Heartbreak and Redemption
Heartbreak and Redemption
Running her fingers across his smooth, bronze skin she felt her throat close with emotion. Fearful to meet his gaze and see his dark, impassive eyes Harper kept her stare firmly on his full, parted lips instead. Swallowing hard she let her fingers skitter down to where her eyes were trained and gently traced the lips that tempted her to forget that he had once -twice nearly killed her. She hated him, she despised ever inch of him yet here she was yearning to wrap her arms around him. He churned this storm within her. Brought about these emotions of hate and adoration.
"I hate you so much." She whispered as she stepped forward.
Her heart leaped in mid beat as his hand cupped her cheek. His fingers caressed her cheekbone with such tenderness that for a short moment Harper tricked herself into believing that he did care for her. Leaning into his inviting touch she felt the impending heartache sear through her chest. That's what would always come with any encounter with Kiev.
"Do you really?"
Her breath caught in her throat at the sound of his voice, the inkling of hurt in his tone reeled her bruised heart in. His tone almost convincing her that he felt guilty, dare we even think it but even regret. This seemed too perfect to be true. It had to be a dream. Kiev wouldn't care. The truth was bitter to swallow but she wasn't delusional enough to think he would after strangling her yet again. She wouldn't fool herself into that position to get hurt again. Enjoy the dream, a voice sneered.
Standing on the tips of her toes she lowered her hand back to her side. With her gaze trained on his lips she closed the small distance between them and with a feather like touch she grazed her lips over his. She didn't miss the way his body trembled as she pulled away to stare at his slightly parted lips. "I hate you with every fiber of my being." She whispered as a sad smile tilted her lips upwards. With the small confession ringing in the darkness between them she crashed her lips over his slacked mouth, her arms winding around his neck as she pressed herself further against him.
For a moment he remained stiff and unmoving as she coaxed his still lips with hungry kisses. Harper grazed her teeth over his bottom lip and held the plump lip between them for a moment before she bit down hard. Kiev hissed but didn't attempt to pull away nor stop her as she bit down harder on his flesh in the hopes of inflicting the same pain he had no problem inflicting on her. When the seconds ticked by Harper realized he wasn't going to stop her and the realization filled her with both anger and disappointment. A warm trickle of blood coated her tongue, the metallic taste causing her to pull away. Angry tears stung her eyes as she tilted her head and glared at Kiev. The sorrow filling his gaze felt like a doubled edge sword against her heart only fueling her anger.
She loathed this man yet she couldn't harm him despite the countless times he has harmed her. Swearing under her breath she felt his soft ebony hair tickle her fingers, beckoning for her touch and she couldn't resist. Twirling the soft, short strands between her trembling fingers she sighed and took in his bloodied lip, pleading gaze and his disheveled hair. Dressed in a crisp sky blue button down shirt and black slacks Kiev looked ever much the sinful demon who could pull any female into his web of deception. Luring his victim towards the path of inevitable heartache.
Swallowing hard she tilted his head downwards. "Why did you do this to me?"
Asking the Kiev of her dreams the question was pure foolishness but she had to ask the question that has been gnawing at her. She'd never ask the real Kiev because she didn't know if she could handle the truth and she would never give the bastard the opportunity to see her vulnerable again. Her faith in him had disappeared like the stars in daylight the moment he told her to close her eyes to make killing her easier for him.
"Why did you come into my life to pull me into this spiral?" She added in a broken whisper.
"I should have never pulled you into this mess."
His answer caused her heart to leap as a flicker of hope lit deep within her only to be extinguished no sooner as she noticed the semi fading room and was reminded this was a dream. This Kiev would say anything she wanted, he would be perfect and caring unlike the real Kiev. Well aware that she shouldn't in deluge in such frivolous nonsense but Harper couldn't help but take advantage of her dream state and the perfect Kiev in her head.
Leaning her forehead against his chest Harper released a shuddered breath. "I wish this is how he really is." She mumbled sadly and her fingers tightened on his soft hair. "Or better yet I wish I never met him."
A pair of strong arms wrapped around her shoulders and pulled her against his large frame. "I wish you never met me too." The dream Kiev whispered and placed a gentle kiss on top of her head.
