Chapter 5
Bern pondered what she overheard when commotion from outside caught her ears. From a window, she could see Jacob running away and directing people to exit the school, Brittney and Belladonna heading to the source, and Kale being the cause, glowing white and kicking shockwaves around the area.
The girl grabbed as much sports equipment from the gym and took the elevator. By the time she got down, Kale had transformed into a dragon headed humanoid with a white halo descending down on his body and exhaling negative waves. She took one of her pills while finding Ming.
Blizzard and Biome rushed in trying to restrain him with their ice breath and mole claws respectively. His fist shockwave broke through the former's ice. When she tried to get in close quarters, he flipped her around and throat chopped her neck.
The latter dug deep into the ground, rescuing her and tunneled under all of Kane's fist strikes. The dragon head responded with a stomp that erupted the two out of the ground. Biome pushed her ally out of the way of him slipping past her metal claw swipes and striking her in the gut.
"They aren't going to last much longer!" She ran in the line of fire and juggled the equipment in the air before swinging all of them in rapid succession with the tennis racket and the baseball. Each one pushed Kale back while Biome grabbed Blizzard to heal her throat.
Her efforts didn't last long as Kale kicked the soccer ball and shot it into her chest.
"You're not superhuman, or a beast, or a monster," as she clutched her fingers, brought to her knees. "You're just an overconfident has-been who disappointments everyone! Your father, your friends, and yourself!"
He hurled all of the equipment back at her when Ming tackled her, saving them both.
"Kale, stop this! Fight me instead!"
Despite her protests, Bern witnessed all three of her friends get continuously knocked down, beaten, and tossed aside like nothing. The overwhelming stress mixed positive and negative chaos energy around her before she snapped.
Her eyes opened to the stature of a hooded individual with horns.
Bern blinked. "Who are you?"
"Someone who sought strength, and lost everything and everyone because of it."
Bern found herself surrounded by images of newspapers, articles, tabloids and paparazzi. No matter how hard she tried to push them away, they always stalked every fiber of her being. It was fruitless fighting it alone.
"Can your power ignite passion in the most agonizing, and pessimistic of souls?"
Bern thought about it and slapped herself in the face, twice.
"If I can't move forward, I'll always be stuck like this, won't I?" She shoved her medal in front of her. "Give this thing power or whatever like the others did. I can't beat him alone, and neither can they."
He nodded, tapped it, and the medal was remodeled into a medallion with different functionalities. All she cared about was finding the right one to give her what she wanted.
"Good luck, young warrior."
Bern returned to reality and found Ming blown back from Kale's fist and kicked shockwaves while Biome and Blizzard struggled to get up. The martial artist white aura flowed around him, winding back. Bern knew exactly what he was going to do.
"Stop it! Dad said to never use that technique unless you completed your training!"
He almost heed to her words until he moved. His voice begging for the person to take the power back fell on deaf ears as he crumbled on the floor before rising up, laughing like he was another person. Her superpowered peers had enough energy to protect Ming, but Kale laughed, striking the air with a rapid fist with the air pressure of a dragon.
Bern ran to her trio of friends and pushed them out the way, withstanding the full force of the blast with the medallion even as it slowly blew the other ones behind.
"I pushed you all too much and ran away without doing anything to solve my problems! I won't lose you all to whatever psycho out there is using you! Chaos Evolution!"
Her body glowed green, erupting with the blazing fury of a volcano that completely quelled the wind. Bern walked forward. Her short dark brown hair lengthened to near her ears, in place of her cap was a headband, her green jersey changed into an emerald jersey with a burning sports logo on the back and a tiny logo in the front. She developed green gloves similar to the other two, except with wristbands. Her shorts became a green skirt with pockets. The energy from her legs invigorated her while her sneakers took on a new form.
"Skirts aren't my thing," prompting Biome to make some adjustments to her outfit and make them shorts. "But what am I?"
Blizzard jolted around, inspecting her body. "Hmm, bombastic transformation," touching her face and blowing off her heat. "Alright, I dub you Bombastic Blaze."
"Huh?"
Biome tapped her on the shoulder. "Can't use our real names so others don't come after us. Just go with it?"
"Blaze huh. Kinda has a nice ring to it."
"How did you survive the dragon fist?"
Blaze yawned. "The real Kale practiced every chance to use that technique to prove he was a true martial artist! Whatever you are is a cheap puppet who can't even muster his true power!" She whispered something to the girls before going in solo until the two were face to face.
Kale struck her with a barrage of kicks and punches she evaded and blocked with ease until he hurled a light punch that blew her back, followed by a one-inch punch that blasted her to the ground, rolling past all the others. And yet, she landed on her feet and knees at the equipment.
He launched a series of air bullets at them, and Blaze grabbed a tennis racket, smacking every ball and bat right back at him and shielding the rest of them from harm before leaping up in the air and kneeing him in the chest.
"I'll stop everything you throw at me!"
"Then stop this," stomping open a large section of the ground and drop kicking it towards everyone there.
Her tennis racket ignited with vigor as she rocketted to her new teammates.
"Overheat Smash!" She slammed the chunk of mass back at her mutated friend with the ferocity of a burning comet. Kale concentrated all of his chakra into two mighty punches to blast it back with a force of air, barely pushing it back.
"Now!"
Blizzard emerged right under Kale's arms with cryokinetic air and mole shaped arms.
