"I WAS JUST looking for you"
Aisha stopped in her tracks, handing the patient's folder she was just looking through to the nurse standing behind the counter before turning to the source of the voice. A crease instantly formed in between her brows, as her lips curled downwards into a deep frown. "Hey..." She called out softly, reaching her hand to touch her best friend's shoulder. "...are you okay?"
Jannah sighed, her shoulders slumping as she shook her head—her facial expression downturned. "No" She answered earnestly, her arms hanging by her side, slacked.
If possible, Aisha's frown deepened. She could tell, even if the woman had decided to deny it because it's obvious. Jannah has always been the happy one between them. She is bubbly on most cases, but certain times she is anything but. Jannah on the other hand can pretend like everything is fine all the time even when it's not. So, for her to downright admit that something truly is wrong. "What's wrong?" Aisha asked, giving the woman's shoulder a small squeeze.
Jannah released another long sigh, "Your shift is over, right?" She asked instead.
Aisha nodded, "Yes, but--" She left just as Aslam's surgery ended because she had to see an outpatient. She hadn't had the chance to speak to him considering she left before he left the OR. She wanted to go back and talk to him about the surgery's success because she has a feeling he would look for her. Truth be told, she really did have faith in his skills, and she was glad that it turned out well.
"Great, let's go somewhere" Jannah held her hand and dragged her out of the hospital, making a quick move of taking off her white coat.
Aisha's eyes widened slightly, as she took off her white coat too. She wanted to inform Jannah that she just needs to speak to Aslam for a moment, but it's obvious Jannah is taking no as an answer by the way she took her hand almost immediately both coats are off. "Wait, I didn't bring my car" It was only in the morning earlier did she realize that she had a flat tire. So, she left the car at home and had the driver bring her instead. She is supposed to call him when she gets off work.
"Neither did I" Jannah said, linking her arm with Aisha's as they made their way out of the hospital. After crossing the entrance doors, she spoke again. "That's why I called someone" She extended her free hand, gesturing to the car parked opposite them.
Aisha's eyes drifted from her friend to the car she is pointing towards. Her head tilted to the side slightly, already recognizing whose car it is before the driver's window slid down, revealing the man behind the wheels. Her lips slowly curled upwards into a small smile, her feet moving forward as Jannah dragged her to the car.
"Hello ladies" He greeted, flashing them a wide grin that only seemed to make his features pop out even more.
Aisha stared at him with a raised brow, before moving her gaze to Jannah who had already pulled open the back door and got in. She gave Aisha no chance to think twice before pulling her in, making sure to close the door in the process. She then took Aisha's white coat, along with hers, before dumping it on the passenger seat.
His head tilted to the side due to the action, making him turn around to the look at the two women, eyes narrowed. "What? Driver kuka maida ni?" He asked, his glare moving from Aisha to Jannah who offered him a small shrug.
"You're our designated driver today. Take it or leave it" She waved it off. On normal circumstances, she would've offered him a fake grin to accompany her words, but she really doesn't feel like feigning anything at the moment.
His brow quirked up slightly due to the odd action from the woman. Although he isn't that close to the woman, he had picked up on how she acts and her earlier action was just weird, even for her. He glanced at Aisha, giving her a look that questioned her best friend's action.
Aisha's eyes met his, understanding his silent question before she threw a quick glance at Jannah who had rested her head on Aisha's shoulder, eyes staring out the window despite knowing the sudden silence that engulfed them is due to her action. Aisha then sighed, turning to him as she shook her head silently letting him know it's not the time to tease the girl or anything similar.
He nodded in understanding, choosing to be a designated driver. "Alright ladies, where do you want me to take you? Your house, or Jannah's?" He asked, offering them a small smile that he hoped will ease a little bit of whatever the latter's issue is.
Aisha turned to Jannah, "Jay..." She called out softly, a silent gesture to show she should pick wherever she wants to go to. She was the one that called him, and asked her out.
Jannah never minded when someone called her with that nickname. Now though it simply reminded her of the man that had successfully ruined her day, and quite possibly the next few days as well. Nonetheless, she didn't say a thing about it yet. "I wanna go to your restaurant" She answered, raising her head from her best friend's shoulder to look at him.
He offered her a small smile, before nodded. "Okay, I'll take you there" He turned around, just in time Jannah rested her head back on Aisha's shoulder and the latter wrapped an arm around her shoulder. She continued looking out the door, as they drove in silence from the hospital to the restaurant that was about a twenty minutes' drive away.