Squeezing her eyes shut against the throbbing in her chest Harper wished this was real. With every inch of her heart and soul she wished this was the actual man that broke her heart days ago. She wished the real Kiev had stayed until she awoke and apologized. Or at least stick around to make sure she was okay. She would have kicked him out but a large part of her wanted him to have been there, to just stand there and prove she wasn't a fool to have allowed him to slip past her defenses. It would have been easier to excuse his actions if he had been there. But then again maybe it was for the best he hadn't stayed. Waking to only Elena tending to her injuries had been like a slap of the cold reality she hadn't been willing to accept. She was foolish to have ever thought their relationship would have actually gone anywhere.
Biting her lip against his chest she wondered why she could still feel the ache in her chest as it continued to tear her heart in half even in her dream. Was there no escaping the misery even while she slept. Her only hope would be time, time would heal her wounds. Kiev stroked her hair adding to the heaviness in her chest. A lot of time, she thought as she pressed herself closer to his warm body.
These dreams are what helped push her through the last few days as she lay in her bed watching Elena tend to her like a sick child. Knowing she could see Kiev, confront him, hurt him, touch him gave her the motivation she needed to push through the misery. She knew it was sad and would never admit it to anyone but moments like this one were helping her cope with what had occurred. Was it a healthy way to deal with nearly dying? No, of corse not but she didn't know how else to deal with the conflicting emotions within her. Who could she speak with about her complicated emotions , her brother, her sister? Elena wasn't an option either. The witch had grew silent when Harper even mentioned Kiev making it crystal clear that she didn't want to discuss anything that had to do with the asshole.
A warmth spread across her entire form and Harper recognized the wave of warmth and knew she was waking up. Lifting her head off his chest she stared into the sad green eyes before her and sighed at the thought of returning to reality. Gliding a single hand across his neck, over his taunt jaw she stroked his smooth cheek. She didn't miss the way he leaned into her touch as his eyes slowly fluttered shut and a breathless sigh fell from his lips. Ignoring the way her heart twisted in anguish at the saddened expression on his face Harper hardened her defenses knowing she had to remain strong in reality if she were to survive this. But she wasn't in reality quite yet.
Standing on the balls of her toes she pressed her lips to his cheek, allowing her lips to linger on his soft skin before ever so slowly pulling away. "I'll see you later Kiev." She whispered sadly, wishing she truly wouldn't. These dreams filled her with hope that could never be and made healing that much harder. Seeing the real Kiev wouldn't help either, not with all this pent up anger.
"Until tomorrow night." He smiled, the sparkle in his green eyes evident to his inner disappointment. With that he took a step back and the warmth spread along her fingers that had moments ago been tangled in his soft hair. The darkness faded despite her effort to fight the clarity that passed through her and lifted the fog of sleep from her mind. Kiev's sad expression was the last image she saw before the sun bathed her bare skin in its warmth as she blinked her eyes open.
Sliding into a sitting position Harper ran a shaky hand over the sheen of sweat that covered her forehead. She didn't know what to make of the emotions after these dreams. Anger, relief, disappointment, confusion and a twinge of guilt. She loathed her reaction to his presence in her dreams because she wasn't sure if he was a figment of her imagination or if the real Kiev was playing more mind games with her. The second possibly sent her heart skipping happily and that worried her. There was no way Kiev would waste his time trying to make her feel better without having an alternate motive but her reaction to the very slim chance scared her. She had invested too much of her heart into Kiev and based on her interactions with the man she had set herself up for this.
Huffing out in frustration she tossed the covers aside and jumped to her feet in her birthday suit. Ignoring the stinging of her eyes Harper grabbed her bathrobe off the chair by the dresser and tied it firmly around her waist mind full of the sticky bubblegum colored cream smeared across her chest. After days of reapplying the gunk on her injuries and force feeding her a foul tasting green souplike drink Elena had given her permission to walk around freely in her apartment but not outside of it. The only injuries remaining was a curled up rose like scar between her breasts where according to Elena was where the bands emerged from and that pesky throbbing in her chest slightly left of the scar. Elena said it might be an after effect of the bands being activated so intensely in such a short span of time.
