Chapter Thirty Two

Word Count: 1592

¬Millicent

It's not much power, but it's enough.

Sinful moves almost instantly, not giving me much time to wrap my head around what just happened. He grabs me, lowering me back to the ground. The moment he does so, everything seems to resume back to normal, like he pressed some kind of button, restarting the world around us. The birds, the wind. It all goes back to the way it was.

"What just happened?" I breathe, the moment my feet touch the ground. I can't help but shake, and not out of fear for the fact that I just fell from the tree, purposefully or not, but the fact that Sinful caught me, and not with the strength of his body, but with magic.

He doesn't respond right away, his face void of all healthy colour. He looks shocked that he reacted in that way, with magic I haven't seen him use yet.

But I knew he would save me, in whatever way that would be.

"You fell. I don't know, I just reacted," he breathes. I can feel the shock, as he takes a few steps away from me, like he expects me to be afraid of him. For a moment, I consider the fact that he didn't know what he is actually capable, by his reaction. But that can't be possible. I never thought twice about the magic he possesses, always assuming it was nothing more than an ability to seduce.

Yet I've never witnessed that power firsthand. At least I don't think I have, although there have been moments in the past where I've had overwhelming feelings for them, but shamefully, I attribute them to the matebond, and nothing more.

"What did you do? Stop time or something?" I question, trying to sound humorous, but instead my voice comes out breathy, unable to force a lie into my tone.

Sinful stares vacantly at the ground.

"I don't know. This was a mistake, we should head back," he says suddenly, a cold veil coming upon him as his expression settles to an impassive one, and his body becomes tense. Before I can argue, he grabs my arm, and the world begins to change around us, the nice day I thought we would have, despite my sabotage disappearing around me.

The moment we land back in his manor, my feet touching the marble floor beneath me, Sinful has let me go, and is walking away. I'm not going to let him walk away from this and pretend like it didn't happen ...not when I threw myself off a tree out of trust that he would save me.

"Sinful, what aren't you telling me?" I question, my words bringing him to a stop. He turns, a wild look in his eyes making my heart jump into my throat.

Is he really as shocked about this as I am?

"What do you want me to say? That I stopped time? Of course I didn't, there is only one person who can manipulate time, and that's the man himself. I don't just have that power," he tells me. Maybe he could be lying, but as I look into those lavender eyes, full of desperation, I don't know what to think. It seems like he genuinely doesn't know what happened back there.

"We should talk about this...you've never been honest with me about your powers, or told or shown me anything. This is why we have known we are mates for so long, yet never been together," I tell him, my voice raising more than intended.

I'm not mad about what is coming out of my mouth, I'm simply frustrated with everything is going on. I'm scared Kyser is going to do something to Sinful I can't even tell him about.

Now I'm being the dishonest one.

With that vacant look still in his eyes, Sinful steps forward, reaching out to grab a hold of my face. It's not aggressive, but gentle, soothing almost. Being this close to look into his eye, to feel the briefest touch of his breath against my skin. It's all I can do not to shiver, not to let my gaze flicker down to where it wants to.

"What do you want, Millicent? For me to seduce you? For me to corrupt you? Because that's all I'm actually worth. I'm a Sin, and I know that doesn't sit right with you, and you would rather tear our mate-bond apart so you can be with a pure man... I can't be that. Stop trying to look for something within me, because there's nothing there," he snaps.

Even through saying that, his voice is gentle, broken. For a moment I'm utterly speechless, not knowing what words I could say to remedy this situation.

He couldn't be more wrong.

He lets go of my face, but I grab onto his wrist, not letting him walk away from this one. "Sinful, you're wrong. Does your past unnerve me, yes. But I'm not looking to change you, or to hope you have other abilities. Trust me, I want nothing more than for you to be who you tell me you are, for you to be who you act like when you're with me."

It couldn't be more true. As much as I would like to believe that the kindness Sinful has extended me recently is apart of his behaviour, of his personality, I know better. He is a Sin, one who has lived a long time, and has made more mistakes than I could ever imagine.

That I know for certain.

"You can't say these things which such certainty, when I don't know anything about you either. You've always been my mate, locked away from me. Now I finally have you here, where I want you and yet...who even are you?" he questions, his fear now gone, having been replaced by a curious vulnerability.

I let go of his forearm, hoping maybe he would walk away again, but this time, he stays, refusing to let me out of this conversation.

"What do you want me to say? You know my powers come from the people who pray for me...from how much the Moon wants from me. Here, now, I'm powerless," I explain, hoping he sees what I'm trying to say to him. What happened with my healing powers was a fluke...I haven't

Me being powerless, and you not, scares me.

"Come on Millicent, what do you want from the guy? If you're that desperate to have sex with him, you just need to ask, rather than avoid it and hope he will use his powers on you," I hear, and not from Sinful's mouth. "We all know that's all he's good for. At least we know that's what you want from him."

Whirling around, I see Kyser walking toward us, the faintest hint of a smile gracing his features. The way he looks over us is laden with a single message. A warning. One that Sinful will see right through, but chills my blood to the point I shudder.

"Very funny," Sinful mutters, assuming Kyser is making fun of him and nothing more. Little does he know, Kyser has caught me doing something that might get me in trouble.

And now I'm the only powerless person here. But I won't let that allow him to control me.

Despite the flush that reaches my cheeks, as I comb through what Kyser says, I refuse to overreact. He's poking fun at me, knowing what he walked in on me doing what feels like a long time ago now. Still, just thinking it over makes me embarrassed, but thankfully Sinful doesn't know what happened, even if Kyser brings it up without him realising it more often than not.

"Sinful and I are having a personal conversation," I growl pointedly toward Kyser. He holds his hands up defensively, before turning around to walk away, but not before ensuring I see the lasting look he gives me, still warning me.

Don't tell Sinful anything.

"You've seemed cold to Kyser recently. Something happen between you two?" Sinful questions, once Kyser had walked out of the room.

"I'm not sure. I know Kyser says we need his help, to get rid of this bond between me and the Moon, but I think we could do it without him," I tell him lowly, hoping Kyser isn't close enough to hear us. "I don't trust him. Why don't we tell him to leave, and we will do this on our own. I haven't even had any sign that the Moon knows anything. Maybe we are fine."

Sinful raises his eyebrows, clearly not buying a word of what I'm saying. "We need Kyser. If we upset him, even in the slightest, then he could break the magic, and you could get killed."

I want to tell him everything. From Kyser's plan with Sinful, to who the guy is in the first place. Yet I can't, at least not without risking anything.

So I'm going to have to figure out how to get Kyser away on my own. And I have the perfect solution.
