27. Twin, Interrupted

Amber POV

"You know what I love about being a twin?" her sister asked.

She lay in bed, stared at the ceiling daydreaming about life, pledging, her friends and the feelings she could not tell anyone she felt for the girl she could not have. Her sister, back from out of town with her line sisters and the AKAs filled her in on all the fun and crazy things they had to do.

She talked about bonding with her line sisters, getting to know them, and liking them a bit more than she initially thought. She did not mention Jodi at all.

"No, what do you like about being a twin?" she asked Jade.

"Not only are we best friends for life, but I also have someone I can share everything with. Like, we're not even supposed to be talking about things that go on, but I know you're not telling anyone." She sat up abruptly in her bed. "You're not, are you? Are you telling your line sisters everything?"

"What?" No!" How could her sister even ask her that? "We're too busy with our stuff we don't have time to sit around and talk about what AKAs are doing."

Jade smiled at her. "What do you guys do?"

"Huh?" She had yet to tell Jade all of the things they were doing on line. It was not her business. They were going to be in two different sororities and they needed to keep that business separate.

"Oh come on, I tell you everything."

"Then maybe you shouldn't." She sat up in the bed, turning to her sister. "Your process is your process, and mine is mine."

"Girlllll, who am I going to tell? That's why we're twins. No secrets between us. Don't let the fact that we're pledging two different organizations change that."

She felt bad that her sister thought because of pledging things would change. How could she explain that MAX business was MAX business and every other sorority's business should stay theirs? She did not need nor want to know their process.

"Aren't you learning things that you cannot divulge? Or ceremonies that are sacred? There are things in every organization we can't share with people not in it. Doesn't mean we are a cult, unchristian-like, or worshipping Greek Gods. I am not going against anything I believe in, and I trust that you're not either."

"I'm not!"

"Then keep it all to yourself. In fact...Jodi can't come over anymore. You two giggle and talk about being on line, and I don't need to hear it." She was saying this moreso because of her crush, but even besides that, they should not be hanging in her room. "I have to keep running off to my line sisters' room, and it's not fair. This is my room."

"Well!" Jade huffed and crossed her arms across her chest. "Enlightening conversation twin. Funny way of saying you hate me now."

"What?" She slid off her bed. "Jade, that's ridiculous. You know I love you more than any words can explain. You're my sister. My twin. We never fight like this, so why are we fighting now?"

"MAX is changing you."

"Me?"

"Yes! Wasn't I the first you told you were gay? I was the first you told about your crushes. You tell me everything and now...you tell Marketta and Laila, I bet."

She had not even told her that Marketta and Laila were on line with her, but she was sure it was obvious.

"You treat them like they are your sisters now." Jade wiped at her face.

It was dark in their room, so she had to flick the light on to see that her sister was crying. This made her feel bad. Maybe she was neglecting her sister while she was on line.

She sat on the bed with Jade and put an arm around her.

"Sorry if you are feeling this way, but I promise that nothing has changed. You're always going to be my twin sister and nothing can replace that." She rested her head against her sister. "Maybe this is what we need. To do something different, and not solely depend on each other. Sure, maybe I followed Lark, but you were brave enough to do something on your own. All we knew, as far as sorority life, was Lark and MAX. But you came here and made an informed decision all on your own."

Jade sniffed. "Maybe I made the wrong decision."

"What?" This was the first time hearing her sister have any doubts. "Why would you say that? Is something going on with your process?"

"No, I mean...not really. I just don't get along with the girls outside of Jodi. I can fake it well and be all rah-rah, but they take the pretty girl thing too far. Look at them, super pretty and popular, all light skin, long hair."

She did not know who else was on line with her outside of Jodi but surely they were not still using that outdated method for new ladies. Passing the paper bag test. Her sister, as well as her, were well on the darkest end of the spectrum. Some of the AKAs on the yard did not fit that light-bright thinking either.

"I've never known you to be less confident in yourself. What is going on?" She looked around the walls along her sister's bed, pictures of herself posed like a model along the wall with the words, "The Diva Lives Here" mounted on the wall. Jade always knew she was a looker, and used it to get whatever she wanted.

Boys have been after her since kindergarten. Girls wanted to be her. She always had confidence in herself. What was going on?

"I don't know, maybe this pledging thing is a little too much for me."

"Jade! Be serious right now." She nudged her sister with her shoulder. "You want this. I know you want this. From the moment you told me you wanted to pledge AKA. I knew you were making the best choice. Although you're this great leader, like MAX is looking for, you have more in line with AKAS. They were the first. They looooove to say how pretty they are. They also do great things in the community."

"Yes."

"I know you won't let them take the fire out of you. Sometimes they have to break us down, to build us up." Something she realized they were doing with her. Always throwing the fact that she followed her sister into her face. "SHwo them who you are, without having them change you."

"Yeah."

"And once you're in, become even better than before."

"Well...I ask the same of you. Be better. Don't lock me out because we're on opposite teams."

"Ha!" She laughed a little. "We're not opposites, MAX could care less what the AKAs do. Yall I have beef with the Deltas and warranbyted. Weren't the Delta Founders previously AKAs?"

"Shut up!" Her sister pushed her. "I have no beef with anyone."

"It's kinda cool now that we're in it...hopefully almost over, that we have these two very different experiences, but we can still be who we are SIsters. Twins Best friends."

"Yeah, not too many people can say their twin pledged something else."

She sat there and thought of the Founders of MAX, ??? and ??? The twins on line. ??? and ??? the other set of sisters. Her sister before her. This was into another world, having her sister on the other side.

She knew it would not matter in the long term. She refused to let it change their relationship.

"I didn't mean that about Jodi, she can come over if you want."

"No, no, it's cool. I know you have a crush on her and it's too bad she doesn't see what a great catch you are. I would hook you two up if I knew she was a lesbian."

"She only likes boys?' Yeah, she was still holding out hope that she was at least bi.

"Yes, twin. Told me about all her deadbeat exes and everything. She's a wild one. Has a bunch of guys she plays around with. We like the same types of dudes."

She did not want to hear much more. She went to cut the light back out so they could go back to bed.

"Night sis, we can talk more in the morning."

All she did all night was have a wet dream about Jodi going down on her and she had to self-satisfy herself instead.

A/N: This chapter was loaded with a bunch of stuff. Did you know while I was online, I had professional pictures done of myself, made a big poster with all the pictures, and had "The Diva Lives Here" on my door? So my big sisters came to my room one night, saw it, and broke me down good.

I took it down the next day. Never become too conceited. Respect the process and learn Twenty-nine years in, yes, being in my organization changed me. For the better.