Despite the stiffness in her legs Harper did feel fit enough to leave her apartment and she desperately needed the fresh air and a distraction from everything. Grabbing her phone from off the table she glanced down at the screen. Sighing she slid down the texts and list of activities from Olivia's phone knowing she had more reason now than ever to uncover whatever secret Olivia was hiding. Although Kiev claimed there was no mole but she wasn't sure she should believe him. Not only did she not believe anything he said anymore but she had a gut feeling that Kiev was somehow involved with Olivia's recent strange behavior.
Just how much involved are they? Shaking her head in the hopes of clearing her mind of the question Harper couldn't deny she did feel a pang of jealousy thinking about her sister and Kiev and what they were doing behind her back.
Flipping the phone over in her hand Harper pulled the bedroom door open and was assaulted by the aroma of a sweet fruity scent that had her stomach grumbling loudly. Sniffing the air Harper started toward the small kitchen where Elena stood with a tray of muffins as she kicked the door shut.
"Hey, good morning." Elena beamed happily as she set the pan down on the stove.
"Morning." Harper mumbled back as she strode over to the stove. Reaching out to grab a muffin she brushed her fingers against the edge of the pan. With a hiss of pain she pulled her hand back and sucked on her burnt finger.
Elena laughed and reached out to pull a muffin out of place, unaffected by the hot pan. "Here, let it cool before trying to eat it." She explained before placing it down on the counter.
Nodding Harper turned towards the coffee maker and smiled upon seeing the filled pot, she needed caffeine. Pouring a cup she proceeded to put her regular six spoons of sugar.
"How are you feeling today?"
Harper opted for no cream and lifted the large cup in her hands. "Better."
"How about the chest pain?"
"It's not too bad." She lied and took a sip of coffee.
Pursing her lips Elena tossed the oven mitts down on the counter. Crossing her arms across her chest she looked Harper over from head to toe. "And how are you up here?" Elena gestured to her head.
Lowering her mug back down to the counter Harper grabbed the muffin Elena left to cool and waved it as she answered. "Considering how I was strangled almost to death by a demon and his freaky burning band things I'm doing just peachy." She stated dryly before biting off a mouthful of the warm muffin.
Just as the fluffy morsel touched her tongue Harper felt her stomach lurch in protest to the bland taste. Twisting on her heels Harper dashed towards the trash can and spit out the chewed up chunk in her mouth. Lifting her head from the trash she sent Elena a quizzical look.
"What is in there?"
Striding over with her head held high Elena snatched the bitten muffin from Harper's hand. "Soy flour, honey, lavender, a bit of rosemary oil and a dash of my own personal favorite spices."
Glaring at the offensive muffin Harper shuddered in disgust. "It tastes like sawdust."
"You just don't appreciate the natural flavors." Elena retorted and proceeded to take a bite causing Harper to gag recalling the horrid taste in her mouth.
Circling the witch Harper returned to her coffee in hopes of ridding her mouth of the bland, dry muffin. Harper was extremely grateful to Elena for taking care of her theses past five days. Harper didn't know how the witch had found out about her condition but was glad she had been here, had she not have been tending to her Harper would have woken up alone and in pain. She couldn't picture arriving at the emergency room in her injured state and trying to explain how she had gotten this way but despite her gratitude towards Elena Harper could have lived without her horrible food. Every meal consisted of soy this, organic that and Harper could never erase the taste of tofu from her memory. A shudder had her body trembling in mild disgust at the reminder.
Apart of leaving the Hunters and her father's control meant she no longer had to endure these tasteless meals.
"Are you okay? You're pale."
Waving off Elena's concern Harper took another sip of her coffee regretting her decision to skip the creamer. She needed her French vanilla asap. "I'm fine, just trying to recover from that." She teased pointing towards the remainder muffin in the petite woman's hand.
Pursing her lips in response Elena bent down to the cupboard and pulled out a box of cereal. "Let me guess what you would rather have?" She asked with a shake of the box.
A toothy grin spread along Harper's face as she poured creamer into her mug. "You know me too well."
With a roll of her eyes Elena walked across the small kitchen in search for a bowl when Harper's cell vibrated against the counter where she had placed it earlier. Flipping it over Harper frowned at the message on her screen. Olivia was on the move and by the looks of it she was heading out of Hunter territory. With her eyes glued to the screen she watched as Olivia made her way down Main Street towards the highway.
"So what's the plan for today?"
Elena's voice caused her head to snap upwards as her brows pulled together in momentary confusion before her words set in. Harper had planned on taking a walk in the park earlier but she was now considering a walk after Olivia.
