13. Supersonic BOOM

She needed a life.

And not just the radio and her sorority.

Jill Supersonic Redmon was on the hunt for a boyfriend.

While hanging out at the Student Union, she met a cutie ordering at Chipotle. He ordered something healthy, no rice, no cheese, extra chicken in a bowl, no wrap. She was behind him and ordered everything in her burrito, extra cheese, and sour cream.

"That's much too much food," he said, glancing over at her.

She looked around her to make sure he was talking to her. She checked the name on her debit card, made sure it was her name, and that she was still paying for her own food. She was. He had no say so in what she put in her body.

"Bruh, I gotta eat, what's wrong with a burrito?"

"You only need to eat to feed your muscles, and you should feed your muscle protein and less fat."

Did she ask him? "Bruh, I like my food to taste good."

He smiled at her and she smiled back. He was fine, fine. Like where had he been hiding? She thought she knew everybody. Maybe not. The school was large, and even though the Black student population was not as large, the school year was new still, and he might be new. He was tall, light brown-skinned with a large beard that was sexy on him, and he had a low haircut with some tight waves. She could not tell what his body was doing with his t-shirt and jeans, but how he was talking about eating healthily and feeding muscles, she knew he had a six-pack.

She wanted to see.

"You're the chick from the radio."

"The one and only!" He grabbed his order and paid for his, and she took her burrito and paid, but wanted to continue to talk with him.

"I listen to you every morning."

Great, a fan. She smiled hard at him now. "REALLY! I mean, really? Yo, that's what's up. What do you like about my show?"

"Your voice," he answered, then licked his bottom lip. "It's sexy.

She smiled hard and blushed. He was trying to steal her heart away saying all the right things. She was just gonna walk back to the house and eat her burrito like a slob, but now she would eat it all cute if he would stay and talk to her.

"Want to have lunch together? I mean, you can tell me more about eating right so I can have a better body and all." She looked around for a table, but the place was packed. It was the middle of the day and most students were having lunch.

He glanced over at her. "Body looking good to me."

Damn, here she was blushing like a chump at him. Well, at least she was dark-skinned and it did not show.

"I can't right now." He pulled out his phone and tapped around a bit. "Give me your IG page, I'll DM you so we can chat."

"Word! I mean, sure, no thang."

His name was R'phael, no A, and she thought that was weird, but it was not his fault his parents named him that. He was twenty and he was a sophomore. He was majoring in Sports Medicine, and that figured since he was into health and fitness. They texted for a few days before she was ready to hook up with him. Finally, a guy that interested her and liked her back.

Of course, he wanted to meet at the school's new fitness center. She had never been, but she heard lots of girls liked to go and try to meet guys. That was not her idea of a date. She was old school, movie, and something to eat, she did not care if that included Netflix and chilling. A date at a gym? She had never worked out a day in her life unless she included horrible gym classes where they made you run, do crunches, and that horrible pull-up test.

To prepare, she jogged through campus to warm up her lungs. Maybe she shouldn't have done that. She had asthma that flared up badly if she did not pace herself. She had her inhaler with her, but how sexy would that be if she broke it out on her date?

She caught her breath before she walked into the fitness center. She could breathe fine, so maybe she was in better shape than she thought she was. R'phael was not there yet, so she walked around looking at everything. There were not many people there, and no one seemed to be coupled up. Only two girls were there, and they were on the weight machines, earbuds in, and focused. They looked like they lived in the gym, from their cute workout gear to the fact that they were not sweating. She looked down at her baggy sweatpants and t-shirt.

Maybe she should have dressed cutely, this was a date after all. But she figured she was going to get sweaty, so she wore limited make-up and had her hair pulled up in a ponytail. Now she wished she would have worn something that showed off her shape a bit. She pulled her hair from the ponytail and tried to make it look cute, but that didn't work so she pulled it back into the ponytail.

There were a few big guys lifting weights like they were Popeye, making grunts and staring at themselves in the mirror wearing muscle shirts revealing their bulging biceps. That was not sexy at all. Did that help them to lift heavy, all that grunting and dropping weights and cheering each other on? Why would anyone think that was cute? She saw why no girls were there trying to hit on those meatheads.

"Hey, you're here!" She turned to see R'phael, dressed almost exactly like the meatheads were. A muscle shirt, basically a tee-shirt with ripped-off sleeves, and gym shorts over shiny legging-looking things. Of course, his muscles were bulging and she could not tear her eyes off his arms.

"He-ey!" She gave him a light hug.

"You look cute."

