Chapter 14

Just as Lucas was about to pull the trigger of the gun, Leila slapped him in his face which brought him back his consciousness. He gasped when he saw Aaron with bruises on his face, flat on the floor and dropped his gun.

Leila glanced at Aaron and signaled something. He read her eyes and stood up.

"I get it. Just make sure you get back on time for your duty," he told her before disappearing into the thin air.

Leila walked towards Lucas and picked his gun up. Lucas was still shocked and stood frozen.

"We need to talk," She placed the gun in his palm and pulled him by the wrist.

"Ouch! Don't be so rough and it's just a scratch."

Leila rolled his eyes and continued treating his wounds. They were sitting at the watch shop and Alex had left them alone while he went to make tea for them.

She purposely hit it harder the second time which caused him to wince in pain. She glared at him just as he was about to complain.

"Who asked you to fight?"

"I don't know," He grinned and rubbed the back of his neck.

"So where does it hurt?"

He pointed at his red cheek where Leila slapped him.

"This place hurts the most though."

Leila could not believe he could still joke despite all those wounds. She sighed and placed ice on his cheek to reduce swelling, "You deserved that."

He could not help but laugh as she nagged him. He found it so cute. But then he stopped as he felt pain in his jaw due to the punches Aaron threw at him.

Sudden realization hit him and he started searching for something nervously. He looked so worried that Leila started to notice it as well. She took out the feather from her pocket and showed it to him.

"Looking for this?"

"Thank god! You had it. I thought I lost it."

Leila giggled and passed it back to him.

"Back then I really thought you would have killed him."

Lucas knew that he was not being himself back then. It was unusual of him to let his anger take over.

"You have a much worser anger management issues than Aaron."

"You don't have to be so blunt," Lucas sounded hurt but she just stuck her tongue out and continued treating him.

"Don't you have duty today?"

It was already night time which meant time for her duty and he clearly remembered that Aaron told her to not be late.

Leila looked at the sky through the window beside them and realized how dark the sky had become. She held her hand up and twirled her fingers which made the stars twinkle and the moon rose up brightly in the sky.

"Done," she hummed while Lucas just stared at her with his mouth hanging.

"This just amaze me every time."

Leila giggled shyly at his reaction and cleared her things. He observed her in awe and then at the sky. Things that Aaron told him suddenly flashed through his mind. He wanted to ask her but just sighed instead.

Leila clearly noticed that Lucas was worried about something.

"Is something wrong?"

She noticed that he was hesitating and that was not what she wanted. She wanted him to feel comfortable and speak up his mind freely according to his wishes.

"It's ok. Feel free to ask."

"Well, are you hiding something?"

She bit her lower lip and her face darkened a bit. She tried to smile but she seemed to have lost all her energy. Lucas knew she was forcing it so that he would not regret asking her.

"Did Aaron tell you something?"

He scratched his nose and nodded, "He told me you would never tell me something." He took a quick glimpse of her and looked down. He felt like he was making a mistake by asking her, "You don't have to tell me if you don't feel like it."

She stopped whatever she was doing and faced him.

"We are different," she paused to observe his reaction. As expected, Lucas was looking at her shocked and confused but not in a bad way.

"He did tell me that before."

"How much-" She bit her lip as she hesitated to continue, "How much do you know?"

She sounded worried as if the secret that she had been desperately keeping got exposed.

"He told me that you would never choose me."

••••••••••••••••••<>••••••••••••••••••

The clocks sounded to ring the alarm and the hands started to turn fast. It was not like Leila did not want to choose him but it was more of like she did not have any choice from the start. She walked a bit backwards, trying to move away from Lucas. Her back hit something behind and she knew there was no more space left to continue moving. She turned around and saw her own reflection through the glass of the huge clock hanging on the wall.

Her eyes widened when she saw her own reflection and quickly turned away. Her throat went dry and she gave out a dry laughter.

"It's true," she said softly but loud enough for him to hear. Everything Aaron said was true. She saw this coming and yet she thought there was still hope. She forgot the fact that that it was wrong from the start.

"In the end, it's us who will be hurt. I'm sorry for dragging you into this mess."

"What do you mean by that?"

Lucas really wished that she would turn around and face him. He wanted to look at her. He wanted her to look at him straight in the eye and speak to him. He just wanted to make sure she was fine which was clearly not happening.

The next thing that happened was the glasses in the shop shattering into pieces.

Lucas gasped at the sight. He ran towards her and embraced her from behind.

"Calm down."

He closed her eyes by covering it over with his hands. He felt that it had gotten wet and hot due to the tears rolling down her face.

"I'm sorry," She repeatedly said it and started shaking. Lucas noticed it and began to worry about her condition. He had no idea what to do. He had never seen her this way before.

"You don't have to apologize. Everything's ok. It's my fault. I shouldn't have asked-"

He got cut off by her when she removed his hands from her face and turned around to face him.

"You don't get it," she took a deep breath, "I'm a sinner."

Lucas did not understand what she meant. He stared at her blankly as he tried to process the words.

"Does it mean you have killed someone before?"

"Yes."

It was a short but clear answer. She didn't even hesitate when she said it.

He could tell that she was being serious. But why was it that he did not care about the fact that she different or the fact that she was a sinner. Everything sounded wrong yet it felt right at the same time.

But it was different for Leila. She did not have the right to choose. She had to make things right. She became too attached. It was too late for her but she had to stop it before it was too late for him. Even if it meant that she would be left broken.

"Forget me like we've never met before."

He intertwined fingers with her instead and pulled her into a hug.

"Are you kidding me?!"

He just hugged her tightly as if he doesn't wish to let go.

"You don't mean it."

She failed to pull her hand back as Lucas held it tightly.

"Tell me. Were you just playing with my feelings?"

She winced and averted her eyes. He held her chin and turned it slowly to face him.

"Tell me. You hate me."

She stared into his eyes and remained silent. She could not bring herself to say it or rather she was never meant to lie. Her heart squeezed and tears were threatening to fall. She tried her best to hold it in but hot tears rolled down her cheeks uncontrollably.

"Let me go. Just let me!" Leila exclaimed desperately.

He released her hand immediately when tears continuously fell and he did not know what to do.

"Leila, I-"

"Alex!" she called him out and Alex appeared immediately before her.

Within split seconds, Lucas was kicked him in the stomach. He felt like his stomach twisted. He coughed out blood and dropped onto the floor. His vision started to blur out and he used his last energy to look at Leila.

"I'm sorry, Lucas."

And that was the last thing he heard from her before he blacked out totally.