"I wanted to go out today." Harper shrugged in hopes of not revealing her plan to follow her sister. Elena made her feelings about spying on Olivia very clear.
"I'll come with you."
A sharp no was on the tip of her tongue fighting to escape but Harper knew the witch would only press further on the matter if she protested. So Harper did what she use to do to Liam when she didn't want him tagging along with her when they were thirteen. "Alright but I'll be taking my camera. I'd like to get a couple nature shots for my personal album."
"That's sounds cool let me grab my coat."
Crap! That wasn't what she expected at all. Racking her brain for another excuse that would sell her out Harper hadn't noticed Elena's smug expression until the small woman cleared her throat. Placing her hands on her slender hips Elena arched a brow accusingly. "Would you like to tell me what you're really doing today?"
"How did you.."
"Your aura was spiky, a clear trait of a liar." She answered with a tilt of her chin.
Huffing out loud Harper cursed under her breath. She had forgotten about that aura nonsense. To be honest she had forgotten most if not all her training and studying of other supernatural beings. She had left all that unnecessary knowledge back with her old life, then she had thought she'd never need that information boy was she wrong.
Glancing down at the screen Harper felt like a lost child watching as everyone around her ran around with their own agenda that seemed to involve her in some way or another. She hated being this useless and vulnerable but it was the truth. She had no idea what was happening yet she had some how found herself dap smack in the middle of a blood war that stretches beyond even her grandparents generation. Despite her leaving the supernatural world she has found herself in the clutches of a sëx demon who is one confusing asshole because her half sister -who seems shader by the day- got herself in a bind. To make matters worse Harper only recently discovered her mother plotted the murder of a demon queen and used her own daughter to have the demon king killed and keep the hunters out of trouble. This was not the future Harper had images for herself when she left years ago.
Her shoulders slumped in defeat. She was manipulated into the position she was in by everyone it seemed but that didn't mean she had to remain in it. Oh no she was done being the victim to this war.
"I'm going to follow Olivia and find out what she's hiding." She blurted with her eyes firmly trained on Elena.
The witch's eyes widened before darting down to the phone clutched tightly in Harper's hand. "You're still spying on her." She stated rather than asked.
Nodding Harper knew she had to discover on her own what exactly was going if she had any hope of coming out of all of this alive. That meant she had to take a stand and jump into this with her eyes wide open and trust no one. Not Kiev, not Olivia, her father or Elena. Not even her own twin. Everyone was a suspect, so no one could be trusted.
"I don't think-"
"I don't care what you think or what the Hunters council thinks. I'm in this situation because it benefited other peoples' agenda. I was used to exact revenge once but I won't be used again." Harper snapped harshly.
Elena's eyes softened. "You're right. You shouldn't have been in the middle of all of this then and you shouldn't be now either."
Looking down at her hands wrapped around the round purple mug Harper wanted to apologize for recent behavior. Elena had been nothing but nice to her since she awoke days ago. She was the one who cancelled and rescheduled all her appointments for the week, Elena has been the one cooking her homemade meals despite the fact that she worked at her store as well. Sure the food was awful but Elena wouldn't complain when Harper didn't eat it, instead she'd make her something else. For days now Elena has been reapplying the gunk on her injuries and never once scolded her when she wiped it off that first day. No one else would have been taking care of her right or back when she was a child after her mother died.
Elena had been the one to console her, sure she never told her the truth about what had happened but she had sat with her. Wiped her tears, told her over and over again that she would rise above this. Harper should be more grateful but she just couldn't ignore how Elena would close up by the mere mention of Kiev or the Hunters. The witch knew something that was for sure.
"I get why you're acting like this, hell I'd probably be worst than snapping a few times." Elena scoffed. "And that's why I want to help you Harper."
"How?" Harper questioned. "You are obviously loyal to one of them." She exclaimed, not sure who's side Elena was on. Her father's or Kiev's.
Elena shook her head vigorously, her short hair slapping against her cheeks. Her eyes hardened, her features sobering as she placed a closed fist to her heart. "They might have my witch's oath but you Harper have my loyalty."
