Chapter 30
"Due to insufficient and inconsistent evidence brought to this court against the accused, on case two-zero-one-three-five-one-four, this court hereby declares and affirms that Ms Olivia Silver is not guilty of the murder of her late husband, Andrew Silver. The court has acknowledged that she has failed in her duties to exert fair justice and protect the masses and due to her incompetencies, an innocent woman was let to face trial and jail time for a crime she did not commit. We can't bring back the six years taken from you Ms Silver, but what we can do is remove all criminal records about you regarding this case, hoping it would help you a lot in finding yourself and bringing the pieces of your life back together again. We sincerely apologize for all the troubles we put you through and this court would not rest till the real murderer of your husband is brought to book."
Olivia stopped listening to whatever it was the judge was talking about after the first two sentences. At that moment the judge had announced her freedom, all she could think of was getting to the little girl who just stared at her all through in court.
Olivia couldn't take off the excitement and smile in her expression. The thought that she was finally given a chance to be reunited with all she had lost was all she could think about.
Her daughter.
That little six year old standing right in the middle of that courtroom, with her bright eyes, staring right into Olivia's, lightening up every inch of Olivia's body.
But Victoria saw, and she was disgusted. The thought of Olivia ever getting her freedom disgusted her so badly that she couldn't stand to watch all that reunion even as Amy, Tony and Kemi rushed towards her as soon as the judge exited from the court room.
Like she had anyone else that cared about what happened to her besides them.
The smile on Olivia's face disappeared the moment she saw Victoria bend over to the little girl and whisper something to her. She watched the small girl nod faintly just as a man in a suit walked up to them.
Olivia could recognize that man.
It was the chauffeur, Victoria's chauffeur. Of course he had to be the one playing the nanny role especially since the woman that had walked in with the child before was taken away by the police earlier.
They were going to take the girl away. They were taking her child away from her again. Olivia watched the man stretch his hands a little so she could put her tiny hands in them.
"No," Olivia whispered the moment she saw them both walking out of the courtroom
"No!" She yelled, taking everyone's attention to what was happening as she quickly pulled herself away from the tiny crowd surrounding her, hoping she was going to make it on time to yank her daughter's hands from that man and bring her home with her.
"Olivia!" Amy yelled as she and the rest ran after her who obviously wasn't paying attention to anything else.
"Wait!" Olivia yelled to the man the moment she was right outside that courtroom, neglecting all the media and press that had ran to her that moment, trying to push her way through them and all their annoying questions to her daughter but they crowded her.
"Please wait," she tried to beg them "Just hold on."
They were so many for her to control. Olivia could feel herself running out of breath the further those two were away from her.
"I need to get to her." She really wished they were listening to her but they weren't and before Olivia knew it, there was no one there, not the little girl and definitely not the driver.
Where did they go?
She asked herself, looking around the large hallway, hoping she was going to catch a glimpse of them around.
"Olivia!" She turned quickly at the sound of Amy's voice just as the rest ran to meet up with her. Amy shook her head a little bit, worry and fear written all over her face. She was trying to stop her.
Olivia's heart was racing. She was so upset and confused, she didn't know what to do, at least not until the devil walked out of that room.
Olivia could feel her fist tighten the moment Victoria walked away from the courtroom with Austin right beside her, adjusting her neatly folded hollandaise so it could sit pretty across her breasts.
Olivia was sick of it, sick of all of it and before she knew it, she was taking a step towards them and then another but she wasn't as fast as Victoria. Before anyone knew it, the two ladies were only a step away from each other, glaring at themselves with so much scorn and disgust in their eyes.
The noise from the press subsided after a few seconds. It was like they were all ready for
the heat that was about to come.
One by one, they raised their cameras so they could capture the moment. They wanted to record every part of it.
"So," a tiny smile appeared on Victoria's face just as she eyed Olivia from head to toe, her disgust really visible now. Her eyes rested on the neck of Olivia's jumpsuit and then finally drawing back to her face, "You're free at last."
"Where is she?" Olivia demanded to know, toughening her voice just so Victoria could know how serious she was "I'm asking where you're taking my daughter to?"
Victoria scoffed
"I know you hate me, and you probably hate the fact that I'm not the person you wanted me to be so badly, your sons killer, and I can never blame you for any of it Victoria but I swear to God, the moment you lay a finger or try to hurt my child, I would-"
"You would what?" It only took a second for the smile on Victoria's face to be completely vanish and get covered by a large frown. "Kill me? Just like you killed my son?"
