Chapter One

( A/N Hi everyone! Since I found the draft of Sixteen on my computer, I decided to rewrite my story!

Enjoy! )

The day I turned sixteen was a very unusual day. I don't mean unusual because people throw mud pies in your face or have food fights with the birthday cake instead of eating it...yeah my family's weird. No, I mean unusual because some very strange things started happening when I turned sixteen. It all started the morning after my birthday. As soon as I entered the bathroom, I started feeling really dizzy and I felt like I wanted to vomit.

Hunching over the sink, I opened my mouth, ready to throw up when the feelings stopped, and I looked in the mirror and gasped, discovering a slight redness underneath my eyes. Although the redness wasn't really a line, it was more of a swirl that went up and stopped right at the corners of my eyes. I was probably crying too much from the happiness of seeing that my parents and siblings all pitched in and bought me a karaoke set and a grand piano, because they know I love music. Music and reading are the two things that I can't live without. If I didn't have my music or my tens of thousands of books in my room, I wouldn't know how to survive without being bored. After I splashed water on my face and convinced myself that I was going nuts, I headed downstairs for breakfast.

"Good morning, Mom." Walking into the kitchen, I kissed her on the cheek. "Good morning, dear. Did you sleep well?" Mom asked.

I smiled at her. "I slept great." Raising an eyebrow, I focused my attention on the music playing in the living room. "What is that, an automatic piano?" Mom laughed. "No, Jacob has been playing ever since he woke up this morning." Jacob is my older brother, by five years. He's a genius at playing piano and guitar and he's self-taught on both instruments which is why I admire him.

The smile remained on my face as I walked into the brightly colored living room. Our living room was painted with beautiful shades of yellow and light brown. Despite the contrast, between the two colors, it was really pretty. I broke my gaze away and focused on Jacob, who was playing the piano with his eyes closed, his fingers dancing among the keys. My heart danced with the melody that was coming out of the piano, and I closed my eyes, swaying with the music, and hummed softly to the song.

I didn't even notice that Jacob stopped playing and was gazing at me with a thoughtful smile. "So I'm guessing you liked it?" I blushed and tried to hide my smile. "Yes, you're amazing. You should seriously think of applying to music colleges instead of going towards business-like Dad." I sat down beside him, resting my fingers on the keys. Jacob chuckled. "Hey, it's what Dad wants me to do, so I've got to make him happy. Isn't that what matters?"

I scowled at him. "Jacob, I know it's meaningful to make Mom and Dad happy; it matters to you, but you have to decide for yourself too. It's your decision, right?" Jacob sighed. "That's true. You do bring up a good point as always, little sister."

I mock-punched him and made a face. "I'm not little anymore, I'm sixteen." He laughed, heartily. "You're still little compared to me, Caroline." I sighed and grumbled. "I know...I just wish everyone would stop treating me like a kid." Jacob looked down at the piano keys, running his fingers over them. "Carol, no matter what, I will never stop picking on you." He looked at me, grinning from ear to ear. "You know that, right?" I smiled at him narrowly. "Yeah, I know. You're my big brother, you have to." Jacob poked my ribs, making me laugh. I played a chord on the piano, humming, and Jacob joined in, and soon the house was full of music again as we played and sang the Titanic song.

A feeling of happiness sparked inside me as I played along with my firstborn brother. There are a total of six people in our family. My mom, her name is Amy, my dad, his name is Carter, me, my older brother Jacob, who is twenty-one, my middle brother Chris, who is twenty, and my younger brother, Nathaniel, who is nineteen. We're a very close family. We always go out anywhere together, and if someone has something else to do, we postpone the family dinner for another day. Everything we do, we do it together and there are no secrets in our family; everyone is understanding.

Although, I still don't know why neither Jacob or Mom hadn't said anything about the streaks under my eyes...surely they would have seen them by now?

I stopped playing the piano and excused myself to use the restroom. I blinked in confusion as I looked in the mirror. The lines and swirls had disappeared as if they were never there! I made a confused face in the mirror, then, hearing my mother call us for breakfast, I sprinted to the kitchen to help set the table, but when I walked in, my mother and Jacob were already seated waiting for me.

I smiled and sat down for breakfast, digging into the deliciousness of strawberry covered crepes with icing and chocolate chip pancakes. We were all laughing and talking heartily, having such a great time until everyone yawned. Mom laughed. "It looks like we're all sleepy after that big breakfast." Jacob nodded then switched his gaze to me, laughing. "I think Caroline is about to fall asleep at the table." I stuck my tongue out at him and giggled. "Why don't we all just go lie down for a nap, and clean this stuff when we wake up?" Mom nodded. "That's a good idea."

We all said our goodbyes, as we headed to our rooms, and I turned my light off, getting all snug under my blankets and drifted off to sleep, having strange dreams about an academy and lots of students attending weird classes, like magical training, and reading books like How to succeed in your first magical battle. Really weird... it was the first time I've ever had a dream like that.

The dream immediately shifted me to a forest, tall trees looming around me. Sleepily, I followed a path towards a bright light, hearing the tick-tock of a clock behind me. A very loud tick-tock. The sun shone into my eyes, and I gaped at the sight before me. This is so weird...is this some type of school? Suddenly, the hands of the clock started to whirl rapidly into a circle, then the sun shone into my eyes, and I fell into darkness.

I groaned a little as I woke up to use the bathroom, rubbing my eyes, I looked at the clock on the plain wall in front of me. It read six forty-five in the morning. I blinked and thought to myself I never wake up that early...not even to use the bathroom! I looked around, seeing sharp flames encase the bathroom but strangely, they weren't burning anything. I rubbed my eyes again to make certain I wasn't dreaming, but they were still there! How weird...am I dreaming? I got out of the bathroom and my eyes almost popped out of my head.

