"If your realise the worth of a dear one when he/she's around, you will never be alone."
-- Pjcutee
There was a time, when he used to be the centre of her universe. She used to care for him more than herself, she used to worship him, she used to love him more than herself. His ego, his arrogance and his obsession of having a wife who would be socially active and elite had made him blind.
He had an arranged marriage with Anika Trivedi, the daughter of his mother's friend. He had to get married to her, all thanks to his Dadi's emotional blackmailing. She had kept ranting that Anika was a gem of a person, and that she would be a perfect daughter in law. So he had to agree.
She was extremely beautiful, no doubt. She was well educated and a girl who would respect the notion of living in a joint family. But his own obsessions for maintaining social status and expectation from her to be what she is not destroyed everything.
Shivaay Singh Oberoi destroyed the life of Shivaay inside him. But that Shivaay wasn't less, he roared after Anika went away from his life.
The Shivaay who loved Anika, started bothering Shivaay Singh Oberoi. Those luxuries started suffocating him. Those elite parties which he liked as those were of his standard, now seemed bullshit.
Her childish habits, her clumsiness, her carelessness that he used to hate was now he missed more than anything. He always expected her to behave like a mature, elite lady but he failed to see that she was mature, but never showed.
Anika was a person who only knew how to spread smiles and make others forget their sorrows. She couldn't walk two steps without stumbling, that made everyone smile. Her naughtiness made everyone smile. Scaring everyone by wearing a ghost mask made everyone smile. Her clumsiness made everyone smile. Her funny hand gestures while taking made everyone smile. Then, how could he forget her habit to sit on the passenger seat of the car with one leg resting on the seat. All of these things used to make him irritated, atleast he used to think like that.
Now, he missed these things, he missed her. Now every thing reminds him of her. His mistake of leaving her is eating him bit by bit.
His family is there with him, but still they are far from him. They had tried their best to stop him from divorcing Anika, but he didn't listen to them. Their relationship with him was not what it used to be and he knew he was solely responsible for this. He hadn't thought that the minute he would enter the mansion, without her, would make him suffocated.
It's been a year since he has met her, talked to her and had a glance of her. From one year he was trying to find her but she had shielded herself from him like he was something poisonous, he thought he actually is. He tried to talk to her mother but She denied because she wanted her daughter to be happy. "You've already destroyed her. Now let her be at peace." Is the answer he gets everytime he tries to know about her.
"It's useless to think about her. Why are you crying now when you never cared for her ? Go, find a girl of your standard and live happily." He heard his Dadi's voice from behind and the bitterness he felt in those words was more powerful than poison.
"Live ! (He chuckled sarcastically ) I won't be able to live without her, because I won't be able to love anyone except her. I realised why her mannerisms and nature irritated me. Because it always captivated my heart like nothing else could do. It used to grab whole of my attention. She captivated my mind and my soul, everything that I had and it used to irritate me when... when I had no control over my self but she had." Shivaay poured his heart out as Dadi's words pained him a lot and his tears denied to stop flowing.
"what if I tell you where she is ?" dadi asked from him, because today for the first time he admitted what his heart held and what he wanted. She knew he realised his mistake truly and suffered enough for that.
Shivaay turned around to look at Dadi and he could see her smiling. He ran towards her with eyes full of hope. She was sitting on the couch and he knelt infront of her, requested her to tell him about Anika.
"But promise me, you would bring her back, with all the rights. You would apologise for your mistake and bring her here proudly, as the eldest daughter in law of mine." Dadi asked from him and he nodded his head frantically. He was not able to hold his excitement to know about her.
"She is in Paris." Dadi started telling him and he listened, picturising her in his mind.
He had waited for her for one long year. But now, standing at the Paris airport, when he is at the distance of few miles from her and the journey is not even an hour long, he is not able to wait. He wants directly to jump to the time when he would see her and hug her tightly, when he would jump, the way she used to do when excited.
He kept asking from the cab driver about how long it would take them to reach the address he has given to him. At a point, the driver was fed up and he had nearly threw him out of the cab. Had the situation been different, SSO would have lashed out at him but today his excitement overpowered his anger.
Shivaay jumped out of the cab and ran towards the small, yet beautiful apartment to see his Jaan. The cab driver shouted in an irritated voice, to ask him to take his suitcase atleast.
