9. Twinny Twin
Amber POV
Her sister was going on with AKA and she was going on with MAX. Neither of them told Lark because they knew she would act some type of way. Maybe Lark thought Jade was interested in nothing.
Imagine her surprise whenever Jade crossed.
If she made it.
"These chicas want everything but blood for all this. I'm saying!"
They were laid out in their bunks, both finishing their applications. Already her letters of recommendation were in, and now she had to finish her essay and application, which was pretty easy.
"You got this Jade, why wouldn't they want you?"
"You have it easier than me because Lark." She let out a groan. "And they may mark it against me!"
"What? Because your sister?"
"Yes!" Jade jumped out of the bed. "Maybe I did not think this through."
Jade paced the floor back and forth.
"You're overthinking right now."
"Am I?" Jade pulled off her curly wig and scratched her matted-down braids. The glam girl looked like she escaped prison. "Everyone knows Lark is our sister. Maybe the AKAs think I was rejected from MAX, that's why I am into them."
"Why would they-"
"Or they think I'm not serious about AKA. I mean, I did go to Delta Rush as well."
"And so? I went to them with you. What does that say about me?"
"Says we're confused."
They both laughed. She went over to put an arm around her sister.
"Look, I was not too happy when you said you were not doing MAX with me, but then I get it. We're twins, but we're so different. Do your own thing. Like you said, you're already majoring in the same thing as Lark. This is your one time to do something independently. The AKAs would be lucky to get you."
"Aaaw, twinny twin twin, I love you!" Jade squeezed her tight. "We are gonna be the baddest AKA and MAX twin sister combo to date!"
She laughed. "I think the only. Come on, let's finish this and we will read over each other's applications."
Once their material was sent off, next they had to wait.
She wondered if the hot girl from RUSH would apply. Would she make it? Would she be on line with her sister? That would be something else. She had not seen her around campus. She wanted to bump into her and start talking to her for no reason.
"Let's go see Lark and see what she has to say about this." Jade slipped on her sandals, but she gave her a quizzical look. "What?"
"You haven't told big sis you're pledging something else! She's going to freak out."
"No she won't."
"Un-huh!"
"What do you want me to do? Not tell her anything until she sees me probate down the line?" Jade fluffed out her hair. "I'm not scared. Just going to face it head-on. Come on."
If it was her she would have kept quiet. No need to tell her sister now, especially if they did not know whether they were getting in or not. How would she be around her sister while she was on line? This was about to be the weirdest thing ever.
Jade drove and she was excited to see her niece again. It was weird that her sister was a whole mother right now. She always was a great big sister, not too bossy or overprotective, just there. She knew Jade, like her, secretly idolized her and wanted to be just like her. It's why they both chose ISU.
It's why Jade was majoring in business. This was why she was shocked Jade did not want MAX.
As soon as they knocked on the door, she felt nervous. They were at the MAX house! This was Lark's second year living in the sorority house, even though she was a graduate student now. She was there a lot visiting her sister, and not just MAX activities. She loved the house. It was not too large or too small, even though it was a two-bedroom house.
It was a regular ranch-style two-bedroom house that was right off the main campus, not near any of the bigger, dorm-looking Greek Life houses. It was mostly a brown brick house with white accents, but there were orange highlights, like the door and the mailbox. There was a wooden sign planted in the yard with the sorority's letters. The MAX house could not be missed.
"Heeeey!" It was Jameelah at the door.
This was why she felt anxious now. She was trying to become a member of this sorority and here she was, barging in their home uninvited.
"Uh, hey Jameelah."
"Y'all must be here to see Lark and baby Mindy."
"Already giving her a nickname?" Jade walked in making herself at him, while Amber was a little more hesitant to just walk in.
"If you guys are busy or doing-"
"Girl hush, come on in, you're family."
Lark named her baby girl, Melinda Grace McCormack because of their soror they tragically lost last year. It was a good name for her.
Walking into the house, they were in the large living room where the Sister Circle meetings were held. All around the walls were MAX plaques, awards, and pictures. It was like a history lesson of the last twenty-plus years. She tried not to stare at them too hard. In previous visits when no one was looking, she would study the names and faces of the ladies.
There was a dining room off to the side with a long table and about eight chairs. More than could even fit in the house, so she was not sure why they needed a table so huge. Maybe when MAX members came to visit. The kitchen was also nice sized and there was a basement that she never wandered off to.
