Chapter 1: Kelly Throws a Bonfire
Courtney's POV
"You know what we should do?" Lizzie suggested, breaking the silence of the circle.
The six of us had all been sitting sleepover style in a small circle away from the bonfire, our parents, and my older brother Kyle, just talking, or sitting in silence. Depends on the moment, really.
Kelly's parents had set this up for us. Kelly always had the first bonfire of the summer at her house. It was the first full day of summer for us, school had only ended yesterday. All of us couldn't be as happy about that as we were. Besides, even though we live in a small town in the Midwest, our summers are the best they could be. We've taken trips out of the state, gone to theme parks and water parks here, even gone to the greatest mall in the U.S. (in my opinion that is!)
Another little date I should mention: it had been three weeks since we sent that letter to One Direction, thanking them for patching up this almost broken friendship the six of us had shared.
"Well?" Lizzie asked us, a little impatience ridden in her voice. I could understand why. None of us had answered her question from earlier anyway. She pulled out a ponytail and put her dark hair up in a ponytail so it didn't fall in her eyes.
"No, we don't know, Lizzie. Tell us, will you?" Ana said, staring at the ground, speaking in a plain boring voice, probably trying to make us smile. And it worked. We all burst out laughing, causing our parents to glance over. We went silent, but when they looked away we started laughing again.
"Wow, Ana. Trying to be formal?" Simone, the youngest of our group, asked. Simone was another girl in our group, Lucy's, younger sister. But Simone was cool, so we let her stay when we hung out.
"She was probably reading something that caused that. Something about the Russian Grand Duchess that you got your name from?" Lucy asked with a laugh, sitting up and dusting herself off quickly. "You've read that book twice now, right?" She asked her as she got up to get something to drink.
"What? Oh, no. Just once. But I was trying to make you laugh. Gosh!" Ana rolled her eyes with a small laugh as Lucy came back with a glass of lemonade.
"Obviously, it worked, Anastasia," I added into the conversation with a smile. Ana rolled her eyes, hearing her full name. Besides, she was the only child in her house. The whole Grand Duchess thing would have worked better if she had a few sisters and a brother...but I'm getting off topic. "It's true, we all know it."
"Yes, yes we do." Kelly smiled, pushing up her glasses. She glanced around at all of us, and there was a small silence that came over our little circle.
Finally, Lizzie broke it again. "Anyway...why don't we sing something?"
Kelly shrugged. "I don't know...besides, what would we sing anyway?"
The six of us all spouted out song ideas, none really stood out to me since everyone was talking over each other.
Finally, Simone stuck her head into the center of it. "Hey! I think Lucy's got a good idea." We all turned our attention to Lucy.
"Why not Moments?" She asked all of us.
Ah, Moments. That was probably our favorite song to sing as a group. It was just so beautiful. Even some of our parents liked it!
"Yeah, let's sing Moments!" I smiled, and everyone else nodded, agreeing.
Lucy began to tap out the beats to the song against the ground. She didn't have to do that for long though. I pulled out my iPod and put the song on, quiet enough so only we could hear the music.
When the lads began to sing, mainly Liam, since he had a solo first, I began to sing softly along. The other girls joined in, smiling. "Shut the door, turn the light off. I wanna be with you; I wanna feel your love. I wanna lay beside you, I cannot hide this, even though I try."
All of us continued on through the song, smiling widely as we sang. But we all couldn't hold in a laugh when we got to the bridge and half of us forgot the lyrics, to our disappointment. Ana exclaimed, "No! I forgot the lyrics!" Then she hit her head on the ground lightly, not hurting herself but making a point. None of us could hold in a laugh as we continued singing, smiles on our faces.
When the song ended, we all smiled at each other. "That was fun," Lucy said with a grin.
"Yeah, it was. S'mores, anyone?" Kelly offered.
"Sure, Kelly. Just make sure I don't have to sit by Kyle at the fire," I responded with another laugh. The other's joined in as we pushed ourselves off the ground and onto our feet before walking over to the fire to begin eating our S'mores.

Later on, the six of us had returned to our little sleepover style circle. Ana, Kelly and I were still munching on another S'mores, smiling.
"You know what else we should do?" Simone asked us, as I swallowed a bite of the S'more.
"What, Simone?" I asked her, holding my S'mores in the air. "Feed the extra marshmallows to Bailey and Tom?" Bailey and Tom were the two dogs of the neighborhood. Bailey was mine, and Tom was Lucy and Simone's.
"No...." Simone said. "But there is time for that in the future. It's only the beginning of summer, isn't it?"
We all nodded, then Ana spoke up again. "Do we go to my house with my dad and blow up marshmallows in the microwave like old times?" That got more smiles out of all of us.
Simone put her head in her hands and rubbed her face in exhaustion. "Jeez. You really don't know, do you?" We shook our heads. "Flashlight tag! Well, more like flashlight hide and go seek, but you get it right?" We all nodded.
Memories of when we were younger and played this all the time flooded my mind. I smiled. I missed those days. The six of us were all hiding together behind each other's houses, trying to stay hidden from Kyle, who always played as "it".
"Yeah, we haven't played in a while. Plus, it'll be just like old times," Lucy grinned, sitting up. "We haven't played since we were around twelve. Well, at least, I was. Simone, you were ten, I think."
"Let's play then. I'll get Kyle. Kelly, can you get a flashlight?" I asked, standing up.
Kelly nodded. "Oh sure, give me just a second. Don't start until I'm back!" She smiled, and ran inside to get a flashlight.
"Can't start without the flashlight," I mumbled with a grin before walking over toward the fire and to my brother.