"Oh, you're just saying that." She blushed at him, tugging at her ponytail. Now she wished it was down again.

"Need to warm up and stretch before we hit it?"

"Ummm..." She scratched her neck. "Hit what? What are we finta do?"

"Let's start with a warm-up on the treadmill, then we should hit the weights."

"Weights? Lifting weights? Naw, I'm good. But we can do the treadmill. I think I can do that." They walked over to the cardio section of treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, and row machines. No one was on any of that equipment and she wondered why.

There were TVs on each treadmill, but when they got on one next to each other, she saw that R'phael did not cut his on, so she did not cut hers on. She was going to follow his lead and try to impress him. She had jogged over there, after all, she could handle a stationary walking machine.

She had never seen one in her life.

Raised by a single mom, when was she going to afford to go to a gym? Her mother was not one to work out either, so exercise was not in her vocabulary. Besides walking, that was the only exercise she had ever done for fun.

"Here, you turn it on like this." R'phael leaned over to press some buttons and the machine kicked in so she started to walk.

"Oh, okay, I got this." She pretended she knew what she was doing. "Need to crank it up a bit."

She sped the machine up a bit till she was at a nice healthy pace. She smiled, this was easy.

"So R'Phael you bring a lot of girls to the gym with you?" He was going at a nice pace, maybe he was taking it easy on her.

"No, I think you're special."

She tried to do a little shake dance at that and almost lost her balance. She recovered quickly, hoping he did not notice her.

"I work out a lot," she lied to him.

"You do? Good. I like a girl that can keep up with me. I'm in the gym five days a week, sometimes twice a day."

"DAMN! I mean, yeah, yeah, I work out like five times a week too."

Why was she lying to him? What was wrong with her? He liked her, she did not have to lie. This walking seemed easy though, she was scared of the weights. She would look wimpy and like a beginner for sure lifting light weights. This treadmill thing, she could do all day.

"You warmed up good?"

"Oh, yeah, sure."

"Come on, crank it up, let's get that heart rate going."

R'phael hit the increase speed button until he was at a light jog. She could do that. She hit a button and the ramp increased the elevation. Oops, wrong button. She hit the correct one and increased the speed. That was better.

"Oh, you're trying to show off, huh?"

R'phael increased his speed more, and his elevation. She laughed at him. He was competitive, she liked that. She increased her speed and elevation. Now, this was not an easy jog, they were running. Her little legs were working so hard, she was not laughing anymore.

And this was not fun anymore. She felt it in her legs immediately. She grabbed the side rails, trying to keep her balance.

"Hey, no cheating, let go," he said, leaning over and increasing her speed some more. "Since you got this."

Was that boy crazy? Her legs were working so fast she felt like how the Olympic runners felt, except it was easy for them. She could not focus on anything but not falling off while trying to look cute. She was breathing hard, trying to breathe normally, but her chest started to tighten up.

Hell no!

She crashed off the machine and landed on the floor with a boom, scrambling for air.

"Jill, you okay?" R'phael was beside her, trying to get her up, but she dug in her pocket for her inhaler.

She did not care how crazy she looked, breathing looked better. She took a couple of puffs and caught her breath, making sure she was fine before she let him help her up.

"You good, girl?"

"ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL ME?" She did not care that others were looking at them right now.

"That was nothing, we weren't even going fast."

"You're trying to kill me!"

"I thought you said you worked out a lot, that was nothing."

"I lied, sue me!" She stormed away from him. He was hot, but why was she trying to impress him and act like somebody she was not? She embarrassed herself for nothing.

And when her sorors heard her story, they showed no empathy for her. Zavrina was on the floor laughing in tears. Sherry was laughing so hard at her but trying not to be like drama queen Zavrina on the floor. They were at the Student Union no less, and people were looking at them.

"Jill, this story can't be real," Sherry gasped out between her chuckles, wiping at the corners of her eyes.

"Why would I lie? I mean, I can lie very well. I told R'phael with the missing A, that I worked out like crazy. He believed me! He's the idiot, not me."

"I think you won that title." Zavrina finally got off the floor, still laughing. "You knew he was a fitness freak, why would you..."

"I didn't think that all the way through, I guess."

"Girl! Do not lie to impress these guys," Sherry told her. "I keep telling you to just be yourself. Sheesh. You make it so hard for yourself."

Maybe her line sister was right. She was going about this all wrong.

A/N: Jill, Jill, Jill! Help her! Can't blame anyone but herself. He showed you who he was by criticizing her lunch. She needs to stop being so desperate and thirsting after these guys. Yeah, more to come like this from her.
