Chapter Twelve

The day carried on, the routines of everyone in the shelter were put at an abrupt halt due to the meeting Jay called for in the kitchen. China approached him and made a valuable point of how Bob cannot be held in a room forever, before making any rash decisions, Jay decided to hold a meeting in the largest room of the shelter, the kitchen. Even though Faith was the one who laid down the law with an iron fist, this was still a democratic group and the decision had to be decided by popular vote.

In the kitchen, it's rather cramped, Jay leaned against the door, waiting impatiently for Faith to arrive, China sat over one of the coolers next to the fridge, exchanging conversation with Nikki who leaned against the fridge door, giggling here and there. North and Tyrese both hovered over the table, gazing at the new disassembled part of a rifle while Winter isolated herself in the farthest corner of the kitchen, book in hand as she tried to stay in her own introverted world. This simply wasn't Winter's territory after all, she hardly knew what protocols to follow above the shelter, let alone seemed to care for going on the surface.

The door slammed shut, the sound  brought everyone's attention to the late Faith, who stood tall, cigarette flapped out of the side of her mouth while she gave everyone a sharp stare.

She briefly calculated the room, her eyes landed on China, her brow furrowed in distaste. "China, I thought we had discussed this before, coolers aren't chairs," Faith sharply growled, China gave her a good natured laugh, apologizing as she leapt on to her feet.

Everyone's eyes landed on Faith, the silence immediately filled up every crevice of the room, daring for someone's breath to hitch or a pen to drop. China turned to Jay, who loudly cleared his throat.

"I'm sure that everyone knows by now that the new kid is locked in the storage room for the time being." Jay began, hands sliding into his pockets as he paced himself around the room.

Faith let out an annoyed huff, "We want to know what everyone's thoughts are before taking the next step,"

Tyrese half shrugged, "How are we going to know anything about him if he stays locked away? That's grounds for him trying to leave-"

North interrupted Tyrese. "Rese, think of everyone else here! What if we do let this guy free, huh? He would know where we sleep, probably get access-"

"That's not gonna happen!" China interjected, "Look at him yourself! He's scared!"

North rolled his eyes and turned to glare at China, "He needs to be!"

"The goal is for him to find his memories right?" China tried to change the subject, "Nikki herself said that there is a possibility that he has amn-ay-sa...how will we ever know the truth when we're to scared to find it?"

"Amnesia." Nikki corrected China, her tone exhausted. "And it's retrograde amnesia, which means that there's a chance he could obtain those memories and his identity."

"That's too much of a risk! There's also a possibility that he's a good liar! And then what?" North argued as he thrashed his arms out dramatically, "C'mon China, think of your little sister!"

China closed her eyes, using her hands to dust off her clothes as Jay walked up next to her.

"How can we even trust his real identity anyway? What if he's dangerous?" North continued on, his gaze had shifted towards Jay.

"Hey, I get it, but what do you suggest that we do?" Jay asked North, North stared at the ceiling and let out a sharp breath.

He then threw his arms up in frustration, "Shit, I don't know! Throw him back out where he belongs!"

"Uh-uh, He's followed you all to camp already, he knows how to get back, I'm afraid that's even more of a risk than having him under surveillance." Nikki added, her voice strong but soft like silk, China felt a pang of relief rise inside of her.

North ran his hands through his choppy red hair, "You guys heard what I thought,"

"He's literally outnumbered." Winter spoke with a hint of snark in her tone, she closed her book sharply and walked near the table with her hands in the pockets of her blue hoodie. "All of us against one kid? If his memories are truly wiped, he's going to be worried more about finding out who the hell he is instead of going on a killing spree."

"Our guards will be down and the tension will always carry throughout the group," Faith implied, glancing at Jay as she spoke. "While we can't underestimate ourselves, we can't underestimate him either,"

"True," Winter shrugged, "But what good is it gonna do having him quarantined like this? He'd be better off taking his chances out on the surface." Winter added, folding her arms across her chest and her eyebrow raised. She finally inched herself between Tyrese and North.

"Why bring him here at all if he's not even going to live a communal life with us?" She asked, bringing nothing but silence from everyone, she shot China a subtle wink, but her face went back into a stone-like expression.

"She has a point." Nikki agreed with a warm grin, "We could be waiting on a possibility that may not come,"

Nikki's face paled, her hand shot up to mask her nose and mouth from the nauseating smell of tobacco in the air, she quickly looked at the burning embers at the end of Faith's cigarette, another whiff and Nikki would have to cut the meeting short and leave the kitchen.

Faith rolled her eyes as she plucked the cigarette from her lips, "For the love of Christ," She mumbled as the cigarette came into contact with the floor and the heel of her boot shortly after.

"Either way, it's a risk." Tyrese clarified, his arms folded across his chest. "We're going to have to make a couple-"

Like a ticking bomb, Faith had lost her patience. "I don't know why you'd even host the meeting," She interrupted, glaring at Jay, "This is getting us nowhere!" She yelled. China turned, sliding her hands in her pockets and swayed herself back and forth.

"Did you guys forget how you found Winter and I? The condition we were in?" China asked calmly, "We could've been thieves, crazed people who would try and hurt you the moment we hit camp."

Jay closed his eyes and looked away from everyone, a pained expression appeared onto his face as his eyebrows furrowed.

"T-that's different China," North tried to speak but Winter gave him a sharp elbow in the arm.

"How so? We could've been twice the threat, this may not be another Liam situation but for God's sake, the kid has nothing to lose!" She snapped, North slightly recoiled as Winter raised her voice, a red tint appearing over his face as he quickly looked away.

"You guys probably didn't trust us either," China added, giving Jay a genuine look with her big, brown eyes, "But you gave us a chance to prove our worth and we did it, why should it be any different for Bobby?"

"Fine," Jay grumbled, he cracked his knuckles and scratched the back of his neck. "China, Faith." He called their names, bringing the attention of them both in perfect harmony.

"I'll put an end to this....we're going on a supply run with him to test his loyalty." Jay declared, earning a wide-eyed look from almost everyone in the room.
