66. Fairytale Princess

Zavrina POV

"Babe, thanks for staying over and helping me study," she ran her fingers through Kenyon's messy curls as he slept.

Kenyon was a sweetheart, staying in her room last night in her little twin bed when he could have been comfortable at his place in his queen-sized bed. Plus, she had to wake up early and he hated that. She was on duty and in between all her rounds, she studied for her finals.

"Z, I need more sleep," he swatted her hand away and she laughed at him.

"I have to get ready for the day, you're just going to lay here?"

"Yes."

She rolled her eyes at him and got out of bed, gathered her things for a shower, and headed into her bathroom. There were two more weeks of school left. She was excited and a bit nervous. Her mother and her grandmother were coming down. If she knew where to locate her father, she would invite him too.

Kenyon would meet her mother and Nana. She knew he would charm them the same way he had Jossie loving him. Now all she had to do was decide on a law school.

If she moved back to St. Louis and went to SLU as she wanted, what would happen with her and Kenyon? See each other sometimes? She would need to buy a car so he would not be the only one making the five-hour drive.

Depending on how much financial aid she would get, she probably would have to move back home. Anything to save money.

When she got out of the shower, towel wrapped around her, Kenyon was sitting up in the bed.

"You could have waited for me, I would have taken a shower with you."

"You wanted to sleep."

"How the hell do you wake up this early? I don't even have a class till one o'clock today. Bruh, it's nobody awake at this time."

She checked her phone, it was only seven-fifteen and she had an eight o'clock class.

"I'm sorry I kept you up late last night." They did not even do anything but study for her finals, which were still six days away.

"It's all good. You gonna help me study for all my tests?"

"Of course I will."

He pulled her in his arms and held her, not saying anything, just looking at her. Whenever he did that it made her uncomfortable.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Stop looking at me like that then!"

"I can't look at my girl?"

"You want to stay in my room and sleep some more? I can come back after my class and-"

"No, I can run back to my place and catch some Zs." He kissed her forehead. "You coming to my place tonight? You won't be on duty, right?"

"Okay, that's a plan."

He dressed and walked out with her, and then she headed to her class. She had two classes back-to-back, then she had office hours for Student Government. She would miss doing all she had done in the last year in that position.

Of course, she was going for bigger and better things in law school.

"Hey, niecey."

She looked up from her computer and saw her aunt Jossie at the door.

"Hey, Auntie."

"So, when were you going to tell me or your mom what you are doing after graduation?"

"Ummm..." She had not fully committed to any law school yet, but she knew she needed to be packing her things and deciding if she was moving home, staying with her aunt over summer break, or coming up with a third solution.

"Don't ummm me, Ms. Thang, use your words."

"Umm...I mean..." Why was she so nervous when her aunt came around? Made her feel like a kid even though she did not treat her like a kid. "Maybe moving back home is the easiest thing."

"So you decided on SLU?"

"Umm...I mean, not really."

Her aunt was going to murder her where she sat. Maybe she should stay in Bloomington with her aunt, then leave for law school when it started. That's probably what she wanted.

Jossie sat in the chair in front of her.

"What about you and Kenyon?"

Now she was in her business and she did not like that at all.

"What about-"

"You know he wants you to move to Chicago and be with him."

She could not believe Kenyon went to her aunt with that. He had some nerve. She would miss seeing him every day, but if their relationship was solid, they could make it far apart.

"Has he been talking to you about our relationship? That's so not cool!"

"No, I've been talking to him about you. He needs to talk to you and tell you what's going on...both of y'all are so stubborn, but y'all need each other. I wish you would see that."

She had nothing to say to her aunt after that.

"Niecey, don't let your insecurities, of being alone, not enough for a guy, ruin this relationship you have with a guy that truly cares. And I'm saying this and I barely know him, but I know enough. Ask him to be honest with you about his parents."

That raised her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"

"Just ask him."

Then Jossie got up and walked out.

What the hell was going on?

Now she would worry for hours till she saw Kenyon. What did her auntie know? What hadn't Kenyon told her about his parents? She knew he was private about all of that so she didn't want to push him.

She held off as long as she could before she texted him.

Can I come over now?

Cool. I'll pick you up and make dinner.

She smiled. Damn, he was so sweet. She got butterflies in her stomach thinking about him. What did her future look like with Kenyon? Would they be together forever? Get married one day, have children? She never really thought about those things, she focused more on her career. She could tell anyone where she would be as a lawyer in ten years but ask her about her personal life and she never planned that.