Throughout the drive, no words were exchanged from the three. Normally, it wasn't like that for them, but seeing as one of them appreciated the silence, they allowed her to have it.
Soon enough, he had pulled up in the driveway of his restaurant. He stepped out of the car first, opening the back door for them with a small nod. Aisha chuckled at the action while Jannah shook her head, saying something along the lines of "Such a gentleman. He's going all out on the designated driver package"
"Well, of course" He answered, his smile never wavering as the three made their way into the simple, yet posh restaurant that looked like it would contain thirty people at most at the same time.
Inside the restaurant was sleeker, considering everything was neat and in place. There weren't many people in there, probably around ten or something like that. Waiters and waitresses made their ways round, serving the customers.
A couple of them that noticed the owner arriving with two women they've come to know well offered them smiles that were returned. He then led them to the corner to an empty table, one that is their usual table whenever they come around. They all appreciated it considering it's by the window, and that means it gave a beautiful view of the city from there.
The women were first to take their respective chairs, while he stood over his, fingers tapping the top lightly. "You guys have prayed, right?" He asked, considering it's only a little past Magrib.
The two nodded. They usually make sure to pray before leaving the hospital even if their shift is over as long the time is right.
"Okay then..." He nodded lightly. "What do you want then? The usual?" He could've asked one of the workers to get them all whatever it is they want, however, since he is there, he wanted to do it for them. Besides, he doesn't like staying idle whenever he's there, despite being the owner. That's not the kind of impression he wants to leave on his workers.
"Yup" Aisha agreed, already salivating at the thought of her food arriving. The last time she ate anything wa sin the morning before she left home. Since then, she only had water which is why she was looking forward to the dinner.
And besides, there's no denying the food in his restaurant is top notch. That's why it's a popular hangout on most days, because the food there is one that will leave you wanting more.
"Jay?" He asked, moving his gaze to the woman that's slouched in her chair.
She nodded, lips pouted slightly. "Yes, please"
"I'll be right back" With a quick bob of his head, he turned around and walked to where the kitchen is, before disappearing behind the closed doors leaving the two alone.
Once out of sight, Aisha turned around to stare at Jannah with a brow quirked. "Since when have you and Abdallah been friends?" She asked, with a slight tease in her tone to lighten up the mood.
Jannah flickered her gaze to her best friend, lips lazily curling upwards slightly. "Since I could get a designated driver and food from a high class restaurant for free" She answered earnestly. In all honestly, she and Abdallah aren't even that close. The only reason they get along on most cases is because he brings food for Aisha and her at the hospital every once in a while.
Anyone who brings her food is a loved one to her. Which is technically why she didn't hesitate to call him earlier and asked him to pick her and Aisha up. If she hadn't found Aisha, she would've went ahead with him alone knowing he wouldn't refuse. Besides, he's a nice man—he's good looking too. That she wouldn't deny.
So, in a way, they really are friends of some sort.
Aisha snorted lightly, rolling her eyes. "So you're using my cousin," She shook her head playfully. "Barin barki kiyi ma yayana haka ba"
It was Jannah's turn to chuckle lowly. "He does it on his own accord ai. And besides, he knows it's bound to happen. I mean he can't expect me to not want the food he makes all the time" She also wouldn't deny that he cooks one of the best food she has ever tasted, and that's saying something considering she's had her own fair share of food tasting as a gourmet.
"He really does make good food"
"He makes great food"
Aisha chuckled lightly, "And to think he's a doctor too" The thought had her shaking her head slightly. She has always known that Medicine has never been Abdallah's passion. But of course, his mother wanted her only son to be a doctor so he opted to become one, for her. Despite everything that points to his mother as a bad person, to him, she's just a mother who truly loves her son—and he loves her too, even though he doesn't agree with some of the decisions that she makes.
He doesn't practice medicine though like them. He does it occasionally, considering he visit hospitals a couple of days in a week where he has been hired as a consultant. He had gone through his residency in Pediatrics and all, so he is qualified for that.
On most days though, he is simply a chef in his restaurant that he had put up after getting his degree. It was a managing a restaurant and dealing with internships and all, but he made it work considering his mother was supportive in that too. He had fulfilled her dreams of him being a doctor, the most she could do was support him in this.
And it payed off, because he now had workers of his own, and his restaurant is considered one of the most elite hangouts.
"A good looking and religious guy" Jannah used her fingers to point it out, "A good personality, a doctor and a great chef, the complete package"
"No wonder the ladies have their eyes on him, right?" Aisha pointed, her eyes moving from Abdallah who had emerged from the kitchen with their plates along with another waiter holding the other plates since he can't do it alone, to a couple of tables away from them which had some ladies seated, taking discrete glances at him who is unaware of their looks.
