A/n: didnt expect this, huh? ;)
"When was the last time you saw him?"
"Well..." Jungkook glances over at Taehyung, who is sitting beside him then back to Heejoon who sits across from him. "...he was following us on Halloween."
"Did you get a look at his face? Anything notable about his appearance? Tattoos, piercings, anything that stood out?"
Jungkook shakes his head. "He was wearing a bunch of clothes. I didn't see what he looked like underneath them all."
"What was he wearing?"
"His clothes definitely stood out, but I doubt he wears them on a day to day basis...he wears a fedora and a trench coat. All black."
"Sounds like awful fashion choice..." Minwoo says, who is standing nearby.
Jungkook's eyes fall down onto the notepad that Heejoon is writing on. "Do you think I should be worried?" He asks.
"I do." Heejoon says matter-of-factly and drops the pencil, interlacing his fingers. He looks up from the notepad. "I don't want to scare you, but there has been talk going around of a man fitting this description lately. So far there has been only a few reports, but, I suspect there will be more."
"So...I'm not his only target?" Jungkook asks with a scared look in his eyes.
"I can't say for certain, but I don't think so. Though, there are similarities between you and the other victims of this harassment...he seems to be following teenagers around your age. Like I said, there have only been a few reports thus far, so, it could just be a coincidence."
"I spoke to another police officer about it on Halloween...apparently someone had been going around asking about me. But he didn't seem to know much about what was going on." Jungkook says.
"He most likely wouldn't. Everyone who has approached me has done so personally - people who live around here. They have asked me to investigate privately."
"Isn't that against the law though?? Couldn't that get you in trouble??" Minnie asks, who is sitting on the opposite side of Jungkook. "What if this guy is a serial killer or something?"
"So far none of the victims that have come forward have been injured, and they have asked me to keep it to myself for now. I don't want to betray their trust." Heejoon says.
"Yes, but it's your responsibility dad! What if they get hurt?" Minnie says.
"It's not like I'm letting this go on without doing something about it. I am doing exactly as they have asked, investigating privately." Heejoon says. "I don't want to jump to any conclusions until we have solid evidence this man is a danger to society. I also have a partner who is keeping a close eye on it, so don't worry. If it gets bigger than we can handle, of course I will take it further."
"I feel like this is a really bad idea..." Minnie says, crossing her arms. "I just don't want Jungkook getting hurt."
"Don't worry, my dear. I will not let Jungkook get harmed. He is like a son to me, you know that." Heejoon says, averting his attention back onto Jungkook.
"This is why I came to your dad, Minnie."Jungkook says. "Out of every police officer in this town, I trust him most. And I just really didn't want to make a big deal about it...I really don't want word going around and getting back to my uncle."
"Well...even if I think this is a terrible decision...I guess I will just have to trust you guys know what's best..." Minnie says, and Jungkook gives her a reassuring pat on the back.
"There was one other thing I wanted to tell you." Jungkook says, looking back over at Heejoon. He fiddles with his fingers. "Apparently this man offered someone I know a large sum of money...for information about me in return."
"And who was this?" Heejoon asks with an eyebrow raised.
"Um..." Jungkook opens his mouth and scratches the back of his head. "Just...um...just a doctor. Not my regular doctor."
"Did they accept the money?" Heejoon asks.
"No, no. But she was worried about me and told me." Jungkook says and Heejoon slowly nods his head.
"What the hell could this creep want with a teenage boy?!" Minwoo says. "Jungkook's not rich, or famous!" He looks over at Jungkook. "No offense honey."
"I was beginning to suspect it might have something to do with Taeyong, but...since it's happening to other people, that can't be the case." Jungkook says.
"It seems as though, Jungkook, that you just are a magnet for these kinds of people. But don't worry." Heejoon says, closing the notepad. "You have my cellphone number, and you know I'll be there in a flash if anything is wrong. For now, I'll be keeping an eye in your neighborhood."
Jungkook stands up from the table. "Thanks so much, sir. I thank you for allowing me to come to you." He says and Heejoon smiles.
