Chapter 37
It was 7:30Am in the morning.
Olivia could tell just what the time was the moment her phone started beeping and she found herself cutting her dreaming short to slowly reach for her phone from the bed. For some reason, she didn't even need to keep her eyes open to stop her alarm from going off but the moment she had found a way to open them, she couldn't hold back the large amount of light rays that found their way into her eye balls, making it even harder for her to fall back to sleep.
Her eyes were sore, just as much as her head was as she squeezed on to the bedsheets, giving herself a minute to take the fresh air and loud chirping of beds from the garden outside in, but somehow, she managed to pull herself up as gently as she could. She had gotten even more at alert the moment she had realized that Grace was not sleeping right beside her.
Where could she have been? Had she woken up earlier and made herself comfortable in Rafael's home already?
Olivia was terribly nervous and it was alarming how she suddenly didn't feel like going back to sleep anymore. She knew Grace missed being in the mansion so much, it used to be her home and Olivia knew just how much she must have loved to tour just to see just how much they had missed while they were away. On a regular day, and under a different circumstance, Olivia wouldn't have been so worried that she did, but this time, things were different. This time, Sommadina was just as much as a temporary housemate as they were, and if Olivia knew one thing, it was how much she and Rafael's mother never saw eye to eye, so much so that she had stoped trying.
The trial even made everything worse and threw away all chances of getting Sommadina to like her out the window. Everyday she breathed since the trial started, and with every second that passed, Sommadina did well to express her hate towards Olivia for allegedly breaking her family apart.
Olivia drew a deep breath as she raised a hand to her head to stop it from hurting so much the moment she felt a sharp migraine on her temples. She knew she had to at least find Grace first before Sommadina did but she wasn't able to think for so long before she heard a gentle knock on the door.
She turned to it slowly, wondering who it might have been. Was it Grace? Or Benita? Lucy or better still, Rafael? She squinted her eyes like she expected whoever it was from the other end to walk right in even without her asking them to. But they were right ahead of her, it was like the twins knew exactly what she was thinking the moment they opened the door and walked in without bothering to knock again.
Olivia blinked her eyes as she watched how the two boys walked into the room slowly with one of them holding on to a tray with plates on it, while the other walked right behind him with his hands stuck out like he was going to catch the first one if he ever fell.
Edwin and Edward.
Olivia had almost forgotten that Sommadina wasn't only the temporal house mate living at Rafael's house, his baby brothers, the twins, were also there too and as far as care could go, it looked like they showed a lot of it compared to Sommadina. Olivia let herself smile genuinely at the thought and sight of their effort to welcome her back even before they got to the bed. She got really impressed when she saw how Edward hurried to get the breakfast table from a corner and placed it in front of her just so Edwin could settle the fancy tray on it.
"Rise and shine." Edward greeted first as he turned quickly to Olivia as his chubby cheeks reddened while Edwin took off the lid from the plates just so Olivia could take in the sight of the perfectly made pancakes with a happy face drawn on them with honey.
"We made breakfast." Edwin turned to her too, making sure to pull his glasses up his nose bridge before they fell. He scrunched his nose too.
"Woah." Olivia pretended to be surprised for a second, making sure to show just how much she appreciated their efforts with the way she stared at the plate beside her. "I feel really honored that you both took your time to make me breakfast,"
"And in bed." Edwin added.
"And in bed." She confirmed just as the smile on her face widened.
"It was my idea." Edward said abruptly. Olivia raised her head to him
"Don't be selfish Edward." Edwin cut him off quickly. "It was both our idea."
Edward turned to Olivia and shrugged his shoulders.
"Well, I did most of the work."
Edwin furrowed his brows and turned to him in disbelief.
"No you didn't," he interrupted him. "All you did was play video games on your phone while I made the mix and Lucy helped me fry them."
Olivia pursed her lip and turned to Edward feigning disbelief. With the way he gasped at Edwin like he was surprised he ratted him out, before he slowly turned to her and met her gaze, she knew he wasn't going to deny it now that he had been caught.
"Well, didn't you always say that it was the thought that counts?"
