Chapter 61
Three days later...
"Take it easy." Oliver held on tight to Grace as she helped her get out of the car while Amy helped Lucy and the driver take their things out of the car's boot.
"Just take it upstairs please." She told them.
"Woah," Grace exclaimed in excitement, turning around to stare at the big house just as the car drove away. "Mum," She quickly turned to Olivia, grabbing her hand. Olivia looked at her, a tiny smile on her face
"Are we really going to live here? All of us?"
"Uh," Olivia started. She wasn't sure she knew how to answer that
"Yes, we will." Benita said as she walked out of the house with a huge smile on her face. Olivia turned to look at her, Grace too.
"Cool," Grace turned back to Olivia, she was so amazed. "Mum," she grabbed her arm gently "Can I go in? I really want to take a tour, please, please, please." She pouted, giving Olivia the puppy eyes, Olivia scoffed playfully.
"Only if you promise not to run on the stairs."
"I promise," Grace clapped her hands together. "Now can I?"
Olivia pouted, pretending to think for a while before she exhaled.
"Fine."
Grace chuckled and then ran to the door, before she could say anything else. she rushed in.
"Grace, I thought we said no running!" Olivia yelled after her but she was far gone. She slowly turned to Amy and raised her brows.
"What?"
Olivia raised her brows again, Amy rolled her eyes. She knew exactly what Olivia was trying to say, why did it have to be her all the time?
She turned to the door,
"Wait for me Grace!" She yelled at the top of her lungs, rushing to the door too. Olivia heard Benita chuckle softly as they drew their attention back to each other. Olivia exhaled as she watched Benita slowly reach for her hands
The birds were chirping in the air, the smell of the fresh roses from the garden, mixing with it.
"How are you holding up my child?" She asked. Olivia stiffened visibly and faked a smile.
"I don't know Nanny." She pursed her lip. "But I'll be fine."
She had to be.
Benita nodded. She slowly reached for her apron and got out a white envelope from it's pocket.
"I was arranging his things when I came across this." She said as Olivia's gaze narrowed on the envelope.
"It has your name on it so I'm guessing he left it for you." She gave it to Olivia. Olivia's hands shook as she slowly reached for the envelope, glaring at it. She was confused.
She slowly took it from Benita.
She was right, her name was on it and it was Rafael's writing. All she could do was stare at it.
"I'd just let you be." Benita told her and turned to the door. Olivia didn't even notice how she got in. Olivia took a deep breath, as the voices in her head told her to.
Did she really want to know?
Did she really want to put herself through all the pain and heartaches she had been through the past three days? It had been so hard, so hard getting herself to move on but she knew she had to because her daughter was counting on her to. Did she really want to put herself in that place all over again?
Olivia drew a deep breath as she slowly reached for the seal. She tore the envelope open and slowly reached for the paper inside of it.
But still a big part of her wanted to know, wanted to feel him one more time. A big part of her wanted to know what his last words to her were, she slowly opened the letter.
"Dear Olivia,"
Olivia drew a sharp breath as she felt her heart begin to ache again. It was just as she remembered, his writing.
"If you're reading this, it means I'm not there anymore, I'm not there to help you, I'm not there to protect you,"
Tears welled up in her eyes
"But protecting yourself is something you must do now, not just for yourself but for your daughter. You're the only one she can look up to, the only one that can teach her to live, and to love and to embrace her mistakes just as you did, and also to learn that certain people come into our lives, not just to break us and hurt us but also to love us, change us, help us and build us."
Tears welled up in her eyes. God, she was really going to break her heart again all by herself but she didn't stop anyway. Olivia shut her eyes for a second, trying so hard to muster up enough courage to go on. She opened it again and turned to the paper.
"I might not have been the man you wanted me to be, I might not have been there the way you wanted me to, but right from the very first time I met you in that room, I always wanted to know you."
Olivia felt a cold breeze pass through her spine the moment she heard the words in the paper coming to life. It was like a voice in her head was reading it out loud to her, his voice.
"They say that if you say something often enough, you eventually get tired of saying it. God knows just how many times I fell asleep saying your name, just to get you out of my head."