"How was your day?" he asked when she got into his ride.

She only looked at him, wondering what her aunt was talking about. Looking him over as if a clue was on his body somewhere.

"What's wrong with you?" he asked, pulling off.

She had nothing to say. She was afraid of what she would find out.

"Something must be up if you-"

"Nothing!" she quickly said. At least she was not going to discuss it in the car. She busied herself playing on her phone while he drove.

Once they made it inside his apartment, he pulled her in his arms and gave her a long passionate kiss.

"What was that for?"

"Because I missed you."

"Boy, you just saw me earlier today."

"I know, but I like seeing you every day. And I don't want to give that up."

Okay, here we go, she thought. Kenyon was going to say whatever was on his mind, and she would let him.

"Zav, I want you to move to Chicago and live with me."

She nodded her head, not knowing what to say just yet, but feeling chills all over her body.

"I would move anywhere you are, if I could...but I can't. I need to be in Chicago." He rubbed her bottom lip. "There's something I need to tell you."

This must be what he had been hiding from her. Something to do with his family, his mother, father, or someone.

He took her hand and led her to the sofa and they sat.

"My mother started a business when she was younger than me, before I was born, before she met my stupid ass father...I mean...sorry. And she started it from nothing, no help from her parents. She went to college here, at ISU. One of the first Black women to get her computer science degree here. Well, you know she's half white...my grandmother..."

He stopped. It was obvious to her, seeing the picture of his mother that she was at least bi-racial. He never talked about his heritage, so this was new territory.

"My grandmother disowned her when she married my father, a Black man."

"But...didn't she..."

"She made my mother pass for white growing up. My mother only embraced her Blackness when she left for college."

What in the world? She did look white-ish, but this was too much.

"My grandfather, I guess, was fair-skinned, I never met him. But my father is dark-skinned. My grandmother didn't like that, and the few times I met her, she doesn't treat me like I'm welcomed in the family...except when she wanted my mother's money after she passed. My father, of course, got the bulk of my mother's money. She left me a trust fund...and also the company to me, but I couldn't take over till I graduated college...though I fought it at first, hence why I slacked those first few years, but now I think I'm ready."

He made sure he looked right into her eyes, though she wanted to look away. "It's worth millions, Zav."

"Say what?"

"My grandmother has been trying to get her hands on the company, the money...but my uncle, my mother's older brother has been running it for me till I can take over. After we graduate Z, I want to go back and take over."

This was a little too much. His family issues...a whole company he was about to run...the money.

"Kenny, why didn't you ever tell me you were rich!" She jumped up, in her feelings about this when it had nothing to do with her.

"Zav, listen!" He pulled her back down. "I didn't know how to feel about everything at first. Do you think I wanted all this? I lost my mother, I didn't care about the company or the money. I wanted to distance myself from it. Coming here I never could run from it. She lived in this building and it was one of her first acquisitions. I own this apartment building. The Minority Leadership Scholarship...she set that up while she attended school here. My company runs the Foundation that gives away the scholarships."

"What?"

"Your aunt knew...I mean, I told her, but I didn't want her to tell you even though she was on me about telling you. I didn't because I didn't want you to look at me for just my money."

She pushed him. "Why would you even think-"

"Babe, I know that now." He pulled her in his arms. "And I don't want the money to change us now. Please, don't look at me differently."

How could she look at him as anything other than a millionaire now? Way out of her level, the poor kid on scholarship, his mother's scholarship, that could not afford college if it was not for multiple scholarships.

He rubbed her back, rubbing his nose against her cheek. "Z, I know what you're thinking. Baby, you're enough. You're enough for me. I want you, and I want to give you everything you deserve."

She was numb. "I don't want your money."

"I'm not giving it to you. I want to share it with you. You come to Chicago with me and you don't have to worry about paying for school, I got you."

A tear rolled down her cheek. This was unreal. This man wanted to do that for her?

"I..." She could not quite say the words. "I applied to the University of Chicago...I got in...full scholarship and grants, you don't have to pay."

He smiled at her, then kissed her neck. "So you're coming?"

She squeezed him in her arms. "Yes, I already decided that...but now I'm scared, Kenyon."

"You love me?"

"Yes, I love you."

"Then there's nothing to be scared about."

A/N: Will the real Kenyon please stand up? Boy has been a millionaire, and that fine, all this time? What do you all think?
