43. Class is in Session

Marketta POV

"Divine Nine is a powerful tool, and I choose to use them to the best of their abilities."

Although technically Mu Alpha Chi was not in the National Pan-Hellenic Council or NPHC as it was called, on any campus they were chartered, they could be a part of the collegiate organization. She joined as soon as she could. Attending the meeting with all the other Black Greek organizations felt like power.

The Collegiate NPHC on campus was responsible for uniting all the Black sororities and fraternities on campus. Planning their activities to complement each other There was always competition, but the friendly kind. The executive board was compromised by members of several different organizations. Right now the President is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was an amazing leader and had done a lot for the organization in the last few months.

MAX could not hold a position on the Executive Board but they had all other rights and privileges. She planned on taking full advantage of that.

"I'm still learning about all we have had our hands in over the years and it's amazing," she said while at a meeting. "We've shaped the world as far as civic responsibility, voters rights, and gaining political power. As they say, there is strength in numbers."

"Girl, you're new, slow your roll," Jamishia Jameson said, who was the President. The girl was always put together, with hair, nails, and makeup on point, and dressed to the nine. They said her line name was M.V.P for Most Valuable Pyramid. Last year she was President of her sorority, now she was leading the NPHC.

Jamishia was another leader on campus she looked up to.

"I'm just saying, we need to show them we are more than just the social and have been putting in work. You guys have all made it over a hundred years. I hope one day our organization makes it that far and grows as big as yours."

"We're not at one hundred yet," Brandon Tanner was quick to add. He was a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity and the current Vice President. Nothing to look at too, but he seemed like a decent guy.

The men of Iota were the last of the Divine Nine, and they were founded in 1963.  It was cool that they were founded at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. They still had their headquarters in Baltimore as well. Also with headquarters in Baltimore was Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

She did her research, she knew just about more about all the Divine Nine than she did Mu Alpha Chi. Although most of them were founded at Howard University in D.C., some of the others were at predominately white institutions. Similar to the founding of MAX at Illinois State University, a PWI. And their headquarters was in Chicago.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority also had its headquarters in Chicago even though they were founded at Howard University.

It was pretty interesting that five of the nine were founded at Howard University (AKA, Deltas, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Zeta Phi Beta), and that only Deltas, Sigmas, and Zetas had headquarters in D.C.

It would have been cool if they could all be headquartered in the same city.

Something about her wanted a kumbaya moment.

"I propose we form a unity step team and perform at the big step show this year." There, she finally put her idea out there. Either everyone laughed at her or she received a pat on the back for a great idea.

"A unity step team?" someone asked.

"All the BGLOs come together, have two or three, or how many they think best, and perform a show showing the unity of our organizations. Exhibition only, of course."

"That's not a bad idea," Jamishia said. "But we would need all participation from the Black Greek orgs on campus. MAX and EUs as well, not just the nine."

"Oh, we're in!" Brian, the Epsilon Upsilon stated. "I'll get some neos in on that."

Considering they had a nice-sized line, that would be great. She would volunteer for herself and get her line sisters as well. That would mean they needed to learn two routines. MAX and the Unity step.

"I guess we could spare a couple of neos to do it," Jamishia stated.

Delta Sigma Theta was the largest BGLO on campus with fifteen before their new line of ten ladies. So at a whopping twenty-five current members, they pretty much ran the campus. The next in size to them were the Alphas with twenty members, followed by AKAs with eighteen members.

Her dream was to have MAX one day bring in big numbers like a line of seven or eight, Next year there would be four of them on campus and hopefully they could pull in a big line. Judging by how many were at her Rush, she did not see why.

"I don't know if we want to offer up some of our neos," Nixie, the Vice President of AKA stated, with an eye roll to her.

She had no clue what that was for. Nixie with the long hair, Instagram Instagram-perfect face that looked like a permanent filter on it, and an amazing body that caught all the guys' attention. Not only was she gorgeous, but she was smart and the current Secretary of the Student Government as a junior. She was always cool with Nixie because she came to BSU meetings and always participated with a smile on her face. Why was she throwing shade at her now?

"If not a neo, I'm sure you have a few to spare."

They had eighteen members, surely a few would volunteer.

"I have to bring it up with the ladies and see what they say but I don't see why would we want to waste our time-"

"Wow girl, it's about unity. U-N-I-T-Y! Not only does it make your organization look good, it lets GDIs see the good side of Greek organizations," Brandon jumped in to say. "And how would it look with half the organizations doing a Unity step? Either we are all in are we are not doing it. So go back to whoever you need to go to, get the word out, and send us some of your people willing to devote a little time to it."

She was so glad that Brandon stepped in with force for her idea. It did not seem like a hard ask to her. MAX had small numbers and she would make sure they were represented. She hoped for a hundred percent participation from all of the organizations.

"Like I said," Nixie fixed her eyes to her. "I will get back to my sorors about it. I'm not promising a thing until we have a vote on it."

Okay, Nixie must have a problem with her and she had no clue why. What had she done to the girl? She was always nice to her at BSU meetings, and she even attended some AKA functions last year. She was all about peace and love, and getting along with everyone. Especially because she planned to run for a position in Student Government. She needed Nixie at her side.

Whatever her issue with her, she would play nice with her or keep it moving.

A/N: I have never participated in a Unity Step while in college. The semester after I graduated, there was a Unity Step including nonBlack Greek organizations. I think Unity Step teams are more common than they were back in my day. Also, what do you think Nixie's problem is?