Abdallah reached their table, placing Jannah's food in front of her before placing Aisha's. The waiter placed his down, while he took his seat. "Alright ladies, this is on the house so, dig in!"
"See!" Jannah exclaimed, picking up a fork as she stared at Aisha with the I-told-you-so look. "Free food! How can we not be friends?"
Aisha looked up, her eyes meeting Abdallah's, before the two burst into fits of laughter. Leave it to Jannah to consider whoever gives her food as a friend.
After that, no words were exchanged between the three as they silently dug into their food, and shortly after, they have all cleared their plates. Jannah placed her fork down with a small clank, her eyes staring at space. "Sadiq is married" She announced out of the blue, making the two heads snap to stare at her with wide eyes.
Even though she and Abdallah aren't that close, he still knows of her and the man. He had seen him once from a distance when he came to visit the two at the hospital, even though Sadiq didn't see him considering he seemed like he was in a hurry.
Now that Jannah is thinking about, he must've been there with Nahla that time too. It must've been why he kept giving excuses about how he was in a hurry. That was only about two months ago.
"Sadiq? Married?" Aisha repeated, as if finding it absurd that the man and the word could belong in the same sentence. "When did he get married?"
Abdallah didn't say a word, despite the fact that he still has wide eyes.
Jannah released a fed up sigh, gritting her teeth as she spat her next words. "Apparently, he has been married for two years" She the scoffed, her eyes moving to stare at the two, "Oh and did I mention that his wife is pregnant?" Her words came out bitter, and so was her expression.
Aisha's features softened, as she extended her hands out and pulled the girl into a hug that Jannah cave into. "I'm sorry sweetheart" She patted her back lightly. Anger coursed through her veins, but she knew her anger wouldn't do a thing to lessen her friend's pain. It was obvious that all the girl truly needed is someone to be there, and her theory was proved to be right because only a couple of seconds later, Jannah's body shook as she cried.
She had held it in for the hours that had passed, but deep down she knew she would break down in Aisha's arms.
"Men are scum" Jannah stated, sniffing loudly as her fists clenched by her side.
"That's right, they truly are" Aisha agreed, rubbing soothing circles on her back. "All men are trash" She threw a look at Abdallah who had regained his composure, mouthing 'I'm sorry' to him.
He shook his head, an indication that he isn't offended by what she said. How could he when even he is upset by what the man did to her?
"This is why you should stay wicked to men" Jannah mumbled after a while of her simply sobbing. She then rose her head up, turning around with her face now red and slightly bloated from crying for about ten minutes. Her head hurt, and she could tell she wants to shed more tears but she didn't want to cry more there.
Abdallah handed her a handkerchief of his, which she took muttering a thank you. Wiping her face with it, she snorted to get rid of the snots that had clogged her nose, before staring at him with a slight pout. "I'll wash it and return it" She didn't care if he, or the others would deem her as a disgusting person for what she did. She has never been the one to care about what others think of her.
He nodded, even though he wanted to tell her that she could keep it—but it's obvious it wasn't the time. "Don't worry about it" He dismissed softly.
Her eyes drifted to the kitchen doors again, sniffing once again as tears welled up in her eyes. "What about my desert?" She asked, "I want my chocolate pudding" Her voice broke at the end of her sentence, as the tears she had been trying to hold cascaded down her face.
"Your pudding will be here" Aisha said, placing an arm over the girl's shoulder and giving it a small squeeze.
"I want it to-go. I want to head back home" She left out the part that she wanted to return home, take a shower, play her sad songs playlist and have her pudding as she cries her heart out. That sounds like the perfect first day of dealing with breakup for her. As much as she loved spending time with them, she wanted nothing more than to go home and do just that.
Abdallah nodded, as he got off the seat. "I'll let them know to make the both of your deserts to go then, okay?" With a small warm smile flashed at the two, he made his way back to get their orders. The next time he returned, Jannah wasn't crying anymore, though it was clear by the look on her face that she is simply trying to hold the tears back. "Come, I'll have someone drive you both home" He couldn't leave the restaurant at the moment, so he opted to having one of his workers drive them both home.
