He Saved Me
*WARNING* This poem tackles a very sensitive topic.
Recently, I've been looking into mental health issues especially within in Muslim communities. It's still considered a taboo subject and I see there are times when young Muslims who are abused in any way feel trapped. Unable to find a way out, some find comfort in substance abuse or self-harm. This is NOT my story, but I've come across a few sisters who went through this and found their freedom and comfort in Islam knowing Allah will be there for them even if society isn't. It's time we help people going through things like this instead of being the 'they' (society) in this poem. Be the help Allah is sending that suffering person. For whoever is going through this, know that you're not alone. Allah is with you.
-
He abused me.
She accused me,
He tricked me.
She kicked me,
He whacked me,
She smacked me,
He decked me,
She wrecked me.
It soothed me,
It bruised me,
It expressed me,
It messed me,
It empowered me,
It devoured me,
It battered me,
It shattered me.
They blocked me,
They mocked me,
They despised me,
The ostracised me,
They detested me,
They distressed me.
They crushed me,
They hushed me.
But Allah saved me,
He amazed me,
He aided me,
He shaded me,
He corrected me,
He protected me,
He guided me,
He inspired me.
He gave me respect,
When I began to reflect.
He gave me freedom,
After I had felt beaten.
He gave me ease,
Curing me from my disease.
He gave me a chance for redemption,
And showed me affection.
My Lord, al-Rahman,
Who blessed us with the Qur'an,
And saved my Imaan.
