11. Hot as PEPPER
Since that Alpha party, she and Kenyon were going strong. She was trying to take him seriously about them being exclusive. Hell, she was over there nearly every night, he did not have time for any other chick. The sex was better than ever. She was addicted to that boy. She could see why all the girls went crazy over him. The boy had the skills to pay the bills.
But then membership intake started, and she had sessions with the candidates four nights a week. That cut into her personal time. This was her second time going through intake as a MAX, it never got any easier, but it was necessary. Bringing in new members to her sorority was sacred and their best tradition.
Alphas were having membership intake as well. Of course, they used their house to have the meetings, so creeping over there late at night was out of the question. Just when things were going great with Kenyon and her, it came to an abrupt halt. It had been a couple of days since she had her fix of Kenyon and she missed him.
At least her sorority work and Student Government duties kept her busy. She still had those duties to fulfill. Kenyon was pissed about it too, but what could she do. After sessions, she was plain tired. Nights they were off, his fraternity was on. Running over there for a quickie sex session, was not an option. There was no inviting him to her dorm, they were sure to be seen. He didn't care who saw them together, she was still trying to keep it on the down low.
So one day, she walked through the Quad to get to the Student Union, and low and behold, who did she see kissing Brenna the bimbo on campus? This was not a peck on the lips kiss. Kenyon's tongue was in her mouth and they were making out like they had the privacy of a bedroom, except they were right there in the quad with a few other students. Near the rear of the Student Union at the cafe-style tables and chairs were set up, and a few people were gathered hanging out, having lunch, or just waiting in between classes.
She stopped walking and blinked her eyes to be sure she was seeing what she was seeing. Yes, she saw what she saw. Kenyon with his fine ass, kissing Brenna, the pretty and popular chick on the dance squad, the other Black girl on the squad.
"That motherfucker!" she mumbled to herself, just as Kenyon looked up and saw her watching. He mumbled something and then looked away. "Bitch ass."
Inside, her heart was crushed, but outside, she gave two-fucks and walked past them as if she did not see what she saw. This was why she could not take a boy like Kenyon seriously when he said she was the only one. She believed him, for a hot minute, but she was only a dumb broad for just about that much time.
"Hey Zav!" she heard when she reached the back entrance Student Union door.
She did not need to turn around to hear what kind of sorry excuse Kenyon would have. She quickened her step and entered the building, heading up the back stairs.
"Zav! Stop, let me explain."
Fuck no, no explanation needed. Her little legs could not get her up the stairs fast enough. He grabbed her arm and stopped her.
"Did you just grab me?" She snatched her arm away from him.
"Baby, I know you tripping, but let me explain."
"Explain what? You're not my man. You can shove your tongue down any little hoe's mouth you want." She turned to walk up the stairs to get to her office. She had work to do, not argue about something she had no right to be mad about. Kenyon was not her man, her boo, her bae, her boyfriend. He was a guy she was sleeping with, nothing more, nothing less.
"Come on Zav, stop." He pulled her in his arms, and she momentarily lost it, being that close to him and smelling him. "I'm sorry. Baby, I fucked up."
"No, you just didn't think I would find out how many other girls you have. I told you, it's whatever. Maybe I'm seeing someone else too."
"Zav, come on, stop saying that. You know I'm the only one for you. You're the only one for me." He tried to kiss her but she pushed him away.
"Boy, are you serious right now? You just kissed that bitch! Who do I look like?" She lowered her voice a bit as a short, red-headed girl, with glasses and carrying a ton of books walked down the steps, saw them, looked nervous, then walked around them to get down the stairs.
They were out in the open where anyone could walk in and see them. She had a reputation that she meant to keep, and not one sleeping with the male-whore on campus. This was getting to be too much for her.
"Zav, she kissed me. You didn't see what you think you saw."
She chuckled at him.
"Motherfucker you have me all fucked up. Your tongue was in her mouth, and vice versa. You swapped spit. You fucking kissed her and liked it and if I was not there to see, your ass would still play me for the fool. Anyway, I'm done here, I have to go."
"No, Zav just come over tonight, I'll make it up to you. I might have kissed her, but I ain't fucking her, I swear."
She could not believe she was still talking to this boy, in a stairway, where anyone could walk up on them. Her sorors, his frat brothers, anyone. She rolled her eyes at him. "Bye, Kenny. Don't fucking follow me."
She left him and went to her Student Government office. She took a deep breath to calm herself. No sex was that good she had to keep putting herself through that. Nope, she was done with Kenyon Barnes. He could have any girl on campus, let him go have them. Not her.
Kenyon kept trying to text her all day, but she kept deleting them.
Her head was down in her phone when she bumped into someone and looked up and saw Trinity Thomas standing in front of her.
"Hey, Trinity."
"Girl, what is your problem? Look where you are going!"
"Excuse me, my bad," she said, walking past her.
"Think you're all that because you won the little election. You still ain't nobody."
Zavrina stopped in her tracks and turned back to Trinity. She never had a problem with Trinity, but she always seemed to have a problem with her. She was dressed in all pink and looked like a damn cotton candy factory exploded. Cute girl, major attitude. Short like Zavrina, but dark-skinned with a babyface. Her hair was dark and long and down her back, all hers. She had deep dimples and looked like a petite Barbie doll. She did not look like she was twenty-two and a senior, she looked sixteen.
"I'm a nobody? I have never been a nobody, let's get that straight."
She flung her hair back as she talked. "I'm going to be the next school Homecoming Queen, I just put in my bid."
Like she had a chance, but good luck to her. "That's great Trinity, good luck."
She started to walk away again, but Trinity had to have the last word.
"Stay away from Cory."
She sucked her teeth and turned back to Trinity. Cory told her they had broken up at the party, now what was she talking about? Not that she cared, she did not want Cory.
"I don't want your little boyfriend. We're friends. If you have a problem with that, take that up with him, not me!"
Trinity and Cory had gone through the wringer more times than she and Kenyon, except their lives played out in public. Many public arguments and breakups, and many times they were back together and wrapped up in each other. She couldn't knock it, it was exactly what she went through with Kenyon.
"Would love for student government to support my bid."
"We can't support any candidate, Trinity, you know that, but like I said good luck. Bye!"
Today was not the day for her to get into it with Ms. Pretty and Perfect. Ugh! Pretty girls like her and Brenna made her feel self-conscious about her looks. She was just regular-looking, nothing special about her. She wondered what Kenyon saw in her when he could have Brenna or Trinity or other drop-dead pretty girls.
She checked her phone and saw another text from Kenyon.
Hey beautiful, I miss u
It was like he said what she needed to hear right then. She smiled and blushed reading his text.