He escorted them both to the car, giving them their packaged deserts—making sure to double Jannah's order because it's apparent that she needs it—before he gave his car keys to the man that will take them home. "Drive safely, okay" He told the man, earning a nod from him. He then turned to the girls, "I'll see you soon"
He watched as the car drove of before he made his way back into the restaurant and continued his work. About three hours later, nearing the time of their restaurant closing, a couple came into the restaurant. Everyone has left already, because it's made known that they close by nine thirty dot.
A worker was about to make his way to inform them that they are closing when Abdallah stopped him, recognizing who the man is. "I'll take this, don't worry" He dismissed the man, as he made his way to the customers, a wide smile etched on his way. "How can I help you?"
The man looked down at the woman with a smile, before looking back at Abdallah. "Your best table for two please"
Abdallah nodded, "Of course. Follow me" He led them to a random table for two, before he took their orders. This time around, he didn't miss how the woman was being awfully flirty with him, it was obvious she found him more attractive than her date. The thought made Abdallah smirk as much as he wanted to move forward and bash the man's head.
He also didn't miss how the woman is missing a bump. Clearly, she isn't his wife.
As Abdallah made his way to the kitchen, he dismissed the workers letting them know they can work on clearing the restaurant while he prepares food for the two. He made the woman's food with no problem whatsoever, and the same happened when making the man's food. The only difference is that when making the man's food, he made sure to add enough saline laxatives that will do the job for the man before taking it back to them with a smile still etched on his face.
He even made little effort to entertain the woman, knowing she had long lost interest on her date and the man is obviously infuriated. Nonetheless, as Abdallah disappeared again to leave them alone, he made sure to gobble his food down because he didn't want to waste the money he spent there.
"Lock all the lavatory" Abdallah said to one workers, as he stood from a distance staring at the couple clearing their plates.
The man stared at him warily, but walked off to do as he was told.
Abdallah leaned on a wall, patiently waiting for his plan to be set in motion and soon enough, he could tell from the way the man uncomfortably shifts in his chair that his plan is set in motion. Shortly after, the man made his way to the lavatory only to find it locked. With wide eyes, he tried to open to door again and that was when Abdallah decided to make his presence known to the man.
"Is there a problem?" He asked innocently, holding back his laughter.
Sadiq shifts on his feet uncomfortably, trying to open the door again before looking back at Abdallah. "Yes, what is wrong with the doors?"
"Oh, that?" Abdallah casted a glance in the direction, before smiling again. "They are locked"
Sadiq's brows shot up, "Well, open it! I am in desperate need of it right now please"
"No can do" Abdallah shook his head, his smile never wavering though it was fake.
That seemed to have only angered Sadiq, because only a while later, his voice came loud. "WHY THE HELL NOT?!" He screamed.
Abdallah winced, his ears a bit sensitive due to the sudden scream. His smile then fell, as he stared at the man with a deadpanned look. "Because I said so" He crossed his arms. "Now if I were you, I would make a quick beeline out of here because if you stain my floors, wallahi sai kayi mopping dinshi"
It was as if Abdallah's words snapped something in Sadiq, because his eyes widened slightly as he continued to shift on his feet. "You...you did this on purpose didn't you?"
Abdallah ignored him.
"—I'll sue you for this! I--" He paused midway, when a loud fart came, followed by another that had his bringing his hands behind, as if that will stop the fart from coming yet again.
"Go ahead" Abdallah stated dismissively, as he rose his hands up to close his nose. "Now please leave my restaurant, ka ishe ni da wari"
Sadiq couldn't argue, because more farts came reminding him of his impending doom. Unable to argue again, he hastily left ignoring the date, his farts following after him like a siren that everyone close could hear.
His date, upset by the sudden turn of events picked her bag up and stormed out, looking for a ride back to wherever she came from.
Once they were both out, Abdallah had the workers clear everything up and made sure to spray room refresher considering the air reeked. He made sure the amount of laxatives he put for Sadiq wouldn't do any harm to him, aside from the impending diarrhea but that's something he's alright with.
The man deserves that much after what he did to Jannah. It was his shamelessness that got to Abdallah, because if not that Sadiq is shameless, after Jannah caught him earlier, and despite having a pregnant woman, he still has the audacity to take another woman out to dinner.
Abdallah wanted to much more, but he would have to settle for that at the moment. All he could hope for was that when Sadiq returns home, his wife will give him hell.
And his prayers were answered, because when Sadiq returned home, Nahla had locked the doors refusing to let him in. In fact, the woman was in her room, laughing at the marathon of Friends series she is watching while she munched on her pizza completely ignorant of the husband that is currently living through hell outside as he screamed at the top of his longs.
Long story short, that night, he suffered.
In simple words, wahala after wahala.
