What Makes You Happy?
One thing I find that non-Muslims find 'problematic' about Islam is the lifestyle/dress/process of marriage for women. This is an issue which is probably one of my favourites since I see Islam as setting the best lifestyle for women of different interests and personalities. So the following poem is of a non-Muslim asking questions to a Muslim woman.
---
How can you be happy, covering yourself head to toe?
Because happiness is inside your heart, where love grows.
And how does that help with how you must dress?
Clothes don't bring me the joy real love does, I guess.
What sort of love if you have to marry a practical stranger?
A marital contract with a man you like to protect you from danger?
Isn't it scary if you don't even know who he is?
My family and I would get to know him, and it shall be bliss.
I admire your optimism but to him, you'd be like a slave!
The Sunnah is that a husband has to help and behave.
What about now while you're unmarried, what can you find joy in?
My family, my studies, my friends and avoiding any sin.
What sort of life is that, so boring and dull?
A life filled with true happiness which makes my heart feel full.
And all those weird stares and looks?
Who cares when I have my head buried in books.
I still don't understand if you have beauty, why wouldn't you flaunt it?
I'm not superficial, I believe there's more to me like my wit.
But no one will look at you for something of that kind.
I only impress those who I love and care for, you'll find.
What about the rest of the world will think?
Why would I care for those, to whom I have no link?
I er...think I should go, it's getting quite late.
Okay, if you say so and it was nice to speak to you, mate.