Shivaay rang the bell, thrice at a time. He would have broke the door if the door was delayed to be opened for a minute more.
"Where is Anika ?" He shot his question as soon as the door opened and he saw a girl standing infront him. The only thing he could notice was, the girl wasn't his Jaan.
"Don't you have, manners Mr. ? First, you were ringing the bell as if someone is behind to kill you. Secondly, no greetings or something and you're shooting questions at me. You are lucky that Anika isn't at home. She would have killed you for such ill mannerism of yours." The girl was scolding him like a bullet train but he cared the least. All he wanted was to see his Jaan.
"Are you going to stand here whole evening ? Would you mind telling who you are and what are you doing here ?" The girl asked in an annoyed voice seeing him lost in his own world.
"I..actually I want to meet Anika. I'm Shivaay... only Shivaay. " He could manage to say only this, the last line audible only to him.
"I'm Gauri Sharma, Anika's friend as well as her colleague. Come inside, Annie has gone for some work. She'll back in an hour or so. Till then you sit." The girl, Gauri invited him in and went to bring him a cup of coffee.
Both were sipping their coffee with awkward glances and smiles as they had nothing to talk. Shivaay was in his Anika land and Gauri was trying to think if Annie ever mentioned to her about a friend named Shivaay.
The door bell brought them back to the world and Shivaay's heartbeat increased, giving him the signal of her arrival. One year had passed but his Anika sensometer, as Rudra used to define it, never stopped working.
"You know what, these people are completely useless. No sense, no manners, nothing. They don't even know how to talk. Bloody..." He stood up from the sofa as he saw her entering the apartment, clearly annoyed about something and cursing someone.
She stopped talking as soon as her chocolate brown orbs landed on him whereas, he was busy taking in her appearance and how much she has changed. The girl standing infront of him wasn't his Anika. This girl was completely different.
Her long, black hair that she used to flick happily, were now tied in a pony tail. The girl who used to wear only a loose long kurta and jeans was now wearing a formal one piece that ended just above her knees. A simple yet elegant watch adorning her wrist and high heels... something that she used to hate the most. "These high class ladies don't need ladders to clean their roof tops as long as they are wearing heels." She used to make fun of girls wearing high heels by saying this kind of remarks.
"She has changed, completely." He thought. She looked exactly what he wanted her to be, in the past. But now, he felt pain in his heart seeing her like this. She wasn't the same jhalli Anika he fell in love with.
"He..hello !" Shivaay greeted her and he was stuttering, for the first time in his life. He marched forward towards her but his over excitement messed up everything as he stumbled over the carpet and his hand touched the flower vase, causing it to fall and break into pieces.
"What the hell is this, Mr. Oberoi ? And what do you think you're doing here ?" Anika questioned in an angry yet low voice.
"I... I came to... urghh actually you.. I'm sorry." He fumbled for words and ended up saying sorry.
"You came here to waste my time or what ? I'm not at all interested in talking to you or seeing your face. So leave my house." Anika ignored his sorry, and asked him to leave the house.
"Anika I know I was at fault. I know I ruined everything just because of my stupid obsessions but believe me.. I've realised my mistake. Please forgive me Anika.." Shivaay said and Anika looked away from him, to hide her emotions. Gauri stood there, clueless of everything.
"Mr. Oberoi, there's nothing I can do now. Everything is over. Let bygones be bygones. And you really don't need to apologise as you taught me how to behave, how to live. So it's fine." Anika replied calmly but he could sense the taunt in her words.
He never felt so helpless as he did at this point. She changed so much, and he was responsible for all this. His mistakes has made her lifeless. He stared at her with pleading eyes but she stood there, unaffected.
Shivaay left her apartment as he couldn't take her hatred. Anika went to her room and broke down into tears. She was strong, but infront of the world only. Behind the walls of her room, she was fragile.
She cried her heart till she was satisfied and then, went to have a cup of coffee. Her head ache was not ready to leave her and she wanted to bang it in the wall. To top that off, Gauri's questions irritated her even more.
At last, she ended up shouting in frustrations and told Gauri about her Ex husband and Why he divorced her. Gauri was equally angry at Shivaay but didn't want to step into Anika's matter. It was better if she handled it alone but she would be there to support her for sure.