"Blizzard-"
"Um, Mole-"
"-Impact," fiercely freezing and carving a hole through his chest. The mass fell back where he broke it as he reverted back to human form, and the three teenagers exchanged a thumbs up.
He dusted himself up and got up. "Did I become a monster?"
Blaze sprung him up after absorbing his negative energy. "A friend of yours said she was worried you had a lot of stress, so she called us to rid that stuff in case you got corrupted. Take a load off, it's been a long day."
"Bern did that for me? After I blamed her. Maybe I need a break after all." He bowed, thanking the three of them and headed off.
Their leader punched the sky. "And we did it without the cops showing up!"
"What about Ming," the blue one asked.
Blaze called him over. "Secret?"
He slipped his fingers over his mouth. "Sides' you do a way better job than the police."
They spotted Bella's former group of allies squealing in fear.
"Oh god, I could get turned into one of those things?" The waves started corrupting her as a large snake nearby slithered on top of her, further accelerating the situation.
The trio, though tired, were about to step in when a warrior flew into the sky, blasting the snake off. None of them were sure to think about the black armor with gold highlights, a wolf shaped helmet with red eyes, obsidian wings and jet boosters underneath similar metal plated legs. There two arms of various shapes: one akin to an animal's mouth, the other with a twin bayonet gauntlet attached to the robotic hands.
"Who are you supposed to be," Blaze asked while Blizzard geeked out over the design.
"Call me, hmmm, Nighthound. I need to bring you all in for questioning," raising a hand with a sphere of black energy. "The chaos energy in all of you is concerning for the future of this town."
Blaze sucked her teeth. "Um, we just saved someone!"
Biome agreed, swapping out the mole for a nearby eagle for keen sight. "He's got a police badge on him."
Blizzard raised her hand. "Is that night like nighttime or like a medieval knight?"
The other two questioned her priorities while he answered it was the former. They agreed for her to stop Bella's friend. However, Nightshroud easily kicked Blaze away and breezed past Biome. Blizzard reached the girl as he did and the two attacks collided, blowing each other back. The two fought to suck the sinister power out of her, with him winning out.
"Whoa."
"Now," firing a black ball away from them, forcing a snake headed person to jump out. "You're under arrest for the manipulation and subjugation of a minor with intent of malicious behavior."
Blaze's hair flared up. "She was the one who turned Kale? Wolf guy," rising up and cracking her knuckles before flying towards Gorgon, "back me up!"
She rushed in with a flying drop kick. Gorgon's hair ensnared her arms, and caught her hands. The older woman tilted her head while her extra appendages dove down to devour her. Nighthound's bayonet slashed some of them apart, forcing the culprit to bounce off the teen girl, flipping underneath his blast.
"Volgo, now!"
Blizzard and Biome found the anthropomorphic chimp skeeting to Blaze with a volley of blasts. She deflected them all away with her racket, one of which smacked into Nighthound before he could apprehend Gorgon. The monkey caught the snake headed lady and flew far away.
The dog moniker warrior grunted and turned the girls, raising his fist at Blaze. Blizzard stretched out her arms in front of her friend.
"We aren't your enemy. We're trying to stop those guys just as much as you are. I've worked with the cops before. Let's not have some weird back and forth if we're on the same side, right?"
Nighthound hesitated and pointed his bladed arm at the two, retracting them.
"Officers", pressing the button on their armor. "ETA for suburban to populated areas of Urbanville. Targets are the monkey man from before and snaked haired feminine humanoid," walking away with a message to the red one.
"That conversation will come one way or another," addressing the trio before flying off.
Bella's ex-posse fled from any more potential chaos, leading the girls and Ming alone to revert back to human.
"So now we have to deal with an evil monkey, a Medusa chick, and a police dog. Can this day get any weirder?"
"Actually, there's one more thing," Brittney addressed.
At her house, the other girls and Ming bore witness to Blaze rushing on the wheel as hard as she could with the mole joining her. The time machine started to spark, expanding to about a third of the circumference before she gave up. Biome and Blizzard tried to add their own powerset, but were barely able to get their hand through, giving up instead of losing an arm in the time stream.
"We'd probably need to get much stronger before we can pull something like this off," their leader claimed. "So Bern, what are you gonna do?"
" I'm gonna join you guys. As for sports I don't know. I think I want to just do it for fun for a bit. Besides," thinking about Gorgon, " if someone's targeting athletes to turn into monsters, then you girls are gonna need all the help you can get."
"We're gonna need it," Brittney admitted, sticking her hand forward. "Sisterhood?"
Bella argued they could have a cuter name but Bern shrugged, prefering to keep it simple. The two ladies joined in and lifted it up together. "Sisterhood!"
Another hand joined them in the air. "And one brother ally guy who can't do much."
Bern laughed, kissing him on the cheek. "We're gonna need you for a lot of excuses."
Ming rolled his eyes. "I'll do my best."
The other two laughed while at his lair, Volgo was in a better mood to Gorgon's intrigue despite the numerous injuries he sustained from the police.
"Humans, technology, and animals together can create some amazing marvels. Volgo needs a device to find the perfect targets. That blue hair girl mentioned something about certain beings holding ounces of energy stronger than others. Volgo must uncover how to do so," beginning to dismantle most of the materials in the base.
"There's no need to waste all that hard work. I know someone that can get you exactly what you need."
