Chapter 4

Marcus// The Ark

"Here it is. We know they've landed, but communications are down, which means we're still blind to conditions on the ground. Thanks to Abby's wristbands, at least we know how those conditions affect the human body, which is more than we've had for 100 years, so nice work. Now, what are they telling us?" I look around for answers.

"Two dead kids. Dark tiles." Abby explains, then points to the screens with the kids information about their health. Two of the hundred, however, are dark, meaning they've lost communications which means their really just dead. Great. "Dr. Jackson, please share out theory with councilor Kane."

"Of course. Granted, they've only been on the ground for 7 minutes. But as of now, we believe the fatalities are due to the landing, not radiation levels." I nod my head. Makes sense, but they should be thinking of all possibilities.

"Both boys died at the same time that we lost contact with the drop ship." I look to Abby.

"Rough landing? That's your theory?" We need to think if all possibilities, radiation could've killed them and yet here they are just assuming the landing killed these two kids.

"The dots connect." Jackson doesn't intrude in me and Abby's conversation.

"Would you agree that if it was radiation, we'd see fatalities climb fairly quickly now?" Staring at the board, red appears on almost all of the teenagers, "because I'm noticing a lot of red on that board."

Their attention goes to the board before Abby speaks up, "Spiking vital signs, two possibilities. One, injuries sustained during landing."

"And the other?"

She gives me a bored look "They're excited to be there."

I draw my pencil along the map that's on the drop ship opening. Two feet walk down the drop ship until they're beside me.

"We got problems. The communication system is dead. I went to the roof. A dozen panels are missing. Heat fried the wires." Wells stares at me, waiting for my response. None of that matters if we don't get food.

"Well, all that matters right now is getting to Mount Weather. See? Look." I point to the circle, "This is us." I drag the line to the next location, "This is where we need to get to if we want to survive." Wells takes a step back from me once he's done analyzing the map.

"Where'd you learn to do that?" I don't look at him, but instead stare ahead at the green trees, or so I think they're trees. "Your father."

I place my things down and ignore Wells.

"Ah, cool, a map. They got a bar in this town? I'll buy you a beer." Turning around, I see a boy who has ridiculous goggles on his head with short dark brown hair. I recognize him as the guy who pointed out there was no machine hum when we first landed.

"Do you mind?" Wells grabs the boys arm and shoves him backward

"Woah." He backs up, looking slightly scared, almost tripping on the ground.

"Hey, hey, hey, get your hands off him. He's with us." Another boy walks up to Wells with some other people following behind him.

"Relax, we're just trying to find out where we are." I roll my eyes, seeing Wells defending himself.

"We're on the ground. That not good enough for you." The boy recognized as Bellamy and his sister Octavia interfere. Now, everybody's attention is on us.

Wells looks lost and I can't help but be glad he's in this situation, "We need to find Mount Weather. You heard my father's message. That has to be our first priority." I follow Wells, agreeing with him for the first and probably last time in a while.

"Screw your father." Octavia says. I can't help but agree with her, his father killed my father and I hate them both for it, "what you think you're in charge here, you and your little princess?" She gives me a nasty look at me. Who the fuck does she think she is?

"Do you think we care who's in charge? We need to get to Mount Weather. Not because the chancellor said so, but because the longer we wait, the hungrier we'll get and the harder this'll be. How long do you think we'll last without those supplies? We're looking at a 20- mile trek, okay? So if we want to get there before dark, we need to leave now." This reminds me of the ark. I'm acting just like the chancellor, ordering everybody around, but food is a necessity.

"I got a better idea. You two go, find it for us. Let the privileged do the work for a change." Privileged? It's not like I could decide whether I would have my mother as part of the council. These immature kids can't get it through their thick skull that if we don't leave now, we're all going to die, and it won't be from radiation.

Chants of agreements come from the surrounding crowd.

"You're not listening. We all need to go." Beside me, wells gets pushed by Murphy, startling me just a little bit.

"Look at this everybody, chancellor of earth." Everybody laughs, though it's true I don't find it funny because we should be sending groups to go to mount weather.

"Think that's funny?" Murphy makes a quick move to swipe wells off his feel and wells falls onto the dirt.

"Wells!" After everything he's done, I still can't help but rush back to him.

"Yeah, come on get him."

"No, but that was. All right." Wells stands up, but his leg is hurt and he can barely stand on it. Murphy looks like he is having the time of his life.

"What you gonna do now, Wells?" Murphy makes a quick move to wells and wells flinches, but Murphy doesn't hit him.

"Come on. Come on." Just as wells is about to make a move, somebody jumps onto the ground in between them.

"Kid has got one leg. How about you wait until it's a fair fight?" Finns arrival shocked everybody and nobody says anything until Octavia starts walking towards him.

"Hey, spacewalker, rescue me next." Finn smirks and I can't help but feel something. The group dispersed and Bellamy has a disapproving look on his face. "What? He's cute."

"He's a criminal."

"They're all criminals." Bellamy brings her away from me and I can't hear their conversation anymore.

"Look, o, I came here to protect you."

Octavia

"I have been locked up one way or another all my life. I am done following orders. I need to have fun, bell. I need to just do something crazy just because I can, and no one, including you, is gonna stop me."

"I can't stay with them, O." I roll my eyes. Changing the subject, like always.

"Now what are you talking about?" He grabs my arm and pulls me even farther away from everybody, making me more concerned. What could he had possibly done?

"I did something, ok, to get on the drop ship, something that they will kill me for when they come down. I can't say what it is just yet, but you have to trust me. You do still trust me, don't you?"

"Yeah." He smiles at me but I can't help but feel worried.

If you liked this chapter, don't forget to leave a vote, it really helps me out.

Another thing, when Bellamy says O, it is intentional. It's one of his nicknames for Octavia.