Averting her gaze Harper fought the urge to assure Elena that she trusted her because it was a bald faced lie. She wanted to believe her but it wasn't that simple. A part of her wouldn't allow her to fully accept Elena's promises of loyalty or apologizes. They were just a few words now standing against years of actions that spoke louder.
"Why didn't you tell me about my mother? I understand why you didn't right away but why not later on?" Harper asked as she stared at her shaking fingers gripping the coffee mug.
She didn't have the courage to look Elena in the eye after all she's done and ask her why she hadn't been honest with her. Why would she though? Harper didn't even complete the last six months of Hunter training after she reached her eighteenth birthday and left that world behind. Why would Elena have sought her out and explained how her mother plotted to end an infamous dynasty? Understanding Elena's point of view didn't make her feel any better about being a pawn in her mother's plan.
Swallowing hard Harper still couldn't believe her mother -the woman who slept beside her when she was sick, the woman who would never let a day go by without smothering her with kisses would be so cruel and conniving. How could you momma? How could you use me that way?
"The oath I made to your parents prevented me from ever discussing it with anyone. " Elena sighed sounding just as defeated as Harper felt. "Your mother was a good person she was also complicated. She allowed her loyalty to the Hunters and your father to blind her sense of judgment."
"She used me." Harper barked harshly. Her anger towards her deceased mother oozing to the surface as she lifted her heated gaze up to Elena's. "Nothing can excuse how she orchestrated everything so I'd be a part of that horrible day. She was willing to sacrifice her own daughter for the Hunters."
Tears pricked her vision but Harper refused to shed anymore tears over people who didn't care about her. The Demon King could have killed her that night, that small fact never escaped her thoughts but to know her mother had deliberately placed her in that situation made it worse. Her mother had even told her over and over agin not to kill him. What if the King had killed her? A cold shiver skittered down her spine as she recalled those piercing eyes almost begging her to kill him, those soulless black eyes burning into her. The desperation in his eyes as he squeezed her with those dark tentacles of his screaming for her to ended the pain.
Just like Kiev.
The resemblance hadn't gone unnoticed. Kiev had that same desperation in his eyes as he told her to close his eyes. The same soulless eyes that burned her with the darkness within them. He was his father's son but that didn't mean she had to be her mother's daughter or the same scared girl from back then.
"I'm not going to be used like that again. I'm going to find a way out of this deal and out of this war." Harper murmured to herself, refusing to accept the fact that she was made a victim.
Sniffing back tears Harper breathed in a shuddered breath. She knew the only person who could help her was herself and the first step to her freedom from this war was discovering what secrets her sister had. Glancing down at the blinking blue dot Harper frowned as she looked over the area recognizing it but unsure why. Sliding ahead of Olivia's path Harper's eyes doubled in size as she found herself staring at the club Kiev had brought her to a few weeks ago. Sinful.
Returning back to where Olivia was slowly descending towards the infamous club for both supernaturals and humans alike. Why would Olivia be heading to a demon owned club in broad daylight? Returning to the messages Olivia received in the last few hours Harper found no clue as of to what her sister could be up to. Even the block caller who usually sent her texts hadn't sent her a message in hours. So what could her sister be up to?
Taking a large gulp of her coffee Harper sauntered into the living room and grabbed her camera off the table. If she was going to be spying on Olivia she might as well be collecting evidence to study later on. Maybe it would prove useful and give her a better idea of what Olivia was doing.
"Are you really going nature watching?" Elena scoffed.
Shaking her head Harper returned to her cup of coffee and took another long swing as if it were tequila. She needed the boost in energy. Sure she felt better but that didn't mean she was fully recovered. Still this was an opportunity she couldn't pass up.
"I'm going to find out what my sister is doing hanging around Sinful."
"Sinful? The feeding club?" Elena asked.
Nodding Harper placed the camera down on the kitchen counter and dashed into her bedroom. Yanking her drawers open she put on a pair of cotton panties and a sports bra before pulling on a pair of jeans and a sweater. Gathering her hair into a messy ponytail Harper managed to snag a pair of socks before racing back out into the small living room.
"I don't think you should go there."
Sighing Harper shook her head as she turned to Elena with an annoyed expression on her face. "I'm not doing this with you for a second time. I'm going to that club and that's final."
Elena bit her pink colored bottom lip. "You can't. Kiev might be there."
