Chapter 39
The room was quiet the moment everyone heard the doctor's soft groan as he slowly stood straight from Rafael's bed, clearing his throat and finding his way to the mini crowd where Olivia stood biting her fingers,. She had the most worried look on her face just as well as everyone else.
"Miss Olivia," He focused his attention on her as he noticed how everyone else was looking at him for an update too.
"Doctor," Olivia pushed herself closer to him. "How is he?"
"Well," the man folded his stethoscope and then slowly handed it to the nurse beside him. "He doesn't look like he broke anything or hurt any vital organs. He just has a few bruises here and there that would heal soon. I'm going to prescribe some drugs to relieve him of the pains he's feeling. And then I would also suggest he starts his angina treatment again to avoid another attack. I can't say anything else is wrong for certain until he wakes but right now, he's resting and he should get plenty of it. I'm sure once we wakes, we can know what really happened to him and find the people that did this to him."
Olivia let out a frustrated exhale. She was honestly so confused. She had no idea what to do or how to help him. Seeing Rafael on that bed, not opening his eyes or making a move terrified her a lot.
"Thank you doctor." Tony stepped forward so Olivia didn't have to bother with him anymore. "Why don't I just see you off? We have one or two things to discuss."
The man nodded once and then headed towards Tony's direction as he led both of them out of the room.
"My poor child." Benita had tears in her eyes. "Who would do this to him? Who would want to harm him like this? He has always stayed away from trouble. He hasn't given anyone a reason to want him dead yet. Oh heavens."
"It's obvious Nanny." Amy cut in. "It has to be one of the bad guys or family of the bad guys Rafael put in jail that ambushed him like this. The kind of things he does is enough reason for anyone to want their pound of flesh. We are only lucky they didn't do the most. I'm sure once he wakes up, we can get the full story. You don't have to worry yourself."
Olivia forced a smile on her face and then turned to the round woman behind her.
"Nanny, Amy is right." She continued trying to sound as positive as she could. "I don't think we should worry anymore. I'm sure when Rafael wakes up, he'd let us know the identity of whoever that did this to him. And we'd make sure he or she is caught and punished."
Nanny Benita nodded, she wanted to believe in Olivia's words so much. She just knew she had to.
"Nanny," Lucy slowly reached for Benita's arm, her face brightening a lot. "Nanny, why don't we prepare all Sir Rafael's favorite dishes so he can eat them the moment he wakes?"
Benita nodded, slowly placing her hand on Lucy's, she rubbed them gently.
"Yes, yes, let's do that."
She let Lucy lead her away from the room just as Tony walked back inside. Olivia and Amy slowly turned to him just as Grace walked away from them and to the bed.
"Tony." Olivia exhaled as he got closer.
"Olivia,"
"Tony do you have an idea what would have happened? Who would have done this? Did Rafael ever mention to you about his life being threatened?"
Tony thought for a while.
"I don't think so." Tony told her. "Rafael never mentioned anything of such to me. He has always been so careful and good at protecting himself all the time. I just don't understand how this could happen to him."
This was getting so frustrating.
"God-daddy?"
Their attention got cut off the moment they heard Grace's tiny voice. They all turned slowly to the bed. "God-daddy what happened to you? Who hurt you like this? Why won't you wake up?" She sniffed as drops of tears began to fall from her face.
Olivia exhaled and then walked slowly to the bed.
"Grace," she leaned closer to her just as the small girl turned to Olivia.
"Mummy, what's wrong with my God father? Why won't he wake up?"
"Your God father just got attacked last night by some bad people. But he's resting right now. I'm sure he's going to wake up soon."
"Really?"
Olivia nodded.
"Really."
"Then can I stay here with him mummy?" She stared into Olivia's eyes. "Can I stay here with him until he wakes? I'd like to stay here and pray for him. I promise not to disturb him or make him uncomfortable."
"Grace," Olivia was going to reprimand her when she heard a tiny beep from her phone. It was a text message. She slowly reached for it and then glared at it for a while. Olivia blinked for a while just as she heard a soft moan from the bed. She quickly turned to the bed and so did everyone else.
"God-daddy!" Grace was so excited the moment Rafael slowly opened his eyes. He blinked twice, glaring at the ceiling, his eyes were trying to adjust to all that brightness.
"Rafael." Olivia hurried to the bed just as everyone else did.
