6. Twin Alert
Amber POV
It was not the fact that her sister did not want to pledge MAX with her, it was that now she wanted to look into pledging something else.
"Why would you want to do anything but MAX? It's the only sorority we've known since meeting Zavrina."
"I know, and she's cool as hell, but sis, there's more than just one sorority. There's this little thing called the Divine Nine and there are four sororities over one hundred years old."
"Is that what it is? MAX is new, not as well known?"
"Well, some of that. And I need bigger and better. MAX is so small. Hey, not knocking that. I know they put in work, but let's just take a look at what the others have to offer."
She shook her head at her sister. She was pledging MAX or it was nothing for her. Now she would have to do it all by herself.
"Will you at least come to the Rush with me? I want to check out my top two."
"Top two?" This was too much for her to deal with. She loved her sister, both of them. She was closest to Jade because she was her twin after all. Maybe if Lark did not pledge MAX she would be looking at other sororities. Was she only following her big sister?
"Yessss! Top two. The elite two. Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta. The first and the second. Others don't compare."
She knew little to nothing about those two sororities. It would not hurt to learn more.
It was a good thing she had not told anyone but Daysha she wanted to pledge in case she changed her mind. Not that she thought she would. MAX had everything she wanted.
It so happened that week several sororities were having their Rush. There were a few notices up around campus and also posted on the chapter's webpage with location and time information.
"Should we wear their colors to the meetings?" Amber asked her sister.
"Girlllll, what are you crazy? No! No way. Neutral colors."
She was dressed in a black pantsuit with a white blouse underneath. Now she was too afraid of any colors representing any sorority. No red, no pink, no green, no blues, no gold, or no orange. Jade was dressed in a gray and black dress. She was happy they did not pick the same outfit since they dressed similarly sometimes, but never had the same taste.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was the first Rush they went to. They had the largest number of members of all the African American Greek chapters, at eighteen ladies. The ladies they took over last year included ten new pledges. Their Advisor was a Professor on campus. There were about twenty girls interested in the Rush.
She looked around at everyone, shocked that she knew no one. ISU was huge, but the Black population was small. She was in a leadership position at BSU, which meant she should be familiar with lots of Black and brown faces on campus. Also, she needed to get out more.
"These where the steppers are," Jade said to her, giving her a little nudge during the meeting.
"Uh, MAX won the step show last year," she whispered back.
"Shhh!" Jade hushed her.
She was a little overwhelmed by the Rush. There were videos and lots of video presentations, the Advisor spoke, the president spoke, the Vice President spoke, and then the treasurer discussed the financial element. She was impressed by the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta for sure, but still, it was not calling for her.
Two days after that, she and Jade attended the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Rush meeting. This time, they shocked each other by wearing the same dress but in different colors. Amber wore a royal purple, long dress, and Jade wore a deep wine-colored dress the same as hers.
"Change!" they both said to each other.
"No," Amber said as she finished her makeup. "All my other clothes violate."
"Girllll, you have other dresses, stop playing with me," Jade rummaged through her closet. "I am not changing."
"Then fine, don't."
As soon as she walked into the Alpha Kappa Alpha meeting, she saw differences already. The AKAS were mostly in all pink, some with a touch of green. They seemed more relaxed and playful than the Deltas. They were smaller, with only ten members in the chapter this year, their last line had six members.
Like the Deltas' meeting, their Advisor was there, except she was not someone who worked on campus. She lived and worked in Bloomington-Normal and was a graduate of ISU, she was younger, closer to their age.
Once again, she looked around the meeting. Again, not familiar with anyone there. But then she saw her.
A girl so pretty she wanted to run up to her and know everything about her. She was breathtaking. Cute face with no make-up on her tawny yellow skin, but big brown eyes with long natural eyelashes. She wore a simple flowery summer dress, her short curly hair framing her face. She was exquisite.
During the meeting, and whatever they were talking about, she kept glancing at the girl. Wondering what was her name. Wondering if she was into girls. She had no way of knowing if she was a lesbian, bi, or whatever. That was the thing with her, she could not detect it.
Ever since getting her feelings hurt in high school, she did not like to make the first move unless a girl flirted with her or showed interest.
She was not into the meeting, the ladies were tuned out to her. She found herself daydreaming about the beautiful girl. They would look so cute together. Holding hands and walking around campus together. Going on dates doing sweet, romantic things. Kissing and making out.
She had to stop herself from crushing so hard so fast.
She blinked rapidly to snap herself back to reality. This was not the time or place. Soon enough, the meeting was over and they could mingle, ask questions, and have refreshments. She noticed the hot girl raised her hand first.
"Yes, you have a question?" the president asked her. Devona was her name, and she had seen her around a lot last year. Pretty girl, but was not her cup of tea.
"This is a lot of money! Can we pay on a payment plan?"
That got a few giggles from some of the girls. But Amber was focused on her melodic voice. It made her hot! She scrunched down in her seat a bit because the girl made her hot.
"Stop slouching," her sister hissed at her.
"If you do not have the fees to proceed with intake this year, maybe try again next year," the president answered.
Then her sister's hand shot up, as she sat there with a big smile on her face. She fought the urge to slouch again.
"Oh, twins in the house!" Nixie was the Vice president, and a member of BSU so knew them both well. She was cool with her and liked her a lot. "What's up Jade, what's the question?"
"As the oldest sorority in the Divine Nine, we get bragging rights, right?"
Some of the other interests at the meeting laughed, but the ladies of AKA sat there poised as ever silent, even scoffed at them, obviously not liking her sister's question.
"First of all, there is no we...you are not in my sorority." Nixie who was all smiles at them at first, was not too pleasant. "You have to work hard and earn these letters."
"Period," another AKA said.
She did not like how they flipped it on her sister real quick. She only asked a simple, harmless question. Maybe the AKAs were like their reputation. Snooty, stuck-up pretty girls.
A/N: Just want to let my readers know, that this is not the process. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT!! You do not go to as many Rushs as you want. You only go to the Rush of the sorority you are interested in. Before the Rush, at least in my school, there were "informational meetings." They generally were within the first 2-3 weeks of school and only gave out general information about the sorority, and was more of a get-to-know-you event.
Rush is where we go into more detail on what is needed (GPA, letters of recommendation, initiation fees, and so on). Each interest picks up an application at Rush (done electronically now). There is a certain amount of time to complete all the things necessary.
More detail in later chapters.
