Chapter 6

Lucas spent another day, stuck in the office for his duty as usual. He stared at the broken watch on his wrist and whined as he was bored to death. It had been a week since he interacted with Leila. He had seen not seen or heard any sign of her since then.

He felt empty inside. He wanted to just knock on her door and barge inside but that would just literally mean he had broken the law and he would be exiled. That would be the last thing he wanted and pushed that out of his plan.

He erased his thoughts and continued to look at his watch. He examined it closely and noticed a crack on the watch. He thought it was a dust or something so he tried wiping it off but it did not go away even after a couple of times. It really is a crack. He wondered why Leila would give him a broken watch.

It was not working and it also had a crack. He recalled what happened the previous night. The moment Leila appeared, the hands of the watch moved on its own as if it was brand new. It seemed like this watch could do something amazing like controlling time.

He remembered Aaron telling him that he would meet Leila the moment it starts ticking. He searched for buttons that could make it move but failed completely.

He sighed and thought of how this little broken watch could work normally without anything done to it and how Leila appeared the exact moment it started ticking. He tried to connect the dots together but could not come to a conclusion. It was weird how everything linked to Leila seemed magical.

She felt different from other Galaxians. He did not know how to put it but she just gave off a different vibe.

While he was deep into thoughts, someone patted his shoulder which made him jump out of fear.

He turned around saw Jacob waving at his face.

"Dude, please knock next time," he said as he tried to calm himself down.

Jacob laughed and shook his head as he saw his expression. He noticed that Lucas was started to get embarrassed due to his non-stop laughter. He tried to stop himself from continuing and apologized as he handed him some papers to acknowledge.

Jacob stared at him while he was signing the papers. "So, how was your date? You guys meeting again?"

Before he could ask another question, Lucas shoved the signed papers at his face.

"Yes the date was fancy and she did say we would meet again...." he paused before continuing and let out a sigh, "Probably."

Jacob raised his eyebrow, definitely not satisfied with his answer. It drove his curiosity even more.

"Do you not like her?"

Lucas looked at him dumbfounded and shook his head, "She's gorgeous. Perfect to be exact. There's nothing I can dislike about her." I might even love her.

Jacob asked what the problem was then. Lucas licked his dried lips and fiddled with his fingers nervously, "I'm just afraid I won't get to meet her again."

Jacob knew exactly what he meant. Who was he kidding? The woman he was talking about is Leila Song, the Guardian of the Night. She's rarely seen out of her office and she was just way too mysterious to begin with. Even when Jacob had to take over her duty, he had to use the control system at Aaron's room.

Despite that, he knew how much Lucas had wanted to meet her. He always talked about her when he had the chance and now that he finally got the chance, he really did not want that opportunity to get ruined.

"It'll work out somehow," he assured him with a pat on his back. He tried to comfort him so that he would cheer up. Lucas gave him a nod in response and smiled. Hopefully.

He was not really sure if he should just accept the fact that it will happen one day like she said or the fact that it will not happen ever again. The second fact seemed to be more realistic but he wanted to believe in the first one.

Just like that Lucas's duty ended. It ended way earlier than expected since Ryan came and took over his duty as the weather in the human world was supposed to be cloudy.

When Ryan headed over to his office, he also asked the same questions as Jacob and had the same reaction as him. He also encouraged him to not feel down just like Jacob. Even though the two of them have very different personalities, they cared for him just the same.

He left the office since he did not want to be a distraction to Ryan. With nothing better to do, he decided to stop by the library along the way. The quiet and calming atmosphere in the library made it a perfect place for him to free himself from all thoughts. He went through different shelves, searching for books to read.

He selected several books and searched for a seat. The library was crowded with people so he had to walk around couple times.

He finally found one at the corner which was isolated and blocked by different shelves. It was hidden deep inside the library so it was often not spotted. He walked past the several tables and settled down there.

Little did he know that when someone had arrived, the hands of his watch had started to move.

Soon, he became engrossed in reading his book that he did not notice a person standing in front of him. He flinched when he heard a knock on the table. Slowly putting his book down, his eyes widened and the corner of his lips immediately quirked up when he realized who it was. Leila.

"Can I join?"

He nodded so fast that his neck could break and cleared a seat for her. Smile still smeared across his face. He really didn't expect to see Leila this soon. He believed she was supposed to be doing her duty.

"What are you doing here? No duty today?"

"It's too early for my duty," she replied.

He had totally forgotten that he had ended early. He rubbed his neck, feeling stupid that he actually asked her.

"Right."

He really did not have much to say. In fact, he could not think of anything to say. He really wasn't expecting to meet her here but he was definitely glad. Leila noticed how he was still surprised by her sudden appearance.

"I told you we would meet one day."

He coughed to hide his embarrassment. It seemed like he was being too obvious. After a while, they went back to reading. However, Lucas could not focus at all. He kept on glancing over at Leila several times and observed her facial features.

She looked so perfect. Too perfect like an angel that fell from the sky. He could feel his heart beating faster and faster. His palms felt wet from sweating nervously as his body started to heat up. He clenched on the corners of the book he was holding to calm himself down. He had never felt this way before but he knew exactly what was happening.

"Are you ok?"

She sounded worried and glanced up from her book. He swallowed thickly and gave her a weak smile trying to convince her that he was fine. She moved in closer to him and placed her hand on his forehead to feel his temperature. His heart skipped a beat when he realized that their faces were too close.

He got so tensed and brushed her off gently. He only managed to breathe when she backed off a bit.

"I'm fine. Really."

She sighed and smiled, not wanting to force him to tell the truth.

"If you say so," She glanced over at his watch and got up, "I need to go for my duty."

'Already?' he thought.

He hated how time would always flew by just like that but he just nodded since it was not something he could control. He was about to stand up to send her off but she stopped him.

"It's fine. My office is just around the corner."

He really wanted to see her off but decided to respect her decision instead.

He exhaled deeply after she had left. He placed a hand on his chest and could still feel his heartbeat pumping rapidly. He glanced over at the window beside him and saw the blue sky transforming into beautiful night sky.

"I didn't expect it to turn out this way," he mumbled as he stacked his books. He noticed another book at the side.

Leila seemed to have forgotten to keep her book back so he reached out for it. He read the title and blushed. He bit his lower lip and couldn't stop smiling.

The Beautiful Morning Blue Sky.

It was the book he had written as an assignment during his final school term and it was also the book that got him this job. Based on this, he could tell that Leila seemed to have at least a slight interest in him. Just thinking of it made him extremely happy.

He stretched his arms and swung his hand so suddenly that it ended up hitting the corner of the table. He wanted to scream out loudly but he was in the library so he ended up swallowing the pain.

He heard something cracked and noticed bits of glass dropped on the floor.

He looked at his hand and went into a shock when he realized that his watch was broken. He could not believe that he broke the watch that Leila gave him which was the only way to meet her again.
