chapter 1

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over the sleepy town of Willowbrook. It was the kind of place that seemed to exist in a time capsule, untouched by the rush of the outside world. The streets were narrow and cobblestone, lined with small shops that sold everything from fresh-baked bread to hand-stitched blankets. The air smelled of roses, fresh earth, and the faint scent of rain that lingered in the cool breeze.

Isabella loved this place. She had always found comfort in its peaceful rhythms. Here, she could forget about the weight of the world, or at least she could pretend. She could live in her little bubble of safety, where kindness was the rule and people smiled at one another, even if it was just for a moment
"Isabella walked through the main street with her best friend, Lily, by her side. Their footsteps echoed softly on the cobblestones as they passed by quaint little storefronts and the familiar faces of townspeople who always greeted them with a wave. Isabella couldn’t help but smile at the familiarity of it all. It was a quiet kind of happiness, the kind that made her heart feel full and light.

Lily, on the other hand, had a different energy. Where Isabella moved with a sort of gentle grace, Lily seemed to burst with excitement, always a little too loud, a little too eager, as if she were always waiting for something more to happen. And it was this contrast that made them such a perfect pair. Isabella was the calm to Lily’s storm, and Lily was the spark that kept Isabella from retreating too far into herself.

“Do you ever get tired of this place?” Lily asked, glancing sideways at her friend with a raised eyebrow. “I mean, all we ever do is walk around and talk about the same old things.”

Isabella laughed softly, tucking a stray lock of red hair behind her ear. “No, I like it here. It’s peaceful. Sometimes, I think we need a little peace, don’t you?”

Lily gave her an exaggerated look of disbelief. “Peace? In a town where the most exciting thing that happens is Mrs. Turner’s cat getting stuck in a tree? I don’t think so.” She paused, glancing around as if looking for something to break the monotony. “You need to get out more, Izzy. There’s a whole big world outthere beyond this place. You don’t know what you’re missing.”

Isabella smiled, knowing that Lily’s words, though full of playful exaggeration, came from a place of love. Lily was a force of nature, always chasing the next adventure, while Isabella had always been more content to stay within the boundaries of what she knew. And maybe, just maybe, Lily was right. Maybe there was more out there for her, more than the small-town life she had grown accustomed to.

But Isabella wasn’t in a hurry to find out. She liked the quiet, the safety of her life, the predictability of it all. It gave her room to breathe, to think, and to dream. And dreaming was something Isabella did well.

“Is there something wrong with being happyhere?” Isabella asked, looking at Lily with a playful glint in her eyes. “Some of us don’t need excitement to feel alive.”

Lily grinned, nudging her shoulder. “You’re right. You’re just... too nice, Izzy. You always see the good in people. It’s cute, but it’s also a little dangerous. Trust me, not everyone is as good as you think they are.”

Isabella’s smile faded slightly at her friend’s words. She didn’t fully understand what Lily meant, but she could sense the underlying seriousness in her tone. It wasn’t the first time Lily had mentioned the dangers of seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. There had been hints of it before—little warnings about being careful, about not trusting too easily. But Isabella had always brushed them off. She believed in the goodness of people. She had to. It was who she was.As they continued down the street, they passed a small florist’s shop, the windows filled with vibrant displays of fresh flowers. Isabella paused, her gaze falling on a bouquet of white roses. There was something about their simplicity, their purity, that always captured her attention. She could lose herself in the delicate folds of their petals, the soft, sweet fragrance that filled the air around them.

“You always stop here,” Lily said, following Isabella’s gaze. “Are you trying to send a secret message to someone? Or are you just a sucker for pretty flowers?”

Isabella smiled, a soft blush creeping up her cheeks. “I just like them. They remind me of... hope. A little piece of beauty in a world that’s sometimes hard to understand.”

Lily laughed, slinging her arm around Isabella’s shoulders. “You’re such a dreamer. Oneof these days, someone’s going to take advantage of that.”

Isabella chuckled, but the words left a small ache in her chest. Lily meant well, but she couldn’t help but feel a bit defensive. She couldn’t help it. She had always believed in kindness, in the goodness that could be found in everyone. She had to. If she didn’t, what would the world be?

The two continued on, their conversation light but laced with the undertones of something more. Isabella didn’t realize it at the time, but she was at a crossroads. Something was coming—something that would force her to question everything she believed about herself, about the world, and about the people she thought she knew.As they rounded a corner, the sound of a sleek black car caught Isabella’s attention. It wasn’t the sort of car that belonged in Willowbrook—too polished, too expensive. It pulled up to the curb with a soft, almost imperceptible hum. The engine cut out, and for a moment, everything seemed to still. Isabella’s breath caught in her throat as she watched the car, her curiosity piqued.

Lily, oblivious to Isabella’s sudden unease, kept walking, but Isabella’s feet remained rooted to the ground. A tall man stepped out of the car. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, his broad shoulders filling the doorway as he emerged. His features were sharp, almost too perfect, and he wore dark sunglasses that hid his eyes, though something about the way he carried himself suggested that he didn’t need to see the world clearly to control itThere was a quiet power about him, something magnetic, like the calm before a storm. Isabella felt it in her bones—something about him was not right. But before she could make sense of the feeling, the man disappeared into the building across the street, his presence lingering like a shadow.

Lily glanced back over her shoulder, her eyes narrowing as she caught sight of the man. “Weird,” she muttered, but didn’t say more as she tugged Isabella along, oblivious to the effect the man had already had on her.

Isabella didn’t know why, but the encounter stayed with her long after they had moved on. It wasn’t just the man’s unsettling presence that lingered. It was the feeling that, somehow, their paths had crossed for a reason. She couldn’t explain it. But deep down, she knew that this strange, dark figure was something—someone—she would not easily forget.

Meanwhile, not far from where Isabella and Lily stood, another story was unfolding. It was quieter, more subtle, but no less significant. Taehyung leaned against the doorway of a small café, his fingers tracing the edge of his coffee cup as he watched Lily and Isabella pass by. His gaze lingered on Lily for a moment longer than was necessary, though he quickly averted his eyes when he caught himself. She was unaware of the way he looked at her, always too caught up in her ownworld, always too energetic to notice the quiet man who observed from the shadows.

He found her fascinating, in a way. Her free spirit, her unwillingness to conform—it made him want to learn more about her, to understand why she acted the way she did. He wasn’t the type to pursue relationships easily, but there was something about Lily that drew him in, even when he tried to resist it.

For now, he would remain an observer. He wasn’t sure he was ready for the kind of chaos that Lily brought with her.

But he couldn’t deny the pull. There was something there. And it was growing, slowly, almost imperceptibly.