"No worries. It's my job, and even if it wasn't I would be doing just the same." Heejoon says and Jungkook returns a smile.
"Now, let's stop talking about all this scary stuff and fill our stomachs with delicious food, yeah? It smells like the lasagna is done." Minwoo says, happily making his way to the kitchen.
As the four were making their way to the kitchen, Heejoon places his hand on Jungkook's shoulder and stops him. "Jungkook." He says and Jungkook looks over his shoulder at him. "I want you to have this." He says, fiddling around with his belt.
"What's this?" Jungkook says, glancing down at the item that Heejoon offers out in his hand.
"It's mace. If anyone gets too close, just whip this out and spray 'em directly in the eyes." Heejoon says, and places it in Jungkook's open hand, closing his fingers around it. "Just make sure it's not facing towards you when you spray it."
"Are you sure I can have it?" Jungkook asks.
"Yes. But this is high grade stuff. Police stuff. So don't let anyone know you have it." Heejoon says. "It will blind 'em for a good hour. Can't find this stuff in stores, no siree."
"Thank you so much." Jungkook says, giving a small bow in thanks. As Heejoon walks into the kitchen, he opens his hand and stares down at the mace for a few moments before putting it safely into his pocket and following him into the kitchen.
ONE WEEK LATER
"Hey, sunshine." Junha says, sitting on the couch and shoving handfuls of m&ms into his mouth. A few of them drop onto his shirt, but he doesn't bother picking them up.
Jungkook, who is walking down the stairs looks over at the teen who is only visible in the blue glow from the tv screen. "Why do you like being in the pitch dark?" He says, taking his last step down. He walks over and turns a light on a table nearby.
Junha lets out a grunt and covers his eyes. "It's calming." He says, leaning forward and placing the bowl of m&ms on the table. He wipes his hands on his shirt. "I thought you were going to your boyfriend's house."
"Taehyung isn't my boyfriend." Jungkook mumbles. "And I was going to, but I just don't want to walk around at this time of night."
"Smart." Junha says, pointing at the tv. "You been seein' this shit?" He says, and Jungkook looks over a the tv. On the screen shows blurred pictures of a lifeless male, his throat having been slit with no color left in his body. His stomach instantly drops as he reads the breaking news headlines;
"Body of 17 year old male found floating in shallow waters by local farmer."
"Crazy shit. Another person was found last week - a girl. I think I may have known her too...she was a cute cashier." Junha says, shaking his head back and fourth.
Jungkook swallows his saliva. "Do they think these cases are connected?" He asks, though he's unsure if he wants the answer or not.
"They're not sure. But if you ask me, I think we have a real creep on our hands." Junha says, and their heads turn instantly upon hearing a knock on the door.
The two boys are dead silent as they stare at the door. After a few moments, they both slowly look over at each other, gaging what the other was going to do. It isn't until the second knock that Junha stands up suddenly from the couch.
"What do we do?" Jungkook whispers.
"Keep your distance." Junha whispers back and slowly starts reaching into his pocket. "Keep your phone out and ready to call the cops just in case."
"Be careful." Jungkook says and Junha nods.
"Don't worry about me. I'm sure it's nothing..." He says and slowly starts walking to the door. He stands in front of it for a few moments with his hand hovering over the doorknob. The two hold their breath as his hand grows closer, and Junha starts feeling tiny droplets of sweat forming on his forehead.
As Junha slowly unlocks the door, Jungkook, too, reaches into his pocket. Inside of it, he grips tightly onto the bottle of mace. Meanwhile, Junha finally gathers the courage to open the door, but he does so cautiously and peeks through the crack of it first.
Junha breathes out in relief.
"What are you doing here?" Junha asks, opening the door the rest of the way. Jungkook tries peeking around him, to where he sees Heejoon standing at the doorway in uniform.
"Sorry for stopping by so late, but I need to speak to Jungkook." Heejoon says, and he looks down suspiciously at Junha's hand that was still in his pocket. "I'm also gonna have to ask you to put your hands where I can see them."
"Oh. Right. Sorry about that." Junha quickly removes his hand from his pocket and holds them up, assuring them he is holding onto nothing. "Just a little skittish is all."