"I didn't-"
"Kill my son?" Victoria cut her off.
"Mother," Austin walked as fast as he could to the both of them. If no one was going to stop them from saying a lot of things they might regret later on camera, he knew he had to be the man. "Mother," he gently reached for Victoria's arm "Mother that's enough. Let's go now."
Victoria yanked her arm away from Austin's hand as soon as she could
"You don't think i believe that nonsense your lawyer was able to prove in court today do you?" Her eyes glaring into Olivia's "I'm way smarter than you think Olivia and I'm sure everyone else in that room is too, every one in this country knows all that was a sham. You killed my son and I know it. How do I know? It's because you're a bad person. You are full of so much negativity and bad luck. You killed my son and then you got a very good lawyer to cover your tracks,"
Olivia scoffed
"But I'm no fool and I can't be rid of that easily. I'm not going to stop until I make you pay for what you did even if it means bringing anyone that stands with you down in the process, because people like you, don't deserve a second chance. Oh God, I'm going to make you wish you had died in that car accident together with your parents years back-"
"Mother." Austin whispered as the cameras began to flicker more.
"I am going to ruin you and take everything you love away from you and even if I do, it's not going to ever be enough for what you took from me-"
Olivia exhaled
She wished she was in the mood to hear all those same words she had heard before again.
"Take a look around Victoria," Olivia said following her own instruction as she gestured to the media standing right there. "As far as I, and everyone else in this room is aware, right now, there's only one murderer here and she she's not me."
Victoria scoffed.
"You little brat!" She yelled and pushed Olivia. Olivia fell quickly to the ground, bruising her arm the moment it came close to the cold tiles.
"Olivia!" Amy and Kemi came running to her to see if she was okay. "Are you okay?" They asked her as she tried to pull herself up from the ground. Olivia inhaled sharply the moment she raised her body from the ground. She dusted her arm to take off the sand on it
Victoria's loud chuckle drew everyone's attention back to her. She couldn't help herself as she kept apologizing at intervals, trying to stop herself.
"Mum come on," Austin whispered to her, pulling her arm again. He had had enough
"Six whole years and nothing has changed." Victoria said finally coming to a stop with her outrageous laughter. "Six years and you're still the same weakling I've always known. Even jail couldn't toughen you up a little."
Olivia glared at her In frustration.
"You're still so fragile, still a filthy weakling. It's really disgusting."
"You know what?" Amarachi got up quickly and hurried as fast as she could to Victoria.
"Amarachi," Olivia managed to call "Stop."
"No," she slowly turned to Victoria "I've had enough of this woman's irritating ego."
Victoria sneered.
"Who are you again?"
"You," Amarachi glared at her "Just because my sister is good at taking all your nonsense doesn't mean I should, I'm not that tolerant." She told her, anger evident in her eyes. "I won't stand for it. Your kind, rich people like you make me sick to my bones. What kind of a person are you? What kind of a mother are you!" Amarachi yelled at the top of her lungs.
"Of course yell ." Victoria cut her off "It's all you wretched folks are ever good at, yelling and complaining about everything." Victoria looked her straight in the eye. "If it bothers you so much, why don't you join her?"
"What?"
"You would look perfect right there," she gestured to Olivia "Right beside her, on the ground, where free loaders and beggars like you really belong."
Amarachi took a step closer
"Why don't you say that again and let's see who'd be next to fall to the ground?" She asked Victoria just as a couple men, dressed in suit surrounded them. Of course she brought her bodyguards to court. Everyone moved back in fright at that moment, everyone except Amarachi. She looked at the men then right back at Victoria.
"You were saying?" Victoria asked her, a tiny smile appearing on her face now. Amarachi bit hard on her lip. She had a lot to say, she wanted to say so much but the situation she was in didn't permit her.
Victoria scoffed
"I thought as much." She told her then she took a step forward. "Get out of my way."
She placed a finger on Amarachi's arm and pushed her shoulder hard enough to push her out of the way.
Olivia got up quickly
"You don't need her." She yelled as loud as she could, loud enough to bring Victoria to a halt. "I can't be grateful to you enough for looking after her all the time I was in jail but I'm out now. You don't need to take care of her anymore. Let me have my daughter back, please."
Victoria didn't turn for a second.
She didn't even bat an eye lid.