Olivia chuckled.
She really enjoyed how silly they both were and how adorable they were when they argued about the littlest things. She had woken up to an extremely terrible headache and they had already made it go away with their bickering.
"Sure." Olivia said as she slowly reached for a fork from the plate, she was starving anyway. She got the knife up too and tried to take a slice out of her pancakes. She didn't have to look at them to see and feel how they were watching her closely to see if she liked it. The excited moan and her nod of approval gave them just the relief that they needed.
Edward raised his head to her quickly.
"Is it true?" He asked her. "Are you going to be here for good this time?"
Olivia didn't stop eating, she had underestimated how hungry she had actually been.
"I don't think so Eddy," Edwin told him as he kept his eyes on Olivia. "Nanny Benita did say that she was only going to be here for a while. She didn't come with a lot of bags even."
Olivia stuffed her mouth with pancakes right before she raised her head to look at them both, chewing on to the pancakes as greedily and fast as she could until she was done with the first slice. Edward inhaled sharply as he watched her in disbelief.
"I guess Lucy was right, ladies eat differently when they are pregnant." He turned to Edwin. "Do you think we should have made more?"
Edwin shrugged and turned slowly to watch Olivia who didn't stop eating.
"Well, I read somewhere that increased appetite during pregnancy is caused by a change in hormones due to the need for more nutrients by the little life inside."
"Little life inside?" Edward scoffed. "Who call it that? You mean the baby?" Edwin nodded just as Edward turned back to her. "Is it safe to eat this much? Safe for the baby?"
They were talking like she wasn't sitting right there. "Isn't it going to make the baby fat before it even comes out?"
"Well, he wouldn't be the only fat baby in our family. You and Rafael took the lead."
Olivia exhaled, and scoffed out a really silent laugh before she raised her head to them.
"I'm right here guys."
They both turned to her, Edward smiled brightly.
"Is it true?" He asked her, leaning closer to her with curiosity written all over his face and his eyes and smile becoming even wider.
"Are you pregnant for our older brother? Are we really going to be uncles?"
Olivia tried as hard as she could to hold back the laughter that threatened to escape from her lips. It made Edward pout.
"Come on, Rafael won't tell us anything." He said in almost a whisper.
Olivia had had just about enough of their mischief. She wasn't going to answer any more questions that would only stir up their curiosity, at least not until Rafael did. She clicked her tongue when she suddenly got hit with reality. She turned to Edwin immediately.
"What about Grace? Did you both happen to see her around the house?"
Edwin frowned and pushed his glasses up his nose bridge even further in disappointment.
"She's having breakfast downstairs with Nanny Benita." He answered, Olivia nodded in relief. That was good, anything was better than getting on Sommadina's nerves at that point. She let out a weak exhale, dropped her fork and knife into the tray and took a minute right before she raised her head to the boys. She smiled and stretched her arms
"Now tell me," she started. "What do you both need from me."
Edwin turned around quickly to back her just as Edward scoffed.
"Need?" He asked in a loud tone, he was trying to feign ignorance. "Why do you think we need anything."
"I know you two, and I know that bringing me breakfast in bed can't just be a welcome gift out of the goodness of your kind hearts,"
Edwin turned to Olivia quickly.
"Can you please talk our brother out of sending us to our Aunt's in Columbia?" He asked earnestly, staring into her eyes in such a way that it was hard for Olivia to look out of his. She wasn't sure what to say, that was so random. She found her head slowly going in Edward's direction.
Edward hurried to her immediately and grabbed her hand quickly.
"I know he's in a rough spot with Dad, and he's trying to protect us but we already lost all our friends because we've been away from the mansion for a while now. We can't lose our entire social life by doing what he wants." Edward shook his head.
Edwin hurried to her too and grabbed her other hand. Olivia turned to him quickly.
"You have to help us, he only listens to you."
She let out a weak exhale and pulled her hands quickly from both their holds.
"Time out." She announced as she shot her hands up in the air to stop them from saying anything else. They both froze. She exhaled and lowered her gaze back on them.
