A boon and a student - myths and legend

Trigger warning: suicide is featured.

Manuel's journal entry

Since Fabiola is busy trying to save Killa and the world from his ex, someone has to record the misadventures of this odd mother-daughter pair. As the butler of this mansion, I will do it. I am responsible for everything, partially. The rest is the witch's fault and the master's Sebastians will.

I entered the picture in 1969. I was about to enter University then. My parents were convinced that education was the only way ahead, so they sent me to Lima with my godmother Clarissa to finish my education. I graduated from high school and even met the woman of my dreams, the beautiful Rosario.

The night I entered the story, I saw Rosario dancing with someone else at a party. What could I do but wish her well? I went to get some alcohol to quench the pain, and I sat on a park bench, ready to nap under the stars.

Then, a stranger sat beside me and asked, "Hey, kid, do you have a tobacco and a lighter?"

I had and did as told. Under the yellow flames of the lighter, the man's funny grey moustache looked even more pitiable. He was skinny, and his eyes seemed unfathomably sad. The stranger mustered a smile that looked like a wince and said, "You seem like a good kid, I have no money to pay you back, but I can give you this box. It will bring you good luck if you don't open it."

I took the box because I liked the designs; they reminded me of figurines I had seen in my hometown in the desert, moon and sun, and a cat-like creature decorated the surface. When I turned to look back at the man, he was already gone.

The strange encounter awakened me, and I carried the box home. I had a bizarre dream that night. A serpent-like creature tried to eat me but then started to purr like a cat. I pet it, and the beast shrank until the size of a guinea pig and happily jumped into my lap.

The strange dream didn't affect my exam performance the next day. I became a university student, and Rosario started to flirt back. Other odd occurrences began to happen; occasionally, I encountered money in the streets. However, every night I dreamt about fantastic creatures meeting me, trying to devour me, but being friendly at last.

Life was like that for a month. Then classes began with a literal bang. I was having a smoke when we heard it. A woman screamed, "Professor José María shot himself, call the ambulance."

We did, but the morbid curiosity doomed me. I went to see the injured. It was the strange man I met in the park. I went home directly and refused to leave my room. I could sleep no more. Was the box the cause of the man's demise?

Clarissa and Rosario tried to make me open the door, but I refused. What was I going to do? Should I get rid of the box?

After three days, my body finally gave up, and I dreamed of the creatures again. It was a somewhat rustic dream of life in the mountains surrounded by all the fantastical creatures that only appear in legends.

When I woke up, I finally opened the box. A baby girl was inside; she had white skin, golden hair and grey eyes. I knew her name just by looking at her smiling face.

Killa.

The door barged in at that moment, and a young man entered. He was as handsome and pale as Killa, but his eyes were deep blue. He looked at the baby and cursed. I feared for the baby and put myself in front of the box.

The man seemed to understand my intent and gave a step back. He examined me from head to toe, I could feel his anger, but he calmed down when he heard the child giggle behind me. "Quiet, pal. I have no ill intent. If you open the box, it is your responsibility now. My name is Sebastian Rodriguez de Monteverde, and I owned that box."

It seems that Professor José María stole the box from him. As Sebastian puts it, the professor came across the legend of the box while compiling codes from the Andes and tried to persuade Sebastian and his dad to open it, which they refused, fearing the consequences. As a last resort, the older man stole it.

I lit a cigar for him, and he explained, "The professor insisted that a magical being was trapped in the box, alive for more than 300 years. My ancestor Don Fernando Rodriguez de Monteverde got the box in the gold mines and told his son never to open it. He didn't do it, and neither did his descendants. We never really questioned the origin of our fortune until the mad professor came into our lives."

Sebastian continued, "I have no idea why the professor killed himself, though, or how to put that thing into a box, and I don't want to lose everything. So, the only idea I can come up with is that you and that baby come to live with me. I will use my fortune to protect the girl."

And that, in summary, is how Killa Rodriguez de Monteverde came into existence. In 50 years, I have witnessed her magic many times, and it still amazes me the little miracles that a moon child can create and how many people sought her charm, not realizing the price, but that is another story.

In five decades, Killa has barely aged to look like she is five years old and behaves as such, but we aren't that lucky. Master Sebastian got diagnosed with cancer, and before disappearing, he supervised the selection process to find a new nanny for Killa.

Through the witch's intervention, we got Fabiola, a chaotic force of nature that loved Killa unconditionally, and this is their story.