Kyle turned to me with a look on my face that showed a bit of annoyance. "What do you want?" He asked me.
"Could you please play flashlight tag with us? We need someone to be "it"," I responded sweetly.
"Why? Don't you think that you're too old?" Kyle raised his eyebrows with a smirk.
"So?"
"You're seventeen," Kyle crossed his arms. "Why would you play at that age?"
"First of all, I'm almost eighteen-" I began, but I was cut off by him again.
"That's what I mean. Aren't you too old?"
"Who cares? What we're doing is having fun. Besides, it was Simone's idea, not mine." I shrugged.
"Ah...it was Simone's idea..." he laughed. "Well, I guess I could play...."
"Thank you!" I exclaimed, as Kelly came outside and brought him the flashlight. The other girls walked over to us as well.
"No problem, little sister. Now, I'm guessing that we're playing cul de sac rules, anything goes?" Kyle asked the six of us.
"Yup. Cul de sac rules. We always play that way," Lucy responded.
Now, cul de sac rules was pretty simple. The five of our families lived on a cul de sac, the only five houses there. When we played cul de sac rules, any lawn on the cul de sac was fair game, so was the street that connected the houses. Anything else was off limits and an automatic out.
"Well then, you'd better run. Thirty seconds starts now!" Kyle gave us a smile, then he closed his eyes and started to count.
The six of us shared a look, then, together, we sprinted off toward Lizzie's house. It was the farthest away from the fire, so we thought it would be the safest.
When we finally arrived at the side of her house, we all peered around the corner, watching Kyle's flashlight beam dart around the backyards as he searched for us. But we didn't make a sound.
Finally, we saw the beam turn the opposite direction, and head off towards the other houses. We sighed in relief. "Safe!" Simone grinned, sitting down on the grass.
"Not for long, we need to keep a sharp eye out," Ana told her, leaning against the wall of the house.
I nodded. "Then we should keep moving, just to make sure we don't get caught and all."
"Yeah," Lizzie agreed. "Come on." She grabbed Simone's arm and pulled her up. The six of us all began walking towards the actual street. When we reached the top of the hill, we heard voices, and saw a car drive off.
All of us went silent, trying to hear what the voices were saying. But all we heard were five male voices as they began getting quieter. By how it was happening, we believed that they were heading to the bonfire.
We all shared a look. We knew we wanted to follow them, to see who they were and why they had come, but we had to get away from Kyle. So we continued around the cul de sac, hiding in the shadows as we walked.
We passed in front of the space between Kelly's house and mine, and in that space we could see the bonfire. Surprisingly, the five men we heard walking toward the fire weren't there.
"You can see they're not there too, right?" I whispered to the others, hoping that I wasn't seeing things.
Everyone else shook their heads. "Wonder where they are..." Lizzie responded quietly.
"Let's just keep going," Lucy told us. We nodded, and continued on towards the house in the opposite side of the cul de sac, which was Ana's. We crouched on the side of the house, watching Kyle's flashlight beam dart around on the opposite side of the cul de sac.
We all stayed as close as possible to the wall, our eyes fixed on the beam. Finally, he turned and walked away from where we were hiding.
When we saw where he was going, we smiled, and spread out, watching the beam disappear. What we didn't notice, however, was that the five people we heard earlier were sneaking up behind us.
"Hello!" One of them said with a British accent, causing us six girls to spin around and face them in surprise. The five of them were standing there, hoods up, except for the one who spoke. He had his hood down, and we could all see his curly hair in the pale moonlight. Most likely, they were trying to scare us. They did a pretty darn good job!
"Where did you come from?" Simone asked, raising her eyebrows. "How'd you get here?"
"Your parents told us you were roaming the backyards, and they told us to come and find you where you were," one of them said. He had a noticeably Irish accent, and was a bit shorter than the other ones that had shown up.
"And they knew exactly where we were, because?" Lucy asked them.
"They could see you when you passed between houses," a third one said, another noticeably British accent, and he sounded like someone I knew very well, like Liam Payne, for example. But that wasn't going to happen, it couldn't be Liam, and the other four, they couldn't be Harry, Louis, Niall and Zayn...could they?
When the man who sounded like Liam made his comment, Lucy sighed, and slapped her forehead while Ana smiled. "I knew we needed to stay in the shadows more often..." she thought out loud. She then turned to the newcomers. "My name's Ana, by the way, and these are my friends."
"I'm Courtney," I heard myself say, specifically to that one who had sounded like Liam. "Hey..."
"I'm Lucy, and this is my younger sister Simone," Lucy said, before motioning to Simone, who just waved, not saying anything else.
"I'm Lizzie," Lizzie greeted the newcomers with a small smile. "Nice to meet you."
"And I'm Kelly," Kelly finished off with another smile. "What are your names?"
The four of them who hadn't put down their hoods did so. Before they even opened their mouths I knew who they were. How could I have been so stupid?
"I'm Niall," the one with the Irish accent said with a grin. Niall Horan...Lucy was probably the happiest girl on the planet.
"I'm Harry," the curly haired one who had spoken first said. Harry Styles. Ana was probably flipping out inside.
"I'm Zayn," said the one in the middle, his hair up slightly with a blond streak in it. Zayn Malik. Kelly's dream guy.
"Hello, I'm Louis," the fourth one said, grinning and unzipping his sweatshirt, revealing a striped shirt. Louis Tomlinson. Oh, Lizzie was probably dancing inside.
Then, the last one spoke up. "And I'm Liam," he said to us. "Nice to meet all of you." It was real. It was Liam Payne.
The six of us were talking to none other than One Direction.