"Look guys, in as much as I would like to help you, I honestly don't think I need to." Edward held his breath. "I know you hate the idea, but I think your brother is right. Being here right now, with everything that's going on, it's really not safe or good for you both. I honestly think staying with your Aunt is what's best for you."
"Come-on!"
"But," Olivia cut Edward off before he said anything else. They both turned to her again. "I'd try to see if your brother can come to a compromise that you'd both be comfortable with."
"Yes!" Edwin jerked his hands slightly in the air to show triumph just as Edwin shut his eyes for a few seconds to show how relieved he was. Edward clapped his hand once in excitement as he strung from the bed and swirled once too.
He turned to Olivia and pointed at her.
"This is exactly why I like you, more than his grumpy first wife."
Olivia scoffed. She could feel a tingly sensation on her cheeks as she rolled her eyes. She couldn't believe how cheesy Edward was.
"But it's the truth." Edward folded his arms on his chest and pouted, "Constance only did what father wanted. If she was still here, Rafael would probably have never taken us out of the mansion because she'd find a way to take us right back to father if he asked her to. It was no wonder why she and Rafael were always at each other's necks."
Olivia frowned. She could feel how her brows carved in after hearing what he said. She needed some time to take it in. Was it true? Did Constance and Rafael really fight a lot?
It was crazy how no one ever talked about Constance in the mansion. Rafael never talked about their relationship either. She almost believed it was because he didn't want to be rude but it was almost as if it was more than that. She slowly turned to Edward and forced a smile.
"Did Rafael and Constance fight a lot while they were together?"
"Of course." Edward nodded and laughed. "There was barely a moment they didn't fight about the most random things."
"Really?" Olivia asked as Edwin moved closer to Edward nervously. "What kind of things?"
She could see how Edwin punched Edward, probably to stop him from saying too much and she could hear him whisper Edwards name too. Edward turned to him quickly.
"What? She's probably going to find out either way." Edward told him.
"It doesn't mean we should tell her. Rafael might not like that."
"She's going to talk to him remember? How do we expect her to help us if we don't trust her? Besides, what is she going to do about it?"
Their whispers were so loud, too loud that Olivia couldn't help but hear them argue between themselves. It was cute. She waited for them, they probably didn't realize how loud and obvious they were but she waited, at least until Edwin cleared his throat. She watched how they both turned to her.
"You promise you won't tell anyone that we told you," Edwin asked her.
Olivia chuckled
"What is it?" She asked.
"Constance didn't want Rafael to be a lawyer." Edward blurred out.
The room was filled with silence for a while. Olivia stared at the boys while they stared right back at her. It went on for about a few seconds before Olivia blinked
"That's it?" She raised a brow.
The fact that Constance and Rafael fought a few times was not news to her. Even though Rafael didn't say much about it, it wasn't exactly a secret.
"No, you don't understand," Edward took it upon himself to explain, drawing himself closer to Olivia till he was sitting right beside her. "They fought a lot, like a lot."
"Constance never wanted Rafael to be a lawyer," Edwin added. "She wanted him to work at the company instead."
Olivia scoffed
"But that doesn't make any sense, didn't they meet each other at law school?"
Edwin shrugged his shoulder.
"That was the crazy part, they did, but somehow, she started to hate him as a lawyer." Edward went on. "It all started on our seventh birthday dinner. They didn't let us stay while it happened but I remember Rafael was upset after he found out something Dad did. They started to fight more frequently right after."
Olivia frowned.
"That was the first time, the first time I ever saw Rafael so mad at Dad."
Olivia swallowed hard. She thought the fact that Constance fought a lot with Rafael was no news but hearing that Randal was somehow involved in it made her even more anxious. Did he have something to do with their deaths?
Edward pushed himself to Olivia and gave her a gentle tug. She turned to him slowly.
"You're still going to help us aren't you?" He twitched his brows.
Olivia forced a smile on her face. Not like she exactly had a choice, not with the way they looked at her. She felt how Edwin pushed himself to her and hugged her tight.
"I'm glad that you're back, really!" He let her go and she smiled genuinely. "Thank you Olivia."