She walked away
"Victoria!" Olivia ran out after her
Everyone else joined, everyone including the media.
"Ms Silver, now that you're out, do you have any plans to catch your husbands real murderer and clear your name?"
"Ms Silver are you going to file for sole custody of your daughter?"
"Ms Silver could you please shed more light about what happened to you before the Silver's foundation found you?"
"Ms Silver! Ms silver!"
Olivia could hardly concentrate on anything else. All the press surrounding her made it so hard for her to focus on Victoria's car or even chase after it the moment it drove off. They got outside the compound.
"Ms Silver- Ms Silver!"
"Please stop." Olivia tried to beg them. She couldn't take all that yelling and microphones. It was just that moment she noticed all the flickering lights on her. "Stop please." She whispered as they kept pushing themselves on her. Where were all the police men that were supposed to see to it that she left the court room safe? Had they left her to deal with all of that alone?
"Murderer!" Olivia felt a stone come in contact with her arm after she heard a woman yell, and then another. She turned to look at the tiny woman dressed in a shiny top with a wrapper folded around her big waist. "We know the truth. Your lies can't fool us!" Yet another stone
"Hey!" Tony rushed to the woman, trying to get her to stop but she took off. He went after her.
"Stay away from her." Kemi rushed to the crowd, raising her ID card so they could see she was an officer of the law. "Kemi Oluade." she showed them. "I'm with the police. Step away or we'd be suing all your media houses-"
Just as Kemi was still addressing the press, Olivia's attention drew to the screeching sound of car tires as an a two-twenty 4matic sedan drove right beside the crowd, close enough to Olivia.
The back door opened quickly just as the drivers window wound down.
"What are you waiting for?!" Susan yelled from inside the car. "Get in!"
Saved by the bell.
Olivia took a quick step to the car, she was really close now, then she stopped.
She took a deep breath.
Her heart was racing faster. She had her eyes focused at the back seat. She didn't blink for a second.
Tiny sparks of memories began to cloud her head . Memories from twenty three years ago. At that very moment it was like she was relieving that day. She couldn't move or breathe no matter how much she tried to.
Blurry Visions of her parents' faces the moment they realized that truck was headed in their direction. It was all coming back. She could remember how fast the truck was and she shook hard the moment she remembered how it came in contact with the car.
Olivia cringed back in fear. She took another step back, staring at the back seat. She couldn't. She couldn't go in there, she couldn't be in there.
"Ms Silver," she could hear Susan's voice try to stop her from taking another step back but she couldn't control herself anymore. She was willing to let the crowd eat her than be inside that car and the moment she took another step back, she felt a hand engulf hers. A bigger hand, a really strong hand.
Olivia felt her heart stop beating for a second.
It was like everything went still the second she inhaled the strong but yet sweet smell of his perfume.
She slowly turned as Rafael held on tight to her hand. His hands felt so cold and yet, so warm too. She wanted to speak but she stuttered when she tried. His eyes were focused on the car and then he took a step to it, and then another, pulling her behind him till they were close.
For a second it was like there was no one there anymore. She felt so invincible and strangely comfortable right there. Nothing else mattered. Not the sounds of the flickering camera, not the sound of the persistent media, nothing.
Rafael slowly turned to look at her then he exhaled loudly. That was the first time, the first time she had really payed attention to his physic. He was really tall. Way taller than she thought. She couldn't even comment in her head how beautiful this man right beside her was, how safe his presence immediately made her feel
"It's okay." He told her and at that moment, her heart began to beat again. Her heartbeat was steady. Her hands weren't shaking anymore, her head wasn't spinning anymore. Calm. She was calm.
For some reason she believed this man standing beside her. She trusted him. It was okay to get into the car. She could feel it.
She took a step towards the car and then another, holding his hand all the way. He gently helped her get in. She kept her eyes focused on the driver's chair in front of her. She didn't want to make the whole situation look so awkward. He slowly let go of her hand and shut the door just as Tony rushed to it, Amarachi too.
"She's still in shock." He told them. "But we need to take her back to the prison to finalize her release and get her things, we'd figure everything else after that."
Tony nodded.
"Sure. That's alright. We'd be right behind you."
Rafael nodded. He turned to join her in the car
"And Ralph?"
Rafael slowly turned the moment Tony called him.
"Thank you brother."
He smiled faintly and then turned back to the car. He hurried towards the other side, opened the door and walked in.
The car drove off quickly .
