Chapter 2
Brittney spent the night falling asleep and waking up reimagining the events that transpired. There were a few articles citing her alter-ego on some websites. Granted only three people she knew saw her, but the police would definitely tell the mayor and the higher ups about the situation.
At the same time, Belladonna's heart was racing every second. The fight between Blizzard and Volgo was equally exciting and frightening, but as the fight concluded, she was the only one to see a being gazing down from the heavens, joined by animals roaring. She tightly squeezed her octopus plushie.
"Cepha, we've got a promise to make."
The sun was up at Britt's next awakening, who decided to search again for any articles until she came upon a social media link. Not willing to put too much information out there, she made a separate account and logged into there to get to the link.
"Bella?" The video playing showed her classmate's recording followed by some of the events that transpired followed by her face.
"Hey everyone. Looks like someone other than the cops found a way to fight anyone turned into a monster. Hey Ms. um-what's-her-name-again? Wizard?" Bella began breakdancing. "Wanna meet me for a interview? There's a lot I want to ask you."
Britt pouted. "It's Blizzard!"
"As for everyone else, don't forget to donate to these charities," as multiple links started to sprout up, rather lazily to the point multiple ones started to overlap against one another. She clicked on one.
"Oh for Marine life," recalling the dangers the chaos rays could have on the animals. "When I'm rich, I'm down."
Her dad knocked on the door before opening up and hugged her. "I heard what happened at the school, are you," before she rapidly yelled she was fine. "That's a relief. Please be careful."
"Enough about me! How'd the first day go?"
"Well not too bad. Even the mayor came in."
"Wow! That's so cool! I'll tell my fri-oh right," realizing she only had Bella. "I'll make more friends and trick them into coming."
Blake sighed. "I don't mind you spreading the word but don't phrase it like that. Anyway, get out of here, I gotta go early too."
She rushed out to school, almost considering transforming to get there early and ended up tripping on a garbage can and riding it down the hill to school. There she found Bella.
"You're alive! I was so worried, what happened to you yesterday?"
"Well I got lost in the chaos and I hid behind the police until that supergirl arrived. What did you think of her?"
"Hmm. I'm glad she saved us, though her outfit could use some work."
Britt looked down in shame. "But I saw your post. Why do you want to meet her?"
Bella sighed. "It's personal. But, she might be able to help me to save someone close to me. And maybe the whole world ," giggling. "I hope."
"Whoa," wondering if she should tell her before shaking off the thought of getting her friend wrapped in this mess. "By the way, I don't know if you want, but after school, there's a shop in the city we can go too later if you want."
"Sure, if the other girls say yes, let's all go together." Britt raised a finger given Ming's treatment but the bell forced the two upstairs.
Throughout the day, the redhead wondered the "why" beyond the reasoning. When lunchtime approached, Bella got grabbed by her entourage from before to sit down with a more popular crowd that quickly got her attention, leaving her alone. Struggling to see if she could find someone else like Bern or Ming who at the very least knew her, the sight of the guy with the robotic dog piqued her interest.
Then she bumped into a blonde teen, quickly apologizing and receiving to the floor and snickers from her friends.
"Nice one." Britt tried to rise, only to get smacked down. The chaos energy in her seemed to be stable despite the triggering memories of this happening before, but tried to escape her predicament. However the friends of the bully surrounded her, while the girl, Ditch, dumped her phone on her body. She tried to kick them off like she was Blizzard but hoped someone would intervene.
"Let's see if she turns so we can get out of school early." Britt got pulled up by the back of her hair and started hitting back, but was too far. Eventually she looked around, finding the dog guy, Bern, Ming, and Bell, yelling for help.
"Teacher!"
"Britt?" Bella was about to help when her trio of friends pulled her away. "Ditch and her group has always been like this."
"And?"
"You wanna get in her way now?"
"No way, if she can't help herself, that's her fault. Not you."
Bella wondered what to do when Britt failed her limbs and ended up striking Ditch enough to free herself, but the bully's friends pushed her around and knocked the scanner out of her pocket. She tried to grab it only for Ditch to recover with more rage in her face, which earned more attention in the cafeteria.
Bern and Ming got blocked from the growing crowd from interfering, not helped by Bella's friends and other groups pulling out their phones and laughing as the plucky redhead got her head smashed onto the table. Trying to elbow Ditch wasn't working, and the brawley girl lifted her by her shirt check.
"Hurry up and turn already Strawberry Shortcake, or I'll pound you into next week!"
Britt closed her eyes as the fist rose down when Ditch yelled out in pain. She opened her eyes to see her fellow teen dunked in milk, and a metal tray falling off her head. She took it well.
"WHICH ONE OF YOU DID THAT YOU MOTHERF-" and someone kicked the tray into her face, freeing Britt from her grasp. The ones who knew Britt's name were stunned to see the person responsible.
"The guy ensures you idiots don't cause another monster attack at the school."
"You're," coughing and feeling a dog licking her wounds and soothing the energy in her body.