This isn't my bedroom! Where am I??

To my left, there was a king-sized bed with a bright red comforter on top, and a red skirt underneath, with orange-yellow pillows that resembled the sunset. To the right of the room, there was a walk-in closet and to the right of the bed, there was a small orange-colored desk with lots of books. I walked to the walk-in closet, and my jaw dropped open as I stared at all of my clothes, floating in the air, neatly arranged. There was a bright red drawer when you walked into the closet, and that had all my undergarments, and my books and music. I flushed bright red at the thought of a guy touching my clothing and intimates and I got out of the closet and sat on the bed, trying to remember what happened.

The last thing I remember is falling asleep at home...how did I end up here?

I looked up at the sunset-colored ceiling and saw a small intercom in the middle. I wonder what that is for... Looking to my left, I saw a balcony covered with orange curtains. Walking on it, my mouth dropped open in shock. The view was like I was in a fairy tale! There were lava puddles on the ground, bubbling, and they rose up to the balcony and let out many loud pops. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! I rested my arms on the ledge and leaned forward, loving the feeling of warmth in the air. I felt at home here as if I was meant to be here all along...but why??

A knock at the door startled me out of my thoughts. Going to the door, I opened it to reveal a brunette-haired maid, standing with her hands clasped in front of her, and her head bowed. I eyed her warily. "Yes? Can I help you?" The maid nodded, refusing to look at me. "Yes, miss. You are Caroline Decker, correct?" I nodded. "Yes, I am." She raised her head slightly, still not meeting my eyes. "I have been instructed to accompany all first-year students to the Auditorium for Briefing, miss." First-year...? Briefing...? I nodded. "Please give me a moment to change and I will be with you shortly." She bowed her head. "Of course, miss."

I closed the door, and walked to the closet, trying to figure out how to get my clothes down from flying, while at the same time, mentally choosing to wear my red-orange knee-length dress. No sooner had I thought about wearing the clothes, they floated down, spun around me, and magically fixed themselves to my body. I looked down, wide-eyed. "Cool!" I decided to wear my black flats with little red bows on them, and they appeared on my feet. I danced in happiness. "This is so awesome! I can pick out clothes with my mind! ...but how am I doing this exactly...??" I went to the bathroom to hastily wash my face and tie my auburn hair back into a tight ponytail, then walked out of my room. Looking around for the maid, I skipped over to where she was sitting on a bench. "I'm ready to go." She nodded without a word and led me down the hallway.

I was in awe of the building. It was like a castle! The building I was in had a really high ceiling, that was decorated with many beautiful chandeliers, and they had shining gems of different colors; red, blue, purple, pink, orange, silver, green, black, and white. It was pretty to look at and as I glanced around, I noticed that every room in the hallway had a gem above it, each room of a different color. "What are those for?" I asked the maid. She smiled. "Those represent the Elements that each student in the academy possesses, miss Decker." I raised an eyebrow. "Elements?" She nodded. "Everything will be explained at the Briefing, miss."

I hummed and we continued to walk until we reached a large auditorium with many students all chatting and laughing with one another. I went and sat down next to a boy with dark brown hair, wearing a dark green jacket, and black jeans. His emerald eyes sparkled at me, and he smiled, holding his hand out towards me. "Hi, new here?" I grinned and shook his hand. "Yeah, I'm Caroline. What's your name?" He grinned. "I'm Emmanuel, but call me Em. You're a first-year, right?" I nodded. "Where exactly are we?" He laughed. "The Headmaster should explain everything soon."

He nodded and turned his attention to the stage, and I copied him, my eyes landing on a man with pure white hair, and wearing white from head to toe. He cleared his throat, and everyone got quiet. "Welcome, everyone to Wixsity, Institute of Magics! My name is Headmaster Raphael, and I am pleased to welcome all first-year students to this wondrous institute!

Now, before we begin handing out class schedules, will every first-year student please stand?" Along with me, there were thirty other first-year students. I stood from my seat, my head held high. The headmaster gazed around at all the students standing, but when his gaze fell on me, his eyes widened, as if he recognized me. I smiled at him and he nodded his head, then lifted his hand, and everyone sat down. "Well, there seems to be a fine fair share of first years. Now, I shall begin by explaining the rules, then hand everyone line up to receive your schedules.

Firstly, curfew starts promptly at ten o'clock sharp unless I have summoned you into my office.

Second, no one is allowed outside the Institute after curfew for your safety.

Third, do not, at any time, practice your magic outside of school grounds without supervision. It is dangerous as we do not know what trickery or foul magic may be at play.

Finally, do not use magic against your classmates at any time. The sole exception to this rule is when you are in battle class. Does everyone understand and accept these rules?" "YES, SIR!" Everyone yelled and the Headmaster smiled. "Excellent. I expect great things from you all. Ah, one more thing. The library opens from seven o'clock in the morning and closes at ten o'clock at night.

Please use your time wisely, practicing your magic, and honing your skills and knowledge. That being said, will everyone please come to the stage to receive their class schedules?" Every student walked single file to the stage and received their schedule with a "thank you, Headmaster." I smiled and said thank you nicely, and returned to my seat, looking over my classes.

1. Magical training/Discovering and training with your main Element
Twelve o'clock-one o'clock

2. Bonding with your Magical Animal
Two o'clock-three o'clock

3. The Dark side of magic/Forbidden spells Three-thirty-four o'clock

6. History of Elements

I stared in wonder at my schedule, realizing what was doing to happen from here on. I wanted to squeal out in happiness, but I retained myself. I still couldn't believe all of this! I'm actually going to train and practice magic! This is definitely doing to be one interesting and exciting school year! I thought to myself with a smile.