"Brother," Tony leaned closer to the bed, a huge smile appearing on his face as Rafael slowly turned to him. "How are you feeling?"
Rafael turned away slowly and then tried to sit up a little bit before he groaned in pain. He couldn't. He was still so hurt from all that beating. He managed to pull himself up just a little bit.
"Stop trying." Olivia hurriedly rushed to stop him. He slowly turned to her. "You went through an ordeal. The doctor recommended bed rest for a while."
Rafael glared at her just as everything started to replay in his head again. It was like he was reliving what had happened to him the day before. He could remember everything. Everything he discovered.
It was his family. His family killed her parents. His family ruined her life. He could remember.
Rafael slowly turned to her hand on his. He glared at them for a while and then quickly pulled his hand away from hers, swallowing hard on his saliva. Olivia frowned just a little bit, wondering what she did wrong.
"God-daddy?" He slowly turned back to Grace who just pushed herself closer to her. "What happened to you? Are you really sick?"
Rafael forced a tiny smile on his face and then lowered his gaze to her.
"Did I scare you?" He asked her just as Grace exhaled. Rafael turned to the rest of them. "I'm sorry I scared all of you like this."
"Olivia could barely sleep the whole night." Amy added. "I was worried she was going to worry herself to death. What exactly happened to you?"
Rafael chuckled nervously.
"I just got attacked by a group of petty thieves on my way home last night." He lied. "I wasn't able to see their faces but they left the moment I gave them some money."
Tony exhaled.
"Thank God you're fine man, you didn't hurt any vital parts."
Rafael managed to retain the smile on his torn lip. He looked away from them slowly, burying his gaze on the sheets. He could feel Olivia's gaze on him but he just couldn't bring himself to look back at her. He was scared the moment he did, he was going to start being dramatic again.
"We should give you both some time." Tony suggested, giving Amy a soft tap. "We should uh, go help Nanny Benita get everything ready for lunch."
Amy nodded in a hurry.
"That's true." She snapped and then turned to Grace. "Come on Grace," she stretched her hand to Grace. "Let's help Nanny set the table."
Grace slowly got up from the bed just as Olivia gave her a tiny kiss on her forehead.
"Go on."
Grace hurried to Amy and took her hand and Amy led them away from the room. Rafael had his eyes focused on the door. He was going to keep looking at it even if they left. He needed any reason he could get to avoid having any sort of eye contact with Olivia.
He could hear her soft sigh as she slowly made herself comfortable on his bed. Rafael slowly turned to her on reflex. He had to.
"How are you feeling?" She pushed herself closer to him.
"I'm fine." He lied. "It looks like I gave everyone quite a fright last night. Especially you."
"What exactly happened to you Rafael? The things you said at the shower. Why did you keep apologizing to me?"
"Oh," Rafael stammered. "That, I was just-" he exhaled thinking of what to say. He was really a terrible liar. He was never good at telling lies. Maybe he should tell her. Rafael was sure just how telling her could destroy everything, it could destroy everything between them but still he couldn't shake off the feeling that she deserved to know. He wasn't going to be the one to lie to her or deceive her especially after all he had just come to know.
"Olivia, the truth is-"
"You don't have to tell me." Olivia pushed herself even closer, cutting him off. "You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to. If you're not comfortable with talking about it now, then I'd wait until you are comfortable with talking about it."
She slowly reached for his hands.
"I'm just happy you're okay." A tiny smile appeared on Olivia's face, brightening every second. Rafael looked at her. His heart was breaking all over again. He couldn't bear to watch her smile at him the way she used to. He didn't deserve it. He had lost every right to see her smile. He could feel his tear glands act weird again. He inhaled and then slowly pulled his hands away from hers.
"I uh-" He started. "I need to rest." He rose his face to hers, forcing a smile on his face. "I'm still a bit exhausted and I'd like to rest. I'd like to be alone if you don't mind."
Olivia blinked twice and then shook her head.
"Of course." She slowly got up and then took a deep breath. "I'd just join everyone else with preparing lunch."
Rafael was barely listening to her now. He gently laid down on his bed again, pulling his blanket above his shoulders and turning away from Olivia. He was trying to avoid any form of direct contact. He shut his eyes.
He could hear Olivia's sigh as she slowly made her way away from the bed and then to the door, not bothering to look back for a second.
Rafael held his breath until he heard the door close gently. He slowly opened his eyes and then let out a soft exhale.
