith.

"I'm afraid of words." Ezra answered back sarcastically. Faith's teeth started to gnash at one another as Winter's hand shot over her mouth to hide her triumphant laugh.

Okay, he's probably not that bad. Winter had thought to herself. Anyone that was able to talk back to Faith without batting an eyelash, was deemed pretty ballsy in Winter's book.

Faith folded her arms across her chest. "No." She seethed, "But it's about finding your brother."

This catches Ezra's attention, he quickly sprung himself back onto his feet. "Tell me what I can do-"

"At the end of this week. You come with us and we'll help you find your brother." Faith reassured him, North blinked in astonishment as Faith turned on her heel and started towards the door, closing it behind her.

"Who was she and what the hell happened to Faith?" North mumbled under his breath.