Sun rays disturbed Anika's sleep and she woke up to have a warm shower. If she was the old Anika, she would have snuggled into the duvet and slept. But this Anika was different. She was punctual, workaholic, rude according to her colleagues and those who working under her supervision, a cleanliness freak and... mature, that he wanted her to be.
She stepped out of the room, all ready to hit the office but she didn't know that a shock was going to hit her. She saw her Ex husband setting the dining table and her best friend chatting with him happily.
She marched towards them, clearly annoyed at the way both were acting as if they didn't recognise her presence.
"What are you doing here, Mr. Oberoi ? Didn't I ask you to leave ? ( to Gauri ) and you, stop smiling like a fool. And... god !! What's with your manners ? My poor dining table !!" Anika whined as she saw the table completely messed up.
"It's ok jaan, it's normal to mess up while eating. Don't worry." Shivaay said, as if nothing happened and Anika shut her eyes to control her anger.
"Get out of my house." She said and showed him the door.
"He received a call and smirked seeing the caller ID. He recieved the call and put the phone on speaker.
"Hello mom, all good ?" He asked from the person at the other end of the phone and sat on the chair, with his one foot resting on the chair. Anika looked at him and was shocked seeing his antics. He was not SSO, she thought. Her pupils dilated more as she recognised the person's voice who was talking to him, her mother.
"Mom, your daughter is too rude. Instead of welcoming me, she asked me to get out. The phone is on speaker, why don't you talk to her ?" He said and smirked while looking at her.
"Anika, dear he has some work in Paris. So I thought why should he stay in a hotel when your apartment is there. Take care of him ok. Bye beta." Anija heard her mom's voice and her shock turned to confusion. "Wasn't this woman getting mad over him a few days back, for destroying her daughter's life ?" Anika thought and huffed in frustration.
"Would you like some fruit salad, Jaan ?" Shivaay asked from Anika as he picked up a piece of Apple from the fruit salad and that too, with his hand and not with fork. "This man is not who divorced her." Her mind shouted and she made an ewww face when he dropped the fruits on the floor.
"Stop making my apartment a dump yard, Oberoi." Anika yelled and marched towards him making him jump from his seat and run away.
Anika kept running behind Shivaay as he kept making mess everywhere he went while Gauri sipped her green tea. "Agreeing to help Jiju wasn't a bad idea. I'll be getting this free entertainment more often." Gauri smiled widely at her own stupid thoughts and clapped her hands silently.
Anika got fed up of Shivaay and finally left for office, to avoid him. At evening, she returned home and what welcomed her was a messy hall, with Shivaay and Gauri sitting on sofa watching a...horror movie ? About Gauri, it was fine but how on earth it could be possible that this Action movie lover is watching horror movie.
It wasn't enough, popcorns were scattered on the sofa, on the floor and a few on Shivaay's lap. All in all, he looked like a dustbin, a handsome one.
"Listen Mr, this house is mine so stop making it messy all the time. What are you trying to do ? To irritate me ? Aren't you here for work ? Go do it. Why are you sitting here, doing all this CHILDISH STUFF ?" Anika said and he understood that the last line was meant to taunt him. He was ready to take everything she throws at him but he wasn't ready to let her go.
He wanted her to be what she used to be, A jhalli Anika who used to smile always, Anika who loved to irritate him, Anika who never followed any rules and loved to mess everything. He wants her to be her old self and irritate him like hell. For that he would do anything.
Another two months were really complicated for Anika. With Shivaay around, she couldn't concentrate on anything. She hated to admit but she was melting. She was melting when he behaved so good. She was melting when he used to do those silly things like stealing important files of her work, pulling her hair clutcher to set her hair locks free, eating ice cream just to tease her. She was melting when she used to see him wearing a minion printed Pyjama and bright yellow t-shirt, something he used to hate the most.
She knew he was trying all this to woo her, to prove to her that he had changed. But it wasn't her fault when she thought about getting heartbroken again. It's difficult for a person to trust someone again who have bore the pain given by their love once.
They had been invited for a party and Gauri convinced Shivaay to accompany them. Outwardly, Anika denied but inwardly she wanted to see if Shivaay is still that obnoxious Shivaay Singh Oberoi.