Her sister's room was in the back of the house, with a bathroom in between the other bedroom.
"It's so quiet in here, is the baby sleeping?" Jade asked.
"Go on in, maybe, so just be quiet," Jameelah stated.
They made their way to the back of the house and Jade softly knocked on the door.
"Knock, knock," she said as she opened the door.
Lark was sitting at her desk, head in the computer, while in the bassinet next to her bed, baby Melinda slept quietly. Being only six weeks old now, she was sure that was all the baby did.
"Hey twins," Lark greeted before turning back to her laptop. "I'm reading over some stuff for my professor."
"Sorry we're bothering you." Jade went over to the bassinet to look down at the baby. "OMG! She looks so pretty. Like a little doll."
Amber looked down at the baby with the mass of her. "Like an angel."
"You know we said we would babysit any time but you have not called us," Jade said.
"You two need to be focused on school, not watching a baby. I have online and night classes, and when I am in those, Jameelah or Jossie has her for me."
"Cool, cool, but uh, we're your sisters," Amber said hugging Lark. "We want to be around her. We're family."
"Cool, you want her this weekend?" Lark turned to her with a smile. "I'm going up to visit Zavrina and Daysha."
"Yes!" Jade blurted out a little too quickly. "We get her the whole weekend?"
"I'm trying to leave Friday night and come back Sunday. If not, Anika and Patrick offered. And they already have Precious so I just thought-"
"No, let us!" Amber said. She nudged her twin. "I mean, unless we have something else to do."
"I'm good," Jade said.
"What about..." She wrinkled her eyebrows up and down at her sister, trying to get the twin power to work. She had not told Lark she was going out for another sorority.
"Oh, that! Hmmmm."
"Hmmm, what?" Lark shut down her laptop and swiveled around in her chair to give them her attention.
Jade sat down on her bed, but she continued to stand. Normally Jade was the talkative one, but now she was acting all quiet. She said she was not afraid to tell her just a minute ago.
"You know...about pledging..." Amber started to say but Lark cut her off.
"You know we can't talk about that. Anything but that. Let's just talk amongst sisters. What is going on?"
"Well, this is kind of related. Sort of."
"If you think mom and dad will feel some type of way about you deciding to pledge MAX, I think they are over that now and-"
"No, not about me." Amber tilted her head toward her twin sister.
"Oh. Because J's not going out for MAX? That's cool, I didn't think-"
"I want to pledge AKA!"
Like something in the air that wasn't right, that woke baby Melinda up. Lark ignored Jade, stood, and walked to get her daughter. She picked up the baby held her close to her chest and soothed her back to silence.
That was easy. She would have no problem babysitting.
"Lark, aren't you going to say anything?" Jade asked.
"What do you want me to say?"
"Are you upset? You're mad. I knew it!"
"Just kind of...feel like I let you down or something."
"Nooo! Why would you say that?"
"Well...I'm your big sister, and you always have been like my mini-me. I never thought either of you would pledge, but maybe I felt like, if I showed you a good example, you would want to follow me."
"You are the best example!" Jade stood up to face her. "You're the best big sister in the world. You know you are, we both know you are. And yes, I do follow everything you do. I want to be like you so bad...and being like you means I think independently. You pledged MAX against our parent's wishes and that loser Ross. So pledging something else that I feel is a better fit for me, maybe that's me, going against the grain. I want to stand out."
Lark looked down at her daughter. "Don't be like me. Don't fall for a guy you think loves you and end up pregnant and alone."
Her sister said a lot with those words.
"Doesn't matter, you don't need that loser. You're still going to be the best mom ever," Amber said.
"And his loss for not being around his daughter."
"Oh, he wants to see her, but we will see about that."
"Jade, thanks for telling me about pledging AKA. At least you tell me now before I see you on the yard with your pink and green and about pass out about it."
They all laughed.
"But wait! Let me make it in first. Sheesh!"
"And why wouldn't they want you? You got this."
With that, she wanted to ask her sister what was her chances of making it into MAX. but she zipped her lips and let it be. If MAX was meant for her, it would happen.
A/N: I have no idea the dynamics of twin sisters pledging two different sororities at the same time, but I'm going to have fun writing it.