"Call me Jacob. Heal, sit back and watch the show." He adjusted his goggles and caught the tray when Ditch's friends followed her orders to beat him up.
"Calculating, angle of self-humiliation, got it." Jacob thrusted a chicken leg into one of the bully's mouth, causing him to choke and lending himself easy for the dark-skin recluse to trip him into another ally. Next, he swiped and hurled a banana into the eyes of Ditch's female enforcer, tripping them into a trio of defeated jerks.
The crowd was stunned and Britt heard reactions that Jacob of all people were doing something as he flipped off the table and squashed grapes into juice falling into the eyes of two more before dropping kicking them to the floor. Only Ditch was left.
Jacob swung his fingers back. "Come on. Or do I need a red cloth for a redneck like you?"
"You little!" Ditch rushed at him, closing her eyes when he kicked a milk can to her face and succeeded in smacking him in the face and his metal arm off in one hit
Laughing as she was about to strike him again to ensure that he wouldn't get up, Jacob started laughing maniacally as dark miasma forced around his face while lifting himself up from falling.
Ditch only saw the terror of a demon's face swinging with the tray his mouth ready to devour her whole. The whole cafeteria gasped as he stopped an inch from contacting her face.
He took a deep breath. "Unlike some people, I know how to control myself," as he and Britt were first hand witnesses to the terrified bully's expressions.
One of the deans there from the beginning yelled out for him. He simply kicked Ditch into him and tossed one final tray at Bella's group, cracking their phone with scornful eyes.
"Student or staff, anyone who plays bystander while someone suffers is scum in my book!"
He placed his prosthetic arm back on but used his good hand to lift Britt up by his shoulder. "You good?"
"Yeah, I think so," smiling as her eyes closed.
The next time they opened, she found herself in the infirmary with Bella and Ms. Marge watches over her, receiving a hug from the teen, grateful.
"So me getting saved by a cool guy wielding a nothing tray wasn't a happy daydream?"
Their teacher nodded. "He brought you to the nurse's office and explained everything to me, but he's in the principal's office right now."
"Ah no," having no experience with a bystander helping her but much training in receiving punishment for being a casualty, she rushed out, ignoring their protests until needing their help to find it, getting there right in time to see Jacob and a bruised up Ditch discussing with the principal.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't expel you right now!"
Britt was about to defend him when he played a recording of everything, including Ditch's comments much to the group's shock and horror.
"If I didn't neutralize her selfish attempts to turn someone into a Desperian, imagine how much negative energy would fight and break out? I could always call the police and let them know you expelled a gifted student for de-escalating a situation or send it to the PTA," with a smile once the principal shrieked at the ramifications of losing his job.
Everyone in the room heard police sirens and news cars swarmed the school. Jacob yawned and sipped tomato juice. "It's okay, I already uploaded it online. Well Ditch, I'd say it was nice knowing you, but we both know that isn't true," walking away.
Jacob closed the door behind him, surprised to see them all. "Oh Britt, was it? You sure you should be up right now?"
"I'm good, I think." His dog began licking her head, lessening the pain of the wounds. "Your dog can heal people?"
"Well sort of," sweating a little. "I trained it to loosen and massage people's physical wounds and feast off some of the rays' power if it gets too much."
"Wow, that's so cool. Nothing I've made ever comes close to that."
Marge noticed his awkward movements as he brushed it off until his direction went to Bella's voice.
"You've never helped out anyone like that before. Why now?"
"Three reasons. One, I've always hated that type of behavior but I have obligations soI don't react as often as I should. Two, another incident back to back wouldn't boost morale at all. And three," lowering his eyebrows at her. "I despise bullies and the tools who enforce their behavior."
The teacher and young teen could sense the tense emotions from both of them as he walked by.
"And Bella, one more thing. If you couldn't even save me, or help out a friend, what makes you think you could ever save anyone?"
Bella's rage and sadness were on full display but the rebuttal couldn't emerge.
"Brittney, Kenn-I mean Ms. Marge, I'll see you tomorrow. But, I'm not sure how to say this, but with the stressful mood, I conclude you should head home or avoid being around here."
Marge sighed, pointing out the grades and work she still had to do as a teacher.
Britt whispered to her. "Did something happen between those two?"
"It's a long story. See," when Bella asked her not to say anything.
"It's nothing important," running after Jacob. The two followed all the way outside where Jacob and Bern told them all to run. The cops blasted at a swarm of mon-ku firing their own missiles at the cops. Britt was about to transform when Jacob pushed her and Bella out of the way of a blast. Bern grabbed a rifle and propelled into a duo.
Volgo's laugh alerted them all to his presence. "Even you can't stand my prowess. Now my new friend, capture our target!"
The ground in front of the school burst open and a giant mole drilled out. It's hands grabbed Bella and bounced from the school walls to other buildings. Volgo rode on top as Bella screamed for help. The cops began a pursuit while the heroine wondered what the anthropomorphic monkey's goals were.
