9; No Tears.
Jumuat Mubarak!
JANNAH TUCKED one of her hands in her white coat, while the other held a bottle of orange juice. Her gaze flickered to the bottle, making her face scrunch up slightly. Personally, she hated anything orange juice related. She has nothing against oranges-she likes them from time to time. However, orange in juice form is a big NO to her. Be it normal orange juice-like the one she has with her at the moment, or the likes of Fanta, Mirinda, and anything similar. It has never been, and will never be her thing.
However, as she made her way over to the Gynecology department, she is reminded of the reason why she has with her at the moment. She thought of dropping by Nabila, and giving her a little something to help considering the girl is as obsessed with it as Jannah is with Pepsi.
She has just seen a patient that was brought to the OR, and was on her way back to her office when she got a drink for herself and thought of getting one for Nabila too. She could've gotten one for Aisha, but she knew the girl is currently seeing the new VIP patient with the Professors to introduce themselves.
Since Jannah isn't exactly part of the residents assigned to the VIPs, she didn't have to be there just like the others. She liked the fact that she isn't working there, for she couldn't handle dealing with 'important people'. It's a big no thank you for her when it comes to that.
She stopped by the familiar door of Nabila's office, as a grin made its way on her face. Considering the two are friends, she didn't bother to knock or anything and simply went ahead to hold the door handle, and then push it open with a grin.
"Bish guess what I--" Her eyes drifted from Nabila who sat behind the desk, to the couple sitting opposite her whom all turned around to stare at the intruder.
Jannah's lips curled into a small smile as she winced slightly, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt" She apologized, closing the door behind her as she made her way towards Nabila.
"Oh no worries" The woman waved it off, a warm smile dancing on her lips.
Jannah's eyes moved from the woman, to Nabila who was staring at her with eyes slightly widened. She then brought her hand up with the drink, showing it to Nabila. "I got you orange juice, because I know you like it" She made her way towards the table, her smile never wavering. "But--" She extended the juice to the very pregnant woman-probably around seven months or eight. "-I suppose you'll need it more"
The woman's smile only widened as she shook her head. "No, thank you. I really shouldn't. You two are busy all the time, she will need it more"
"Nonsense" Jannah waved it off, shaking her head as she held the woman's hands gently and placed it there. "Worry not about us. We can handle ourselves. Besides, I'm sure Nabila knows her way to get a new one, right?" Her gaze drifted to the woman who looked like a deer caught in the headlights-an expression someone else is holding up.
Nabila swallowed thickly, pushing her chair closer to the table. "Jannah--"
"I am not a gynecologist, but I'm sure orange juice will do no harm to your baby" Jannah cut her off, her eyes now never wavering from the woman sitting in front of her.
The woman then threw a glance at Nabila, then her husband before her fingers curled around the bottle. "Well, thank you then" She let out a small chuckle, her eyes meeting Jannah's. "My husband has been pestering me to get something to drink, I guess you just did the job for me"
Jannah nodded, her grin never fading. "Yeah, I guess I just did" She then pulled back, standing straighter as she reached her hand to pat the woman's shoulder lightly, "I have to get going now. I wish you a safe delivery"
"Thank you"
With a curt nod, Jannah then turned around and left the office. However, just before she closes the door behind her, she heard the woman saying to Nabila "I thought you were beautiful, your friend is stunning ma shaa Allah"
Jannah then allowed the door to close on its own, her smile falling almost instantly as she continued her steps, taking the path that will take her away from the OBGYN department, to CS. However, before she could go far, she heard footsteps behind her and even without turning, she had an inkling who it could be.
"Jay, wait up. Please!"
She stopped in her steps almost instantly, biting the inside of her cheeks as she flickered her eyes close to take in a deep breath. She counted to three in her head, before she flickered her eyes open and turned around to face the man she had been in a relationship with for the past five years of her life.