"It's fine." Heejoon says, and he looks up at Jungkook, who is now walking towards the door. "Can we step outside for a moment, Jungkook?" He asks.
"Yeah, of course." Jungkook says and he steps around Junha to join heejoon on the front porch. He closes the door behind him.
"I just wanted to let you know that I'm gonna be surveying the area for the next couple days." Heejoon says, glancing around over his shoulder. "I'm sure you have been hearing of the people coming up missing. I don't want to scare you but there is a possibility, though small, that this and the person looking for you is connected. But I would like to assure you that I have made a few other officers aware of this. Officers that I trust."
Jungkook nods his head. "I understand. I feel safer know you're going to be here...I've been scared to even leave the house, honestly..." Jungkook says.
"I do have to warn you though that if this keeps happening, I will have to relay what you have told me to the chief. I'm unsure of why you want to keep this from your uncle, I won't pry too much, but I won't have any other options."
"No, no, I totally get it. I know you have to do what you have to do." Jungkook asks and Heejoon nods.
"But I do have to ask you something, Jungkook. Is everything ok at home? You know you can tell me if anything is on your mind."
"I know, sir. And I would if I ever felt the need to...but I don't, really. Everything is fine here." Jungkook says, and Heejoon nods is head slowly.
"Okay. Well, I'll let you continue on with what you were doing. I just wanted to keep you updated on the investigation." Heejoon says.
"Thank you, sir. I hope you stay safe out there." Jungkook says.
"You too." Heejoon says and he leans in to give Jungkook a hug. Jungkook stands there for a few moments in his embrace and he lifts his arms up, returning it. The two stand there for a few moments and Jungkook lets out a soft sigh, feeling rather empty when he eventually has to let go.
After the two bid each other a farewell, Heejoon steps off the porch and heads back to his police car - Jungkook returning back to the house, where he ensures to lock the door behind him.
"So...you and officer pretty boy like close or somethin'?"
"We've always been close." Jungkook mumbles. "He's like a father to me. More of a father than my own father was."
"Yeah. Your dad seemed pretty fucked up." Junha says and snickers. "Ya know, 'kook...we really aren't that different after all. I mean...we both have daddy issues. And your uncle doesn't like you, or me...I would say we're two peas in a pod." He says and Jungkook starts making his way up the stairs. "Wait."
"What?" Jungkook asks tiredly, stopping on the fist step.
"Since the house is gonna be empty this weekend, I decided I'd throw a little party together. Is that cool with you?" Junha asks and Jungkook turns back around to face him.
"Are you serious? Every single party you have ever thrown in your life has been a complete and utter disaster...and I'm the one who takes the blame for it."
"Come on, 'Kook. I promise I'll clean up after myself."
"No. I'm not going through this again." Jungkook says. "I don't want all that crap around Kyu."
"You're no fun, Jungkook. Just live a little for once!" Junha says. "Just be like me - carefree!"
"That's the thing, Junha, you just don't care and that's what makes me worried about you."
"Whatever, 'Kook. At least I won't die from stress when I'm 50. I'm going down doing what I love." Junha says, shoveling the last few m&ma in his mouth.
IN ANOTHER PART OF TOWN
A man sits quietly on a sofa in his living room, wrapped up tightly in a blanket. He reaches for a tv remote that sits on the coffee table in front of him, and he turns it on. In one hand he holds a mug, in the other, he flips through television channels; stopping when he reaches the perfect one.
"You fool! You shall soon know...that The World's true power is, indeed, the power to reign over this world!MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDA!"
"Oh Dio. What a wonder you are." The man says to himself, shaking his head back and fourth.
"Your clothes are cleaned and pressed, sir."
The man doesn't take his eyes off of the screen as he waves the boy off, who is standing there holding clothes that are nicely folded in his arms - on the top of them lays a black fedora. "Just go set them in my room." He says, taking a sip of the contents of his mug and the boy gives a small bow, then turns around.
"And thank you for your help, Sin." The man says, licking his lips that were stained red. "You've been such a treasure."
