Evan Hansen had learnt how to fade into the walls at school. He trained himself to not be seen. He didn't want to be seen, or at least that's what he told himself. Then if he wasn't seen, nobody could harm him like his thoughts said they would.

His mum would call him shy. Say that he just needed to gain confidence and that when he did, he'd be back to being the joyful, giggling little toddler that he was in reception.

His therapist would call him ill. Say that with time and medication he would get better and live a life like everyone else does.

His classmates would call him a freak. They would say that he didn't belong in the school and that he should just give up trying to fit in.

Evan would call himself strange. Evan would call himself worthless. Evan would call himself a wimp. Evan would call himself unwanted. Evan would call himself unloved.

Evan would call himself suicidal.