He heaved slightly, blinking rapidly as she swallowed thickly. Her eyes were widened, and instead of the warmth Jannah feels whenever she sees his orbs, she found herself feeling nothing but burning fury inside. She used to love his eyes the most about him, now though, it was the complete opposite. "Jannah, let me explain..."
"Okay" She answered slowly, a brow slightly quirked and lips set into a tight line. She shifted on her legs, standing up straighter. "Go ahead. Explain."
"Huh" If possible, his eyes widened even more.
"I said, go ahead and explain" She repeated herself, her voice monotonous and her expression indifferent. "That's what you wanted to do, right?" The brow that was quirked rose a bit more, her head tilting to the side slightly. "You wanted to explain yourself. So, go ahead and explain"
He found himself reaching his hand out to massage his temple slightly, clenching his free hand and then unclenching it-something he does when he doesn't know what to and an action she is well accustomed to, knowing him for that long. He parted his lips to speak, then closed it. He repeated the same action twice, before a scoff came from her.
She looked away from him, blowing out a low breath before staring at him again. "What? You can't justify yourself, can you?" She spat, her words bitter and eyes narrowed at him. "I thought you said you'll explain yourself? Or were you hoping I wouldn't give you the chance to do that so you'll pin the blame on me"
He was quick to shake his head. "No. Wallahi Jay it's not like that. I wanted to tell you but I was scared saboda nasan ki idan ranki ya baci"
She hummed, one that displayed her sarcasm without having to speak as she resisted the urge to scoff again.
He then paused, darting his tongue out to wet his suddenly chapped lips. He felt as though a bucket of cold water has been dumped on him, drenching him from head to toe. "Jay..." He made a move to get closer to her, only to stop when she threw a spine chilling glare at him. "Jay wallahi hadin gida akamana. I don't even like her"
"Pathetic" She mumbled under her breath, distaste masking her tone. She knew he heard her well, and if he didn't, she intends to say it out loud so he would. "You know what, Sadiq?" She paused, if possible, her eyes narrowing even more. "I want to slap you till the imprint of my hand remains on that face of yours" She said through gritted teeth.
He took a step away from her almost instantly. He knew her well enough to know that's not an empty threat.
She wouldn't care that he is a man, or that he is older than her, she would raise her hand high and land slaps on his face till it turns red and leaved imprint of her hand. And he can't do much because he knew there are people who will come after him if he hurts her. She has that immunity.
"But I won't do that" She stated, and almost instantly, his shoulders slumped in relief. "You don't deserve my time, not even that little. Stay away from me, unless you want me to slap you because by Allah I am itching to do more than that" Her expression was cold, and so were her words as she took a step away from him, and with a final glare, she turned around and left him.
And not once did he try to reach out to her-not because he didn't want to, but because that wouldn't work and because she really will slap, and disgrace him in public if he dares to do that.
Jannah made her way back to CS department, making a quick beeline to their powder room. She checked the stalls to make sure they are empty, before she made her way towards the faucet and turned it on. Getting a handful of water, she splashed it on her face repeatedly.
"You handled it better than I did"
She paused, raising her water stained face to stare at the woman she had no idea had stepped into the place. Turning around, she turned off the faucet then reached her hand out to get a roll of tissue to wipe her face with before dumping it away. While doing that, the woman had made her way to stand by the faucet only a couple of feet away from her. "You okay?" She asked, her tone holding no malice whatever.
Jannah released a long breath, blinking a couple of times before meeting the woman's eyes through the mirror. "What do you think?" She asked, her tone clipped.
"Well, I think he deserves a couple of slaps" She shrugged slightly, "You let him off the hook easily"
Jannah found herself chuckling slightly, even though she has no will in her to do so. She turned around fully to face the woman who had done the same offering her a warm smile. "You knew, didn't you?"
"That he is seeing someone outside or that you work here?"
