32. Twinnem

Amber POV

"I can't believe it's almost over!"

She squealed with her sister as they jumped up and down in their room. They were both about to be done with pledging and about to wear their letters on their chest proudly.

Of course, she would be more than just a letter-wearer.

"Girlllll! I have never been so nervous in my life. What if I forget everything I know and embarrass myself at probate," Jade sat on her bed and rocked back and forth in a way she never saw her confidant sister.

"Girl what? You know you're about to be the best, boss-bitch up in there!"

"True," she said with a chuckle, making Amber realize she was only joking about being nervous. She knew her twin sister was a natural performer, unlike her.

Although the MAX ladies were being way hush-hush, the fact that they only focused on perfecting their probate show the last week, and finding outfits for it, she knew it was a matter of days. Jade told her she knew hers would be Friday night.

That was tomorrow.

"Are you ready for this? I mean, really ready to be in this organization, for life. No takebacks," she said to her sister.

"Yes, girl. And with all this denouncement stuff, they have given us every opportunity to walk away. We're not worshipping another God, kneeling to them, or turning away from whatever religion we believe in. I mean, I'm not even on the other side yet and I don't understand how people get that twisted." Jade shrugged her shoulders. "I mean, to each their own."

"I think if I found out MAX did not align with me anymore, I'd walk away the same way I walked in, quietly. I've been through the wringer these last few weeks, but I've also learned so much. Not just about the sorority, but about life. Hell, I've had two sisters all my life, but I've learned what real sisterhood is."

"Speak!"

"Forever Laila and Marketta will be my sisters, but in a different way than you are."

"Girl, same." Jade ran a hand through her fresh box braids. She had gotten braids as well, but smaller. "And neither of our sororities will ever break our bond. Promise?"

"Promise."

The next night, in anticipation of Jade's probate show, she was shocked when she got a call from her parents that they would be at the probate show in support of Jade. This was surprising to her because of how they felt about Greek life. She knew Lark changed their opinion, so hopefully they accepted both her and Jade's pledging.

"I can't believe I had to buy all this AKA stuff for my sister," Lark said with a laugh as they prepared some of the gifts for Amber.

As soon as her parents came into town, they dropped off their gifts to Lark, swooped up the baby, and checked into their hotel to spend time with her before the probate later that night. They didn't even wait till she could make it to the MAX house, they left before she made it there and Lark already had the things spread out in the living room to take to her car.

Balloons, notebooks, a purse, a keychain, pencils and notepads, a tote bag, several t-shirts with her number six, and some artwork. Mostly Lark and her parents bought all the gifts for her. All she did was get her a keychain and a T-shirt. Her parents went all out in ways they did not for Lark.

"Do you feel some kind of way mom and dad never came down for yours or bought you anything?"

"First of all, I did not have one. I was solo and they asked me if I wanted to do one and I said no. And I did not want them down because I knew they would not approve. That was my time and they would have ruined it." Lark packed everything in her car. "Good thing it all worked out or you and your twin would be ass out."

She nodded. She wanted to ask her sister if would they be there for hers, but she kept quiet. Today was not about her, it was about her sister.

And Jodi. A smile crept on her face as she remembered she bought her a t-shirt, baseball-style cap, and a keychain as well. Her number was seven, so she also made a plaque with her number on it, but she wanted to add her pledge name whenever she found out what it was. She could not wait to see her.

"Ugh! Why am I this way?" she thought to herself. Jodi was straight and did not think of her that way. She would be happy just being friends with her.

Before the probate show, family members were invited to congratulate the girls first. Since the AKA line was huge, there were a lot of family members there. Her parents were running late with Mindy but they would be there. She looked around to see if she could spot Jodi's parents.

The only older white man there had to be her father because she knew Jodi was bi-racial. She studied the man to see if he resembled Jodi. The woman with him looked young, with long, straight black hair down her back. She was stunning, and she could see where Jodi got her looks.

Also with them were two younger boys, maybe high school age. There she was sure of the resemblance. One of the brothers looked like her twin with the curly short hair.

When the new AKA ladies, dressed in all white, finally walked in, they were shocked to see all of their family and friends there to see them. Everyone was excited to see them as they ran to their loved ones. Jade immediately spotted Lark and her and rushed over.

"Congratulations twin!" she said and hugged her sister.

"Thanks so much for coming you two! I can't believe I made it. I'm an AKA!" Jade was in near tears.

Lark grabbed her face and rubbed tears from her cheeks. "You do look good in pink and green, lil sis. So proud of you."

Her parents finally made it with Mindy and they congratulated her as well. She was too busy trying to strain her neck and watch Jodi with her family. They seemed nice and happy about her crossing. All was good.

She would wait till after her probate to give her the gifts. After family members congratulated and spent time with the new AKAs, they had to change and get ready to perform their probate show.

It felt like there were about a hundred AKAs in attendance. It was like a convention for them or something. She did not realize how deep they were. Then again, they were the first Black Greek organization ever.

Watching her sister and Jodi do a great job at their probate made her worry about hers. Laila and Marketta were there with her watching the probate and they kept giving each other looks. Their time was near.

"Hey Jodi, congrats, I didn't get to say that when you were with family and-"

"Girl, you could have come over. You want to meet my mom and dad and them?"

There was no reason for her to fall more for the girl by meeting her family.

"No, it's cool. And you should just enjoy this moment. Kick it up with your sorors and stuff."

Jodi smiled at her. "And you very soon, huh?"

Very soon turned out to be Sunday evening. She had no idea it would be that soon, but she should have known something was up when her parents said they were staying all weekend.

"Congratulations sorors!"

Somehow her mind went blank during their whole ceremony as they crossed and became MAXs. Even Anika pinning her with the MAX letters had not sunk in. She stared over at her line sisters. Did they know? It was all over and had not sunk in.

"Ladies, celebrate, cry, something!" That from  Zavrina who came down for their crossing. along with other Alumnae.

"I don't know what to say." Was this real? Was she a MAX now?

"Oh sis, let it out," Lark said at her side hugging her. "So proud of my baby sister joining my sisterhood. You've earned this, all on your own."

Then the tears flooded down her face. This was real. She was a Mu Alpha Chi now. Something she wanted after many years of seeing Zavrina and her relationship with Lark. She never knew that was what she wanted, but it all cemented in her last year seeing the ladies work on campus.

Now she was one.

"I'm still in shock," Laila said at her side. "Are we in? We're MAXs?"

"How come y'all making three-point o's and higher but can't comprehend you've made it into the sorority," Jossie stated with a chuckle. "I've been through this how many times and it never ceases to amaze me."

"True," one of the other Founders said. "But let them bask in this moment."

Yes, that. It was over. She did not have to come to session every other day. She did not have to study MAX and learn everything and more. She did not have to greet her sorors with song and dance.

Sorors. Soror! There, she said it in her mind, now all she had to do was say it out loud.

"Hey sorors!" she said to her line sisters.

That made the Alumnae ladies laugh. Now she felt better and more comfortable. She hugged all her prophyte ladies and thanked them for helping her throughout the process, then she made it to her line sisters.

"We did this! We better be the best MAXs they ever see. Starting with our probate show."

Like last year, they were doing a combined show with the Epsilon Upsilon men. Rehearsals had gone great so there was nothing left but to do it. Present herself to the rest of the campus as a MAX.

Her parents being there and cheering her on felt the best. But also looking out there and seeing Jodi front and center with her sister felt even better. Adrenaline on ten, the night could not get any better.

A/N: Love a good probate show. I've seen them from all sides at this point, except performing one myself, and thankful because it was a hot mess 😂
