44. Twinkle Down
Amber POV
She decided to enjoy whatever type of relationship she could have with Jodi. She loved being with her and if they had to keep it on the down low she was okay with that. There still was a strong urge to tell her sister. Jade would understand and not tell anyone else if they did not want her to.
And bonus Jodi was her line sister. They bonded while pledging and were super close. Jodi was always in their room and not to hang out with her, but to hang with Jade.
They were always talking about AKA stuff so it was a shock when Jameelah told them they were called to a group meeting with the AKAs one evening. Neither Jade nor Jodi told her anything about that.
"Why are we meeting with another sorority?" she asked Laila and Marketta while they made it over to the Student Union.
Marketta shrugged. "I don't know. But I did float the idea of a unity step team at PanHel and Nixie got all attitude-y with me about it. Said they were discussing it as a chapter, which fine, sure, do that."
"I think it's a great idea," she said to Laila. "I mean, I've never stepped before but I'm so in with doing it with all the other organizations."
"Personally...I don't know," Laila said. "Everyone is pushed to the limit with other things we do, but to add on practicing for another thing..."
"Oh we need you sis, please say you will."
"There is strength in numbers," she added. "The AKAs and Deltas have like a billion of them, there are only five of us on campus...well, undergrad anyway."
"I didn't say I wouldn't do it, just that I have so many other things I'm doing. I am so in."
Sure, because you get to spend more time with Alonzo," Laila said in a teasing way.
"I told you he needs to spend time with his sons, not me."
It was wild that Laila was dating someone with kids. They still felt too young for kids. Then again, her sister already had a baby. Anika had a baby during her sophomore year. This could be her or her line sisters next. Well, not her. She was never having sex with a boy.
They met up with Anika and Jameela in front of the Student Union. It was after dinner time, so that meant few people were hanging out at the Union in the middle of the week. Some students liked to hang out there and not in their residence halls, while others had meetings or events at the Union. The AKAs booked a meeting room for them to meet there, so whatever was about to be discussed was serious.
"Maybe a joint activity because you know, we those girls on this here campus!" Jameela with all the confidence as they rode the elevator up.
"Whatever girl, I think this is bogus," Anika stated. "I don't know any of them that well, but they could have discussed whatever, President to President."
Now she was beginning to get nervous about what this was all about. When they made it to the meeting room, right on time, well, two minutes before eight p.m., seemed like every last one of their members were there, which looked like a mob to her. She looked around to see if she could spot her sister or Jodi, and sure enough, they were there sitting beside each other but they were not giving her eye contact.
What were they walking into?
"Hey ladies, come on in." Devona, the President, was dressed in a white tee with a pink and green AKA cardigan over it, and black slacks. Very professional, while she had on grungy jeans and an old sweatshirt that was Lark's before she handed it down.
None of the MAX ladies were dressed for a business casual meeting either. They didn't even wear their letters or colors. Most of the AKAs were in pink and green in some form, and some with their letters. She wished they would have told them what the meeting was about beforehand.
There were five chairs for them at the front of the room, and now it felt like they were about to be in an inquisition.
"Devona, we have no idea what is going on here," Jameela voiced her concern, and she could tell there was attitude in it. They were being set up for something.
"We wanted to keep this all between us and not spread it around campus."
What the hell was she even saying? Spread what around campus. She looked to her sister again, trying to see if she could twin vibe it from her. The bad thing was they were not identical, so they never had those types of vibes. She wished they had. Or she wished her sister would have warned her.
"What is this about then?" Anika asked.
"I'll just get right to the point," Nixie stated, her eyes made way to her. "We believe you girls sent a...spy to learn more about our organization."
"A what?" Jamella shouted out.
"Don't try and deny-"
"What are you talking about? Respectfully, are you out of your mind?" Jameela asked.
"Why would we do that Nixie? Tell us?" Anika asked.
"Oh, we're going to act like you didn't send one of your sorors' sisters to our RUSH."
She blinked her eyes quickly when she let it sit in that they were talking about her. "Me? I came to Rush...but I was with my sister."
And her traitor sister was sitting right there and not saying anything. If this was what it was about, Jade should have squashed it long ago why she was there.
"Jade told us you already were going to be a MAX, so why would you even come to our RUSH?" one of the neos asked.
"Because she asked me too!" It took everything in her to not scream at them. "We also attended Delta Rush, but they had no problem with it."
"We thought you were going to pledge with your sister," Nixie said.
There were so many things she wanted to say to that, but she remained calm. She did not need to look to her line sisters for help in this. "Why would you think that? Because I came to your Rush?"
"Yes."
She had no words for the audacity that was going on here. Rush was open to anyone who wanted to learn more about what it took to pledge that sorority. Attending one, two, or all of the sorority Rushes on campus did not mean that's what they were joining.
"Sorry you guys felt that way. I always knew I wanted to pledge MAX since Lark pledged MAX." She was ready to give them a piece of her mind. "It took coming to school here and seeing how the MAX ladies were on campus that cemented it for me. The fact that Jade pledged AKA was a slap in my face as well as Lark's. So ask her why she pledged AKA."
"I'm my own person, that's why," Jade jumped in to say. "You only pledged MAX because of Lark, so admit that."
This was her sister talking to her this way in front of everyone? Who even was she? This was not the twin she spent all her life with. What changed about her since becoming a member of this sorority?
"Not only that, but we were rather shocked that Laila and Marketta pledged MAX," Nixie said.
Well, it was a good that some of the heat was being taken off her. However, she knew for a hundred percent fact that neither of them had any interest in anything else.
"Why is that?" Marketta said. "We never went to your Rush."
"But you both came to so many of our activities last year. That's what people do when they have an interest in the organization."
"Or that's what people do when you're engaging in the community around you," Marketta said. "We were freshmen last year, we were trying to get involved. We went to everyone's function."
"Yeah, like..." Laila had a confused look on her face. "Help me understand? Sooo...people should not go to your events unless they are interested in joining your organization?"
Jameelah let out a chuckle at that. She held in her laughing.
"You just sent out mixed signals, is all we're saying," Nixie said.
"Okay listen," Jameela said. "We have no issues with any of you or the organization. We have mad respect for all the historical Black sororities and fraternities on campus. We may be the underdogs here, but we're not going to roll over and let you kick us. My neos did nothing wrong and there is nothing else to discuss about this."
"Is this why you're not interested in doing the unity step?" Marketta asked.
Some of the AKA ladies looked around at each other as if this was the first time hearing of the unity step team. Marketta told her about it as soon as she got back from the meeting a few days ago. Had they not even discussed it?
"We're still in discussion about it," Nixie stated.
She still tried to make eye contact with her sister, who looked every way but at her. She would deal with her later in the room. The least she could have done was warn her what the meeting was about. All while she pledged, she shared every single little thing they did or said to her. From every silly greeting to every little errand around campus they had to do. All about the late nights in her line sisters' rooms or study sessions at the library.
But this?
What kind of hell was she in was she losing her sister?
Her twin sister was disappearing before her eyes. The twinkle was gone.
A/N: True situation that happened! The AKAs thought one of our neos was a "spy" because she went to their Rush and then pledged Delta. She only went to support a friend who ended up pledging AKA solo. The way we were in that meeting and had no clue what it was about till they started talking 🤷🏾♀️