"Both"
The woman nodded, "Yes, that's why I kept insisting to get my checkup here all the time, and he couldn't do a thing about it but to tag alone. He looks like he's on needles every time he's here, I guess he was afraid of getting caught"
Jannah scoffed, the thought of going back to slap him at least once crossing her mind but she was quick to push it away. "If he's afraid ai karamin dan iska ne" She tipped her head slightly, "No offence"
"None taken" Sadiq's wife waved it off, her hand coming to rest on her bump. "Two years of marriage, and at this point, I've given up on stressing myself over him"
"I'm sorry" Jannah said earnestly, because she truly feels bad for the woman. She is angrier at him because of his wife than she is for herself because they aren't married. Once she breaks with him that's all. His wife though is stuck with him, especially now that they have a kid on the way.
That could be her.
If she did marry him and was in the woman's position, she didn't know how she would react.
The woman's smile only widened. "Don't say that, you're a victim too" Despite her trying to hide it, Jannah could see that she is still in pain, "As for me, I know a way to get him back in shape"
"Really?" Jannah rose a brow, not believing her. It's nothing personal. She doesn't believe there's anything that would change a man.
The woman chuckled, understanding the look given to her by the doctor. "Really" She pressed, "His father is someone he is scared of and will never cross"
Jannah nodded slightly-that fact she knows considering he has told her about it. Sadiq would do anything his father says without a second thought because he knows the consequence of doing otherwise. His mother has passed away about three years ago, so his father is all he has.
Despite being an only child, he still knows his father doesn't hesitate to draw a line whenever he does something wrong. After all, tsohon soja ne as Jannah likes to say since it's true.
"His father is the reason why we got married" The woman explained, "All I need to do is complain-and trust me, I will-then he will whip him in shape"
Jannah nodded, even though she still doesn't believe it will make him change but the thought of him suffering brought joy to her. "I would love to see that" She stated honestly, earning a soft laughter from his wife. Now staring at her, Jannah could tell the woman is truly beautiful. She couldn't tell which tribe she belongs to, but from the stunning features perhaps, Shuwa Arab?
He got himself a beautiful wife-the dream of most men who by the looks of it has a good character. Then if not for some men truly are stupid, why will he still go out chasing other women?
"You know, you're not the only woman" The woman said, snapping Jannah out of her trance.
"Huh?"
"The doctor" She stated, "That friend of yours, she's also a girlfriend of his"
Jannah couldn't help her scoff this time around. She thought Nabila is only a snake for not telling her of what he is up to, since she knows him, but who would've thought it goes beyond that? It must've been why she left their office earlier, perhaps she got a message from him. "Pathetic children of beautiful women" She spat, holding herself from saying a string of colorful words.
Sadiq's wife's chuckle reached her ears, as the woman's lips stretched showing her beautiful set of pearly teeth. "I like you" She stated honestly. She reached her hand out, "I'm Nahla"
Jannah eyes flickered to the hand, as she reached hands out to hold it for a handshake. "Firdaus, even though I'm sure you know that"
Nahla's smile widened. "Of course, but I'm glad I finally met you and cleared things up"
"Me too"
"I'll see you around then" Nahla said, pulling her hand away to subconsciously rub her bump.
Jannah's smiled widened, as she tucked her hand in her pocket. "I'll see you around"
Nahla turned around and waddled her way to the door. However, as she held the door handled, she stopped then turned around to stare at the doctor. "I thought you'd be crying your eyeballs over him" Her lips stretched into a smirk, "I see you're a strong woman"
Jannah scoffed slightly, "Men like him don't deserve my tears"
Nahla nodded in agreement, turning around to open the door and step out feeling as a weight has been lifted off her shoulders because the conversation went better than she thought. She is glad she cleared things up with Jannah and didn't end up fighting each other like some women do over men.
That's just pathetic.
One thing she and Jannah has in common amongst other things is that she would much rather fight over Pepsi than a man.
God forbid bad thing.