Pausing in mid stride Harper felt her heart trip over itself in both anticipation and dread at the mere mention of the incubus. "Why would he be there?"
As soon as the words fell from her lips Harper wished she could take them back. She didn't want to know why Kiev would be at a club where Olivia was heading in the middle of the day. Jealousy reared its ugly head as she thought of the possibility of her sister being involved with Kiev romantically. Images of the pair in each other's arms invaded Harper's mind, those full lips that kissed hers countless times before would be all over Olivia's pale skin. Those strong arms would wrap tightly around her sister's slender figure as he brought her flush against his toned body. Bile rose in her throat at the revolting thought.
"Kiev owns the club, when he's not tending to his royal duties he is at one of his clubs."
A relieved sigh passed her lips before she knew it and for that she felt ashamed. Kiev couldn't be trusted. Scolding her pitter pattering heart Harper steeled her shoulders and downed the rest of her coffee, wincing when the hot liquid burned the inside of her cheeks.
"Well let's hope I don't run into him."
That was an understatement. The worst case scenario would be if she ended up face to face with the murderous asshole. Harper couldn't rely on her wayward emotions to remain under restraint when she finally faced Kiev and she sure as hell couldn't predict her reaction. It could be a soppy happiness, disappointment, relief, sadness or murderous rage. Truth was she wasn't sure which emotion would be the dominant emotion when she set eyes on Kiev which was why she had to avoid him, for now at least. Today was about discovering Olivia's secrets not fighting with Kiev.
Throwing her hands up in the air Elena huffed out in frustration. "Fine but I want you to be careful. That place is filled with every kind of supernatural creature that all have one common enemy, Hunters."
"I'll be fine." Harper replied, brushing Elena's warning aside.
Harper recalled the last time she was at the club and had seen first hand what kinds of people lurked around. Sure Elena had no clue that Kiev had taken her to that very club a few weeks ago and she didn't need to know either. Making her way back into the living room Harper dropped down to her knees, wincing when the pain in her chest became more prominent. Biting her lip to keep from any sound escaping Harper stuck her hand beneath the sofa in search for the bottle Kiev gave her. Her fingers brushed the nozzle and she nearly cried with relief when she had the bottle in her hand and was able to stand upright again.
"I just need to conceal my scent." Harper informed her as she proceeded to douse herself in the lavender spray.
"I guess." Elena grumbled as she crossed her arms over her chest. "But how do you plan on blending in when the club isn't even open yet? Someone will know you snuck in."
"I'll pretend I'm lost or say I'm one of the entertainers."
Satisfied with her work Harper placed the bottle down just as a sharp jolt of pain shot through her chest. Grimacing against the pain Harper reached for anything to stabilize her trembling legs. Elena rushed to her side as a spiky sensation stared directly above her heart. A heaviness fell over her almost as if it were weighing her down in place, making breathing difficult.
"You can't go anywhere like this."
Shaking her head Harper shrugged Elena's hands away. Squeezing her eyes she took a few deep breaths to calm her erratic heart beat. I have to do this, I have to. Even as she chided the words to herself Harper felt a need to do as Elena instructed and remain in her apartment. The huntress within her resurfaced in all her defiant glory, refusing to be held back by anything. With her huntress spirit pumping in her veins Harper pushed against the heaviness in her bones and managed to stand on wobbly legs.
The pain slowly lessened and after a few sets of deep breaths Harper was able to stand straight. These random attacks didn't happen often, once or twice a day but they sure hurt like a bïtch!
"I'm fine and I'm going."
Sighing in defeat Elena took a step back and gave a curt nod. "I'll be at my shop so just, just be careful out there."
Throwing on her coat Harper stopped to look back at Elena as she stood in the middle of her living room with a look of concern. The genuine worry filling her youthful face filled Harper with an overwhelming guilt.
"Thank you." Harper whispered unsure if she meant to thank her about tending to her injuries or just being here whether Harper wanted her to or not.
The wrinkles on her forehead smoothed out as the corners of her lips twitched upwards into a sad smile. "I told you my loyalty is with you."
Swallowing hard Harper wondered just who Elena had given an oath to and if they meant her harm or merely using her as a ways to a end. She would have asked but was too afraid to hear the answer just yet. Nodding Harper plucked her camera off the counter, stuffed her feet into a pair of sneakers and made her way out the door.
