30. Twin Vibe
Amber POV
"We have to what?"
"It's called a probate show, didn't you come down for Lark's? The family of members crossing are invited and typically comes down," Anika said to her.
"No, I did not."
She would have remembered being invited to come down to see her sister's big day. No, because her parents did not want Lark to pledge and they for sure did not want to see her crossing. Because Lark defied them they temporarily stopped paying for her college tuition. It was a rough few months for her, feeling estranged from her sister because her parents were being assholes.
They got over it quickly once they saw that Lark could do it all on her own. They paid her back the tuition and even helped a bit with graduate school. They rebuilt their relationship and her parents spoiled their first grandchild. In fact, they had Mindy now for a few weeks.
They were having one-on-ones with their special big sisters. Anika was paired with her and she was happy about that. She thought Anika was gorgeous, ambitious, and such a phenomenal person. Married, raising a baby, and handling MAX business as well
"But you do know about probating right?"
Yes, she knew what a probate show was, she attended it last year when the MAXs and the EUs performed it together. Why, in her naive mind, she did not think it was something she would have to do. Stand in front of hundreds and perform?
"I went to you guys probate and it looks like a lot of work. Tell me more about what we're going to do. Are you guys going to tell us what to say? We have to memorize everything or will there be cue cards?"
Anika laughed at her while they were at the MAX house, alone hanging out and bonding. It felt weird to be at the house without her line sisters, or her sister there.
Lark was Laila's special sister and Jameela was Marketta's, and they probably were having the same one-on-ones somewhere. There was no need to pair her with her sister because the point was to bond with someone in the sorority they did not know well. She admired Anika so much that she was happy about their match.
"Cue cards? Girl, why are you so funny without even trying." Anika continued to laugh at her but she was so serious.
That was a lot to remember and recite, especially in front of people. And then there were moves they had to do. Hopefully no dancing. Or in this case, stepping.
"I'm not the performer type person...now my sister..." She stopped herself from saying more. Surely Jade would go off in her probate and people would hype her up. Would people even care that she was a MAX? The unpopular twin.
"We're talking about you, not your twin. Girl, you're going to do great, why, because you're my Spec."
Anika's having faith in her made her feel better, but not to the point she was confident she would not make a fool of herself. She signed up to be in a sorority, not a performing group. It was easy for Anika to shine in front of a large audience, she was a dancer.
After hanging out with Anika, she headed to her dorm room. Once she opened the door, she was shocked to find Jodi there with Jade. They were standing side by side and doing a little dance.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I should have knocked," she blurted out before she had a chance to think. Why should she knock at the door of her room?
"Girl, you're good," her sister said to her. "We're practicing for our show."
Their probate show for sure, but she would not say a word.
"Oh, okay," she said, dropping her bag on her desk. "I'll get out of your way-"
"No, watch and let us know," Jodi said.
"Me? But I-"
"Yeah sis, come on, aren't y'all getting ready for yours? This means it's about to be over soon." Jade started to do the Cabbage Patch dance in a circle to make her laugh.
"I bet the MAXs are going to come with it again," Jodi added.
She was not aware that Jodi knew she was on line for MAX, but she had to know. Lark being a MAX and all, most anyone on the yard expected both her and Jade to pledge the same. Boy were they in for a surprise.
"We uh...haven't even started, but I think we will this week." She kicked off her shoes and sat on her bed, folding her feet under her. "Go ahead, I would love to see what you have so far."
Jade and Jodi did their greetings, to the Alumnae, to their Big Sisters, and then individually to the ten AKAs on the yard. Sheesh, that was a lot. Then they recited their founders and a brief history. Then they started doing some kind of dance thing to thank their big sisters for helping them in the process.
"That's all we have for now," Jade stated. "More coming."
"Y'all gonna perform with the EUs again? It was a dope probate last year," Jodi said.
"Uh..." She had no clue so she shrugged.
"It's cool y'all have like a real sisterhood/brotherhood things with them, like the Zetas and Sigmas."
"Actually, it's a lot different. The Sigmas helped the founders of Zeta. The EUs had nothing to do with our beginning except they were close by in Illinois and only a few years older than us."
"Okay, okay," Jodi said. "My bad."
"Are they giving you hell about me?" Amber asked.
Not anymore she thought to herself. "No, it's all good. They see us as different. We're twins yes, not identical, and even then we'd be our own person."
"Well hell, my Big Sisters are asking me all the damn time why I'm not following Lark's footsteps. But they don't ask about you much."
"You came to our Rush, right? Why didn't you pledge with Jade?"
It was kind of cool talking to Jodi as if they were buddies now. Even though she was still attracted to her, she could get over that because there would never be anything between them. She was going to be Jade's line sister, and that was it.
"Yeah, we went to several Rushes actually," she explained to her. "I just vibes with MAX, the leadership part of it. I mean, I probably was biased about it because of Lark but I have learned more and more about them on my own. I would have pledged it without Lark."
Jodi came over and sat on her bed with her. "I always knew, even before I set foot on campus. One of my teachers I loved is an AKA. She was mad cool and she always wore pink and green, paraphernalia, and was so proud of her letters. Active in her chapter and invited us to all their programs. I was in the debutante ball and everything."
"That's cool," she said, interested in everything Jodi could say. And having her close was nice as well.
"Won some scholarships from them as well, so I guess you could say because of them I am here. And I just want to give back the same."
"Girl, we got this. Soon. For real."
Her phone going off interrupted the conversation. When she grabbed her phone from her desk she saw that it was Laila. That meant something was going down.
"Excuse me, I have to get this." She took her phone and walked out of the room into the hallway. There was no need for them to hear her talk about pledge stuff. "What's up?"
"We need to get together tonight."
"But we don't have a session tonight."
"I know, but Lark said we should have something ready for our probate show by the next session."
"WHAT?" Anika told her no such thing, just be ready to start practicing soon. "We don't know what we're doing yet."
"I know, we have to come up with it ourselves."
Simple, just like they did last year, greetings and history. That's what most probate shows were. Why did they need to practice that when they had done it dozens of times?
"Okay, I guess I will meet you in your room soon." She went back to her room. Jodi had moved to Jade's bed now and they were talking and laughing lying in her bed. How cozy of them. "Sorry guys, I have to go."
"Aw really? It was cool hanging out and hearing some MAX stuff from you," Jodi said.
She looked at her sister and hoped her twin vibe would work on her. She felt some kind of way about Jodi knowing anything about her process.
"Amber relax, this is my girl, she is not going to say anything to anybody."
"Oh, of course not." Jodi smiled at her. "Just think of me as another sister."
She nodded her head at that. There was no way she was thinking of a hot girl as her sister.
A/N: Probate shows, always fun and they do take a lot of practice. They've become a big deal over the years. In my day it was no big deal if you performed one. We had a show ready but never performed it.