How much Anika denies but she hated the host, Mrs. Kapoor. She was a fashion designer and Anika, was not at all in good terms with her. Reason of being in bad terms with Mrs. Kapoor was her extremely obnoxious nature and bragging. Anika would have never attended this party if her boss hadn't insisted.
Everything was good until, a waiter stumbled because of the carpet and the drinks fell on Mrs. Kapoor's extremely expensive shoes. The lady wasn't that kind to notice that it could've happened with anyone.
"Oh you idiot ! What have you done ? Cheap, middle class people like you can't do even one thing properly. Even if you work your whole life as my slave your won't be able to pay back to me for spoiling my shoes." Mrs. Kapoor shouted at top of her voice, gaining everyone's attention and Anika's blood boiled listening to her words.
She was about to slap the already scared waiter but someone grabbed her hand. Surprisingly, Anika was a little away from them and she was surprised to see Shivaay trying to calm Mrs. Kapoor. But that old lady wasn't ready to listen to anyone.
"Relax, Mrs. Kapoor. It was an accident. It could've happened with anyone." Shivaay spoke in extremely calm voice but the old lady was too angry to listen to him.
Shivaay's patience was almost giving up when she started shouting at him as well. But he didn't want to destroy his hard work to woo his wife just because of this oldy.
"Who are you by the way ? Who invited you here that you are talking to me that way ? Bloody..." Mrs. Kapoor was bashing Shivaay but her words died in her mouth as she felt her face getting wet.
Shivaay's lips curved up in a wide smile whereas Gauri spat out the juice she was having. Shivaay saw his bagad billi standing there with her angry mode switched on. Oh ! How much he missed her tadi. This reaction was what he was dieing to get from her and it finally happened. This Oldy Kapoor wasn't that bad, he guessed or to say cupid in disguise.
"How dare you ruin my designer dress, you stupid girl ?" Mrs. Kapoor looked like a Bull, ready to fight. But his lioness was two steps ahead and she emptied another glass of juice, now on that Oldy's face.
Mrs. Kapoor shrieked loudly and pulled her own hair in frustration. "Dare you mess with him again." Anika said and left from the party venue. Shivaay bit inner side of his cheeks to control his laugh. He passed a tissue to Mrs. Kapoor and literally vanished from there. Mrs. Kapoor looked at Gauri who just gave a shivery smile and *ting... Gauri too, vanished.
"Ani ! Ani stop. Please jaana stop." Shivaay shouted to stop his billi but she kept walking. Finally he pulled her towards himself by catching her wrist.
"I got you." He said and grinned like a fool getting a smack on his chest.
"Why didn't you tell that oldy that you are The Shivaay Singh Oberoi ? How dare she talk to you like that ?" Anika asked from him and he could guess from her expressions that she was mentally cursing the lady. His expressions turned serious and he cupped her face in his cold hands.
"That 'The Shivaay Singh Oberoi' snatched the most precious possession of mine from me. So he had to be thrown away. I came here mere as Shivaay, his Jhalli Anika's Shivaay, her Billu, her bagad billa." He said and caressed her cheek that grew warm and scarlet red due to his touch.
She pulled herself out of his hold and started walking ahead. "I swear, Anika, If you didn't turn today, this Shivaay would leave, forever. I would kill this Shivaay. Neither Shivaay Singh Oberoi nor Shivaay would be able to live without your naughtiness. Shivaay needs his Jhalli Anika to live his life to the fullest. Shivaay Singh Oberoi too needs his Jhalli Anika to irritate him and make him pull his hair in frustration, it makes him feel better. It makes him feel alive, Anika. Both are incomplete without you. I'll d.." Shivaay said everything while falling on his knees and closed eyes.
He felt his lips captured in a hard yet passionate kiss and he fell on the road due to the sudden force of someone hugging him. His back touched the road, with her on top of him. He didn't feel the pain of falling down so harshly. All he could feel was her lips on his and her arms around his neck.
"You don't have the right to die. Your life is mine, only mine. Shivaay is mine, and SSO is also mine. Only I have the right to kill you daily with my antics. Keep that in that egoistic brain of SSO and silly brain of Shivaay." Anika said while he nodded his head smiling widely and pulled her in for another kiss, a gentle one this time.
They heard claps, hoots and whistles but who cares when they are together.