Olivia choked back a sob, a smile finding its way to her lips. "I knew it right from the start, that you were going to mean so much to me and it scared me, too much. You made me feel like it was okay, like it was okay to embrace my past, like it was okay to breathe. I cherished every moment I spent with you, even the times I pretended not to, even the times I pretended like I didn't care and I asked you to go away, I'm grateful you didn't listen. You're a strong woman Olivia, one of the strongest I've ever met and you're going to be a great mother. Just like you told me, don't let your past be a limitation to your future. You're a good woman and as corny as it sounds, the world is lucky to have you in it. You may never forgive me for the choices I made, but I want you to believe me when I say I never meant to hurt you. Thank you for making the last few weeks of my life worth it." Her hands were trembling at this point. She was crying so hard, she didn't think she could read the remaining contents of the letter.
How could he be so selfish?
How could he have been so inconsiderate?
If she wasn't so lost in her own world, she would have heard the footsteps approaching her from behind. She would have noticed the change in the scent of the air around her. If she wasn't so lost in her own thoughts, she would have felt the familiar presence behind her.
"Olivia."
She froze, feeling her body grow numb.
"Olivia." He called again.
This time, she was sure she heard him. She whirled around slowly, her breathing uneven. He took a step towards her but she cringed back. She had to be seeing things.
"How-" She chocked. "Rafael." His name was heavy on her tongue. It was the first time she had said his name since what happened. "How?" She asked again. It was hard, hard to wrap the vision of him around her head.
"You left, you left me." She breathed. He took a step towards her, and she let him. All he could do was stare at her for the first few seconds. He reached for her hand but she pulled away before he could touch her.
Rafael paused for a second and exhaled.
"You asked me something on that yacht, you asked me if your love for me wasn't enough reason to make me change my mind, I should have given you my answer then and there."
He paused. She pursed her lip and then looked away, it was too much for her to handle.
"Love me, Olivia." His words caused her to look up at him. "Be with me, please." He looked her straight in the eyes. "Because I do, I love you, so much that I fear I'm losing my mind. " He leaned closer, connecting his forehead with hers. "So just-" he paused. "Love me and I'd never let you go. I'd never let you go again." He said weakly.
"You are so selfish." She breathed. "You are such a bad person."
"I know."
"You put me through so much." She sniffed. "I
thought you-" She stopped. The rest of her words drying in her throat. "Rafael, I mourned you." She breathed, grabbing as fistful of his shirt. "It was so hard for me."
"I want us to start over, to be the man you want me to be, if you'd let me, if you'd have me-"
Olivia sniffed as she stood on her toes and then pressed her lips against his. She kissed him passionately, clinging on as tight as she could to him while he wrapped his hands around her waist, pushing her closer to him, holding on as tight as he could to her, not daring to let go.
This was it, all he had ever hoped for. This was what true happiness was begging to feel like, true peace. She was the one, she was the one he had been waiting for all those years. It wasn't just coincidence, it was fate.
Right there, right then, that moment, it was where he was, where he was supposed to be.
That was his happiness.
He slowly let her go as a drop of tear fell from his eyes. Olivia slowly reached for it, she wiped it off gently as he exhaled.
"I'll never let you go."
He loved this woman, he really did.
"Nice lawyer!"
They both turned to the house as Grace ran out as fast as she could with a tiny doll in her hands, her tiny legs running to them, Olivia chuckled as Rafael slowly bent over and stretched his hands so Grace could run into them just as everyone else rushed out too with heavy smiles on their faces.
Of course they knew.
Olivia watched Rafael lift Grace up, exchange hi fives just as he kissed her on the cheek. Olivia leaned closer to them so Rafael could embrace her too, they looked so so happy. Amy, Benita and Lucy rushed to join in too.
Rafael was happy, all those people, they were his home, his family.
Olivia slowly turned to him, she had the happiest look on her face, the longest smile anyone had ever seen her on.
He smiled back at her.
That woman right there, she was the one, the one he had been waiting for. She was his happiness.
She slowly reached for his hands and wrapped hers inside.
"I love you." He whispered to her
He really did.
He loved her with all of his heart and she knew it. She could feel it.
Olivia let out an exhale.
She was happy. This was everything she had always wanted, everything she had dreamt of. She looked at them, every one of those people surrounding her with so much happy smiles on their faces.
This was it.
This was her home, they were all her home.
Her peace, her happiness and she was never going to let go of it. She was going to hold on to those memories, to cherish that moment forever.
She exhaled just as Rafael gave her a soft kiss on her forehead
He was her home.
